A sports bra that doesn't suck for climbing? Am I about to throw away all of my Lululemon? HoldBreaker is the only climbing company run solely by women. They strive to create products that 'break' the mold of pink/lilac, ill-fitting, spandex. Enter the HoldBreaker X line of clothing designed specifically for women, by women. Before we get into the clothing, I'd like to point out the company's motto.
"Everyone’s struggle is the same, irrespective of level."
This slogan is one of my favorite parts about HoldBreaker. It applies to more than just climbing - it makes a strong statement that they aren't looking to promote the next V16 crusher. They are looking to make everyone feel at home while they're at the crag or gym.

HoldBreaker X Climbing Sports Bra
Let's face it, as women climbers, our upper bodies, shoulders/back muscles, start to develop. It might not be as much as the typical testosterone-induced male climber, but it's still significant. The typical sports bra is designed to fit a runner or yoga fanatic, where upper body hypertrophy is unlikely and most likely unwanted. But we all know that strong is sexy, and HoldBreaker wants to help us out!

The HoldBreakers X Climbing Sports Bra features dual thin shoulder straps to ensure comfort and support. This means they don't dig into your shoulders while you're reaching for that crimp. Traditional thick straps are only comfortable if the length is exactly right. This sports bra stayed in place during all of our testing (read struggling up southern slopey top outs). The lines are just right to provide a smooth look while allowing full range of motion. Right now they are only offered in black. This is great, but I really hope they come out with more colors. Any photographers will give you a hard time if you wear white, black, or grey to the crag. Bright colors can really make you "pop" against the rock. That being said, this black top lets me pull out my brighter colored leggings without the fear of clashing. I am a 32D and 5'8" and the medium fit perfectly.
HoldBreaker X Climbing Tank Top

I had my friend try out the climbing tank top, as when I tried to fit this over my hourglass shape, it stretched in all the wrong places. She is of a straighter, slender, more athletic build, and this top fit her perfectly. She loved the bra part of this top, and hopes they'll soon make it in a cropped style to hit just above the hip and not overlap with high waisted pants. She is a 32C and 5'5" and the medium fit perfectly.

Wrapping Things Up
Holdbreaker is trying to fill a niche in the market that has a lot of potienal. I personally am very excited to see what else they come up with. As for the earlier comment about throwing away my Lululemon bras, not quite yet, but these ones will go right into the rotation. | title | How to Build an In-Home Bouldering Wall |
| body | Rock climbing and bouldering is a new popular Trend among people of all ages looking for a different kind of exercise that isn't just class at the gym, jogging down the sidewalk, or catching on to the latest video craze. while there are other ways to get fit at home, rock climbing offers people a unique way to get a full-body workout while having fun, all while in the comfort of their own home. Interested in learning how to build an in-home bouldering wall of your own? Keep reading to learn more.

Image by Phillip Sanchez via Climbing

Designing your in-home bouldering wall
If you're not an expert on rock climbing or bouldering, you're going to want to visit as many climbing gyms and see as many home walls as you can before attempting to design your own wall. Consult people at climbing gyms, ask to take measurements, and really get a feel for the angles of the walls. Doing this kind of research will allow you to design and a dynamic, interesting, and practical in-home bouldering wall. You'll also want to assess the spaces in your home where you're thinking about building your bouldering wall. For example, if you’re looking to put it in your garage, you’ll need to make sure you leave enough room to park your car. Other things you should consider include:

Having the area you're considering inspected for stability

Ensuring the area has adequate lighting and ventilation

Weatherproofing your wall if you're putting it outside

Giving yourself enough room to comfortably fall without hitting anything

After deciding on the orientation and location of your climbing wall, sketch out or build a scale model so you have a better idea of what it'll look like. It'll give you a chance to build out more dimensions like curves and complex shapes. Your scale model should use equivalent dimensions and should include other design elements, including the height from the floor to the ceiling, the width of the anchoring structure, thickness of the wall studs, the thickness of the plywood sheathing, where lighting and ventilation systems are, and falling space. From there, you'll be able to make a materials list of what you need, including:

Drill

Jigsaw or handsaw

Measuring tape

Hammer

Allen wrench

Carpenter’s speed square

Frame materials (plywood panels, studs, wood screws)

Climbing holds

T-nuts and bolts

You can find much of these materials at a home improvement store or on online marketplaces like Craigslist, but for some materials, like climbing holds and T-nuts, you'll need to go to specialty stores or climbing gear outfitters.
Building your in-home bouldering wall
When building your bouldering wall, your best bet is to attach a wall to an existing wall or structure in order to eliminate the need for support braces and framing materials. Bouldering walls are heavy, and the existing wall you're attaching it to should be strong enough to support both the dead load and the climber, however much weight that will be. Calculating the amount of force and weight that your bouldering wall needs to account for is a difficult task, so consult someone who works in engineering, construction, or climbing. As a guideline, it’s suggested that wall panels steeper than 20 degrees have a vertical kicker panel at the bottom for your feet and that secondary wall panels be used to fill the gap between climbing walls.
Climbing your wall
Before you get to climbing, make sure to dispose of all debris from the building process, nails or screws lying around the area, and any clutter that can get in the way of the protection of your bouldering mat. After you've finished building and cleaning, it's time to climb! As with before you had your own wall at home, make sure you warm-up beforehand to avoid injury. Be sure to also perform regular inspections and maintenance on your wall and the surrounding area so you stay safe.

Image by king abid via HoMyGarden

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://every-last-rock.com/build-climbing-wall/

|

"body": "Rock climbing and bouldering is a new popular Trend among people of all ages looking for a different kind of exercise that isn't just class at the gym, jogging down the sidewalk, or catching on to the latest video craze. while there are other ways to get fit at home, rock climbing offers people a unique way to get a full-body workout while having fun, all while in the comfort of their own home. \r\n\r\nInterested in learning how to build an in-home bouldering wall of your own? Keep reading to learn more. \r\n

\r\n
Image by Phillip Sanchez via Climbing
\r\n
Designing your in-home bouldering wall
\r\nIf you're not an expert on rock climbing or bouldering, you're going to want to visit as many climbing gyms and see as many home walls as you can before attempting to design your own wall. Consult people at climbing gyms, ask to take measurements, and really get a feel for the angles of the walls. Doing this kind of research will allow you to design and a dynamic, interesting, and practical in-home bouldering wall.\r\n\r\nYou'll also want to assess the spaces in your home where you're thinking about building your bouldering wall. For example, if you’re looking to put it in your garage, you’ll need to make sure you leave enough room to park your car. Other things you should consider include: \r\n
\r\n
Having the area you're considering inspected for stability
\r\n
Ensuring the area has adequate lighting and ventilation
\r\n
Weatherproofing your wall if you're putting it outside
\r\n
Giving yourself enough room to comfortably fall without hitting anything
\r\n
\r\nAfter deciding on the orientation and location of your climbing wall, sketch out or build a scale model so you have a better idea of what it'll look like. It'll give you a chance to build out more dimensions like curves and complex shapes. Your scale model should use equivalent dimensions and should include other design elements, including the height from the floor to the ceiling, the width of the anchoring structure, thickness of the wall studs, the thickness of the plywood sheathing, where lighting and ventilation systems are, and falling space.\r\n\r\nFrom there, you'll be able to make a materials list of what you need, including:\r\n
\r\n
Drill
\r\n
Jigsaw or handsaw
\r\n
Measuring tape
\r\n
Hammer
\r\n
Allen wrench
\r\n
Carpenter’s speed square
\r\n
Frame materials (plywood panels, studs, wood screws)
\r\n
Climbing holds
\r\n
T-nuts and bolts
\r\n
\r\nYou can find much of these materials at a home improvement store or on online marketplaces like Craigslist, but for some materials, like climbing holds and T-nuts, you'll need to go to specialty stores or climbing gear outfitters. \r\n
Building your in-home bouldering wall
\r\nWhen building your bouldering wall, your best bet is to attach a wall to an existing wall or structure in order to eliminate the need for support braces and framing materials. Bouldering walls are heavy, and the existing wall you're attaching it to should be strong enough to support both the dead load and the climber, however much weight that will be. Calculating the amount of force and weight that your bouldering wall needs to account for is a difficult task, so consult someone who works in engineering, construction, or climbing.\r\n\r\nAs a guideline, it’s suggested that wall panels steeper than 20 degrees have a vertical kicker panel at the bottom for your feet and that secondary wall panels be used to fill the gap between climbing walls.\r\n
Climbing your wall
\r\nBefore you get to climbing, make sure to dispose of all debris from the building process, nails or screws lying around the area, and any clutter that can get in the way of the protection of your bouldering mat. | title | How to Layer for Intense Winter Conditions When Alpine and Ice Climbing |
| body |
For alpinists and ice climbers, lots of planning and preparation for a long, cold day on the mountain is standard procedure. The mountains are a harsh environment and are even harsher on those who enter under prepared. At high elevations, conditions can change drastically in just a few minutes, so dressing properly is an important part of a successful mission. Should you choose to brave the winter conditions, a long day of alpine or ice climbing can be an incredibly rewarding experience. However, ensuring that you are prepared for whatever conditions the mountains may throw at you is crucial to an enjoyable day of alpine or ice climbing.

Wicking Your Sweat: Base Layer
Prior to heading out, it is important to choose the proper base layers. A quick look at the expected weather conditions can help guide you, but it is always important to consider personal preference. A mild day full of sunshine calls for a lightweight layer, whereas a long day with expected wind and snow is much better suited to a mid or heavyweight option. In addition to different weights, base layers are constructed using a variety of fabrics, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Many high-performance base layers are made from a synthetic material, such as polypropylene. Synthetic base layers tend to have better wicking and sweat dissipation properties than other comparable materials. They also tend to be more durable and hold fewer odors. Another material that makes for a great, high performance base layer is merino wool. Like a synthetic base layer, clothing made from merino wool is made with performance in mind. Merino wool is very breathable and helps wick sweat away from your body, ensuring that you don’t overheat. While merino wool may not be quite as durable as a comparable synthetic layer, merino wool does have some naturally occurring anti-microbial properties which can help keep odors down even after multiple uses. The local Colorado company, VOORMI makes a great line of high performance merino wool base layers. Base layers can be one of the most important pieces of a functional layering set up. It can be difficult to dress for a day where you are sure to be exerting yourself while in a cold and intense climate. Should you overdress and start to sweat, a slight drop in the temperature can cause the sweat to freeze, causing major chills in just a few minutes. On the other hand, under dressing can lead to a long, cold and uncomfortable day on the mountain. Be sure to take into consideration how your body handles cold. This will help you choose between a light, mid or heavy weight layer.
Keeping You Warm: Mid Layer
Like choosing a base layer, picking out the proper mid layer can be a bit of a process. Depending on the weather, anyone heading out for alpine or ice climbing in intense conditions is left to choose from a number of different options. Made from a range of materials and designed to excel in different environments, mid layer options are nearly endless. Here are some tips on how to choose the one best suited for you. Fleece makes for a great mid layer. It is very warm, cozy and durable. Fleece doesn’t hold water very well, so even if you get wet, weather from perspiration or precipitation, fleece will continue to keep you warm. Unfortunately, because fleece does not absorb water, it can be difficult to clean. Most fleece layers will develop a sort of “funk” after a season or two of use. For a top of the line fleece jacket, the Arcteryx Delta LT Jacket is a great choice. Down is another option to consider when choosing a mid layer. Down is very warm, lightweight and packable. Most jackets on the market these days feature a built-in stuff sack so if the conditions rapidly change it is easy to stow a down jacket out of the way. The major downside to down as a mid layer is that it loses all insulating properties when it gets wet. While the primary function of a mid layer is to provide insulation, ensuring that your choice is up to whatever weather is

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://every-last-rock.com/layering-for-alpine-ice-climbing/

|

| body | Thank you so much for sharing this amazing post with us! Have you heard about Partiko? It’s a really convenient mobile app for Steem! With Partiko, you can easily see what’s going on in the Steem community, make posts and comments (no beneficiary cut forever!), and always stayed connected with your followers via push notification! Partiko also rewards you with Partiko Points (3000 Partiko Point bonus when you first use it!), and Partiko Points can be converted into Steem tokens. You can earn Partiko Points easily by making posts and comments using Partiko. We also noticed that your Steem Power is low. We will be very happy to delegate 15 Steem Power to you once you have made a post using Partiko! With more Steem Power, you can make more posts and comments, and earn more rewards! If that all sounds interesting, you can: - Download Partiko Android at [Google Play](http://bit.ly/2SRFIta) - Or Download Partiko iOS on the [App Store](https://apple.co/2PcXkSd) Thank you so much for reading this message! |

| body |
https://every-last-rock.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/KingCamp-e1544486615423.jpg

KingCamp Oasis 300. Is this sleeping bag ready to summit Everest? Not exactly.

Is this sleeping bag optimal for a 5 month through hike of the AT? Hardly.

The KingCamp Oasis 300 sleeping bag is a beginner-oriented bag that is perfect for the "average user." This sleeping bag is rated down to 26 F (-3 C) which will keep you comfortable in most Spring/Summer/Fall conditions.

Did we mention this thing can be had for under $30!

The Every Last Rock Team brought this bag out to the Red River Gorge this October to test it out. For the sub $50 price tag, it performed better than expected. That being said it did leave some things to be desired.

Build Quaility

The KingCamp Oasis 300's build quality is the less than what you will find on higher end brands, such as, North Face. When you consider the price difference this is to be expected.

The stuff sack that the bag comes in is less in quality than the actual bag, which is a good thing. The compression straps starting ripping out immediately after trying to tighten them.
Poor Stitching
The threads were not only ripping out, but they also seemed to be out of line. This may have been a manufacturing defect and caused the stitch to weaken.
Misaligned Stitch
The actual sleeping bag was a whole different story. The material used for the bag seemed to be of much higher quality and all the stitches were good.

Comfort

Being in the south for a long weekend, we didn't get a single dry day. This make for very uncomfortable nights in the sleeping bag.

The material used for the bag offered a bit of water resistance which made a ton of difference in getting a good night sleep. We didn't expect the KingCamp to perform so well in the sub optimal conditions, considering it was a super budget friendly bag.
Specs

The bag also dried out pretty quickly during the day. Temperatures got down to the lower 30's and it was very cozy. If it got below freezing, this bag would have not been comfortable at all.

Overall Thoughts

The KingCamp Oasis 300 is a great sleeping bag for anyone on a budget. If you don't expect to find yourself in extreme cold/snowy condititions you shouldn't have a problem with this sleeping bag.

This would work as a great first sleeping bag or possibly a backup bag. If you already have a higher end bag then this would be perfect to keep as a spare for a friend.

KingCamp makes this same model in different sizes. You can go all the way up to a double wide.

If you have any question or concerns about the KingCamp sleeping bag don't hesistate to leave a comment. We will be updating this post during the summer when we can use the bag more often.

In the meantime we will be trying to get our hands on some new gear for you guys to check out. | title | ClimbThrough: Trad Climbing Youtuber |
| body |
https://every-last-rock.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/ClimbThrough-e1536544896369.png

Hey guys what's up? My name is Kuba Lacina and I am addicted to rock climbing. I am also a Youtuber. I want to tell you all about that, but for you to understand the idea behind my channel, I will tell you a little backstory first. It all started in my home country, the Czech Republic. Yes, that's the place where people climb sandstone towers using knots as pro. That wasn't me. I started with sport climbing as most people do. I haven't discovered trad climbing until I moved to Manchester, UK.

At that time I didn't really know what to make of the whole trad climbing thing, so I spent A LOT of time top roping (what the hell, right!?) and bouldering. I was still convinced that sport climbing was the only style worth pursuing. Luckily, not having a car and the closest outdoor venues being bouldering and trad only, made me reconsider. After months of this, I bought my own rack and together with a couple of friends we started leading. Looking back, we hardly knew what we were doing and I still think that we only just got away with it a couple times. One of our first trad climbing trips was to Burbage North. It was raining in Manchester but as we entered the Sheffield side of the Peak District, the sun came out. Psyched for the weather, we got on some easier climbs and everything was going great. With my newly gained confidence & ignorance, I found myself tying in on the sharp end for Knight‘s Move HVS 5a. Flailing on the initial layback moves above the smallest nut I had on my rack, I quickly realized that I was either going to finish the climb or break my legs. Somehow I got to a break, placed a bomber cam and topped out. I have just climbed a piece of rock with nothing but my body, a couple pieces of modern gear and loads of luck. Sitting on the top, all sorts of thoughts were racing through my mind: I am alive! Trad is rad! Having graduated to a trad climber, I took the responsibility to educate myself very seriously. Every day I would spend a ridiculous amount of time watching trad climbing videos (I still do... :D), with people like James Pearson, Steph Davis, Hazel Findlay, Alex Honnold, and countless others. I admired them, looked up to them but I couldn't really relate to someone leading E9 if I was hardly leading VS. We've all seen the videos of professional climbers talking about their projects, right? "You grab these two tiny crimps, put your foot on the smallest little thing and dyno for a slopy gaston." All that while your only piece of gear is a micro cam five meters below you. Don't get me wrong, I love those videos, but how many of us have a need and motivation to climb routes like these? That made me think, what if I could inspire climbers that were just like me? Starting to lead trad but not really having someone they could relate to in terms of trad climbing difficulty. At that time, I was already putting up some climbing vlogs on Youtube, but I felt it wasn't going to be THE thing to inspire people to go after their ticklists that were seemingly out of reach. I needed videos that would teach beta in a fun and relatable way. That's how I came up with the concept of ClimbThroughs. A video that essentially walks you through the climb, gives you beta on the key moves, the gear placements and gives you an overall idea of what to expect from the route. I always show the route from both the first-person view and from the distance as needed, making it easier to find rests and gear placements from the ground. I like to call CTs the rock climbing version of what is known as WalkThroughs in the gaming world. In those videos, gamers play computer games, show their audience how to go through all the levels, get bonus items etc. The difference is that my version encourages people to engage in a physical activity and to go beyond their comfort zone, rather than having them stare into a computer screen. That is my ultimate goal, not only for people to have fun while watching my videos, but to get the most out of them by going out and climbing the routes I talk about themselves. Now that you know why I do the stuff I do, go check it out! In this episode dedicated to Every Last Rock, I climb an iconic route at Stanage, The Left Unconquerable E1 5b. This compelling line with 3 stars and 1890 logged ascents on the UKC has been on my ticklist for a while and marks my first E1 onsight. And when you are done with watching the video, don't be a stranger and let me know what you think! Then turn the computer off, grab your gear & a couple of good friends and head to the crag. See you there! | title | Indoorsy to Outdoorsy: 6 Ways to Encourage a More Active and Outdoor Lifestyle Within Yourself |
| body |
https://every-last-rock.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Get-Outside-e1534899540328.jpg

You’ve probably heard it before–living a more active, outdoorsy lifestyle improves your physical and mental health, overall making you a happier person. Studies show that being outdoors boosts our immune system. Doctors and hikers alike will agree that a walk around the block will help lessen depression and anxiety. The facts are there, but with indoor temptations such as binge-watching your new favorite TV show or working on the computer, it’s harder to make time (and find the energy) to get out of the house. Start with these simple tips to get you going.
1. Download a Hiking App
Yup, there’s an app for that! While it’s always nice to put your phone down while escaping into nature, sometimes it’s best for finding the inspiration to trek the outdoors. A hiking app can help you find the right trek that best suits your skill level. These apps are also helpful for joining communities and getting a better grasp on various park systems. Hiking apps are easy to use, helpful, and affordable so you can conquer any mountain (or path) you decide to trailblaze. Here are a few free apps to get you started:

AllTrails

The Outbound

REI Co-op Guide to National Parks

Exploring the outdoors is now as simple as downloading something to your phone and then hitting the trail.
2. Get the Right Equipment
Start with what you drive–you won’t get too far in a low clearance, front or rear-wheel drive car. If you’re serious about becoming more adventurous, swap out your vehicle for something that can sustain rugged terrain. A 4WD or AWD vehicle is the optimal choice for adventure seekers. Depending on the type of adventuring you’d like to do, simple accessories to your vehicle might do the trick. Start with a roof rack and acquire different accessories along the way, such as a kayak, mountain bike, paddleboard, snowboard, etc. A roof rack will at least give you the accommodation of trying different outdoor activities.
3. Spend More Time in Your Backyard
The easiest way to become more outdoor-minded is to spend more time with Mother Nature. Even if you live in the heart of the city, spending more time in your backyard can lead to becoming more adventurous. If you don’t have a backyard vibe that makes you want to spend more time outdoors, create one! Add a place for friends to gather around a fire and sling a hammock or two. If you're crafty and really want to get crazy, build an outdoor climbing wall.
4. Bike More
If possible, bike when you can. To and from work, to your next group hang, and even running small errands. Of course, avoiding public transportation and/or using your car isn’t always an option. However, part of enjoying the outdoors is respecting the environment. If you can adapt this mentality in your everyday life, you might discover a bigger appreciation for the outdoors. Don’t worry if you don’t own two wheels – choosing to walk can be just as influential.
5. Nature Photography
If you consider yourself a creative person, challenge your hand at nature photography. You’ll get all the benefits of working the left side of your brain as well as breathing in fresh air and soaking up the sunshine. Both of which naturally energize your mind and body. Plus, the more you get into the subject you’re shooting, whether it be scenic landscapes, detailed close-up shots, or simple pictures of your neighborhood, photographing the outdoors will help you stay active and encourages you to keep venturing where you haven’t been before.
6. Create an Outdoor Bucket List
Lists are a great way to conquer challenges and get things done. That’s why we make lists for even the most mundane tasks in our life (hello, grocery shopping). Make an outdoor bucket list of all of the places you want to see, regardless of the skill required. Writing down these destinations not only spur inspiration, they also build a sense of urgency and excitement within yourself. As you cross off places on the list, you’ll naturally begin to add more. Before you know it, you won’t be able to stay away from the outdoors!

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://every-last-rock.com/becoming-more-outdoorsy/

|

Getting holes in your pants, we've all been there! Climbing is a brutal activity. It requires you to hike through thick brush, scrape up against jagged rocks, and then do a hand-heel-match...

Quite simply your average pair of pants won't stand up to this abuse! So, what can you do to remedy this?

Wear shorts (bye-bye knee skin)

Pack multiple pants for each trip

Make all your pants one-time use

Quit climbing because it's too hard and no fun

While all the above-stated options may help, let's be real. Wouldn't it be amazing if you would find the perfect pair of pants for all your climbing (and general outdoors) active? Enter prAna.
