| body | After a weekend in Orlando, 17-year-old Lizzie Martinez decided to go easy on her sunburned shoulders. So she went to school, Braden River High in Bradenton, Fla., without a bra under her oversize, gray, long-sleeved T-shirt. Those straps can sting when they rub against a sunburn! “I just expected to make it through a normal day,” Martinez tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I didn’t think anything of it.” But during the day, Martinez says school dean Violeta Velazquez called Martinez into her office and told her a teacher heard a boy in her class laughing and telling his friends about her lack of bra. The offending shirt. (Photo: Lizzy Martinez) The offending shirt. (Photo: Courtesy of Lizzy Martinez) “I never heard anybody,” Martinez says. Velazquez had her put on an undershirt and then asked Martinez to stand up and move around, according to the teen. Not satisfied with the solution, Martinez says the dean asked the nurse to get her four Band-Aids and told her to go to the bathroom and “X-out her nipples.” “I got a text message from Lizzy that said, ‘I feel completely sexualized and I’m so embarrassed,’” Martinez’s mother, Kari Knop, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Knop left work and picked her daughter up from school right away. “If this was a male dean, we would not even be having this discussion to try to justify the behavior.” Over the course of three conversations with school administrators, Knop says she heard different variations on the story — because her daughter hadn’t violated any dress code rule, she wasn’t in trouble, but they also said that she was a “distraction.” “What about the kid that was supposedly cackling in the class?” Knop said she asked during a meeting with the dean, the principal, and a representative of the school board. “That’s social bullying. Did we address that? You have a zero tolerance for bullying in the school.” Martinez asked her mother to take their story to the local media to address the issue of body-shaming girls. “The dean told me it was to save myself from my own embarrassment,” Martinez says. “If it truly was that, the students that were talking about me, that should have been addressed and not me, because I wasn’t the issue. I felt like they were shaming me into believing that I was the issue because I have a larger amount of breast tissue than most people at my school.” The school district has admitted that the dean’s way of addressing Martinez was wrong. “It is undisputed that this matter should have been handled differently at the school level, and corrective measures have been taken to prevent a reoccurrence in the way these matters will be addressed in the future,” Mitchell Teitelbaum, the district’s general counsel, told the Bradenton Herald in a prepared statement. Knop tells Yahoo Lifestyle that school district Superintendent Diana Greene said in a phone conversation that she wanted to change the dress code to require girls to wear undergarments to avoid this kind of dispute in the future. Knop and her daughter don’t think this would be fair, either. “Not that I’m going to start a whole revolution about it, but if girls don’t feel comfortable wearing bras, or whatever the case may be, I don’t think they need to be held up to a standard that they have to,” Martinez says. Martinez is one of many students across the country who have been taking a stand against dress code rules that, at least in practice, some argue tend to discriminate against girls and children of color. Education and child psychology experts disagree with these schools’ justification that they’re protecting students from distraction. “It’s much more disruptive, not just of that child’s education but of all children’s education, to pull that kid out, to have him and his peers buzzing about, ‘Is his hair going to get him in trouble?’” Deborah Gilboa, MD, a family physician and parenting expert, told Yahoo Lifestyle recently. “That drives a wedge between the educators and the students, and puts them on opposite sides of an issue that doesn’t have to be an issue.” Martinez, who attended the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C., in March, has taken inspiration from the student activists from Parkland, Fla. There’s a valuable lesson kids can learn when they question the rules, whether they’re about gun control, dress codes, or something else that affects their lives, Gilboa said. “Teaching kids how to create change within the systems in which they live, respectfully — that’s an incredibly useful skill,” she said. |

| body | While vacationing at Holden Beach in North Carolina last week, 42-year-old Brent Garlington spotted what is thought to be a wrecked Civil War-era steamer. Garlington, of Fayetteville, N.C., flew a drone over the Lockwood Folly Inlet, which is located between Holden Beach and Oak Island. The tide was low because of the full moon, Garlington told Fox News on Tuesday. This prompted him to take a walk on the beach sandbar and ultimately capture the footage using a drone. shipwreck steamer Brent Garlington captured the footage while on vacation with his family. (Brent Garlington ) While Garlington didn’t discover the vessel, he believes “this is the first time it has been seen from this perspective." "You really can’t see it that clearly unless it’s low tide," he added. steamer 2 The wreckage is believed to be part of a Civil War-era steamer. (Brent Garlington ) Garlington first heard about this particular steamer from his brother-in-law, who's a pilot and a “big history buff." His brother-in-law spotted the steamer while flying a helicopter over the same area last year. Others have noticed it while fishing or riding on a boat, he said. “When he told me about it, I thought it was pretty neat,” Garlington said. Since then, he's wanted to see the wreckage for himself. steamer 3 Garlington said he wanted to see the steamer for himself ever since his brother-in-law told him about it. (Brent Garlington) At first, Garlington wasn’t planning on sharing his footage -- but then a fellow beachgoer suggested posting a clip to The Friends of Holden Beach Facebook group. Within 30 minutes, his "phone was blowing up." “Most people are amazed; they had no idea that it was there,” Garlington said of the reactions to the video. Others commented that they have seen the wreckage, but “never from that angle,” he said. Separately, in 2016, researchers with the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources found a submerged Civil War-era steamer which is “believed to possibly be the remains of one of three blockade runners used to penetrate the wall of Union naval vessels blocking the port of Wilmington during the Civil War,” the organization said at the time. |

| body | You can probably argue over whether it's a good or a bad sign, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter today a report in The Information that he has taken over direct control of the division that's producing Tesla's Model 3 electric sedan after the company failed to meet the delivery goals it had set. Specifically, Tesla had intended to produce 500 Model 3 cars per day, or 2,500 per week, by the end of last month. But according to a company-wide email to employees that was sent today and obtained by Jalopnik, Musk said Tesla has been making closer to 2,000 of the cars per week. (Musk estimated last July that Tesla would be making 20,000 of the cars per month by December.) In his email -- fired off at 3 am. PDT -- Musk added that if "things go as planned today, we will comfortably exceed that number over a seven day period!” Musk may have been referring in part to the reorganization. But while The Information reported that Musk had seemingly "pushed aside the company’s senior vice president of engineering, Doug Field, who had been overseeing manufacturing in recent months," Musk quickly took issue with that characterization of events. He complained on Twitter to Information reporter Amir Efrati, "Can't believe you're even writing about this. My job as CEO is to focus on what's most critical, which is currently Model 3 production. Doug, who I regard as one of the world's most talented engineering execs, is focused on vehicle engineering." Musk continued, tweeting: "About a year ago, I asked Doug to manage both engineering & production. He agreed that Tesla needed [engineering and production to be] better aligned, so we don't design cars that are crazy hard to build. Right now, tho, better to divide & conquer, so I'm back to sleeping at factory. Car biz is hell …" That Musk is feeling sensitive to press reports right now won't come as a surprise to anyone who follows the company, given the string of negative publicity that Tesla has received in recent weeks. In addition to a voluntary recall of 123,000 Model S vehicles that owes to a problem with the power-steer component of some of the cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week launched an investigation into the role of Tesla's Autopilot in a fatal crash. In fact, in a series of separate tweets today, Musk responded to the National Transportation Safety Board, a safety agency that said it was "unhappy" with Tesla's decision on Friday to publish a blog post about the accident, given that investigations are ongoing. In that post, Tesla said the driver, since identified as an Apple engineer, "had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive and the driver’s hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision." The company also noted that a highway safety barrier that might have lessened the impact of the collision had been "crushed in a prior accident without being replaced." The suggestion was plainly that Tesla can't be blamed, at least not entirely, for the fatality. |

| body | The verbal exchange lasted only 45 seconds. Robert Coleman threw one punch. Fedelia Montiel-Benitez died in a hospital 10 days later, and Coleman will now most likely go to prison for 10 years for second-degree murder. He was found guilty at trial in Alexandria Circuit Court on Monday after arguing unsuccessfully that while he did punch Montiel-Benitez in a 7-Eleven last July, he had no intention of killing her. Coleman, 27, told detectives Montiel-Benitez called him the n-word, and he snapped. Prosecutors claimed the 39-year-old woman did not speak enough English to use such a slur — and that even if she had, it did not justify Coleman’s response. “Words alone” are no reason to kill, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney David Lord said in closing arguments. Robert Coleman, 27, was found guilty of second-degree murder Monday in Alexandria Circuit Court. (Alexandria Detention Center) “We of course remain disappointed that they didn't see it as manslaughter,” Coleman’s attorney, Robert Jenkins, said after the jury returned. He said Coleman and his family were “grateful” for the jury’s recommended sentence, given that second-degree murder can carry a punishment of up to 40 years. It reflected, Jenkins said, “that this was not something that he wanted to happen, that he did not intend to take someone’s life.” A judge will formally sentence Coleman on May 24, but deviations from jury recommendations are rare. He is being held at the Alexandria Detention Center. “In an all-too-often repeated theme, a tragedy unfolded because of a defendant’s inability to tolerate a perceived slight,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter said in a statement. “Verbal arguments should never devolve into physical altercations because physical altercations often bring devastating consequences.” [Woman assaulted outside a convenience store in Alexandria dies] Coleman and Montiel-Benitez were strangers. In the video Coleman can be seen chasing Montiel-Benitez outside. Through the leaves of a tree, another camera captures the punch that put Montiel-Benitez in a coma from which she did not recover. Coleman fled the scene and was picked up the next day when a detective recognized him in the surveillance video. He at first denied involvement in what he thought was simply an assault. When he was told Montiel-Benitez was in critical condition, he admitted hitting her, but said he had not meant to cause serious harm. | body | When survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting returned to classes after spring break on Monday, they were met with a slew of new security measures, including a widely resented policy: mandatory clear backpacks for everyone. Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were killed in a mass shooting in February, were quick to express their disdain for their new accessory. Junior Cameron Kasky stuffed his backpack with tampons on Tuesday to protest what students have called an invasion of privacy. Senior Carmen Lo took a jab at Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and the National Rifle Association by hanging a $1.05 orange price tag on her bag ― the value of the donations Rubio has accepted from the NRA divided by the number of students in Florida. “This backpack is probably worth more than my life,” read a note that Lo had penned and stuffed inside her bag. The idea of using clear backpacks in schools as a way to prevent gun violence is not new. Schools across the country have enforced similar rules since at least the Columbine High School massacre in 1999. But Stoneman Douglas students — many of whom have led a national call for stricter gun control — say the measure is only window dressing and does not actually address the problem of gun violence. “I hate the backpacks, and I think they solve nothing,” Alyssa Goldfarb, a 16-year-old sophomore, told Vice News. “It’s more of a way of the county saying, ‘Hey, we’re doing something.’” As students pushed back against the new backpack rule this week, Robert Runcie, the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, said the policy was “an initial measure, not a permanent one.” He told the Sun-Sentinel that the district may eventually allow other backpacks and that officials were determining the best methods to keep students safe in the long term, including the possible use of metal-detecting wands. A district spokeswoman told the paper that officials were still exploring the idea of using such wands. “No decision or date has been set for [their] use,” she said. Besides the backpacks, other security measures — including increased police presence and a requirement that students wear an ID tag at all times — have been introduced at Stoneman Douglas since the February massacre. Though some students say they do feel safer with the new policies in place, several said this week that the school environment now feels stifling and “like jail.” “I definitely feel safer, but in no way is school going to be a place of cognitive education and creativity when it feels like a jail cell,” junior Jack Macleod told CNN. |

Schools across the country have enforced similar rules since at least the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.\n\nBut Stoneman Douglas students — many of whom have led a national call for stricter gun control — say the measure is only window dressing and does not actually address the problem of gun violence.\n\n“I hate the backpacks, and I think they solve nothing,” Alyssa Goldfarb, a 16-year-old sophomore, told Vice News. “It’s more of a way of the county saying, ‘Hey, we’re doing something.’”\n\nAs students pushed back against the new backpack rule this week, Robert Runcie, the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, said the policy was “an initial measure, not a permanent one.”\n\nHe told the Sun-Sentinel that the district may eventually allow other backpacks and that officials were determining the best methods to keep students safe in the long term, including the possible use of metal-detecting wands.\n\nA district spokeswoman told the paper that officials were still exploring the idea of using such wands. “No decision or date has been set for [their] use,” she said.\n\nBesides the backpacks, other security measures — including increased police presence and a requirement that students wear an ID tag at all times — have been introduced at Stoneman Douglas since the February massacre.\n\nThough some students say they do feel safer with the new policies in place, several said this week that the school environment now feels stifling and “like jail.” \n\n“I definitely feel safer, but in no way is school going to be a place of cognitive education and creativity when it feels like a jail cell,” junior Jack Macleod told CNN.",

| body | Saints quarterback Drew Brees has made many millions on the football field. He’ll now try to make millions more in the courtroom. Via TMZ, Brees has sued Vahid Moradi of CJ Charles Jewelry in San Diego. Brees claims that he has purchased roughly $15 million worth of jewelry, and that it was independently appraised at being worth $9 million less than the price Brees paid for the items. One of the items — a diamond ring for which Brees paid $8.18 million — allegedly appraised for only $3.75 million. Moradi’s lawyer contends that nothing improper occurred. “Drew Brees aggressively purchased multi-million dollar pieces of jewelry,” Eric M. George told TMZ. “Years later, claiming to suffer ‘cash flow problems,’ he tried to bully my client into undoing the transactions. . . . Mr. Brees’s behavior and his belief that he was wronged because the jewelry did not appreciate in value as quickly as he hoped both demonstrate a lack of integrity and contradict basic principles of both economics and the law.” Brees can spend his money however he sees fit, and if he regards jewelry as some sort of investment, that’s his prerogative. Given the manner in which jewelers routinely (and dramatically) mark up their merchandise, however, it’s probably a good idea to get the independent appraisal before buying it, not after. That said, there’s a chance that Brees did, and there’s a chance that there’s a lot more to this story. Absent a settlement, it’s a story that we’ll know about every step of the way, since it will be playing out via public filings, hearings, and ultimately a trial. |

| body | A package bomb blew up at a FedEx Corp distribution center near San Antonio on Tuesday, officials said, and the FBI was investigating whether it was linked to a series of four homemade bombs that hit the Texas capital of Austin this month. Officials did not say if the latest incident was the work of what Austin police believe could be a serial bomber responsible for the four earlier devices that killed two people and injured four others. The blast at the FedEx facility in Schertz, northeast of San Antonio, was the fifth in the state in the last 18 days. If it is linked to the others, it would be the first outside the Austin area and the first that involves a commercial parcel service. "We are investigating it as being possibly related to our open investigation," FBI spokeswoman Michelle Lee told the Austin American-Statesman newspaper. "We can't know for sure until we have an opportunity to look at the evidence itself." The package, filled with nails and metal shrapnel, exploded shortly after midnight local time at the facility, about 65 miles south of Austin, the San Antonio Fire Department said on Twitter. The company described it as a FedEx Ground sorting facility. About 75 people were working at the facility at the time, fire officials said. The individual or people behind the bombings are likely to be highly skilled and methodical, said Fred Burton, chief security officer for Stratfor, a private intelligence and security consulting firm based in Austin. "This is a race against time to find him before he bombs again," Burton said. A few hours after the blast near San Antonio, police in Austin said they were investigating a suspicious package at a FedEx facility in the city. Roads were closed in an area a few miles from Austin's main airport, and FedEx employees told local media that work was halted at the facility. There was no indication the suspicious package on Tuesday morning was related to the serial bombings. Company officials were not immediately available for comment. More than 500 federal agents were involved in the investigation, officials said, and the White House was monitoring the situation, spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told Fox News. Austin Mayor Steve Adler on Tuesday sought to reassure citizens. "While the concern is real and the anxiety is real ... it can’t immobilize us. It has to make us more determined. It has to make us more vigilant,” he told local television station Fox 7. The first three devices were parcel bombs dropped off in front of homes on in three eastern Austin neighborhoods. The fourth went off on Sunday night on the west side of the city and was described by police as a more sophisticated device detonated through a trip wire mechanism. The four devices were similar in construction, suggesting they were the work of the same bomb maker, officials said. The first two bombs killed Anthony Stephan House, a 39-year-old black man on March 2 and Draylen Mason, a 17-year-old African-American teenager on March 12. The third, also on March 12, severely injured a 75-year-old Hispanic woman. Police said they are investigating whether the bombings were hate crimes. Sunday's trip wire bomb, which injured two white men who were walking in the neighborhood, went off shortly after police made a rare public call to the suspect to explain his motives. Austin, with a population of nearly 1 million people, is home to the University of Texas and a plethora of technology companies and has been one of the fastest growing major U.S. cities. |
