Fun, cute, and surprisingly devastating, Magikarp Jump! has provided a new way for Pokémon fans everywhere to gain a newfound appreciation for the infamous fish. Developer Select Button is the group responsible for the creation of Magikarp Jump, but before they created this epic tale of man of pokémon, the team had developed another game titled: Survive Mola Mola. The Mola Mola (also known as ocean sunfish) is the infamous fish who recently gained notoriety thanks to a rant regarding their overall uselessness in the animal kingdom. Select Button clearly understood the concerns of the individual who posted that rant as years before it even happened, they made a game in which the objective is to have your sunfish die! However, Survive Mola Mola is every bit as hilarious as the concept is morbid.  In Survive Mola Mola your job as an invisible entity is to raise the biggest baddest awe inspiring sunfish of them all. Yet, the first the player attempts anything new, their sunfish will die! But, fret not as the following sunfish generation develops immunity and gains bonuses from each death. Players everywhere will cease caring about the lives of their sunfish and simply move on to the next generation, in order to raise the majestic king of the pacific their sunfish is destined to become (after a few generations). Yet, how easy is it to kill a sunfish? After all, sunfish can grow up to ridiculous sizes, and anything that big has to have at least a bit of durability, right? The answer is no, not at all! The sunfish in Survive Mola Mola can die from a multitude of unexpected manners. Here is a list of the methods thus far: 1. Natural causes- as they can die of old age. 2. Never being born- the fish got stuck as an egg. 3. Crashing into the fish tank...- if your turn down the brightness of the phone the sunfish will eventually crash and die into the side. 4. Death by bubbles- shaking your phone creates bubbles, the bubbles will eventually kill them 5. Thousand cuts- Tapping your fish a certain amount of times will eventually kill them 6. Sudden Changes in Light- Taking a screenshot or suddenly changing the brightness in the game will kill the thing. 7. Die on an adventure- The game features adventures... they can kill your fish. 8. Eating food- Yes, even eating kills your fish even though eating makes it grow. Similar to Magikarp Jump as your fish continues to expire the bonuses increase and you'll have an easier time growing your sunfish. You'll want to accumulate as quickly as possible as Survive Mola Mola can become tedious at times; you can also purchase bonuses with mana. When the game has been finished once (by reaching the 5,000kg cap) the player will unlock hard mode. Playing on hard mode resets various death flags and allows even further amounts of bonuses to be accumulated. In short, hard mode is simply a better way to play Survive Mola Mola. | body | V for Vendetta, The Matrix, The Hunger Games, Star Wars, and a sleuth of other films deal with the topic of an oppressed society dealing with a tyrannical government and ultimately succeeding in toppling it over. Of course, it's obvious that audiences will tend to side with the underdog as they struggle to gain significant victories over their cruel oppressors. But, despite the fact that movie watchers react positively to these films, it's clear that the average moviegoer doesn't support actual acts of rebellion. Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States recently underwent a state of unrest during which the majority of civilians criticized, and ostracized the rebelling masses. Eventually the movement quelled and the protesters died out, but not without being an accurate representation of how passive our society has become. Yet, if audiences react positively to films of rebellion, how come the same isn't true about actual acts of revolt?  Movies with the topic of rebellion are often a good analysis of the human condition. As President Snow said in the Hunger Games "Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective; a lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained". The government in Puerto Rico applied this by ensuring that police officers were paid and welfare continued during the times of strife, which ensure minimum support for the freedom fighters in the island. By providing a small amount of hope that the situations wouldn't deteriorate past a certain point, the "rulers" of the country effectively toppled the rebellion before it became a significant threat to the status quo. The cabinet put into effect laws that would further deter acts of rebellion by making it illegal to conceal faces during acts of protest, effectively destroying privacy rights. In other countries, these acts would be acts of war against their own populace, but the people in Puerto Rico simply saw the government as keeping order. However, Puerto Ricans received no support from their fellow American during their hardships and in fact were instead criticized for acting "childish" after getting themselves into debt. But, in a country founded by rebels and freedom fighters, where has our fighting spirit gone? The answer to that question is... the movie realm and even videogames. Rebellion films allow fans to indulge in their anarchist nature without actually endangering themselves. Viewers understand that death in the real world is permanent, but in a movie they don't worry about loss of life or property, and instead focus on the plot at hand. The fine line between the "good guys" and the "bad guys" being clearly defined allows people to simply cheer for those they know are working towards the benefits of the masses. In real life, however this line is not so clear and people fear losing the things they've worked for in the midst of uncertainty. Similar to how sharing a post on Facebook allows people to feel they've done their parts, by supporting a film about rebellion people feel receive a false sense of satisfaction in their lives. But, it ultimately does nothing when policemen are massacring the very lives they're supposed to protect, and the government takes advantage of the people surrounding them. The natural train of thought is along the lines of "as long as it doesn't affect me, I'll be all right", but how long until that comes back to bite a person in the ass? A government should not be feared by its people, the government should fear its people, and this is true for any and all ruling caste. The leadership of this country has been for the last few decades handing more power to corporations, and continue taking away rights from those they're supposed to protect every day. If the trend continues, it's only a matter of time until people have to rise to arms once more. But, when the inevitable happens and people are once again called upon to rise against the machine will they be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice that some of the heroes in these films did in order to achieve their goals? Ultimately the choices made by these fictional characters hold little weight as they merely serve as inspirational figures. Yet, if the masses are unwilling to use these inspiration figures to actually drive themselves forward and put a stop to the continuous decline of society then nothing will change. Our government is corrupt and that much is known, but we can't continue to allow fictional characters to do the fighting for us. The time for action is now and we must take every means available to ensure that every peaceful option is exhausted, but if that doesn't work... on what side will you stand when the bell tolls for thee? |

| body | Recently the USS Ronald Reagan stopped by Australia for some much needed R&R. For many it was their first opportunity to explore the sights in the land down under, and visit both the city of Brisbane and Gold Coast. However, while visiting Surfer's Paradise in Gold Coast I happened upon an interesting store called Grandpa's Antique Photos, which as the name implies, allows customers to take "antique" themed photographs such as gangsters and western cowboys. My group of course, chose gangs of Chicago as their theme.  As a modeling enthusiast, and part-time cosplayer I was definitely in my zone when visiting Grandpa's. I was excited to see the quantity of costumes available, but while the selection is large, the photographer selected our suits for us and instead allowed us to choose either suits or suspenders for our particular shoot. Once we were suited up (which took about 15 minutes), we acquired some props such as revolvers and even a few Chicago Typewriters along with fake money and alcoholic beverages to add some realism to the scenes. From that point on, the photographer began the shoot.  We took about 50 to 60 different photos with variable angles and poses that captured our best sides, and overall shot for approximately an hour before being able to choose which photos to buy. During the selection progress we were informed of a special deal which included 3 pictures on groups of three for 75 Australian dollars (Around 57 American) and shown our options. All of us selected 2 pictures and an added extra silly one which we split the costs for evenly to a sum total 58 AUD (44 American). The results were more than satisfactory and the costs were nothing overly exorbitant, which lead to an overall great experience with the store. But, as with everything good there are some aspects we didn't enjoy.  For one, not being allowed to choose our own costumes, was not a terrible thing per-say as the photographer did choose some good ones, but it would have been better if we had those choices ourselves. The second aspect was that our photographer wasn't the same one as the cashier, which was an older black-haired short lady that anyone who googles the locale will see is rather pushy and unpopular (almost every negative review involves her). While the photographer was nice and cool, the older lady was a little overbearing considering we were only doing this for fun. The pictures are 8 by 10, and can't be placed on USB drives (which means you'll have to scan or photograph the pictures yourself if you want copies such as the digital ones below) which means that you won't be able to get wallet sized copies. Finally the price, while as mentioned above not exorbitant could stand to be a little lower.  However, I will say the following: Grandpa's might not have the best reviews in Google, but that is not because they're a bad business. Two of the four workers we interacted with were great gals (the other two were the black-haired lady, and a blonde woman who didn't interact with us as she arrived when we picked up our pictures) also we had a lot of fun during the shoot. The business is in an easy to access location located at the strip of stores in Gold Coast, a little ways past the newly established Steampunks at Surfers Paradise. | body | Recently I acquired a game called Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom through Steam which looked interesting. At first glance, Shiness had an interesting appeal as it featured a cast of anthropomorphic animals and humans, bright and colorful cel-shaded graphics, and a positive standing among the user base in Steam. But, was it worth the purchase? After trying it out for an hour... I have to say not really; Shiness is definitely not for everyone and while critical reception places it in a slightly above average score category, I don't quite feel the same.  ***Disclaimer*** Small spoilers ahead, and also a reminder that I only played for two hours as it became unbearable for me to continue. Shiness was funded by Kickstarter and developed by the independent company Enigami. Beating their goal of 100,000 USD by an additional 39,865 dollars, the developers crafted a fully fledged game of 15-50 hours worth of gameplay. Truly a lot of effort went into creating the world of Shiness and in many aspects of the game it shows. The voice acting is good, the character designs are interesting, and the world of Shiness appears to have some solid lore behind it. Yet, the game is flawed in many ways and none of those are due to faulty programming, but rather the design choices made by the developers perhaps weren't the best alternatives. The player begins the game as Chado (which sounds like shadow), an explorer/adventurer who can communicate with spirits that only he can see/hear. After crash landing from his airship and his friend Poky jumping ship; Chado sets out to rescue him from the midst of the jungle. While exploring his new surroundings you learn the controls, solves puzzles, and fight battles. The controls in Shiness are pretty basic and shouldn't be too difficult to master, but combat can be a completely different story. Combat in Shiness is essentially a mixture of fighting games and RPG's. When a player enters combat they can do a multitude of attacks including: combos, magic, dodges, counters, and blocks. All battles are one versus one with characters in the sidelines waiting for a character/enemy to be downed before joining the brawl. Chado is a fighter-type and is one of the two characters I was able to use in my first two hours, his fighting style is fast and fun with lots of combinations available to the player right off the bat. But, when it came time to play as Poky it was a completely different story. Poky is a magic-user type character and right of the bat he's given a spell, you would think he'd stand in the background and provide support to the front-lines, but instead as battles are 1v1 he's actually supposed to fight monsters himself. Playing with him was an exercise in annoyance as I constantly kept dying at the hands of my enemies who could teleport to me as I tried to fire magic. The difficulty spike when controlling him (around the 45 minute mark) was too much, and it became a chore to play as Poky. Which only became worse when I found out how his puzzles worked. I personally did not enjoy the puzzles in the game, and while the first ones with Chado were a simple switch pressing mechanic, all of the characters (5 total) are eventually required to solve a few of the latter ones. This wouldn't be a problem in other RPG's as many of them feature simplistic puzzles, but Shiness has puzzles that feel more at home in a Banjo-Kazooie game than here. All of the characters have a different type of puzzle they can solve and when you unlock all of them, you best be ready for some heavy puzzle solving. Poky on the other hand has to solve node connecting puzzles, which involve linking nodes together to power up nearby devices. In essence Poky would pick up electricity from a crystal and link them from point A to B using mini-nodes that were on the path towards each other. But, it couldn't be done with any element as it each requires a specific one which is identified by their color. Needless to say this did not redeem the game or Poky in my eyes in the least. But, trust me when I say that Shiness needed that redemption. As a Kickstarter game, I'm willing to forgive some aspects and I did. I didn't mind it when my character clipped through certain elements such as water. In fact when I saw that happen, my initial reaction was to laugh, I also didn't mind the combat being spammy and requiring a heavy usage of items on some hard hitting enemies. Collecting wild critters for random drops (a collectors nightmare) was also a small aspect of the game that wasn't really attractive to me, but I didn't mind any of these as I truly wanted to enjoy Shiness. Yet, the mixture of elements didn't sit well with my taste in RPG's and perhaps the developers tried to mix-up the formula too much to make it enjoyable. It's not a terrible game by any means, but if I had to give it a score I'd say a 4/10 would be my opinion. While the consensus seems to be the game is a 68% on Metacritic, I have to disagree on the stance and say that it's not worth the purchase. Shiness had grand ideas, which could have use more polishing and I'm not the type of player that will continue playing if the game doesn't attract my attention within two hours. Even Monster Hunter with it's 30 minute to one hour single-player tutorial picks up speed and can be played right off the bat, with the right teams on multiplayer. However, Shiness is a strictly single-player game and doesn't offer much besides what's already there. I hate to say it, but people are better off not buying it. You could try renting it, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a die-hard furry wanting to play an RPG with anthropomorphic beings. |

| body | Majora's Mask is one of The Legend of Zelda's most unique titles. Created as a side-project by a small team of developers at Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was made in just a year. But, in-spite of it's small development cycle, it is held in high regard by the Zelda series fan communities. Of course, why wouldn't it be? Majora's Mask is definitely one of the darkest titles of the series, and clearly handles the themes of death, regret, sorrow, loss, and a variety of adult fears that only a few titles of the era could compare. But, just what is Majora's Mask gimmick, you might ask? As Link you're tasked with returning the devilish Majora's Mask which houses a dark and corrupting influence on those who wear it. But, you only have three days to do so, and this is obviously not enough time! Now, Link must once again use time travel, to solve the problems of the world by repeating the same three day cycle in this groundhog day nightmare that he has come upon! But, he's not alone; by utilizing the powers of fallen heroes whose spirits are housed within masks he can become them to face any potential challenges! Together they will save Termina or perish once more, while trying! -5.jpg) As mentioned above, the time traveling mechanics are a key practice of Majora's Mask. Every time Link travels back in time he loses all consumables that he was carrying, rupees, keys, bombs, arrows, and anything inside a bottle. Yet, Link is able to keep the items which use these along with any masks that he collects. Which begs the question? What exactly makes it impossible for Link to keep those items, while keeping everything else? The answer itself is never provided by the game and is probably the subject of much speculation. What exactly makes these items immune to whatever time traveling magic the Ocarina of Time is casting when Link plays the Song of Time? However, recently during a play-through of the game, a realization dawned upon me. Magical items are able to create ripples in the three day cycle which Link keeps repeating. The first notable observation of this comes with the Heart Piece in the Clock Tower, one which you obtain by following the story line normally in your first cycle. When Link plays the song of time the first time and returns to the inside of the Clock Tower only to be healed from his curse... the player can notice that the heart piece which was formerly there is now replaced with a small heart. The heart piece which was there did not leave Link, but another item took it's place as to avoid creating a temporal paradox which could destroy everything. Yet, the heart remains... strictly from a gameplay mechanic this is to avoid players from abusing this heart piece continually, but in-game explanations are never provided. Next thing players will notice is that if they remain in town for a while gathering masks and heart pieces they will have to eventually restart the cycle and... the masks will now also become a permanent part of Link's inventory and those people will no longer carry heart pieces.  Now masks are a crucial mechanic in Majora's Mask, while they were in Ocarina of Time a pointless side-quest in MM they allow Link not only to become other heroes, but also new abilities and powers. Any mask that Link has gather will remain in their inventory as he gathers each mask it will add an extra bit to the ending until he can finally gain all 24 masks in the game. This is the key to unlocking the full ending and also the major pillar upon which this theory stands. Every single one of those masks is responsible for the happiness of other individuals and if you finish the game with all of them the player is able to witness the impact they made on those virtual lives. It's almost as if the masks themselves are responsible for ripping the time continuum to ensure that once they're gathered that person gains the happiness they deserve. These masks don't return to their owners because by Link gathering each one he's literally breaking a piece from time itself and bringing it to his new one. By gathering items, Link is essentially altering reality! But, even more importantly Link is crafting the future into a brighter one that cements his image of a hero. Yet, some of the masks he gathers can't be worn, and only serve to be held as key items...  The boss's masks are items he gather after completing a dungeon and originally they allowed Link to face a boss once again if he enters their temple without having to repeat the stage (this no longer serves the same application as of the 3DS remake). By carrying the masks into their temples the boss of each dungeon is able to speak with Link directly and remember their defeat at his hands. This signifies that the bosses are not only openly acknowledging the ripple in the previous timeline, but actively seeking revenge for it. If it was true that Link's actions were not causing time rifts then they wouldn't react to this in the least, and yet, they do. They are simply so enraged that Link dares to oppose them, that they blindly allow him into their room without even trying to wear him down by letting him complete the dungeon again. This also means that Link is not the only being capable of acknowledging the time cycle repeat. Which is even more interesting when players take note that the scarecrow and The Happy Mask Salesman (HMS) are also aware of it (in varying degrees as the scarecrow is simply aware of a time manipulating song). HMS is even waiting for Link after the very first repeat waiting for him to return the Majora's Mask that was stolen. This alone puts doubt as to his status as a human, as he's able to cast magic which contains the spirits of the deceased utilizing music, and is exempt from the time travel effects of the Song of Time and what is he walking around with? He's wandering the world with a bag filled with masks. The same type of masks that are shown to be able to escape the effects of the Ocarina of Time! Which could mean that he has collected so many of them, that he's effectively a wandering time bubble! In the end, what do all of these questions mean for fans of The Legend of Zelda? Well, as the Hyrule Historia confirms, time is a fickle thing in the world of Zelda. A timelines converge and disconnect, and new threads are formed, only a few things can escape the effect of time and magical items are a few of those. By creating a ripple effect, the actions taken by Link can simultaneously happen and not-happen at the same time. These cracks continue creating and destroying timelines which eventually converged at the point in which Breath of the Wild happens and it's amazing. As the grandmother movie "Kimi No Na Wa" describes the word "musubi" which means everything and anything is connected, timelines converge and take shape, twist, tangle sometimes unraveling and connecting once more... "musubi", knotting that is time. It's a very Japanese concept and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Masks is a great example of it! It's also important to note that even if you don't do a single quest in your final cycle, you're still capable of seeing the full ending. Which is the twisting and tangling, breaking and finally converging in one last hurrah for when the mask of Majora is defeated. In the end Link departs from Termina and continues his journey as a hero. But, everything is set correct with the world of Termina and order has once again been restored. Even if the balance of time hung from a thread the entire time Link was there. As every ripple continued flowing until finally meeting again...  |
