      "body": "In January, the collectible card game Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Dual was released, which was a breath of fresh air for me, among other games in the series. Yugioh wasn't based on magic the gathering, like Hearthstone, which makes Yugioh a new experience.\n \nIt amazes me that in its 20-year history, there have been many new cards with new mechanics. Dumbo was easily one of my least favorite of all the movies, but since I haven't watched it since I was a kid I couldn't remember why. And it turns out that why is that there isn't anything that happens in this movie, at least not enough to warrant being a movie. It is, at best, a TV short that got needlessly stretched out to the length of a movie.\n\nI'm not going to get much into the comedy as that is subjective, but the jokes just don't work for the most part. The talking train isn't random in a good way, it just... kind of talks and then things go on as normal. The Pink elephant acid trip (I don't believe for a moment it was alcohol spilled into the drinking water) was kind of interesting but entirely pointless. The only thing I liked about the movie was another entirely pointless scene, and that was the crows picking on Dumbo. Yes, they may have been racist caricatures of black people from back in the day, but they were funny and fun to watch, only really likable characters in the whole show (Okay, I do kind of like the Mouse too).\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmW1CK8irQ1gqNmTezYsdyiacSqqtTiMk7f8Sk4mRQB5gQ/image.png)\n\n\nThe worst thing about this movie is that it kind of paints the idea of being famous in the circus as a good thing while simultaneously painting the people running the circus as cruel monsters who care nothing for the animals in their service, yet the movie ends with Dumbo winning them over by becoming a star. If they at least treated the animals with some kind of decency and respect that would be fine, but they just don't.\n\nAll that aside, the movie does have some good points. The show does a really good job of telling a story without words. Not that characters don't speak, Dumbo of course doesn't, but you always know what characters are feeling without them having to say it, and it's especially true of Dumbo. Though the best moments involve the Mouse, who never actually talks about his history at all. At the same time, with how he acts towards Dumbo, mixed with how he defends him from the Crows and how fantastic his expressions are, you can piece together his past was likely very similar to Dumbo's and that is where their connection comes from. Unlike shorts seen in Fantasia which only told a simple and easy to follow the story with Sorcerers Apprentice, Dumbo manages to say even more without explicitly stating it as I explained with the Mouse. It's obvious that their ability to craft a great movie is only growing at this point, it's just held down by the movie itself being too flimsy to be a full-length movie, the writing part of it all still hasn't come into its own yet. Still, it's clear even from these early stages why Disney Movies were such big hits.",

What clearly happened here is I went in to watch an older anime film and clicked so bad I found a rejected Ted Talk on YouTube somewhere. A Ted Talk where the speaker is telling you that people are shit for an hour and eighteen minutes, and then has sex with a human woman that he is trying to convince everyone is an alien. Because if that isn't what just happened, what did just happen is I watched the most infuriatingly pretentious anime I have ever seen in my life.\n\nIt didn't even have the decency to be comically edgy about it. What little story is there, and I'll get to that in a bit, is completely overshadowed by eighty percent of the anime is one of the characters droning on and on about human nature while not having anything to say on the topic. It just boils down too 'Well people are kind of shitty, what can you do?'\n\nThe actual story is about how the world forgot everything. A wind came through and all memories, include who was your family, how to speak, and anything else was wiped from the world. Wataru is on a quest to teach the savages that remain of humanity what it means to be human, aided by a mysterious woman who seems to know everything. She exists to ask such difficult questions such as 'Is it right to stop this group of people from performing human sacrifices to their god just because we know it's wrong but they don't have the same information we do?' Let's just ignore that humans have only lost their memories and ability to speak for a few years and yet somehow one of them has learned to operate highly advanced machinery and set up a well-understood system of ritual sacrifice and the concepts of deities.\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNWwA1DU5kKowuVHVBAXUjTefedqsYCx5Pha9XoH4CMmf/image.png)\n\n\nIn his journey barely anything gets accomplished, so the movie feels like it ended how it started. I will give the show this though, the final confrontation with the security robot where it's led to the rooftop ends with a pretty fantastic scene, so I can't say there is nothing in this show worthwhile.\n\nAnd there is nothing more to say, the show is more interested in philosophizing about human nature (Badly) that it is about having an actual story to critique. It's the worst kind of show for me, and honestly, I can't think of a reason to sit down and subject yourself to getting preached to for an hour. Just skip this one.",

That said, Fantasia is kind of the most Disney of all the Disney animated films. It's an all-time classic, it is where I think Disney truly established themselves as a powerhouse of the movie industry, and to this day it is very fondly remembered by many. And yet..... I don't think it's very good.\n\nI will start by saying the movie doesn't have a story, at least not all of it. It's just animations set to classical music. You are just watching pretty imagery set to music, with only a couple of short stories being told depending on the animation being played on screen. And in that regard, the visuals are pretty superb throughout the whole movie. There will be no criticism of quality visuals here, but that being said this movie is two hours long. This is a lot of time to just kind of sit there watching pretty colors, no matter how well animated they are. And to be honest the early stages of the movie I find to be rather boring because nothing is happening. There is an incredible amount of talent going into the animation and its creativity, but in the end, most scenes of the movie don't feel worth sitting through.\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWzhE3tqndzzzkEFPBFo2ZUwqSvaLf1WKRurzGaKGx1ZD/image.png)\n\n\nThere are a couple of stories told in some of the scenes, most of which are rather underwhelming. The exception here is probably the most famous scene from the movie, and honestly the one that works great and can be enjoyed separately from the rest of the film, The Sorcerers Apprentice. With only the music and visuals, no dialogue needed at all, you see Micky Mouse as the over-eager apprentice who lets things go way out of control as he tries to use magic he doesn't fully understand. The animation is wonderful, the story is told very well, and there are plenty of funny bits throughout making this a great short that I have no criticism of.\n\nThe issue comes from the narrator, who for some reason explains exactly what happens in the story before it is told. And he does this for pretty much every scene that comes up. I get this was a movie made for kids, it's what Disney did, but this is where I start to feel like the movie thinks it's the audience is too dumb to figure out what's going on. Kids don't always need things explained to them, especially not something as simple as The Sorcerers Apprentice, it is done so well I don't think an explanation is necessary, and the same applies to most scenes in the movie. At it's best, this film is visually captivating like nothing else was at the time, and honestly, those scenes still look great today (The Chereabog/Devil being the obvious one to point to) all while managing to show that Disney is fantastic at building an atmosphere. But so much of the movie ends up being boring and forgettable, and to sit through it for two hours I think the best way to enjoy Fantasia is to just watch the good shorts and skip the rest.",

It really did feel like I was watching this for the very first time, even though I know that's not the case. So, after all this time, how does the movie fair?\n\nPretty well, and in a lot of ways I think it aged better than Snow White. The visuals are consistently fun and creative throughout, and while the characters are still basic they have a bit more life and depth to them then in Snow White. That said, it is still the early days of Disney so you shouldn't expect a whole lot of depth, just a nice simple story about a puppet trying to learn to be a real boy.\n\n\n![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcLMTXEZiBUncuUx955iLKJmTictnKM5CVWzmGkqFQSkH/image.png)\n\n\nThe first thing that kind of shook me is the thing most people remember about this movie is his nose growing when he tells a lie, but this only happens once in the entire show. Honestly even the whale bit, another memorable moment, is a very small portion of the film. Rather than being one long story, the movie is essentially three separate events that slowly teach Pinocchio how to be a real boy, which leaves very little to discuss on the plot.\n\nIt also leaves a lot of strange things unresolved. There exists in this movie a group that effectively captures children and forces them into a lifetime of servitude and once Pinocchio escapes it's just... never brought up again. I'm not gonna lie, this isn't going to stop bothering me for a while. I know that the whole point of all this is to teach Pinocchio to be a good boy, but none of the villains of the show ever get their retribution or even a resolution, they just exist out there doing evil stuff to this day I guess.\n\nI briefly brought this up earlier, but the visuals are great in this movie. All the different clocks which not only look great but show off the kind of person Geppeto, Pinocchio's father, is. There are a lot of great visual gags throughout, and a big variety of characters to see. The movie is so vibrant and colorful, but at the same time can create a very dark atmosphere when things get serious. It's a good lesson for the kids, try to be a good kid. I like that while Jimminy is the conscience even he gets frustrated and gives up early sometimes. It's not a movie about having to be perfect, but one of always trying your best to be a good person. I still don't think it's a great movie, but I do appreciate it more now than when I saw it as a kid.",
