The Overview of DxChain Testnet 3.0\n\nDxChain is committed to building a decentralized big data storage and computing network with high security and efficiency, transforming the unequal production relations and economic distribution systems of the traditional big data market through our technological innovation, and enabling each data subject to achieve personal data privacy protection, storage security and value realization.\n\nAccording to the development plan announced last year, establishing a stable and efficient decentralized storage network on a global scale is the foundation for implementing DxChain's innovative \"Chains-on-chain\" architecture. Therefore, we planned to develop and expand the DxChain storage network first, and then move on to the development of the big data computing network.\n\nIn the release of DxChain Testnet Alpha and Beta in 2018, we have demonstrated the basic features of the DxChain storage network, including block generation, file uploading and downloading. In addition, we also released the DxChain Testnet SDK and the first blockchain cloud storage product DxBox successfully. After the release of Testnet 2.0 in early 2019, the DxChain research and development team continued to optimize the existing decentralized system and file storage algorithms, and finally completed the productization and released Testnet 3.0 in 2019 Q2.\n\nCompared to the previous Testnet versions, DxChain Testnet 3.0 version implemented the well-tested large-scale storage function, a series of new features and improved algorithms, including:\n\n1) Implemented the Off-chain Storage Contract, which is a payment protocol like lightning network between the storage client and the storage host, so that all small storage transactions can be completed quickly off-chain, increasing the efficiency and scalability of the system.\n2) Improved the consensus protocol design to make the current PoW + PoST consensus protocol as a plug-in for the system, so that the consensus algorithm could be upgraded and optimized easily in the future (In fact, we are considering to use the consensus algorithm combining DPoS and PoST in the Mainnet for better support to the new storage economy model).\n3) Optimized the storage contract system which is compatible with Ethereum virtual machines and Solidity smart contracts, and enhanced the adaptability and compatibility of DxChain storage networks when deploying different types of applications to DxChain, making the whole system more developer-friendly.\n4) Fully upgraded the file storage algorithm and completed various algorithm optimizations (such as White Ahead Log, Reed-Solomon...) to ensure the user data security in any hardware and software environments.\n5) In addition to the updates on the fundamental architecture, we also delivered the node program for users with personal computers for the first time. That means users all over the world can run a DxChain Testnet test node as long as their hardware, software and network meet the very basic requirements, and can use their idle hard drives and storage capacity as the computing power to participate in the DxChain mining.\n\n# 2. In this way, developers can deploy their Solidity smart contracts into DxChain with almost no modification, and also they can use the powerful functions of storage powered by DxChain at the same time.\n\n2) A lightning network like payment protocol between the storage client and the storage host has been implemented in DxChain Testnet 3.0, as a consequence, all small storage transactions can be completed quickly off-chain.\n\n3) The file storage algorithm has been fully upgraded, and various algorithm optimizations (including White Ahead Log, Reed-Solomon...) to ensure that the user's files will not be lost even in the worst hardware and software environment.\n\n\n## 5. There’s no big news for DxChain for a long time. When will be a new partnership with other blockchain projects?\n\nAs I just said, the DxChain Testnet 3.0 and Mainnet alpha is around the corner. And we plan to release the core code of Testnet 3.0 to the public after the launch of this version. The frequency of code updating on Github is quite low. What’s the reason?\n\nAt present, DxChain's technical architecture is still in a high rapid of iteration. We are continuously testing and optimizing the consensus algorithms for better security and performance. Since some parts of the code are not ready for open source, the progress of the project development cannot be reflected on the Github now.\n\n## 2. How to solve the transparency problem of code updates?\n\nDxChain is a determined supporter of the open source community. We will gradually release the well-tested core code in the near future, and enable more technology enthusiasts and investors to understand DxChain's technological innovation as well as attract more talented developers to join the DxChain network and ecosystem.\n\nSince founded in April last year, the DxChain’ core R&D team has been focusing on the chain development and storage related Dapps, and released two versions of Testnet, SDK and various application products. We are confident that we are able to get the trust and support from the community.\n\n## 3. I saw your photo at Harmony’s party. Will there be a potential partnership with Harmony?\n\nI will say it’s very likely. The total DX token supply is high and distributed unevenly, how do you think?\n\nWe thoroughly considered the applicability of DX token as a utility token in the future construction and development of DxChain ecosystem. According to the distribution plan, total tokens for sell account for 25% of the total DX supply, 10% of the total supply is distributed to the foundation, core team, marketing and business development. Those tokens are mainly used for the operation and rapid development of the project.\n\nThe remaining 45% of the tokens will be used to promote DxChain ecosystem construction and development, including economic incentives for miners, storage nodes, verification nodes, etc.\n\nAt present, we haven't received any doubts from investors or communities about the distribution of DX token.\n\n## 5. Is DxChain using PoS or PoW?\n\nThe current DxChain Testnet 2.0 uses PoW + PoST for the consensus protocol. \n\nIn the next version of DxChain project, the consensus protocol is designed as a plugin of the system. And we are considering DPoS + PoST as the major algorithms in the Mainnet alpha, and run all the other consensus protocols(PoW, PoA, VRF...) in different Testnets to find out the most suitable and efficient solution.\n\n\n## 3. The Bitcoin and ETH are up since last week, why DX price is still low?\n\nActually the Bitcoin’s soar last week caused almost all altcoins suffered for a while, including ETH. What’s the implication of DxChain Testnet 2.0?\n\nThere are several important implications for the combination of DxChain Testnet 2.0 smart contracts and storage contracts:\n\n1) The original storage contract only supports automated contract renew and money distribution. However, by combining it with the smart contract, more features can be implemented. Any developer can add features and create new products accordingly without modifying the source code.\n\n2) Based on our testing, the smart contract feature we developed in Testnet 2.0 is 100% compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, that means for any DApps running on the Ethereum can directly run on the DxChain as well. It saves developers tons of time on solving issues occurred while migrating the application from Ethereum to DxChain.\n\n3) The current Ethereum smart contract cannot be used for storage transactions or applications. Even though the Swarm, a distributed storage platform, is developed based on the Ethereum, it is highly unstable. The smart contract developed by DxChain can be fully combined with the storage contract, adding more flexibility to the original storage contract and making the off-chain storage operations more efficient.\n\n4) Currently, most distributed applications are developed based on Solidity. Learning and using a new language to develop smart contracts will greatly increase development costs. So, we will think about the token buyback/burn program if it meets the community’s expectation. \n\n\n\n## 2. Why the marketing promotion is so weak in Russia?\n\nIndeed, we haven’t put enough resources on the Russian market. Actually, we had lots of fans in Russia before the ICO, and after that, we cut down the budget on marketing since the bearish market started. We put more emphasis on product development at the moment and hope to deliver great products as soon as possible.\n\nAll hype will go ultimately, especially in the crypto world. What is the difference between DxBox and Dropbox or another solution?\n\nThe major difference between DxBox and Dropbox is the architecture, where DxBox implements blockchain technology and the others use the traditional centralized client-server model. \n\nUnlike the decentralized system, there are server administrators for the centralized system who have direct access to user data, leads a potential risk on the data breach. Moreover, files uploaded to a centralized system will be replicated and stored in different data centers. However, once the data center got hacked, all files will be exposed.\n\nThe decentralized storage network of DxChain provides a solution to solve the problems above.\n\n1) By using DxBox, storage provider only has encrypted file pieces, making it almost impossible to recover the original file, ensuring the data security and privacy.\n\n2) In addition, by using blockchain technology, the system is more flexible. The traditional client-server model requires large data centers built with special hardware and specialties to maintain the status. However, by adapting blockchain technology, each computer can be a storage provider which can be easily added and maintained.\n\n3) Last but not least is the problem we aim to solve. Traditional cloud storage service like Dropbox is a centralized service provider that makes profits by meeting clients’ needs. In DxChain economic model, the node could act as two roles: client and host. The client can earn DX tokens by sharing data, and the host can get profit by providing idle storage capacities. Thereby, the ultimate goal of DxChain is to build a more secure, reliable, and profitable decentralized ecosystem.\n\n\n## 2. What is the maximum possible file storage size?\n\nWe limited the upload file size to be less than 10MB at a time for testing purposes. However, the user is able to upload files as many times as they want. The entire file storage size is around 5TB so far and can be easily expanded by adding more hosts. Therefore, theoretically, the storage size is unlimited. \n\n\n## 3. Is the data shared by other people safe from viruses?\n\nThe sharing feature is not supported by DxBox yet, the file you download is what you’ve uploaded before. After implementing this feature, we will provide a third-party anti-virus software interface for users to decide whether to start the anti-virus plugin.\n\n\n## 4. Can you guarantee that my files will not be lost after 5 years or more?\n\nIn a word, yes. DxChain's design can technically ensure data security. Therefore, DxChain can provide unlimited file storage service with abundant economic incentives.\n\nThe file will be encrypted and divided into shards using erasure coding algorithm and stored to different storage providers based on certain parameters. According to the erasure coding algorithm, only a certain amount of data pieces are needed to recover the original file. The use of storage proof submitted by the host periodically and erasure coding algorithm immensely ensures the data privacy and security.\n\nFor instance, a file is sharded into 30 data pieces and stored to 30 storage providers based on the user’s parameter. How much will it cost to store a 10-gigabyte file?\n\nThe price totally depends on the supply and demand in the storage market and we do not have any control over it. Like buying apples from grocery stores, the sellers have strong bargain power when they have few competitors in the market. However, the sellers will decrease the price to draw customers if there are lots of competitors keeping a large stock of apples.\n\nThe theory applies to the storage market as well, there will be a great number of storage providers available when the decentralized storage network of DxChain breaks the data monopoly of technical giants. On this occasion, the storage providers will compete with each other by lowering down the price to draw more users’ attention.\n\n\n# [Part 2] Top 5 features what users want in the future:\n\n## 1. Hybrid payment system\n\nCurrently, users can only use DX Token as the currency for file storage, and we are not going to implement this feature in the near future. However, based on the users’ request, we may add a feature to convert different types of currency to DX Token more conveniently.\n\n\n## 2. Upload more than one file at a time\n\nThis feature is going to be added in the next release of DxBox. Currently, DxChain Testnet has already supported the batch uploading and you can check the file uploading status when multiple files are uploaded.\n\n\n## 3. Create and modify a folder / categorize different types of files\n\nWe are planning to build a file management system based on the storage service in the near future. While BT downloading depends on the seeds volunteers provided for free, **users can’t make the profit by sharing. In other words, DxChain has the capability to build robust data ecosystem**.\n\n2) DxChain storage is running on untrusted hosts, some nodes may break the protocol. JSON RPC Improvements\nThe system only supports HTTP RPC method in Testnet 1.0. For the Testnet 2.0, new RPC methods are implemented, which are:\n* WebSocket\n* Unix Socket IPC\n\n## 2.1. WebSocket\nBy adding WebSocket implementation, subscription feature is able to be implemented. The client can subscribe to an event, and the server will automatically send the results back to the client once the event is triggered. In the blockchain system, we can take the blockchain changes as an event and enable the node's subscription to these changes.\n\nFor instance, the change on the blockchain is an event that can be subscribed by the peers. In our previous implementation, it will be broadcast to all the peers when the change occurred, regardless if they need the information or not. By using the subscription system, the changes on the blockchain will only be sent to peers who subscribed this event, lowering down the network traffic and improve the data transmission speed.\n\n## 2.2. Unix Socket IPC\nBesides WebSocket, Unix Socket IPC implementation is added in this release as well to improve the efficiency on the interprocess communication since there is no need to establish a network connection on communication among processes on the same server.\n\n## 2.3. Protocol Buffer\nIn addition, research is also conducted to compare the performance of two data serialization mechanisms: JSON and Protocol Buffer, where the former one is used in our current RPC system. Our research shows that the protocol buffer is more efficient in data compression than JSON, meaning that the data transmission speed will be improved when there is a large amount of data transmitted through the network. Currently, we are considering switching the JSON RPC implementation to gRPC implementation based on the results. However, more tests need to be done to figure out the data size threshold that can cause a significantly different transmission speed between two mechanisms.\n\n# 3. P2P Network Feature Enhancement\nOur new P2P network model implemented the features introduced by static and trusted nodes, which enhanced the stability of the connection established between storage renter and host. The features are briefly introduced as follows:\n* static nodes: the connection will always be maintained, restrictions will not be applied to those nodes\n* trusted nodes: the restrictions will not be applied, but the connection is not always maintained\n\nIn addition, IP whitelist is another feature added to the P2P network. By using the command ipwhitelist introduced in the next section, the user can choose which IP address is allowed to establish the connection to the local node, gives user maximum privilege on improving system security by limiting and controlling access only to trusted nodes.\n\n# 4. Local Node Deployment\nFor the local node deployment, the tool will build the gdxc executable based on the program stored on the local machine, and upload it to the developer-defined remote servers (supports deployment on multiple servers). Once the uploading process finished successfully, a terminal multiplexer will be created where the gdxc program will be executed. The node will automatically connect to the bootstrap nodes pre-established by the DxChain Network and synchronize the blockchain. All the node configurations, such as bootstrap nodes and IP whitelist, will be read from the configuration file defined by the developer.\n\n## 5.2. Chain Explorer Deployment\nAfter the node is up and running, the chain explorer provides a convenient way to observe the node’s status. Once the Javascript code was sent to the interpreter, the code will be converted into Golang code and got executed. The result will be sent back after the execution.\n\nBy adding this feature, we can implement Javascript libraries in the future to support convenient DApp development. For any web developers, they can develop their own DApps without knowing much about how blockchain works.\n\n# 7. DB Performance Analyzing\nThere are two popular key-value databases in Golang, which are:\n* LevelDB\n* BoltDB\n\nLevelDB implemented the log-structured merge-tree, where the key-value pair will be stored sequentially in different files. Those files will be regularly checked and merged into a bigger file in order to optimize the reading performance. Based on our testing, when there is an increasing amount of keys, the reading performance will be affected negatively a lot, where the writing performance remains almost the same.\n\nBoltDB, on the other hand, is implemented based on the B+ tree, it fits better in read-heavy usage because it supports data reading concurrently (no locks). Unlike LevelDB, BoltDB only creates a single file that is used to store key-value pairs.\n\nCurrently, our system uses BoltDB as the database engine in Testnet 2.0, however, we will continuously perform tests to evaluate the performance of those two databases.
