But, as it did with Coinnest, if the South Korean authorities discover clear evidence in the movement of client funds to external accounts, it could result in the exchange either permanently or temporarily shutting down.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have secured hard disks and accounting books through confiscation. Analysis is expected to take days,” the authorities said, adding that the final report on the UPbit case will be released next week.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the exchange operator’s development team stated that the platform is still operational and will continue to service users until further notice is sent by the local police.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“UPbit is currently under investigation by the prosecution, and we are working diligently. UPbit services such as all transactions and withdrawals are operating normally. Your assets are kept securely in your account, so you can rest assured that you can use UPbit services.”</span></p>\n<h2><b>Coinnest Situation</b></h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, the president of Coinnest, formerly a major cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, was <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/korean-cryptocurrency-exchange-executives-detained-in-embezzlement-probe/\">arrested</a> for allegedly stealing user funds and allocating them to his own personal cryptocurrency accounts. According to Hani, Coinnest was once the third biggest cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, which also operated a major cryptocurrency mining operation.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local police and investigators discovered that the funds of clients were sent to the personal accounts of executives at Coinnest and immediately arrested its president.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinnest is still functioning, after its board announced that it has replaced the executive team of the company and will continue to operate as a local cryptocurrency trading platform.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the cryptocurrency market’s reaction to the investigation into UPbit could be considered as an exaggeration to an ongoing investigation and investors on the trading platform are still able to trade and withdraw their funds. WeChat has support for ‘Mini-Programs’ where developers can create applications to run within the messaging platform. The company just suspended Xiao Xieyi, the first blockchain mini-program on the platform.</p>\n<p>Xiao Xieyi, which was launched on Wednesday allowed users to create encrypt and create contracts on the Ethereum Blockchain without having to leave WeChat. We apologize, the content of the program has been suspended due to the fact that the content is not authorized on the platform.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>China took a hard stance against Cryptocurrencies this year, entirely banning their trade and ICOs. However, they are extremely optimistic about Blockchain. The government is hoping to have <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-government-to-establish-national-blockchain-standards-by-2019-report/\">Blockchain standards</a> in place by 2019 for products and services to make use of. Just last month, a $1.6 Billion fund was created to support local Blockchain startups with the help of the Government.</p>\n<p>However, the developer claims the App was not suspended because they use Blockchain, but because they encrypt the data. Wang Dengke, the founder of Niuco Box told Securities Daily, <em>“Mini-Programs are not allowed to have encryption features. In wake of the down market for cryptocurrency, Augur is the only top-100 coin or token to post a 10% gain over USD for the day.</p>\n<p>Augur’s trade volume has ballooned roughly 1900% since May 10 (in USD). The price has also increased about 26% since the close of day May 10, from $44.28 to $55.93 as of this writing. Augur’s trading volume and price immediately ratcheted up. Binance is the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, with the firm <a href=\"https://medium.com/binanceexchange/binance-monthly-highlights-month-8-4196bf56042\">reporting</a> 7.9 million total users on March 15.</p>\n<p>Binance is moving full steam ahead with listing ERC20 tokens like Augur. This comes at a time when its competitor Coinbase is slow to list them, despite a recent <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/coinbase-announces-it-will-add-erc20-support/\">announcement</a> to support them. The exchange offers trading for 312 cryptocurrencies, according to <a href=\"https://coinmarketcap.com/exchanges/binance/\">CoinMarketCap</a>, but has come under more <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/binance-receives-warning-from-japan-plans-to-move-hq-to-malta/\">regulatory pressure</a> recently. The exchange still enjoys a large influx of new user registrations.</p>\n<p>Still in beta phase, <a href=\"http://www.augur.net/about/\">Augur</a> is a “a decentralized oracle and prediction market platform.” The token is one of the first in the field of prediction markets and influenced other projects that followed.</p>\n<p>While Augur has received criticism in the past for <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/eth-and-augur-investor-hacked-ethereum-price-dives-further/\">security concerns</a> and <a href=\"http://augur.strikingly.com/blog/why-we-must-delay\">delays</a>, the project is gaining traction with new development.  <a href=\"https://medium.com/@AugurProject/augur-weekly-development-update-may-9th-d6cc565153f5\">A weekly development update on May 9th</a> touts new completed development features and clearer road map.</p>\n<p>“The team has been working on Augur App this past week, a small electron application that packages Augur Node and the Augur UI so you can use Augur locally with an Ethereum node of your choosing. It will take care of running Augur Node in the background and auto-deploy the Augur UI locally in your browser. This will allow for users to have a single-click solution for using Augur locally,” the update said.</p>\n<p>The update goes on to highlight a tentative road map for new development.</p>\n<p>“We have our deployment timeline (<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">tentatively</em>) set internally. We’re working out final tasks regarding the deployment process, REP migration, and some code complete features this week,” the update said.</p>\n<p>This solid development progress comes on the heels of continued good news for the project, such as <a href=\"https://medium.com/@AugurProject/augur-weekly-development-update-may-2nd-3b523e160680\">a grant</a> for the bounty program.</p>\n<p>Time will tell when the project will exit the beta phase, which it has stayed in for quite some time. But before that happens, he believes ethereum will take bitcoin’s crypto-crown.</p>\n<p>Ver, once known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” told <a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/ethereum-price-latest-updates-bitcoin-cash-roger-ver-crytocurrency-flippening-a8345166.html\">The Independent</a> that so-called technologically superior cryptocurrencies like ethereum and bitcoin cash will surpass bitcoin in value in the coming months and years. Ver sees ethereum surpassing bitcoin by year’s end and bitcoin cash by 2020.</p>\n<p>Analysts refer to this supposed development as “<a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/no-flippening-ethereum-price-recovers-correction/\">The Flippening</a>.”</p>\n<p>Ver pointed to slow transaction times and high fees undermining bitcoin. I’m sure that formula will continue to work for BCH into the future, and it will surpass BTC in usage, popularity, and market cap in the near future.”</p>\n<h2>Uncertainties Remain</h2>\n<p>Not all cryptocurrency experts agree with Ver.</p>\n<p>Michael Jackson, Skype’s former COO now working at Mangrove Capital Partners, said bitcoin can overcome its shortcomings and thereby offset other cryptocurrencies’ benefits.</p>\n<p>Jackson said solutions are being sought for bitcoin’s scalability issues. He further noted that bitcoin is by far the best-known cryptocurrency and the reserve cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>Ver acknowledged that bitcoin could remain the top cryptocurrency, but he doesn’t think it is likely. The hearing focused on leveraging blockchain technology to improve supply chain management and to combat counterfeit goods such as medicines and children’s products.</p>\n<p>Ralph Abraham, chairman of the oversight subcommittee highlighted in his opening sentiments that “leveraging blockchain technology” could help “improve supply chain management and combat counterfeit” goods. It also helps enhance “greater supply chain visibility to combat the distribution of counterfeit products and automation of paper based” processes.</p>\n<p>Manufacturers and producers of baby care products such as Luv N’ Care are of the view that blockchain technology will help combat the distribution of counterfeit products. Robert Chiavello, who represented the company at the congressional hearing, said blockchain was the right technology solution to determine the authenticity of products from production to final delivery point.</p>\n<p>He said:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“Today the pirated products we are facing are coming in by post with a foreign entity using e-retailers. They are copying our pics from our websites and then they use digital advertising and consumers think the products is related to us and companies then post the products straight to the consumer.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>The hearing was also told that blockchain enables collaboration in the shipping and logistics industry through ensuring the security and the flow of trustworthy of information. The industry has been <a href=\"https://www.econotimes.com/China-begins-work-to-establish-national-standards-for-blockchain-technology-Report-1303652\">pushing for standardized and collaborative blockchain</a> approaches, with China already working on this.</p>\n<p>This will allow participants under the platform to track and locate data on the processing of cargo and will also make it easy to access critical information for all partners to a transaction. Blockchain will help to “ensure real time visibility and enhances authentication” of transactions.</p>\n<p>Michael White, the head of global trade digitization at Maersk, told the hearing that supply chains were critical in global trade, with 80% goods traded around the world carried by shipping companies who now need enhanced and centralised management and monitoring platforms such as blockchain.</p>\n<p>The underlying values of deploying blockchain in the supply chain far exceeds its current limitations, although developers are continuously working on refining their platforms and applications, other members said.</p>\n<p>“Blockchain could bring together buyers and sellers together. Blockchain could enable greater transparency and assurances that duties are paid. Blockchain can have ability to track through supply chain. We have seen the tech used to track products such as diamonds and mangoes. It is responsible for the regulation and development of technology in the region, as well as the development of the knowledge economy within government.</p>\n<p>The intention is to provide a list of projects that researchers can evaluate as they seek to build out their own blockchain applications.</p>\n<p>The 28 cryptocurrencies in the inaugural index are: Ark, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, BitShares, ByteCoin, Cardano, Dash, Decred, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Hcash, IOTA, Komodo, Lisk, Litecoin, Monero, NANO, NEM, NEO, QTUM, Ripple, Siacoin, Steem, Stellar, Stratis, Verge, Waves and Zcash.</p>\n<p>The announcement from the CCID stated that the intention was to “scientifically evaluate the development level” of blockchain technologies. The formation of a dedicated CCID Blockchain Research Institute and the China Ecological Blockchain Alliance, will further efforts to organise and improve blockchain technology development, industry and policy research, for the benefit of the Chinese government and society.</p>\n<p>Earlier this week, it was announced that China’s government had begun working on <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-government-to-establish-national-blockchain-standards-by-2019-report/\">national standards</a> for blockchain technology and last month, the National Audit of the People’s Republic of China released an article indicating it was <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-pins-hopes-on-blockchain-technology-for-government-audits/\">looking at blockchain</a> to improve government auditing functions</p>\n<p>These announcements demonstrate a marked softening in China’s stance on blockchain and cryptocurrencies since last September. Back then, China’s central bank <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/breaking-chinas-central-bank-bans-icos/\">announced an immediate blanket ban</a> on all initial coin offerings (ICOs). The bitcoin price fell to $8,250 while the majority of tokens recorded losses in the 20 percent range. </span></p>\n<h2><b>UPbit + Mt. Gox</b></h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 11, CCN reported that UPbit, South Korea’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, was raided and investigated by local police, the Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (KIU) and Financial Services Commission (FSC). </span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-day raid at the UPbit headquarters led local investors in the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange market to panic sell, eventually affecting the global cryptocurrency market.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UPbit case coincided with the movement of more than 8,000 bitcoins from the Mt. Gox trustee, who previously stated that he will not sell any more of its funds until September of this year. The sudden sale of the Mt. Gox trustee funds and the unexpected investigation into UPbit led the entire cryptocurrency market to demonstrate a daily loss of $30 billion, from $400 billion to $370 billion.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, the cryptocurrency market peaked at $470 billion, as tokens such as Ziliqa (ZIL) and 0x (ZRX) along with both bitcoin and Ethereum recorded gains in the 5 to 40 percent range. Since then, the cryptocurrency market has recorded a loss of $100 billion, within a seven-day period. The market lost more than 20 percent of its value over the past week.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large-scale investors and analysts including Fundstrat’s Tom Lee and CNBC Fast Money’s Brian Kelly have expressed their optimism towards the short-term trend of the bitcoin price given the start of the Blockchain Week in New York marked by the opening of Consensus 2018, the largest cryptocurrency conference in which institutional investors, cryptocurrency startups, developers, and traders come together.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, BKCM founder Brian Kelly said on CNBC’s Fast Money that he was shocked investors did not push the valuation of the cryptocurrency market upwards after reports about the entrance of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) were released.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“I’m actually a bit shocked that the market did not pick up on this. Gox trustee has continued to sell <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/bitcoin-drops-8300-mt-gox-trustee-sell-off-continues-market-drops/\">massive chunks</a> of bitcoin on cryptocurrency exchanges, even after acknowledging that the sell off of tens of thousands of bitcoins can easily move the market that is already highly volatile.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, on May 11, various reports have suggested that the recent price dip of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies was triggered by the sell off of Mt. Gox coins. Four wallets of the Mt. Gox trustee moved around 2,000 bitcoins each, sending over 8,000 bitcoins in total over the past 24 hours. Considering that the Mt. Gox trustee was asked to sell over 200,000 bitcoins and convert it to Japanese yen by local financial authorities, it is evident that any external movement of the Mt. It was the first time the any government entity announced a rule that would affect cryptocurrency trading in India. There was no ban on trading Cryptocurrencies. Instead, not letting banks provide their services to exchanges heavily handicaps them because they will no longer be able to process fiat payments.</p>\n<p>To prevent a complete shutdown of trading, Cryptocurrency exchanges have been rampantly adding crypto-to-crypto trading pairs which never existed a few months ago.</p>\n<p>Just last week, <a href=\"http://www.zebpay.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zebpay</a>, India’s largest Cryptocurrency exchange announced six new crypto-to-crypto trading pairs. These include Ethereum, Bitcoin cash, and Ripple against BTC. Another popular exchange, <a href=\"http://www.unocoin.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unocoin</a> announced a new app where users would be able to trade popular cryptocurrencies against other cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p>Speaking with the <a href=\"https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/rbi-curbs-bring-about-crypto-to-crypto-trade/articleshow/64106156.cms\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Times</a>, Ajeet Khurana, the CEO of Zebpay said <em>“Even if there was no RBI circular, the crypto to crypto product would have happened. However, because of the circular and the fact that fiats may no longer be in the picture, it definitely did hurry up and encourage the solution sooner.”</em></p>\n<p>It is estimated that India has over 5 Million active traders and this is only set to increase. As the government clamps down fiat trades, traders have moved to over the counter solutions like <a href=\"https://localbitcoins.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LocalBitcoin</a>. Though India has a large number of traders, it makes up less than 1% of daily volume.</p>\n<p>Both traders and exchanges are not happy with RBI’s decision. Four different exchanges (Coindelta, Koinex, ThroughBit, and CoinDCX) have<a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/four-crypto-exchanges-combat-indian-central-banks-bitcoin-blockade-in-supreme-court/\"> moved to the Supreme Court</a> against the RBI. Another exchange, CoinRecoil has moved to the Delhi High Court, <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/delhi-high-court-issues-notice-to-rbi-union-of-india-and-gst-council-in-coinrecoils-petition/\">accusing RBI</a> of violating the Constitution through the ban. The contracts will begin trading at 4 pm UK time.</p>\n<p>Crypto Facilities chief executive Timo Schlaefer said in a statement that he believes the presence of regulated futures will bring more liquidity to ethereum, which is already the world’s second largest cryptocurrency by market cap.</p>\n<p>He said:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“Ether is the second most liquid cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, trading in the billions of dollars daily, and we are excited to be launching ETH futures. The Ethereum network is the pre-eminent blockchain for smart contracts, and we believe this new trading instrument will attract more investors and bring greater liquidity to the marketplace.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>Chicago-based trading firm Akuna Capital and London-based market maker B2C2 will provide liquidity for the ethereum futures product.</p>\n<p>Toby Allen, head of digital assets at Akuna, said that the firm is “looking forward to seeing this much-needed product fill a gap in the market. Gox trustee.</span></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/south-koreas-biggest-cryptocurrency-exchange-investigated-by-local-police-market-drops/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As CCN reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Seoul police along with the Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (KIU) and Financial Services Commission (FSC) have initiated an investigation into South Korea’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange UPbit with allegations of fraud and illicit movement of client funds to the accounts of the exchange’s executives.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The local police has yet to release its final report on the case and is expected to confirm its findings on Monday next week.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have secured hard disks and accounting books through confiscation. Analysis is expected to take days,” the authorities said, adding that the final report on the UPbit case will be released next week,” said local financial authorities.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sell off of cryptocurrencies by South Korean traders on UPbit along with the <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/8200-btc-moved-from-mt-gox-wallet-possible-sell-off-affects-bitcoin-price/\">possible sale of 8,000 bitcoins</a> by the Mt. Gox trustee led bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrency market to fall. </span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mt. Gox trustee previously stated that it is not in its plans to sell off parts of its 200,000 bitcoin holdings until late September. But, it moved more than 8,000 bitcoins to external wallets, triggering a domino effect across major cryptocurrency exchanges.</span></p>\n<h2><b>Market Turns Red </b></h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire market has fallen on May 11, without any exception. Though their crypto sales has outperformed their expectations, they expect it to come down in the coming months. With ethereum being the most popular cryptocurrency being mined on GPUs, Bitmain is expected to take a significant portion of chip-related market share <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/ethereum-asic-miners-set-to-hit-the-market-as-bitmain-begins-taking-preorders/\">when the Antminer E3 launches</a> later this year.</p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/bitmains-profits-rival-chipmaker-nvidia-analysts-say/\">Bitmain reported more revenue</a> last year than Nvidia, whose product line also includes components for cloud computing and AI. Nvidia reported $3 Billion in operating profit for the year, while Bitmain made nearly $4 Billion selling ASIC miners.</p>\n<p>Though Nvidia might not have the revenue of Bitmain, they made more crypto hardware sales than their GPU rival AMD. AMD reported first-quarter revenue of $1.65 Billion out of which 10% was crypto sales, indicating they made only $165 Million. Like Nvidia, AMD also expects mining revenue to decline in the coming days.</p>\n<p>Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, explained:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“The reason why they bought [GPU cards] is for gaming, but while they are not gaming; while they are at school, at work, or in bed — they will turn it on and do a little mining. There’s nothing wrong with that.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>When the demand for consumer GPUs for cryptocurrency mining shot through the roof, Nvidia <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/nvidia-prioritizes-gamers-cryptocurrency-miners-amid-card-shortages/\">tried controlling the sales</a> and ultimately failed. In some markets, retailers sell these graphics cards for as much as twice their actual cost because of the demand. The company just suspended Xiao Xieyi, the first blockchain mini-program on the platform.</p>\n<p>Xiao Xieyi, which was launched on Wednesday allowed users to create encrypt and create contracts on the Ethereum Blockchain without having to leave WeChat. We apologize, the content of the program has been suspended due to the fact that the content is not authorized on the platform.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>China took a hard stance against Cryptocurrencies this year, entirely banning their trade and ICOs. However, they are extremely optimistic about Blockchain. The government is hoping to have <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-government-to-establish-national-blockchain-standards-by-2019-report/\">Blockchain standards</a> in place by 2019 for products and services to make use of. Just last month, a $1.6 Billion fund was created to support local Blockchain startups with the help of the Government.</p>\n<p>However, the developer claims the App was not suspended because they use Blockchain, but because they encrypt the data. Wang Dengke, the founder of Niuco Box told Securities Daily, <em>“Mini-Programs are not allowed to have encryption features. Gox trustee.</span></p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/south-koreas-biggest-cryptocurrency-exchange-investigated-by-local-police-market-drops/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As CCN reported</span></a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Seoul police along with the Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (KIU) and Financial Services Commission (FSC) have initiated an investigation into South Korea’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange UPbit with allegations of fraud and illicit movement of client funds to the accounts of the exchange’s executives.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The local police has yet to release its final report on the case and is expected to confirm its findings on Monday next week.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">“We have secured hard disks and accounting books through confiscation. Analysis is expected to take days,” the authorities said, adding that the final report on the UPbit case will be released next week,” said local financial authorities.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sell off of cryptocurrencies by South Korean traders on UPbit along with the <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/8200-btc-moved-from-mt-gox-wallet-possible-sell-off-affects-bitcoin-price/\">possible sale of 8,000 bitcoins</a> by the Mt. Gox trustee led bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrency market to fall. </span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mt. Gox trustee previously stated that it is not in its plans to sell off parts of its 200,000 bitcoin holdings until late September. But, it moved more than 8,000 bitcoins to external wallets, triggering a domino effect across major cryptocurrency exchanges.</span></p>\n<h2><b>Market Turns Red </b></h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire market has fallen on May 11, without any exception. As such, investors expect the market to rebound soon.</span></p>\n<p>“Korea: This selling is coming from people taking their funds out of Upbit as they are concerned. These people are crypto investors and won’t leave crypto — they will go to other exchanges and buy there. expect a huge bounce,” said Ran.</p>\n<p>As the market did in previous Mt. It was the first time the any government entity announced a rule that would affect cryptocurrency trading in India. There was no ban on trading Cryptocurrencies. Instead, not letting banks provide their services to exchanges heavily handicaps them because they will no longer be able to process fiat payments.</p>\n<p>To prevent a complete shutdown of trading, Cryptocurrency exchanges have been rampantly adding crypto-to-crypto trading pairs which never existed a few months ago.</p>\n<p>Just last week, <a href=\"http://www.zebpay.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zebpay</a>, India’s largest Cryptocurrency exchange announced six new crypto-to-crypto trading pairs. These include Ethereum, Bitcoin cash, and Ripple against BTC. Another popular exchange, <a href=\"http://www.unocoin.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Unocoin</a> announced a new app where users would be able to trade popular cryptocurrencies against other cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<p>Speaking with the <a href=\"https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/rbi-curbs-bring-about-crypto-to-crypto-trade/articleshow/64106156.cms\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Times</a>, Ajeet Khurana, the CEO of Zebpay said <em>“Even if there was no RBI circular, the crypto to crypto product would have happened. However, because of the circular and the fact that fiats may no longer be in the picture, it definitely did hurry up and encourage the solution sooner.”</em></p>\n<p>It is estimated that India has over 5 Million active traders and this is only set to increase. As the government clamps down fiat trades, traders have moved to over the counter solutions like <a href=\"https://localbitcoins.com\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LocalBitcoin</a>. Though India has a large number of traders, it makes up less than 1% of daily volume.</p>\n<p>Both traders and exchanges are not happy with RBI’s decision. Four different exchanges (Coindelta, Koinex, ThroughBit, and CoinDCX) have<a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/four-crypto-exchanges-combat-indian-central-banks-bitcoin-blockade-in-supreme-court/\"> moved to the Supreme Court</a> against the RBI. Another exchange, CoinRecoil has moved to the Delhi High Court, <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/delhi-high-court-issues-notice-to-rbi-union-of-india-and-gst-council-in-coinrecoils-petition/\">accusing RBI</a> of violating the Constitution through the ban. The contracts will begin trading at 4 pm UK time.</p>\n<p>Crypto Facilities chief executive Timo Schlaefer said in a statement that he believes the presence of regulated futures will bring more liquidity to ethereum, which is already the world’s second largest cryptocurrency by market cap.</p>\n<p>He said:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“Ether is the second most liquid cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, trading in the billions of dollars daily, and we are excited to be launching ETH futures. The Ethereum network is the pre-eminent blockchain for smart contracts, and we believe this new trading instrument will attract more investors and bring greater liquidity to the marketplace.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>Chicago-based trading firm Akuna Capital and London-based market maker B2C2 will provide liquidity for the ethereum futures product.</p>\n<p>Toby Allen, head of digital assets at Akuna, said that the firm is “looking forward to seeing this much-needed product fill a gap in the market. The addition of a futures product enables crypto traders to take both long and short positions in ETH and is another giant leap in the development of the crypto asset class.”</p>\n<p>Crypto Facilities already offers <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/ripples-xrp-futures-gets-listed-derivatives-exchange/\">futures trading</a> for bitcoin and Ripple’s XRP token, and its trading data is included in CME Group’s Bitcoin Reference Rate (BRR), which is used to calculate the pricing of the Chicago-based exchange’s <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/cme-bitcoin-futures-exchange-is-officially-live-inflow-of-10-billion-expected/\">bitcoin futures</a> product.</p>\n<p>Last week, researchers at the Federal Reserve released a report arguing that the launch of bitcoin futures on CME triggered a widespread cryptocurrency market decline because it provided bears with the opportunity to easily take up short positions on the nascent asset. Cryptocurrencies present authorities with more challenges for catching “bad guys,” a company executive said Thursday.</p>\n<p>Cathy Bessant, <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/bank-of-america-admits-cryptocurrencies-are-a-threat-to-its-business-model/\">Bank of America</a>‘s chief technical officer, set the tone for what she sees as two distinct uses for cryptocurrency: payments and investing. As a form of payment, cryptocurrency is dangerous because it is not in line with banking’s policies for tracking payments.</p>\n<p>“The way we sort of quote-unquote catch bad guys is by being transparent in the financial [movement] of money,” she said, speaking from CNBC’s <a href=\"https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/10/bitcoin-as-a-payment-system-is-troubling-bofa-tech-officer-says.html\">Capital Exchange</a> breakfast series in Washington, D.C. “Cryptos is the antithesis of that.”</p>\n<p>She added:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“As a payment system, I think it’s troubling, because the foundation of the banking system is on the transparency between the sender and the receiver, and cryptocurrency is designed to be nothing of the sort. In fact [it’s] designed to be not transparent.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>Casting cryptocurrency in a good guy vs. bad guy narrative is a common theme for traditional banks and investment funds. Executives undervalue key pain points that cryptocurrencies attempt to resolve in the financial sector (such as slow payment settlement and transaction fees), while sounding alarm bells for criminal activity. BofA views cryptocurrencies loosely as stocks. Their customer policies thus reflect this line of thinking.</p>\n<p>“Just like we don’t allow stocks to be purchased on our credit cards, we’re not going to allow cryptos or other currencies to be purchased on our credit cards,” Bessant said.</p>\n<p>So while some banks classify concurrency payments with credit cards as cash advances (with high fees), BofA <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/jpmorgan-bank-america-say-no-crypto-transactions-credit-cards/\">doesn’t allow them</a> at all.</p>\n<p>As regulations for cryptocurrency are still in early stages, BofA stands out as a financial giant with a tough stance on the debate. To BofA it seems that the cryptocurrency space is full of hackers and modern day Robin Hoods. However, the bank is making improvements towards security every day, according to Bessant.</p>\n<p>“Awareness is higher, the sophistication of our defense and detection efforts are growing every day. There are more players in the mix with a lot of expertise, and the threat environment is beginning to show patterns that make prediction and even automated prediction something we can do every day. But before that happens, he believes ethereum will take bitcoin’s crypto-crown.</p>\n<p>Ver, once known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” told <a href=\"https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/ethereum-price-latest-updates-bitcoin-cash-roger-ver-crytocurrency-flippening-a8345166.html\">The Independent</a> that so-called technologically superior cryptocurrencies like ethereum and bitcoin cash will surpass bitcoin in value in the coming months and years. Ver sees ethereum surpassing bitcoin by year’s end and bitcoin cash by 2020.</p>\n<p>Analysts refer to this supposed development as “<a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/no-flippening-ethereum-price-recovers-correction/\">The Flippening</a>.”</p>\n<p>Ver pointed to slow transaction times and high fees undermining bitcoin. I’m sure that formula will continue to work for BCH into the future, and it will surpass BTC in usage, popularity, and market cap in the near future.”</p>\n<h2>Uncertainties Remain</h2>\n<p>Not all cryptocurrency experts agree with Ver.</p>\n<p>Michael Jackson, Skype’s former COO now working at Mangrove Capital Partners, said bitcoin can overcome its shortcomings and thereby offset other cryptocurrencies’ benefits.</p>\n<p>Jackson said solutions are being sought for bitcoin’s scalability issues. He further noted that bitcoin is by far the best-known cryptocurrency and the reserve cryptocurrency.</p>\n<p>Ver acknowledged that bitcoin could remain the top cryptocurrency, but he doesn’t think it is likely. Though their crypto sales has outperformed their expectations, they expect it to come down in the coming months. With ethereum being the most popular cryptocurrency being mined on GPUs, Bitmain is expected to take a significant portion of chip-related market share <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/ethereum-asic-miners-set-to-hit-the-market-as-bitmain-begins-taking-preorders/\">when the Antminer E3 launches</a> later this year.</p>\n<p>In fact, <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/bitmains-profits-rival-chipmaker-nvidia-analysts-say/\">Bitmain reported more revenue</a> last year than Nvidia, whose product line also includes components for cloud computing and AI. Nvidia reported $3 Billion in operating profit for the year, while Bitmain made nearly $4 Billion selling ASIC miners.</p>\n<p>Though Nvidia might not have the revenue of Bitmain, they made more crypto hardware sales than their GPU rival AMD. AMD reported first-quarter revenue of $1.65 Billion out of which 10% was crypto sales, indicating they made only $165 Million. Like Nvidia, AMD also expects mining revenue to decline in the coming days.</p>\n<p>Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, explained:</p>\n<blockquote><p>“The reason why they bought [GPU cards] is for gaming, but while they are not gaming; while they are at school, at work, or in bed — they will turn it on and do a little mining. There’s nothing wrong with that.”</p></blockquote>\n<p>When the demand for consumer GPUs for cryptocurrency mining shot through the roof, Nvidia <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/nvidia-prioritizes-gamers-cryptocurrency-miners-amid-card-shortages/\">tried controlling the sales</a> and ultimately failed. In some markets, retailers sell these graphics cards for as much as twice their actual cost because of the demand. It is responsible for the regulation and development of technology in the region, as well as the development of the knowledge economy within government.</p>\n<p>The intention is to provide a list of projects that researchers can evaluate as they seek to build out their own blockchain applications.</p>\n<p>The 28 cryptocurrencies in the inaugural index are: Ark, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, BitShares, ByteCoin, Cardano, Dash, Decred, Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Hcash, IOTA, Komodo, Lisk, Litecoin, Monero, NANO, NEM, NEO, QTUM, Ripple, Siacoin, Steem, Stellar, Stratis, Verge, Waves and Zcash.</p>\n<p>The announcement from the CCID stated that the intention was to “scientifically evaluate the development level” of blockchain technologies. The formation of a dedicated CCID Blockchain Research Institute and the China Ecological Blockchain Alliance, will further efforts to organise and improve blockchain technology development, industry and policy research, for the benefit of the Chinese government and society.</p>\n<p>Earlier this week, it was announced that China’s government had begun working on <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-government-to-establish-national-blockchain-standards-by-2019-report/\">national standards</a> for blockchain technology and last month, the National Audit of the People’s Republic of China released an article indicating it was <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/china-pins-hopes-on-blockchain-technology-for-government-audits/\">looking at blockchain</a> to improve government auditing functions</p>\n<p>These announcements demonstrate a marked softening in China’s stance on blockchain and cryptocurrencies since last September. Back then, China’s central bank <a href=\"https://www.ccn.com/breaking-chinas-central-bank-bans-icos/\">announced an immediate blanket ban</a> on all initial coin offerings (ICOs).
