      "body": "![Server cables](https://0x0.st/PTIv.jpg)\n*Source: [Pexels - Brett Sayles](https://www.pexels.com/photo/close-up-photo-of-plugged-cables-1624895/)*\n\nOk so this challenge really hit home for me because I have a story about a failed idea that I still think about sometimes.. and it still makes me cringe a little, tbh.\n\n## The Idea\n\nSo about 3 years ago I was working at a small hosting company here in Enugu. We had maybe 15-20 servers we were managing for clients, mix of web hosting, some databases, a few mail servers. The usual.\n\nThe problem was we had no real monitoring system. When something went down we would find out because a client called us angry.. or worse, we would find out the NEXT MORNING when we checked our phones and saw 15 missed calls. Not good.\n\nMy boss kept saying we should set up Nagios or Zabbix (these are proper server monitoring tools btw) but he never wanted to pay for the time to do it properly. So one weekend I decided — you know what, I'll just build something myself. How hard can it be right?? Just some bash scripts that check if services are running and send alerts.. easy.\n\nFamous last words ;-)\n\n## What I Actually Built\n\nI wrote maybe 20-30 bash scripts over that weekend. Each one checking diferent things — disk space, CPU usage, whether Apache was responding, if SSL certificates were about to expire, that kind of stuff. Then a master script that ran all of them every 5 minutes via cron and sent me WhatsApp messages (through some API I found online, cant even remember the name now) when something looked wrong. (I am thinking about Eminem now talking about mom's spagetti)\n\nfirst week it actually worked! I was so proud.. getting little alerts on my phone, fixing things before clients even noticed. My boss was impressed. I was thinking maybe I should package this and sell it, start my own saas or something idk.\n\n## Where It All Went Wrong\n\nThe problems started slowly. First it was false alarms.. the CPU check would trigger during normal backup windows because ofcourse backups use a lot of CPU. So I added exceptions. Then the disk space check needed exceptions too because some servers had temp files that would spike and come back down. More exceptions, more special cases, more \"if this server then do that instead\" logic.\n\nWithin a month my 20 scripts had become 60+ scripts. Each one had grown from 10 lines to 200+ lines. Some of them were calling other scripts. I had scripts checking if the monitoring scripts themselves were still running (yes really). It was a mess but it was MY mess and it worked.. mostly.\n\nThen one night at like 3am — I remember because NEPA had just brought back light and I was about to finally sleep — a major client's database server actually went down. Real outage, not a false alarm. And what happened?? My monitoring system sent me... nothing. I had no monitoring for my monitoring system.. well I DID but that script had a bug too where it only checked if the cron job was scheduled, not if it was actually succeding. So everything looked fine from the outside while the whole alerting chain was dead.\n\nclient found out before we did. Boss was furious. I spent the next day fixing it with zero sleep and plenty wahala.\n\n## What I Would Do Differently\n\nHonestly?? I should have just installed Zabbix from the start. Took me one weekend to build my frankenstein, it would have taken maybe 2-3 days to set up Zabbix properly. And Zabbix is battle-tested by thousands of companies, my bash scripts were tested by... me, on a good day, when I wasnt rushing. (spoiler: that company eventually restructured and my contract was not renewed.. not because of the monitoring thing specifically but lets just say it didnt help my case)\n\nThe bigger lesson though.. sometimes the \"quick and dirty\" solution feels smart because you're moving fast, but you're actually building junk that will eventually collapse on you. I was so excited about BUILDING something that I didn't stop to ask if building it was even the right move.\n\nThere is a saying in our field — \"don't reinvent the wheel.\" buttttttt..... I reinvented the wheel and it was square lOLOLO9LLLLLLLL.\n\nnow whenever I start a project I always ask myself first: does this already exist? Is there a proven tool for this? Because my ego telling me \"I can build it better\" is usually wrong.. or at best it means I can build it worse but in a way that I understand better, which is not the same thing at all.\n\n## Was The Failure Useful Though??\n\nYes actually! I learned more about Linux monitoring from that failure than from any course or tutorial. I understand WHY tools like Nagios and Zabbix are designed the way they are, because I hit every single problem they were built to solve;. And I became much better at bash scripting in the process even if my scripts were terrible. (my gf at the time said I was mumbling about servers in my sleep haha, I dont even doubt it)\n\nSo ya.. \"failure is more educational than success\" — I fully agree with that. But maybe try to fail on something that won't get you yelled at by your boss at 4am next time ;-)\n\n---\n\nLove Emeka / @delt\nPS! My name is Emeka! 32 now, sysadmin / dev (in between jobs at the moment) from Enugu, Nigeria.\n\nI created this account a while back because a friend showed me Steemit and I was curious... I was working at a hosting company at the time, managing Linux servers, and the idea of a decentralized social media built on blockchain sounded interesting so I jumped in. I powered up some Steem, learned the basics, but then work consumed all my time and I kept saying \"I will start posting next week.\" That next week never came. (LOL! Happens to me on many things in life I now realize.. ;-) ....).\n\nThen crypto winter happened, Steem price dropped and... yeah I just forgot about the whole thing for a long time.\n\n## So Why Now?\n\nSo about three months ago the company I was at restructured and my contract was not renewed. First time in years I actually have time on my hands. Was going through old backups looking for some project files and found my Steem keys.. and here we are!\n\n## Hobbies & Interests\n\nOutside of work.. I've always loved writing. Growing up I read tons of science fiction — Asimov, Octavia Butler, Nnedi Okofor (!! if you haven't read her work please do) — and I have notebooks full of short stories that I never published anywhere. Stories about technology, what the future might look like for Africa, traditional life meets modern tech.. some serious, some just me having fun. Like what happens if you gave a village chief root access to the internet? ;-)\n\nI also follow crypto pretty closely. Not really as a trader, more from the engineering side — how blockchains work, smart contracts, that kind of thing. I even bought a Cool Cats NFT during the hype in 2021... which is now worth close to nothing LOL. But I still use it as my profile picture because why not.\n\n## What Will I Write About????\n\nThinking about a mix of things:\n\n- Creative writing — short stories, speculative fiction, mostly tech-themed stuff\n- Tech posts — tutorials, tools I use, things I learn during job search\n- Life in Nigeria — Enugu perspectives, daily observations, the hustle\n- Contest entries — seen some interesting weekly challenges here and I want to try them!\n... ideas? anyone? well .... tbh, this already is ambitious but this is what I have in mind right now, can change over time, we'll see, we'll see!!\n\nSetting everything to 100% power up btw. Want to build stake here, not just grab and run. If Steem is still standing after all these years there must be something worth investng in right?\n\n## What I Am Looking For\n\nWant to connect with people, for example writers, devs, of course also other cool Nigerians, women are always welcome too LOL ;-) . ANd I am looking for upvotes, not gonna lie, I do feel some stress without a job at the moment but not desperate... If you know a community or group I should join please drop it in the comments!
