Santiago Mariño Carige, quien, nació el 25 de Julio de 1788 en el Valle del Espíritu Santo, Margarita, Estado Nueva Esparta, el mismo, formando parte de una familia y posición social distinguida, económicamente estuvo bien soportado, teniendo un gran número de bienes registrados bajo su patrimonio; sus padres fueron, el Teniente de Justicia Mayor del Golfo de Paria, Santiago Mariño de Acuña, natural de Galicia del Reino de España y la criolla, Doña Anastasia Carige Fitzgerald de Coolmen, hija del caballero Gerald Carige, natural de Irlanda, del Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña, quien emigró de tal locación debido a las persecuciones religiosas.</div>\n\n\n\n![baner ejpc2010.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZSN4Q6o3SsGYRGSGgRKL79Gvd37KNtYb3sHZ8F93CqnG/baner%20ejpc2010.PNG)\n\n<div class=text-justify>Aún niño, Santiago Mariño, en el año 1796, fue trasladado junto a su familia a la isla de Trinidad donde fijaron residencia, presenciando los hechos mediante los cuales la isla de Trinidad pasa al poder definitivo de los ingleses. En el año 1800, entró al colegio especial, que su abuelo formó en Trinidad, donde se educó juntó a otros jóvenes emigrados de Irlanda por las mismas causas que su suegro, recibiendo en esta, instrucción por profesores todos ingleses, a excepción del profesor de gramática castellana quien era español. De igual forma, en el año 1811, fue designado por la Junta Provisional del Ayuntamiento de Cumaná para ir a la isla de Trinidad, y presentarse ante el gobernador británico de la isla en el desempeño de una comisión como “Oficial portador de una nueva nota de representaciones al gobernador, a quien se llamaba al respeto de la neutralidad”, obteniendo buenos resultados en la misma. Aragua, el 31 de Marzo de 1814 y con la victoria en la Primera Batalla de Carabobo, el 28 de mayo de 1814, ante Juan Manuel Cajigal, tras haber unido fuerzas en el centro del país con el Libertador, Simón Bolívar; también se hizo presente con su participación como General en Jefe del Ejército, en la expedición de Los Cayos, comandada por Simón Bolívar, arribando a la isla de Margarita los primeros días de Mayo de 1816, donde luego de su llegada, el día 6 de mayo fue proclamado por una asamblea en la Villa del Norte hoy en día Santa Ana del Norte como segundo del Ejército Libertador. En 1817 Mariño impone sitio a Cumaná como paso previo para la liberación de Oriente que, según su idea, debía preceder a la de Caracas, ese mismo año, el 08 de Mayo de 1817 participó en el Congreso de Cariaco. A demás, el mismo representó como diputado a la provincia de Cumaná en el segundo Congreso de Venezuela, reunido en Angostura el 15 de febrero de 1819. Ese mismo año, el 12 de junio, triunfó sobre el Coronel Eugenio Arana en el combate de Cantaura; y mientras Bolívar operaba en la Nueva Granada tomó parte en el movimiento que desplazó a Francisco Antonio Zea de la vicepresidencia de la República, quedando Mariño como Comandante en Jefe del Ejército de Oriente. Una vez que Bolívar llegó a la ciudad de Angostura, Mariño fue destacado en el Estado Mayor. Posteriormente, el 30 de mayo de 1821 fue nombrado Jefe del Estado Mayor General del Ejército Libertador, y con ese cargo combatió en la Batalla de Carabobo, el 24 de junio de 1824; ese mismo año, fue designado en Caracas Presidente del Consejo de Guerra de Oficiales Generales que debía juzgar la conducta del General de Brigada Lino Clemente en la pérdida de Maracaibo en 1823. En 1826 el Congreso de Colombia lo designó con el importante cargo de Ministro Juez de la Alta Corte, función que no pudo ejercer al estallar en Venezuela en abril de ese año el movimiento de La Cosiata, en el que fue uno de los principales dirigentes junto a José Antonio Páez. En 1827 se desempeñó como intendente y Comandante General del Departamento de Maturín. A finales de 1829 y comienzos de 1830, Mariño fue uno de los artífices del movimiento, que condujeron a la restauración de la República de Venezuela.</div>\n\n![baner ejpc2010.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZSN4Q6o3SsGYRGSGgRKL79Gvd37KNtYb3sHZ8F93CqnG/baner%20ejpc2010.PNG)\n\n<div class=text-justify>En 1834, Santiago Mariño se presentó como candidato a la Presidencia de la República, pero los escrutinios favorecieron a José María Vargas en febrero del año siguiente. Tras su fracaso en los comicios electorales de 1835, Mariño acaudilló en julio de ese mismo año la llamada Revolución de las Reformas, hecho por el cual fue expulsado del país, por lo que comenzó un largo trajinar que lo llevó a Curazao, Jamaica, Haití y finalmente a la Nueva Granada. En 1848 regresó a Venezuela, siendo nombrado casi de inmediato Comandante General del Ejército organizado por el Presidente de la República José Tadeo Monagas, para hacer frente al levantamiento en armas del General Páez, a raíz de los acontecimientos del 24 de enero de 1848, que derivaron en el asalto al Congreso por parte de Monagas. Años después en 1853, fue reducido a prisión por su participación en la llamada Revolución de Mayo, la cual estalló la noche del 24 al 25 de mayo de dicho año, pero fue libertado tiempo después.</div>\n\n\n![baner ejpc2010.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZSN4Q6o3SsGYRGSGgRKL79Gvd37KNtYb3sHZ8F93CqnG/baner%20ejpc2010.PNG)\n\n<div class=text-justify>Mariño logró en el Ejército el más alto grado que se confiere a un soldado, como muestra del arrojo, perseverancia y al valor, para después convertirse en \"el guardián de la independencia\", buscando a toda costa defender los intereses de la patria, de igual forma lo hizo en su carrera masónica, alcanzando los 33 grados, que ofrece la orden, demostrándonos de esta manera su dedicación a la noble causa de promover el progreso del género humano, donde ocupó cargos de gran importancia dentro de la misma, logrando convertirse en Serenísimo Gran Maestro del Gran Oriente del Venezuela. Victoria, Nº 38 hoy en día Victoria Nº 9.  El 07 de Abril de 1854, Mariño recibe, del Gran Oriente de Venezuela, la Carta Patente para su fundación, de este noble taller que hasta la fecha ha funcionado con pocas interrupciones. Santiago Mariño, muere el 4 de Septiembre de 1854 y en reconocimiento a lo que cosechó en vida, se organizaron exequias en su nombre, el 20 de Noviembre de 1854, donde participó como orador de orden Antonio Guzmán Blanco.</div>\n\n\n![baner ejpc2010.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZSN4Q6o3SsGYRGSGgRKL79Gvd37KNtYb3sHZ8F93CqnG/baner%20ejpc2010.PNG)\n\n<div class=text-justify>Sin embargo, muchos de los acontecimientos ocurridos a lo largo de la vida militar y política de Santiago Mariño, han tratado de ser desviados y limitados en su acción y gloria, hecho el cual llevó a Caracciolo Parra-Pérez a escribir que “Ninguno de los próceres de la Independencia, excepto quizás Miranda, ha sido tan maltratado y desfigurado históricamente como Mariño”; esto quizás por el hecho de no haber conservado correspondencias ni notas personales o mucho menos haber formado archivo, lo cual trajo como consecuencia que muchas de las inferencias en pro o contra que se hicieron sobre su conducta provengan de las correspondencias que le enviaron los que conservaron sus documentos, de noticias aparecidas en la prensa, de opiniones de amigos o enemigos, de proclamas y documentos oficiales relativos al desempeño de sus misiones, e inclusive, de chismes e invenciones de mala fé. Apenas tres veces publicó un folleto para defender su conducta, lo cual nos permite apreciar, que como buen masón demostró un alto nivel de tolerancia en contra de sus detractores.</div>\n\n![baner ejpc2010.PNG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZSN4Q6o3SsGYRGSGgRKL79Gvd37KNtYb3sHZ8F93CqnG/baner%20ejpc2010.PNG)\n\n<div class=text-justify>Puedo inferir que el Ilustre y Poderoso hermano G/J. Santiago Mariño Carige, le correspondió vivir en una época idónea, para que un joven como él, con ímpetu y espíritu de lucha, pudiera aportar a su entorno, por lo que aferró su vida a las bases como ciudadano, político y militar; el mismo, fue un ferviente amante de Venezuela, por lo que en ningún momento dio descanso a su brazo en la búsqueda de la libertad de la misma; y a pesar de haber presentado ciertas rivales con quienes formaron parte de la constelación de hombres, que junto a él lucharon por la gesta libertaria e independentista de Venezuela, en las diversas etapas de su vida, debido a sus diferencias ideológicas, de pensamiento y planificación, el trato fraternal nunca se ausentó entre los mismo, demostrando con esto un alto nivel de trabajo interno.
