titleThe Truth About Addiction
bodyLoneliness kills. https://steemitimages.com/DQmXS1e6D7rngDUZmHH94UVCQbRPZS2ncFC6fWDN3hvH9os/image.png Human beings are social animals. Every day we do things to make ourselves feel good. In the morning we eat, do our ablutions, and some of us even exercise or have sex. All of these activities feel good, and if they didn’t feel good we wouldn’t do them. https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2013/10/16/22/42/head-196541_960_720.jpg “Man does not live by bread alone” is a quote from the bible, but it reveals a larger truth: humans need more than food to survive. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tragedy-leads-study-severe-child-neglect/ If we are isolated from positive social contact with a moderate to large group then we don’t get the stimulation we need and end up in crisis. Babies can’t defend themselves against a crisis, but teenagers and adults will seek out ways to simulate social contact. There are many things that can, to a limited extent, replace social contact, including: Television programs Facebook / social networks Video games Gambling Fremium Games Food Pornography Drugs (https://steemitimages.com/DQmQq8xzE788aXfNjkrZacUYnyVRuKcYxMB5ufUqJ5cgRCS/image.png) Some even hyperventilate about how social media and Internet companies are using the same tactics as casinos, threatening to turn everyone into Internet addicted zombies. https://www.samharris.org/podcast/item/persuasion-and-control Some addictions cause more problems than others. The most damaging addictions are: Sugar: obesity kills more than all other conditions. Tobacco Alcohol Other Drugs Gambling Compulsive spending Other Compulsive Behaviors Addiction and addicts have long been demonized as degenerates and irredeemable people. The reality is that addiction is a socially mediated condition. https://steemitimages.com/DQmUJpnjB3nFUto3Zf55gFgJ5RxaT8uUNPXFdXrtzrdauMC/image.png People who have access to friends and family who care for them and who have hope for the future are far more likely to recover and return to functionally healthy lives. 12 step programs only work for people who have a well developed support network. There are exceptions but they are extremely rare. http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2012/01/02/144431794/what-vietnam-taught-us-about-breaking-bad-habits https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1775687/ If you are socially isolated you are at risk. https://steemitimages.com/DQmYBNM9hMjKzseasirn1DJCKQprzkTx1gbWDZutdAsVVwF/image.png Your mind needs serotonin. What is our current ‘solution’ to drug addiction? We punish the addict, remove what little healthy social contact they have, and then we send them to jail and put them in a cage. When they get out we act surprised that they return to drug use (if they even stop in jail). Facebook, social media sites in general, and computer apps like email and other services have all looked to the casinos to learn the most effective ways to draw traffic. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/look-it-way/200903/the-addictive-personality A certain portion of the population is susceptible to influence. In the past, this has been about 5-10%. The social connection. People with a social network of friends and family are far more resilient to addiction than those bereft. Like Beethoven wrote in his 9th symphony, the ‘Ode to Joy’ people with friends are full of joy, and those without friends are isolated, miserable, and alone. People talk of Facebook addiction. If you don’t have impactful social relationships, the lure of Facebook can be irresistable. You dive in and get superficial recognition and notice, but there’s no depth. You’re like a popularity hound, always looking in the mirror and concerned with your outward appearance instead of what’s on the inside. You want to be ‘Popular’, like the song from the Broadway Musical ‘Wicked’. If you are not socially integrated you are at risk. Most people who are not socially integrated are not addicts, but they are perhaps only one opioid prescription away from becoming an addict. But more than this, they are at risk of losing all their money if they step into a casino, or spending too many hours of the day on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumbler, looking for the validation and acceptance they are missing but need in order to feel healthy. Solutions that work: At present, we are attacking addiction by regulating addictive substances. The ways we regulate include: Taxes on products like tobacco and alcohol Restrictions on gambling to certain cities or states Restrictions on advertising Completely banning hard drugs, and imprisoning people who use them. The philosophy is that addictive substances are bad, and decreasing access will stop people from using. This philosophy is fundamentally flawed. People who are at risk will do anything to feel better. Restrictions and laws are barely even noticed. Human dignity is not an option. It is a necessity for life. https://steemitimages.com/DQmddwjk1bb9ScNr5Chf6RVVgSxxCHKfZhgtGTgsCmZC8Px/image.png It’s not the substances that are bad. As humans we want to blame objects instead of people. That’s supposed to be compassionate. The problem here is with people, and while the addicts share some of the blame, society should address the problem through inclusion and support instead of punishment and isolation. In 2001, Portugal decriminalized drug use. Addicts were sent to counseling instead of jail. Instead of a criminal record that kept them from getting a job and destroyed their social connections, they were integrated deeper into society. They results have been paradigm shattering: Drug consumption has fallen by more than 50% Overdose deaths have fallen more than 70% Drug related crime is down more than 80% New HIV cases have crashed https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/06/05/why-hardly-anyone-dies-from-a-drug-overdose-in-portugal/ Portugal has saved thousands of lives and billions of dollars by addressing the real problem. The rest of the West is catching up, and the rest of the world will follow soon after. The sooner we arrive at this solution the better. Addiction is not fixed through punishment. Addiction is fixed through compassion, inclusion, and love. These solutions must be intelligently applied. Sometimes the love needs to be tough. There will always be people who make serious mistakes. It’s part of being human. These solutions will not end human tragedy, but right now, instead of fighting the tragedies we are making things worse. There’s no such thing as an addict. Only the lonely, crying out for compassion. https://steemitimages.com/DQmTvw4CcGnxEBtR1xnT32ocdh3YhgB6fRYjPYYZsTei78f/image.png

We punish the addict, remove what little healthy social contact they have, and then we send them to jail and put them in a cage. \n\nWhen they get out we act surprised that they return to drug use (if they even stop in jail). \n\nFacebook, social media sites in general, and computer apps like email and other services have all looked to the casinos to learn the most effective ways to draw traffic. \n\nhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/look-it-way/200903/the-addictive-personality\n\nA certain portion of the population is susceptible to influence. In the past, this has been about 5-10%. \n\nThe social connection. \n\nPeople with a social network of friends and family are far more resilient to addiction than those bereft. Like Beethoven wrote in his 9th symphony, the ‘Ode to Joy’ people with friends are full of joy, and those without friends are isolated, miserable, and alone. \n\nPeople talk of Facebook addiction. \n\nIf you are not socially integrated you are at risk. Most people who are not socially integrated are not addicts, but they are perhaps only one opioid prescription away from becoming an addict. \n\nBut more than this, they are at risk of losing all their money if they step into a casino, or spending too many hours of the day on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumbler, looking for the validation and acceptance they are missing but need in order to feel healthy. \n\nSolutions that work: \n\nAt present, we are attacking addiction by regulating addictive substances. The ways we regulate include:\nTaxes on products like tobacco and alcohol \nRestrictions on gambling to certain cities or states\nRestrictions on advertising \nCompletely banning hard drugs, and imprisoning people who use them. \n\nThe philosophy is that addictive substances are bad, and decreasing access will stop people from using. \n\nThis philosophy is fundamentally flawed. \n\nPeople who are at risk will do anything to feel better. Restrictions and laws are barely even noticed. \n\nHuman dignity is not an option. It is a necessity for life. https://steemitimages.com/DQmddwjk1bb9ScNr5Chf6RVVgSxxCHKfZhgtGTgsCmZC8Px/image.png\n\nIt’s not the substances that are bad. As humans we want to blame objects instead of people. That’s supposed to be compassionate. The problem here is with people, and while the addicts share some of the blame, society should address the problem through inclusion and support instead of punishment and isolation. \n\nIn 2001, Portugal decriminalized drug use. Addicts were sent to counseling instead of jail. Instead of a criminal record that kept them from getting a job and destroyed their social connections, they were integrated deeper into society. \n\nThey results have been paradigm shattering: \nDrug consumption has fallen by more than 50%\nOverdose deaths have fallen more than 70%\nDrug related crime is down more than 80%\nNew HIV cases have crashed\n\nhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/06/05/why-hardly-anyone-dies-from-a-drug-overdose-in-portugal/\n\nPortugal has saved thousands of lives and billions of dollars by addressing the real problem. \n\nThe rest of the West is catching up, and the rest of the world will follow soon after. \n\nThe sooner we arrive at this solution the better. Addiction is not fixed through punishment. Addiction is fixed through compassion, inclusion, and love. These solutions must be intelligently applied. Sometimes the love needs to be tough. \n\nThere will always be people who make serious mistakes. It’s part of being human. These solutions will not end human tragedy, but right now, instead of fighting the tragedies we are making things worse. \n\nThere’s no such thing as an addict. Only the lonely, crying out for compassion. \n\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmTvw4CcGnxEBtR1xnT32ocdh3YhgB6fRYjPYYZsTei78f/image.png",

titleThe Truth About Addiction
bodyLoneliness kills https://steemitimages.com/DQmXS1e6D7rngDUZmHH94UVCQbRPZS2ncFC6fWDN3hvH9os/image.png Human beings are social animals. There are many things that can, to a limited extent, replace social contact, including: Television programs Facebook / social networks Video games Gambling Fremium Games Food Pornography Drugs (https://steemitimages.com/DQmQq8xzE788aXfNjkrZacUYnyVRuKcYxMB5ufUqJ5cgRCS/image.png) Some even hyperventilate about how social media and Internet companies are using the same tactics as casinos, threatening to turn everyone into Internet addicted zombies https://www.samharris.org/podcast/item/persuasion-and-control Some addictions cause more problems than others. Facebook, social media sites in general, and computer apps like email and other services have all looked to the casinos to learn the most effective ways to draw traffic https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/look-it-way/200903/the-addictive-personality A certain portion of the population is susceptible to influence.

"body": "Loneliness kills \nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmXS1e6D7rngDUZmHH94UVCQbRPZS2ncFC6fWDN3hvH9os/image.png\n\nHuman beings are social animals. \n\nEvery day we do things to make ourselves feel good. In the morning we eat, do our ablutions, and some of us even exercise or have sex.\n\nAll of these activities feel good, and if they didn’t feel good we wouldn’t do them. \n\nhttps://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2013/10/16/22/42/head-196541_960_720.jpg\n\n“Man does not live by bread alone” is a quote from the bible, but it reveals a larger truth: humans need more than food to survive. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/tragedy-leads-study-severe-child-neglect/\n\n\nIf we are isolated from positive social contact with a moderate to large group then we don’t get the stimulation we need and end up in crisis. Babies can’t defend themselves against a crisis, but teenagers and adults will seek out ways to simulate social contact. There are many things that can, to a limited extent, replace social contact, including: \nTelevision programs \nFacebook / social networks\nVideo games \nGambling\nFremium Games\nFood \nPornography \nDrugs \n\n (https://steemitimages.com/DQmQq8xzE788aXfNjkrZacUYnyVRuKcYxMB5ufUqJ5cgRCS/image.png)\n\nSome even hyperventilate about how social media and Internet companies are using the same tactics as casinos, threatening to turn everyone into Internet addicted zombies https://www.samharris.org/podcast/item/persuasion-and-control\n\nSome addictions cause more problems than others. The most damaging addictions are:\nSugar: obesity kills more than all other conditions. \nTobacco \nAlcohol \nOther Drugs \nGambling \nCompulsive spending \nOther Compulsive Behaviors\n\nAddiction and addicts have long been demonized as degenerates and irredeemable people. The reality is that addiction is a socially mediated condition. https://steemitimages.com/DQmUJpnjB3nFUto3Zf55gFgJ5RxaT8uUNPXFdXrtzrdauMC/image.png\n\nPeople who have access to friends and family who care for them and who have hope for the future are far more likely to recover and return to functionally healthy lives. \n\n12 step programs only work for people who have a well developed support network. There are exceptions but they are extremely rare. \n\nhttp://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2012/01/02/144431794/what-vietnam-taught-us-about-breaking-bad-habits\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1775687/\n\nIf you are socially isolated you are at risk. \nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmYBNM9hMjKzseasirn1DJCKQprzkTx1gbWDZutdAsVVwF/image.png\nYour mind needs serotonin. What is our current ‘solution’ to drug addiction? We punish the addict, remove what little healthy social contact they have, and then we send them to jail and put them in a cage. \n\nWhen they get out we act surprised that they return to drug use (if they even stop in jail). \n\nFacebook, social media sites in general, and computer apps like email and other services have all looked to the casinos to learn the most effective ways to draw traffic \n\nhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/look-it-way/200903/the-addictive-personality\n\nA certain portion of the population is susceptible to influence. \n\nhttps://steemitimages.com/DQmTvw4CcGnxEBtR1xnT32ocdh3YhgB6fRYjPYYZsTei78f/image.png",

titleMeditation For Scientists and Engineers
body![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaozYFzMWB7PhyVBU92cDJeUEHJLuZxoNTetGq8kzA9Xv/image.png) Over the years, I've been introduced to meditation and relaxation techniques as a way to help me accomplish specific goals. Every time I've tried to dig deeper, I would run into books on religion or spirituality that would make claims without any evidence other than personal experiences. In many cases, the lack of evidence is emphasized as part of the process! While this method may work for some people, for me it is deeply frustrating. As a result, I've compiled a lot of information that is backed up by either peer reviewed research, or years of meticulous and well documented study. There are many benefits to meditation. Both the mind and the body can benefit, and a benefit for one usually ends up helping the other. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSj2VZKjxGF2mkq7B2jVFvXiM4KWnbz2eyiacm7k7vd89/image.png) The biggest impact that one gets from meditation comes from measured breathing. This may sound really simple but it's a lot harder than you think. Web apps like http://xhalr.com/ can help you maintain regular breathing for the duration of your meditation (or meditation-like) exercise. Give it a try for five minutes and see how easily it comes to you. Measured breathing can improve your Heart Rate Variability, or HRV. Scientists have discovered many links between HRV and overall health. A National Institute of Health report shows that improved HRV decreases anxiety and sleep disturbances in patients recovering from strokes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4725573/ Athletes also use HRV as a tool to measure the effectiveness of their training regimen. https://hrvcourse.com/hrv-demographics-fitness-level/ Muscle tension is also notably improved by meditation. Throughout the course of the day, tension builds up in our bodies as a result of regular activities and stressors. Dramatic and immediate results can be realized by taking a few minutes to consciously examine your body to find excess tightness. For example, most of the people reading this article are clenching their jaw. When walking or engaged in physical activity, clenching the jaw protects it from harm. But when you sit down, it's just unnecessary tension. Take a moment and unclench your teeth. Wiggle your jaw back and forth a few times to ensure it's loose and comfortable. Now return to reading, but pay attention to the tension in your head and neck. If you were clenching your jaw then your head and neck should relax. HRV and muscle tension are the two most pronounced positive effects that come from meditation. They are not dependent on the style or school of meditation, and appear to be primarily influenced by the concentration on regular, controlled breathing, and the conscious review of tension. What this means is that you can choose from any of the large variety of meditation techniques, and the one you like the most will probably work best for you. It would be wise, however, to try several different styles. Exploration of new territory can sometimes bring pleasant surprises. But wait, there's more! While HRV and muscle tension are big, there are still more benefits from meditation, although they are more complicated and harder to study. Meditation can induce the production of cortical theta waves in the brain. These emissions are also seen in hypnotic trances and in young children, leading researchers to believe that meditation can improve the cognitive function of students and patients in therapy for PTSD or other mental health related conditions. In future posts I will discuss the connections between meditation and deprogramming your mind of unhelpful or pathological traits.
