      "body": "We own Bitcoin. We’ve participated in ICOs. We believe in Blockchain. Yet we also believe that the crazy boom will have a bust. When it does, we think something much more important will be built out underneath it all. If you’re interested to learn what years of history teaches us is a phenomenal long term investment opportunity, after the bubble bursts, then read on.\n\nThe evolution of the cryptocurrency and underlying blockchain infrastructure is in its earliest phases, but the cycle of value creation itself is old. We’ve been watching these patterns for decades, if not centuries — South Sea Bubbles and Dutch tulips, anyone? Time and time again, emergent technology markets follow a clear evolution, described by researcher Carlota Perez as a progression through several phases. This pattern will hold true for blockchain technology. Yet, from its ashes arose a hugely valuable foundational infrastructure for the web as we know it today.\n\n![Screen Shot 2018-03-12 at 11.03.25 AM.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaLUHmPvSwAdS2RSHnnNMhaEPQkR1SjBALug6GdQGVdLE/Screen%20Shot%202018-03-12%20at%2011.03.25%20AM.png)\n\nFrom web standards and browsers such as Firefox to programming languages like JavaScript and RESTful architectures, massive value creation ensued in the buildout/redevelopment phase, eventually far exceeding what was lost in the bust, making a pathway for giants such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Salesforce and many other social, mobile, commerce and other platforms we take for granted today.\n\nBut there are some important differences we’re seeing in this particular cycle.\n\nNormally, venture capital would be financing the initial development of all this. On the positive side, it’s providing immediate access to capital. On the other hand, many of these buyers don’t understand the essential difference between equity and utility in the coins or tokens they are buying and the inevitable regulation ahead. Just a small fraction can explain the underlying value. “Buyer beware” should be “buyer begone” unless you understand these points. Or else it will end up as “buyer be bust”.\n\nUnaware buyers piling in unwittingly is a sure sign of a buildup to a bust in ICOs.\n\nThe picture is more understandable when looking at Bitcoin, especially if you’re a citizen of an economy like Venezuela, where your printed currency value has dropped precipitously. Assuming that Bitcoin solves the issues of scalability, speed and security, it has the potential to avoid the inflationary issues of currencies like the Venezuelan bolívar.\n\nIn the meantime, we must separate Bitcoin and ICOs from Blockchain.\n\nThere’s an irony here.       "body": "<html>\n<h1><strong>Why We Invested In SmartContract</strong></h1>\n<blockquote><em>Getting Beyond the Chain: Solving the Connectivity Problem, a Key Limiting Factor for Smart Contract&nbsp;Adoption</em></blockquote>\n<p>We are excited to announce our latest blockchain investment behind Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, the founders of SmartContract (<a href=\"http://smartcontract.com/\">www.SmartContract.com</a>).</p>\n<p>As we touched upon in our “<a href=\"https://underscore.vc/thesis\">Trusted Cloud Intelligence</a>” investing thesis, <em><strong>we believe the next generation of cloud infrastructure will have trust, security, and intelligence built in</strong></em><strong>.</strong> These will be features as native and as fundamental as connectivity to the internet is itself.</p>\n<p>The recent breach of Equifax reminds us how out-of-date and vulnerable our personal data is when centralized. We have put trust into intermediaries to secure our data in repositories that are not often even aware of the various uses of that data and potential breaches to it. Moreover, critical data is constantly being transmitted across the information supply chain with little guarantee of its security and no record or audit trail of it’s use.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em><strong>It is a broken system at best, that is full of friction and shortcomings, and at worst, too easily targeted and breached.</strong></em></p>\n<p>That is why we are excited to see leading entrepreneurs like Sergey and Steve bringing the promise of real “smarts” into the next generation of cloud infrastructure, with new foundational technologies like smart contracts and oracles on the Blockchain that have trust, security, and intelligence natively built in.</p>\n<blockquote><em>For those who aren’t as familiar with the promise and challenge of ‘smart contracts’  (which is probably NOT the Steemit crowd!) — very simply, they are software code on the blockchain that is</em> <em><strong>guaranteed to execute</strong></em><em>. Smart contracts codify “what should be done automatically” and remove the error prone manual efforts around existing digital agreements.</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em>Unfortunately, because of their underlying consensus protocols, the blockchains on which smart contracts run cannot support native communication external systems and data.</em></blockquote>\n<blockquote><em><strong>In short, the “smart” contracts are actually “dumb” (simple) without external data!</strong></em> <em>This is a fundamental limitation that is solved by ‘oracles’ securely linking to external data and in turn, making smart contracts truly smart!</em></blockquote>\n<p><img src=\"https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1600/0*nW5z8d1BDHtDtWRr.\" width=\"467\" height=\"226\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<blockquote><em><strong>SmartContract ChainLink: A decentralized oracle network that makes dumb contracts smart.</strong></em></blockquote>\n<p>Today, your best alternative to link external data into the blockchain is through a centralized solution. Want to grab the interest rate via API? → You’ll have to send it through a centralized service that any that could be manipulated and completely change the payout of the <em>self-executing</em> smart contract (not a small deal when $ millions are being payed out automatically and immutably!). <strong>Current approaches to ‘oracles’ that access external data induce a single point of failure solved by SmartContract’s ChainLink Network, a</strong> <em><strong>decentralized</strong></em> <strong>oracle network to provide trusted linking to external data and resources</strong>.As pointed out in the team’s <a href=\"https://link.smartcontract.com/whitepaper\">whitepaper</a>, <em>some of the most interesting applications of smart contracts rely precisely on this external information from the real world feeds and APIs.</em>Here are just a few examples of powerful smart contracts that bring in external data to the blockchain to automate contract execution:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li><strong>Financial Securities smart contracts</strong> — financial instruments such as bonds, interest rate derivatives, and many others will require access to APIs reporting market prices and market reference data (e.g. interest rates, or CDOs that can not only legally be a slice of the underlying collateral, but automate directly into the money flows behind it), all without any manual effort or an intermediary.</li>\n  <li><strong>Insurance smart contracts</strong><em> — </em>will need data feeds related to the insurable event in question (e.g. an agricultural insurance policy which pays out conditionally based on the quantity of rainfall in a given month, or a payment for the flight insurance you had for an departure later than you expected).</li>\n  <li><strong>IoT smart contracts </strong>— can provide sensor data to smart contracts — one example is supply chain custody that fuels commerce fulfillment, with data goods being shipped that can self-confirm arrival and in turn, payment without any manual intervention.
