doctoralanpublished a new post: finding-your-passion

| body | Have you found your passion? Do you leap out of bed in the mornings so turned on by something that sleeping-in and that warm bed seems just such a waste of time? Are you so motivated and inspired by something in life that the very thought it gives you ‘goose bumps of the mind’? What will you put up with discomfort for? What will you willingly expend huge amounts of time, energy, money and effort on... just because it gives you massive amounts of pleasure? For a person who lives their passion ‘work’ doesn’t exist; ‘effort’ doesn’t exist. Everything they do is a unique expression of their true self. Sounds nice, huh? And if you’ve found your passion, great! But do you get enough of it? Is it just one activity? Does it frustrate you a bit ‘cos you can’t get enough of it? What if you could actually get paid to live it!? Would that be good? The majority of people to go through life with a sense that they are not completely fulfilled. They are never completely satisfied; they are in a constant state of mild frustration and talk about life as being a “drag” or a “battle”. They feel that there “must be something more to life” but never quite find it. Why is that? Would it be useful to start living a rich, meaningful existence instead? The thing with our passions is that people think they are an activity, a hobby or a particular way of living. That’s fine but what happens when they can’t do that activity or something interrupts that lifestyle? They get dejected, resigned to ‘the grind of life’. Upset and frustration set in... or even anger or resentment. Sound familiar? Not much fun is it? Well, that’s because you’ve mistaken the activity for your real passion. ‘Challenge’, ‘engagement’, enjoyment’, ‘pleasure’, ‘fulfilment’ etc. are the real passions! These are the states or feelings you get from the activity or lifestyle. Ask yourself or anyone who has a hobby or activity they get lost in; “why do you do that”? and you’ll hear, “because it makes me feel... X” or “because it gives me a sense of... Y”. You’ll hear that they are talking about an internal reward – and that is the real passion; they’re ‘hooked on a feeling’. When you realise that the activity itself isn’t actually the passion, you can take that sense of passion and spread it around your life even more. You can connect the feeling – the real passion – to almost every aspect of life... imagine that! So passions are actually High Positive Values – unconscious, multi-layered, unique combinations of internal states. It’s great when by chance we find or grow into an activity that gives us these passionate states of reward, but the activity itself is just an activity. Here’s an example; if someone says “I love freshwater fishing, it’s my absolute passion”. And I ask the question, “Why?” After some mental searching the person may say something like, “It’s just so peaceful. It’s a break from responsibility; I’ve always loved it, my Dad used to take me fishing. It reminds me of the carefree days of being a kid and having fun like we did on family holidays.” From this description we can find multi-layered states of high personal value; ‘family togetherness’; ‘child-like care-freeness’; ‘fraternal care’; ‘nostalgia’ (positive memories); ‘love’; all wrapped up in ‘inner-peace’. Wow, with all these positive states attached to it, is it any surprise that the simple activity of freshwater fishing is so compelling? It’s so compelling that they’ll spend loads of money on it, get up at the crack of dawn or stay out late at night in the cold and rain, devote hours of their spare time to it… not for the activity, but for the pleasurable states they get from the activity. Now the great thing is that if this is an internal state that’s been linked to and external activity, we can also link that state to other activities. So if you’ve found your passion, identify the states behind it – and spread them to other areas of life. Or if you’ve not found an activity that really grabs you yet, identify the unique sets of states and feelings that would really get you going; access them by thinking-and-feeling yourself fully into that state and connect them to activities in your life or invent activities through which you can express them. How? Learn some basic Neuro-Semantics or NLP, either at a training or I’m happy to recommend some good books. Or find a certified Meta-Coach© who can help you unlock your inner genius and passions... or book a Skype or face to face coaching session with me if you like? Email: [email protected] or phone: (+64) 021 260 5486 Now, what gives you immense pleasure? Initially you’ll think of an activity, but what are the unique combination of states that you get from it? Leave a comment below, you might just be an inspiration to others. |

| body | Well put. I totally agree. Online learning allows students to re-watch recorded lectures and pick up bits they may have missed. The one problem I may see is that of students who are not learning because they 'want' to but because they 'have' to (as in your training employees example) not actually doing the course work themselves but outsourcing papers. |

| body | Welcome to steemit! I know that steemit may seem very overwhelming to you right now but don't worry. There's a learning curve to everything so just be patient and you'll be churning out posts and becoming a part of something great in no time! Also if there are any questions that you may have, then just ask your questions on any of my blog posts or in a reply below and I'll be more than happy to assist you with whatever questions you may have! I will also be creating a basic starting out guide for all minnows and newcomers on my blog so do give it a read as that might help answer many of your questions! Have fun and I wish you LOADS of success on here! :) Also. you can call upon originalworks whenever something you post is your own content like this: @originalworks Regards @welcome-to-steem |

| body | Welcome to Steemit! It can be an amazing place. So much information and some amazing people. If anyone told you that you will get rich here.... don't believe it. Though a few have made some thousands without any investment, most big players invested a lot of their own money to BOOST their performance. Community is key here. If you don't make friends, it will be near impossible to get people to read your blogs. Even then, it comes very slowly. Look up MSP(Minnow Support Project) and MSP Pal Net on Discord app. You will want to go to @minnowsupport and then join the Discord group. As for Posts... you have 5 tags you can add. You don't have to use 5. The first one is the one YOU CANNOT edit. So make sure the first is correct. But please don't use tags that don't apply. If I am posting about the pizza that I just ate, I shouldn't tag it as STEEM or CREATIVEWRITING (unless... of course I narrate it as some interesting story full of mermaids and hidden treasure). You can search tags by typing in: www.steemit.com/created/tagyouwanttosearch like www.steemit.com/created/canada This will get you started on finding Steemians with similar interests. Oh... and if you haven't yet... do read through a few of the sections and resources on https://steemit.com/welcome IT is really helpful! I am a volunteer here. Mostly I search for people abusing the steemit platform. But I try to greet new users as well and provide some helpful advice. Hopefully I have done that for you! Take care and goodluck! |

"body": "Welcome to Steemit!\nIt can be an amazing place. So much information and some amazing people. If anyone told you that you will get rich here.... don't believe it. Though a few have made some thousands without any investment, most big players invested a lot of their own money to BOOST their performance.\n\nCommunity is key here. If you don't make friends, it will be near impossible to get people to read your blogs. Even then, it comes very slowly. Look up MSP(Minnow Support Project) and MSP Pal Net on Discord app. You will want to go to @minnowsupport and then join the Discord group.\n\nAs for Posts... you have 5 tags you can add. You don't have to use 5. The first one is the one YOU CANNOT edit. So make sure the first is correct. But please don't use tags that don't apply. If I am posting about the pizza that I just ate, I shouldn't tag it as STEEM or CREATIVEWRITING (unless... of course I narrate it as some interesting story full of mermaids and hidden treasure).\n\nYou can search tags by typing in: www.steemit.com/created/tagyouwanttosearch like www.steemit.com/created/canada\nThis will get you started on finding Steemians with similar interests.\n\nOh... and if you haven't yet... do read through a few of the sections and resources on https://steemit.com/welcome\nIT is really helpful!\n\nI am a volunteer here. Mostly I search for people abusing the steemit platform. But I try to greet new users as well and provide some helpful advice. Hopefully I have done that for you!\nTake care and goodluck!",

| body | Do you deceive yourself? I do, and I bet you do too. But in order to be truly effective in the world and cut through the bull-sh*t, we need to be able to define a situation in real and accurate terms and to avoid judgements, mind reads and personal biases. However, these biases are everywhere. Most of us have heard of the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character invented by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes once remarked to Dr Watson; “Insensibly, one begins to twist the facts to suit theories instead of theories to suit facts”. Though a cool line in a novel, this quote alludes to a startling truth – that all of us are deceiving ourselves! “What? Not me!” I hear you cry. But yes, even the best of us deceives ourselves on a daily basis with a truck load of self-lies and self-deceptions. These lies we tell ourselves are deeply rooted in our past experiences, upbringing, culture and even in the biology of our brains. So what are they? They come in the form of ‘cognitive distortions’ and ‘cognitive biases’. There are well over a hundred of these tricks that we play on ourselves and they occur in every area of life; decision making, memory, social contexts, personal beliefs… everywhere! I’ll explain just four here as well as give you a tip for each to ‘reality test’ the distortion/bias. OVERGENERALISING – when we overgeneralise, we take a specific example and apply it to other areas where it may not actually be true or even relevant. It could be with both with good or bad things. For example, if your boss says “Well done, you did a good job on that project”, you might overgeneralise this into the idea that everything you do is great, that you can’t make mistakes, and that what you do is always right. Without keeping this in check, you may become haphazard in your approach to things or even dismissive of others. Or the simplest example of overgeneralising is when one thing goes wrong, e.g. at work; and you overgeneralise that the ‘whole day is ruined’ and take your bad mood home to your family. Tip: listen to how you speak to others (and to yourself); if you use words and thoughts such as ‘all, never, always, every, everywhere’, etc. you may be overgeneralising! Learn to hold events, feeling, ideas, etc. to their specific contexts. MIND READS – mind reads are when we claim to know the thoughts of others. When you hear yourself say, “I know he/she has got it in for me” … “I knew they weren’t going to say yes”, or quite simply “I know what you’re thinking” – then you’re mind reading. Tip: ask yourself “How do I know? What is the real-world evidence that lets me know?” PROPHESYING – prophesying is a bit like ‘negative mind reading into the future’. You take a negative mind read and project it into the future; “I just know I’ll fail” … “it won’t work, people don’t want to buy my product/service”… “they’re bound to let me down”… “she won’t hire me”. The trouble with prophesying is that it stops us from even attempting anything and will often become a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom. Tip: if you catch yourself prophesying, apply ‘tentative predictive thinking’; look at the evidence and ask yourself, “What could go right, what could go wrong? Based on the evidence, what are the realities of this situation and what possible outcomes could there be?” JUDGEMENTS – a judgement is forming an idea based on your own assumptions, beliefs, values, prohibitions, permissions, etc. We all judge – for good and for bad – and it’s a necessary process in daily life. However, it can create conflicts and misunderstandings though. Tip: reality test your thinking. Learn to create judgements based only on real world, sensory based information. Put your beliefs aside, step back from the situation to gain more clarity. A big warning! Most of what I’ve said to avoid these distortions and biases is to ‘reality test and look for real world evidence’. But be cautious even here – your biases will often distort the ‘evidence’ that can then confirm the bias/distortion! The world of communication is a minefield of potential disasters. NLP and in particular Neuro-Semantic trainings offer ways to identify and guard against such distortions. Sadly most people go through life living an un-real personal reality. The danger here is that reality will catch up with you and then the ‘kick in the arse’ that life gives you can be a very painful reality check indeed. Remember, ‘the mind makes a cruel master, but a wonderful slave’. |

| body | Hello Steemians, I’d like say hello, that I’m excited to be here and let you know who I am and the kinda stuff I’ll be posting. Let’s make it easy… I’m Alan, English but live in NZ, a Doctor of Clinical Hypnosis and an NLP and Neuro-Semantics Master Trainer. OK, that’s not very easy, is it? Well, you’ve probably heard of hypnosis; NLP and Neuro-Semantics is basically really cool positive psychology stuff turned into easy to use techniques. Is that better? But how did I get here? Well, good question, because I didn’t always do this… So a heads up here, the rest of this post tells my personal story. It’s my personal journey of going through near death and a lot of struggles. Feel free to skip it if you’re not interested, but please keep in touch. Ok, from the mid 90’s up until 2001 I was, well... a complete shit in many ways. You see, in the mid 90’s my life spun out of control… I was just an average bloke in my 20’s working at my trade as a glass cutter/glazier. But on 21st Aug 1995 I had an accident at work that almost killed me, and left me technically ‘disabled’ (although I refuse that term)…. A 1.22x2.14 metre piece of glass I was carrying broke on me. It almost severed my left arm at the elbow, I suffered 45% blood loss and had to be evacuated by helicopter to hospital where I needed emergency surgery just to save my life. The medics on the scene were incredible. They put plasma lines in both my feet and my good arm to stop my veins and arteries collapsing – that would have killed me. The surgeons, doctors and nurses all did an amazing job and even saved my arm from total amputation; it was touch-and-go… it still doesn’t work properly, never will. But I’m alive and that’s thanks to those amazing men and women who literally saved my life. But that accident and the subsequent recovery was a hard adjustment to make. I hit a low point in my life that lasted years and brought with it all kinds of trouble; …booze, violence… lots of very bad things! Then around 2000 I said to myself “C’mon Alan, you gotta sort your life out, if you carry on like this, …it’s not gonna end good!” But could I turn my life around from such a major low point? Well, I did have one natural talent; I’ve always been able to understand people, y’know, what makes ‘em tick. I’d notice themes and patterns in people and their behaviours that seemed pretty obvious to me, but almost everybody else seemed to miss. Here’s an example, when I was working as a nightclub doorman it was like I could ‘just tell’ who was going to cause trouble, and so I could easily diffuse bad situations before they ever got started. One of my bosses once commented when I was moving on, “I’ll be sorry to see you leave, Al, there’s hardly ever any trouble when you’re working the door”. I even used to be able to throw people out/get people to leave – and have them shake my hand and say thanks… for me throwing them out! I just had a way with influencing people, and making them happy, no matter what the situation. I’ve even taught this professionally to door staff and bar workers. So I decided to build on this natural strength, to leverage it. I devoted myself to learning all about PRACTICAL positive psychology; how to control my mind, how to think better, how to change my life ‘from the inside, out’. You know, not just all theory and research but real-world techniques that anyone with a brain can use to make a huge difference in their lives. So that’ll be the stuff I Steem about by the way. Since that decision, I’ve just kept learning. And things have gotten better and better… with the occasional exception like the major earthquakes that devastated my beautiful home town of Christchurch here in NZ throughout, 2010-11, that was tough, on everyone. But even those events taught me real ways how to face adversity and overcome pretty much anything; loss, death, stress, anxiety… and I was even able to help countless other people to do that too, I’ve even written a book on it. So that’s my initial post… if you’ve read this far – well done! I’m looking forward to getting to know others in this community, so leave a comment, say hi, and let’s start some chats going. Cheers, Alan |

I even used to be able to throw people out/get people to leave – and have them shake my hand and say thanks… for me throwing them out! \nI just had a way with influencing people, and making them happy, no matter what the situation. I’ve even taught this professionally to door staff and bar workers.\n\nSo I decided to build on this natural strength, to leverage it. I devoted myself to learning all about PRACTICAL positive psychology; how to control my mind, how to think better, how to change my life ‘from the inside, out’. You know, not just all theory and research but real-world techniques that anyone with a brain can use to make a huge difference in their lives. So that’ll be the stuff I Steem about by the way.\n\nSince that decision, I’ve just kept learning. And things have gotten better and better… with the occasional exception like the major earthquakes that devastated my beautiful home town of Christchurch here in NZ throughout, 2010-11, that was tough, on everyone. \n\nBut even those events taught me real ways how to face adversity and overcome pretty much anything; loss, death, stress, anxiety… and I was even able to help countless other people to do that too, I’ve even written a book on it. \n\n\nSo that’s my initial post… if you’ve read this far – well done! I’m looking forward to getting to know others in this community, so leave a comment, say hi, and let’s start some chats going.\n\nCheers,\nAlan",
