| author | eldergill |
| body |

Seneca stated that: >We should not, like sheep, follow the herd of creatures in front of us, making our way where others go, not where we ought to go This is a lifestyle choice, and a difficult one indeed. Consciously deciding to follow one's own destiny and purpose leads you to rebel against the status quo. This is met with difficulty and hardships in the process, it is not easy to be different, it is not easy to follow your passions in a hyper-social and judgemental society. It takes immense courage and self-discipline to follow through with this and to consistently avoid following the herd because life is much easier when we just fit in with the normality of everyday life. Go to school, follow the trends, fit in, go to parties, try your best to please everyone, go to university, get a career with a high paying job which most likely is not your passion. I am only 22 but I believe that the regret that most people experience when they meet their life's end is that they didn't follow their personal dreams and their purpose in life. It is very important to still be active within society (unless your purpose is to self sustain in the wild, completely away from society), but it is vital that you stay aware that you are not following the herd, people-pleasing, and therefore, not taking care of yourself properly. It takes courage, people will complain about you, they will try to bring you down but stay in a state of [Prosoche](https://stoiccompass.wordpress.com/fieldwork/prosoche-minsfuldness/), stay true to yourself and be brave enough to be the shepherd, and not the sheep. Have a great week!
**Adam x**

Who is Seneca?

.JPG)
Seneca, born in southern Spain over 2,000 years ago in 4 BC and educated in Rome was a high-ranking financial clerk who pursued a career in politics. He worked with Emperor Nero as his tutor and advisor for many years which is where he was subsequently killed by order of Nero himself due to suspicion of Seneca being treacherous. He died in 65 AD. He was interested in many different types of philosophies but sold himself on the idea and concept of Stoicism primarily coined by Zeno in theory. Read by important figures in society such as Nassim Nicholas Taleb and Tim Ferris, the writings of Seneca compiled into the books that express his ideas are still very influential even today. |

"body": "

\n\nSeneca stated that:\n>We should not, like sheep, follow the herd of creatures in front of us, making our way where others go, not where we ought to go\n\nThis is a lifestyle choice, and a difficult one indeed. Consciously deciding to follow one's own destiny and purpose leads you to rebel against the status quo. This is met with difficulty and hardships in the process, it is not easy to be different, it is not easy to follow your passions in a hyper-social and judgemental society.\n\nIt takes immense courage and self-discipline to follow through with this and to consistently avoid following the herd because life is much easier when we just fit in with the normality of everyday life. \n\nGo to school, follow the trends, fit in, go to parties, try your best to please everyone, go to university, get a career with a high paying job which most likely is not your passion.\n\nI am only 22 but I believe that the regret that most people experience when they meet their life's end is that they didn't follow their personal dreams and their purpose in life. It is very important to still be active within society (unless your purpose is to self sustain in the wild, completely away from society), but it is vital that you stay aware that you are not following the herd, people-pleasing, and therefore, not taking care of yourself properly.\n\nIt takes courage, people will complain about you, they will try to bring you down but stay in a state of [Prosoche](https://stoiccompass.wordpress.com/fieldwork/prosoche-minsfuldness/), stay true to yourself and be brave enough to be the shepherd, and not the sheep. \n\nHave a great week!\n\n
**Adam x**
\n\n
Who is Seneca?
\n\n
.JPG)
\n\nSeneca, born in southern Spain over 2,000 years ago in 4 BC and educated in Rome was a high-ranking financial clerk who pursued a career in politics. | body |

About the Author
Tren Griffin works at Microsoft. He graduated from Boston College. Tren was previously a Partner at Eagle River, a private equity firm. His Twitter is looked to as that of a "tech/business guru" (he quotes Warren Buffett a lot..) Tren started beef with Martin Shkreli on Twitter just before the FBI arrested Shkreli.

A little bit about the book
**Charles Thomas Munger** Seeing as the book is about **Charlie Munger**, I will describe who he is in short: Charles Thomas Munger is a businessperson who has been at the helm of 6 different companies. He is 94 years old and occupies the position of Chairman of Daily Journal Corp. and Chairman for Blue Chip Stamps. He is also on the board of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (working alongside friend and admirer Warren Buffett), Costco Wholesale Corp. and Berkshire Hathaway Assurance Corp. and Chairman of Good Samaritan Hospital (Los Angeles). Warren Buffett credits much of his investing success to Charlie Munger because he convinced him to differentiate his investing from traditional Benjamin Graham style to a more conscientious style in which they look at the specifics of the company and only invest in really, really great companies who are trading at a depreciated price. In the past Mr. Munger was Real Estate Attorney at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer for Capital Cities, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Capital Cities, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer at Wesco Financial Corp. and Vice Chairman at Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (Investment Management). He received an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a graduate degree from Harvard Law School. **The Book** Charlie Munger, the complete investor is a book that details the legendary investor and arguably the modern renaissance man's advice for new and old investors. It runs through his principles for investing and how he relates them to his everyday life. It is a really easy read, reiterating that to do the type of investing that Munger and Buffett do, you don't need to have all the technical knowledge about trading, all you need is self-discipline, patience and a passion for reading about the world and different companies.

Furthermore, there is a portion of the book which speaks about who Charlie is, where he has come from and what his relationships are like with those around him. But the most important part of the book that I read was that they speak about as the complete investor but this is not specifically about financial investing - it is also investing in life, in family, in relationships, in your health and in everything that makes up life for you. The elementary wisdom notion in the book relates to my claim that Charlie Munger is the modern renaissance man - it describes that we should all have a set of interdisciplinary mental models involving business, psychology, politics, ethics, management and economics. Having a good understanding of all of these areas allows him to keep his emotions out of his investments and avoid making mistakes or poor judgement calls in life.

I have found that by forming mental models in a similar way that Charlie Munger does, it allows you to enjoy your life, not to take things to seriously and to realise your goals and aspirations. Great book, I will continue to read and re-read it for the rest of my life.
Prosoché, Prokopé & Phila

**Adam x**
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bookclub
[Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-1-ego-is-the-enemy-ryan-holiday) [The Wisdom Of Insecurity, Alan Watts](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-2-the-wisdom-of-insecurity-alan-watts) [Tools of Titans, Tim Ferris](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-tools-of-titans-tim-ferris) [Homo-Deus, Yuval Noah Harari](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-homo-deus-yuval-noah-harari) [Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-5-radical-acceptance-tara-brach) [Born a crime, Trevor Noah](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-born-a-crime-trevor-noah) [How brands grow, Byron Sharp](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-how-brands-grow-byron-sharp) [Tales of modern Russia, Peter Pomerantsev](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-8-tales-of-modern-russia) [Stone Soup, Marcia Brown](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-9-stone-soup) [How to get filthy rich in rising Asia, Mohsin Hamid](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-10-how-to-get-filthy-rich-in-rising-asia) [The Art of War, Sun Tzu](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-11-the-art-of-war-sun-tzu) [Why Bob Dylan Matters, Richard F. "body": "

\n
About the Author
\n\nTren Griffin works at Microsoft. He graduated from Boston College.\nTren was previously a Partner at Eagle River, a private equity firm. His Twitter is looked to as that of a \"tech/business guru\" (he quotes Warren Buffett a lot..)\nTren started beef with Martin Shkreli on Twitter just before the FBI arrested Shkreli. \n\n

\n\n
A little bit about the book
\n\n**Charles Thomas Munger**\n\nSeeing as the book is about **Charlie Munger**, I will describe who he is in short:\nCharles Thomas Munger is a businessperson who has been at the helm of 6 different companies. He is 94 years old and occupies the position of Chairman of Daily Journal Corp. and Chairman for Blue Chip Stamps.\n\nHe is also on the board of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (working alongside friend and admirer Warren Buffett), Costco Wholesale Corp. and Berkshire Hathaway Assurance Corp. and Chairman of Good Samaritan Hospital (Los Angeles). \n\nWarren Buffett credits much of his investing success to Charlie Munger because he convinced him to differentiate his investing from traditional Benjamin Graham style to a more conscientious style in which they look at the specifics of the company and only invest in really, really great companies who are trading at a depreciated price.\n\nIn the past Mr. Munger was Real Estate Attorney at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer for Capital Cities, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Capital Cities, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer at Wesco Financial Corp. and Vice Chairman at Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. (Investment Management). \n\nHe received an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a graduate degree from Harvard Law School.\n\n**The Book**\n\nCharlie Munger, the complete investor is a book that details the legendary investor and arguably the modern renaissance man's advice for new and old investors. \n\n

\n\nFurthermore, there is a portion of the book which speaks about who Charlie is, where he has come from and what his relationships are like with those around him. But the most important part of the book that I read was that they speak about as the complete investor but this is not specifically about financial investing - it is also investing in life, in family, in relationships, in your health and in everything that makes up life for you. \n\nThe elementary wisdom notion in the book relates to my claim that Charlie Munger is the modern renaissance man - it describes that we should all have a set of interdisciplinary mental models involving business, psychology, politics, ethics, management and economics. Having a good understanding of all of these areas allows him to keep his emotions out of his investments and avoid making mistakes or poor judgement calls in life. \n\n

\n\nI have found that by forming mental models in a similar way that Charlie Munger does, it allows you to enjoy your life, not to take things to seriously and to realise your goals and aspirations. \n\nGreat book, I will continue to read and re-read it for the rest of my life. \n\n
Prosoché, Prokopé & Phila
\n\n
**Adam x**
\n\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n
The Bookclub
\n\n[Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-1-ego-is-the-enemy-ryan-holiday)\n[The Wisdom Of Insecurity, Alan Watts](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-2-the-wisdom-of-insecurity-alan-watts)\n[Tools of Titans, Tim Ferris](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-tools-of-titans-tim-ferris)\n[Homo-Deus, Yuval Noah Harari](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-homo-deus-yuval-noah-harari)\n[Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-5-radical-acceptance-tara-brach)\n[Born a crime, Trevor Noah](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-born-a-crime-trevor-noah)\n[How brands grow, Byron Sharp](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-how-brands-grow-byron-sharp)\n[Tales of modern Russia, Peter Pomerantsev](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-8-tales-of-modern-russia)\n[Stone Soup, Marcia Brown](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-9-stone-soup)\n[How to get filthy rich in rising Asia, Mohsin Hamid](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-10-how-to-get-filthy-rich-in-rising-asia)\n[The Art of War, Sun Tzu](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-11-the-art-of-war-sun-tzu)\n[Why Bob Dylan Matters, Richard F. Consciously deciding to follow one's own destiny and purpose leads you to rebel against the status quo. This is met with difficulty and hardships in the process, it is not easy to be different, it is not easy to follow your passions in a hyper-social and judgemental society. It takes immense courage and self-discipline to follow through with this and to consistently avoid following the herd because life is much easier when we just fit in with the normality of everyday life. | body |

About the Author
Hermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany. His parents, Johannes and Marie, were of varied European ancestry and had done missionary work in India. Hesse was also expected to pursue a religious career, and at his parents urging he attended the theological seminary in Maulbronn. But as Hesse would later remark, he did not possess a demeanour compatible with a rigid, often-oppressive educational system, having known from pre-adolescence that he loved poetry. After completing his schooling in 1893, Hesse found work in a bookstore, an antique store and a clock tower factory while he focused on publishing his poems and writing prose. In the new decade, Hesse continued publishing novellas while earning acclaim for novels such as Siddhartha (1922), set in India during the time of the Buddha and reflecting the author’s own travels (which this review is about). In 1927 he published Steppenwolf, a mystical affair that chronicled the meeting of the despondent Harry Haller with the liberated Hermine. In 1930, the novel Narcissus and Goldmund followed a metaphorical work focusing on the contrasting sensibilities of a teacher and his student. Hesse took more than a decade to complete his next, last and longest novel, The Glass Bead Game, aka Magister Ludi, which was published in 1943 and tackled the contours of a utopian society. Hesse was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature for his body of work, with his health barring him from travelling to Stockholm to attend the ceremony. He died on August 9, 1962, in Montagnola, Switzerland. https://www.biography.com/people/hermann-hesse-9337513

A little bit about the book
Herman Hesse's Siddharta was born into an upper-class family in ancient India and was expected by everyone to become a Brahmin (a socially or culturally superior person) like his father and has a best friend that follows him loyally called Govinda. Siddharta was born to be different than his family, being secretly dissatisfied with his existence and the expectation of what route everyone wishes him to take, he feels that something is missing. He becomes obsessed with the idea of enlightenment and focusses on religions and rituals in trying to get there. With no success and observing the fact that his father and others in his community hadn't ever reached it he decides, to the reluctance of his family he decides to take his own path. Govinda, highly influenced and admiring of his friend wants to reach enlightenment also and decides to join Siddharta in this new life. On his journey, he learns to disassociate himself from material things, and what Hesse describes as the traditional trapping of everyday life. He, therefore, loses his desire for property, clothing, sexuality and all things that would hinder his path to enlightenment. He was influenced on his journey after meeting 'semanas' who can be described as a group of people who practices severe self-discipline and abstention. Siddharta and Govindas time spent with the semanas lead them to hear about a Buddha who has attained total spiritual enlightenment called Gotama and they decide to leave the group in search of him. They subsequently find him and both are impressed at first but as time wore on, Siddharta found doubts about the practices of Gotama such as the eightfold path of Buddhism. He eventually moved on and left Govinda behind as he became to realise that Buddhism will not give him the answers he needs for enlightenment. From here, he moves on and embarks on a life free from meditation and instead delves into the material world once again. He meets more influential people on his journey through life, such as a friendly ferryman and his eventual lover called Kamala who teaches him essential lessons about love.

Soon, Siddharta is a rich man and is living what we today would call a successful life, as anything in the material world is his for the taking. Through this, Siddharta becomes detached from his life and can never see life as anything more than a game and this eventually takes a toll on his mental health. But Hesse makes it apparent that this was an essential part of his development as a person. Without telling the whole story, he finds himself back on the path of non-materialism, encountering Govinda who is now a Buddhist monk, having a son, and further pushes his life towards enlightenment. I really love this book, because it invokes feelings of the journey of life being the fruit of life. It has essential lessons for the path of enlightenment in life, through all of its negatives and positives. Also, the link with rivers and water throughout the book and the properties they have to invoke inner peace is something I relate with greatly. "body": "

\n\n
About the Author
\n\nHermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany. His parents, Johannes and Marie, were of varied European ancestry and had done missionary work in India. Hesse was also expected to pursue a religious career, and at his parents urging he attended the theological seminary in Maulbronn.\n\nBut as Hesse would later remark, he did not possess a demeanour compatible with a rigid, often-oppressive educational system, having known from pre-adolescence that he loved poetry. After completing his schooling in 1893, Hesse found work in a bookstore, an antique store and a clock tower factory while he focused on publishing his poems and writing prose.\n\nIn the new decade, Hesse continued publishing novellas while earning acclaim for novels such as Siddhartha (1922), set in India during the time of the Buddha and reflecting the author’s own travels (which this review is about). In 1927 he published Steppenwolf, a mystical affair that chronicled the meeting of the despondent Harry Haller with the liberated Hermine. In 1930, the novel Narcissus and Goldmund followed a metaphorical work focusing on the contrasting sensibilities of a teacher and his student.\n\nHesse took more than a decade to complete his next, last and longest novel, The Glass Bead Game, aka Magister Ludi, which was published in 1943 and tackled the contours of a utopian society. Hesse was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature for his body of work, with his health barring him from travelling to Stockholm to attend the ceremony. He died on August 9, 1962, in Montagnola, Switzerland.\n\nhttps://www.biography.com/people/hermann-hesse-9337513\n\n

\n\n
A little bit about the book
\n\nHerman Hesse's Siddharta was born into an upper-class family in ancient India and was expected by everyone to become a Brahmin (a socially or culturally superior person) like his father and has a best friend that follows him loyally called Govinda. \n\nOn his journey, he learns to disassociate himself from material things, and what Hesse describes as the traditional trapping of everyday life. He, therefore, loses his desire for property, clothing, sexuality and all things that would hinder his path to enlightenment. He was influenced on his journey after meeting 'semanas' who can be described as a group of people who practices severe self-discipline and abstention. Siddharta and Govindas time spent with the semanas lead them to hear about a Buddha who has attained total spiritual enlightenment called Gotama and they decide to leave the group in search of him.\n\nThey subsequently find him and both are impressed at first but as time wore on, Siddharta found doubts about the practices of Gotama such as the eightfold path of Buddhism. \n\n

\n\nSoon, Siddharta is a rich man and is living what we today would call a successful life, as anything in the material world is his for the taking. Through this, Siddharta becomes detached from his life and can never see life as anything more than a game and this eventually takes a toll on his mental health. But Hesse makes it apparent that this was an essential part of his development as a person. \n\nWithout telling the whole story, he finds himself back on the path of non-materialism, encountering Govinda who is now a Buddhist monk, having a son, and further pushes his life towards enlightenment. \n\nI really love this book, because it invokes feelings of the journey of life being the fruit of life. It has essential lessons for the path of enlightenment in life, through all of its negatives and positives. Also, the link with rivers and water throughout the book and the properties they have to invoke inner peace is something I relate with greatly. \n\nReally recommend it x\n\n
Prosoché, Prokopé & Phila
\n\n
**Adam x**
\n\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\n
The Bookclub
\n\n[Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-1-ego-is-the-enemy-ryan-holiday)\n[The Wisdom Of Insecurity, Alan Watts](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-2-the-wisdom-of-insecurity-alan-watts)\n[Tools of Titans, Tim Ferris](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-tools-of-titans-tim-ferris)\n[Homo-Deus, Yuval Noah Harari](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-4-homo-deus-yuval-noah-harari)\n[Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-5-radical-acceptance-tara-brach)\n[Born a crime, Trevor Noah](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-born-a-crime-trevor-noah)\n[How brands grow, Byron Sharp](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-7-how-brands-grow-byron-sharp)\n[Tales of modern Russia, Peter Pomerantsev](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-8-tales-of-modern-russia)\n[Stone Soup, Marcia Brown](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-9-stone-soup)\n[How to get filthy rich in rising Asia, Mohsin Hamid](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-10-how-to-get-filthy-rich-in-rising-asia)\n[The Art of War, Sun Tzu](https://steemit.com/bookclub/@eldergill/book-club-friday-s-11-the-art-of-war-sun-tzu)\n[Why Bob Dylan Matters, Richard F. | body |

“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” I immediately relate this to how we live in a hyper-consumerist society where too many people feel as though they can find meaning in the hoarding of possessions. This is a pitfall I believe because the pleasure or the wealth attained from these things is only a momentary thing, and it, in fact, can take the pleasure away from more natural things such as love and friendship. It is my opinion that less is more because the authentic pleasure you can get from little, is more sustainable and lasts longer than the instant pleasure that you get from buying a new car or amassing a posse of fake friends who only want you for social climbing or your material wealth. Wealth is being content with less, and in today's age, this is a really rare characteristic, because it isn't easy to reach this viewpoint while we are subjected to marketing and a herd-like mentality on a day to day basis. So my advice is to start simple, start writing three things you are grateful for every day, but keep them simple - whether it is people, nature-related or a quality about yourself that you are grateful for (after all, self-love is essential for a wealthy life). Also, you could try minimalism, it isn't for everyone, but it actually allows you to appreciate possessions in a different light, and actually not having many forces you to problem solve, and to develop virtues which you may not get the opportunity to do when you have a lot of stuff. It will be difficult, it will seem meaningless at first in this world of consumerism, but eventually, I am certain that it will pay off and less is actually FAR MORE in a wealth sense. Have a wonderful week!
**Prosoché, Prokopē & Phila**

**Adam x**

Who was Epictetus?

Born into slavery 55AD Epictetus is the famous Stoic of whom is most influenced by God, or the Greek Gods as they were in those times. His slave master was very fond of him and allowed him to study philosophy in his spare time, and this is when he was exposed to the ‘Stoa’ teachings by his mentor Musonius Rufus. Epictetus gained freedom from slavery shortly after Emperor Nero’s death and subsequently began teaching philosophy. He taught stoicism for the rest of his life, even when forced to leave Rome as philosophers were banned in Rome, he simply moved to Greece and taught for his remaining days until he died in 135AD. His tao is spread over a few books, each of which is harder reads when compared to Aurelius or Seneca’s writings. |
