      "body": "Hey all I haven’t written anything on my blog in a while but here’s a little synopsis of an awesome trip I went on in to Malawi in August. Malawi is a small country east of Zambia and a popular vacation spot for Peace a Corps Zambia volunteers. One of the highlights of the country for tourists is Lake Malawi, one of the Great Lakes of Africa. The Great Lakes of Africa are part of the great Rift Valley caused by the African techtonic plate slowly splitting in two. ![37E0736C-C617-47A6-B0D5-C6E07487511D.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmePgyxtWedUvLBehcerqaBRVJNv5hEoNGCtdYhKePRz61/37E0736C-C617-47A6-B0D5-C6E07487511D.jpeg)\n\nLake Malawi is world famous not only for its beautiful beaches but also because it has the greatest diversity of cichlid fish in the world. Even just snorkeling you’re able to see fish of many different colors. \nThe first spot that my friends and I stopped at was mushroom farm, a clifftop lodge near Livingstonia. Mushroom Farm is owned by an American man named Cameron who made us feel very welcome. Mushroom Farm has beautiful scenic clifftop views of the lake and surrounding villages. In addition mushroom farm had some of the best food I’ve had since my arrival on the African continent. Everything is grown in their own garden and they even make their own coffee. A Malawian enclave in Mozambiquean territory we technically had to go through mozambiquean waters to get there. The island was super beautiful but there was only one drawback. Nkhata Bay definitely had a carribean feel, reggae music was bumping from every shop that you passed. We stayed at mayoka lodge, which was really cool and right by the water. During our travels we saw many baboons and vervet monkeys. Malawi stands as one of the coolest places I’ve ever been to and I’d reccomend it to anyone who wants a really nice vacation for a cheap price :)",

      "body": "Hey pals!\nI’m finally out at my site after 3 months of training! Right now I’m in what’s called “community entry” until mid July. Community entry is all about integrating and getting to know your community and during CE you’re not really supposed to travel anywhere, unless it’s for official Peace Corps reasons. \nSo far in the ville I’ve had a few meetings to explain my role as a volunteer in the LIFE program and assess what people in my community are into. The results were basically what Ba Bright, my host Dad/counterpart, told me people in the village wanted to do/learn about, which turns out is improved gardening techniques, making fish ponds, chicken rearing, and bee keeping. \nSince I’ve been in my village so far I’ve been harvesting with a different neighbor every weekday, as a way to get to know the people in my community. So basically I’ve been harvesting peanuts everyday, and afterwords whoever I’m harvesting with usually just loads my bag up with peanuts, so I have way too many at the moment.\nOne day though I was supposed to harvest with my neighbor Ba Andrew, who’s a community health worker and is going to be my counterpart for any health related work, but he told me that there’s an agriculture show in the town over from me. So we went to the show where people were displaying different crops they’ve grown. There was also a ton of traditional dancing going on, involving lots of drums and hip shakin’! The people around really wanted me to get up and dance so I did. The chiefteness of the area I live in was there and she gave me 5 kwacha (the equivalent of 50 cents USD) I guess because I tried so hard to do the dance thing. \nFor the next few weeks I’m going to work on making my garden, and it’s going to be an example garden, for different garden techniques.       "body": "Hey all\nSo I found out where I’ll be living for the next 2 Years! I’m going to be posted in northern province out in luwingu district. I’m super excited about. 2 weeks ago I was able to visit northern province and visit my future site. I also was able to meet many other volunteers who live in northern. Northern is known as the fun province and so far everyone I’ve met has been dope! \n\nAt my site I have a host family but it will be a little different than in training. Instead of like in training where I live on my families compound and they cook meals for me at my permanent site I have my own compound and my host family lives next door. I will cook my own meals and will generally have much more independence. My house in the village has 2 big rooms so I’ll have much more space than in my current hut. I’ll also have my own insaka (gazebo like hang out/cooking space). My host father will also most likely be my counterpart for activities I do in the village. He is very enthusiastic and I’m super excited that I get to work with him. \n\nSome activities he wants to do are implanting different gardening techniques, building a fish pond, and improved chicken raising. I will also be working at the local school possibly teaching 2 days a week.       "body": "Hey all,\nI’ve been having a wild time since I landed in Zambia a little over 2 weeks ago. Here’s and update on my first few weeks in Zambia and what my life is going to look like for the next 2 months. \nI landed in Zambia february 14th and was greeted by peace Corps staff at the airport. From there we were taken to a lodge outside the capital Lusaka, where we spent the next 3 day’s getting orientated and vaccinated, and hanging out throwing frisbees and playing Catan in our free time. I also found out I would be learning Bemba, the most prevalent language spoken in Zambia!\nAfter the 3 day’s us members of the LIFE program were driven to a village about 1.5 hours outside Lusaka where were going to live for all PST (pre service training). PST lasts through April and if all goes well I’ll be sworn in as an official Peace Corps volunteer at the beginning of May. \nDuring PST trainees live with host families and my host family is dope! My host family consists of my Ba Maayo (Mom in Bemba), a sister who’s around my age, and a brother who’s in middle school. There’s also a host of cousins, friends, and neighbors who are always popping by so it’s pretty lively. My family also has 23 chickens and a dog!\nWhile there’s no electricity or running water at my host families house there are solar powered lights and water is pumped up from a bore hole in the ground, and the pump is right next to our house so it’s super convenient. I have my own thatch roof hut separate from my families house, which has been nice to have my own space. The thatch roof has been great so far at keeping out rain, even during a storm where the thunder was so loud it shook my hut. \nPST is pretty busy btw. A typical day in PST consists of waking up at 6:30, having some breakfast with Ba Maayo then going to Bemba class in an insaka, which is like a gazebo that can also serve as an outdoor kitchen. Language class usually is 4 hours long. After learning some Bemba stuff I bike home for lunch and then the rest of the afternoon is spent doing technical training, such as learning how to make compost and identifying tree species that are useful in agroforesty. After that I usually hang out with some volunteers for a little while and then bike home. When I get home I usually shower (outdoor bucket bath, but Ba Maayo heats up the water beforehand so it’s nice!), eat dinner, and then go chill in my hut and study Bemba or read a book before passing out around 10.\nAnyway in the next few weeks I’ll learn what province and village I’ll be placed in permanently and later in PST I’ll go visit the site where I’ll be serving for 2 Years.       "body": "Hey everyone! My name is Dylan (Dill) Eldred and February 12th I'll be departing for Zambia where I'll be serving as a volunteer for the Peace Corps for the next 27 months. I have been selected to serve as Food Security Specialist for the LIFE (Linking Income, Food, and Environment) Project. This blog is going to be the place where I share stories and pictures about my experiences in Zambia.\n\n![rsz_1img_2059.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmR2W2FyzNmG6XKrkR45PhXPo6t15zehqhyUYyVNKtxVEy/rsz_1img_2059.jpg)\n\nWhile I know the basic gist of what the project entails it is definitely going to be a learning experience. Luckily there's three months of training before I get placed in my permanent village, which I will live in for the following two years. During Pre-Service Training, or PST, I will be educated on many topics. These will include lessons on Zambian culture, agricultural practices, and in depth language instruction. Though English is the official language of Zambia, there are actually over 70 languages spoken in Zambia!
