      "body": "A close friend of mine was born in Lagos, Nigeria\nand arrived in England aged 3. In preparation for\nstarting school, her parents ensured her\ncommand of the English language (both orally\nand in writing) was perfected.\nWhen her parents attempted to enroll her in\nschool, they were met with some resistance. The\nHead Master asked a number of dubious\nquestions, which in hindsight were based on pre-\nconceived stereotypes.\nHe presumed having just left Nigeria, my friend\nwould be academically regressive. Her parents\nwere understandably deeply offended and\ninsulted by the insinuation that their child was\nanything but highly intelligent.\nHer parents insisted she should be tested and\nafter much convincing, she was admitted into a\nCatholic Primary School.\nI recall that memory not with much fondness but\nwith curiosity. I realise that the teaching\nprofession in England had and still does have a\nnegative image of Africans, in terms of the\nquality and level of educational attainment.\nLow quality and high dropout rates led to the\nperception that many African children leave\nschool without having obtained a sustainable\nlevel of basic reading, writing and numeracy\nskills. I am fully cognisant of the fact that not all\nchildren in Africa benefit from education and\nliteracy rates in certain countries (I.e. South\nSudan, Burkina Faso and Niger) are significantly\nbelow acceptable levels.\nHowever, standards are improving. Africa’s young\npeople are better educated than ever before.\nPrimary school enrollment has risen to 80% and\nyouth literacy rates in sub-Saharan Africa, which\nare the lowest of any region, have improved over\nthe past 20 years and are now about 70% (World\nEconomic Forum, 2016).\nThis poor perception of Africa's educational\nstandards are of course rooted in a concerted\neffort by the western media to present and\nperpetuate a false image and narrative of Africa\nas being backward and under-developed.\nMany of us in the UK who have little connection\nto Africa, automatically think of war, famine,\ninsecurity, political strife and corruption when we\nthink of Africa. But how many of us ask why we\nthink that, or bother to question whether that\nconception is based in reality?\nThere is a powerful propaganda machine at play\nthat Africa is nothing more than a disease ridden\nprimitive place, with malnourished children.\nI beg to differ!\nAfter decades of the British media barely sparing\na second thought for the African continent\nbeyond charity advertisements portraying starving\nchildren. There is rarely any meaningful\ndiscussion of the impact of decades of British\nbacked coups, reckless weapons proliferation and\nagenda-driven endeavors by former colonial\npowers to replace every organic government with\npuppet politicians - which has ultimately played a\nlarge role in creating the perpetual instability\nthat plagues certain regions of Africa.\nNo-one talks about the Structural Adjustment\nprogrammes or the exorbitant loans African\ncountries are still repaying, which could be\ninvested in better resources, educational\nfacilities, research centers, hospitals etc. When\nyou pillage and loot a Continent for 400 years,\none could assume it would take an equal amount\nof time to restore it.\nThere is never any real discussion of the millions\nof Africans who live in peace and prosperity; of\nburgeoning economies and peaceful transitions\nof power; no discussion of the trials and\ntribulations that the nations of Africa have\novercome in the past forty decades.\nThe perverted perception of Africa is a part of\ningrained white supremacy and cultural\nimperialism. This must change!\nAfricans are aware of their problems. Instability\nwith governments, poor environmental\nmanagement, threats of civil unrest,\nmisappropriation of funds, structural issues such\nas transport, power, water, food and fuel\nscarcity, ethnic tensions and a lack of\nemployment opportunities.\nHowever, these problems are universal. No\ncountry is devoid of these issues. And we need a\nmore balanced world view.\nAfrica is on the rise and is becoming a force to\nbe reckoned with. Owing to its large and youthful\npopulation, an expanding middle class, increasing\nurbanization, influx of expatriates and\nmultinational companies - these factors have\nbecome key drivers of demand for commercial,\nreal estate and entrepreneurial growth.\nIn the first decade of the 21st century, the tide\nhas turned: six of the 10 fastest growing\neconomies in the world are in sub-Saharan\nAfrica: Mozambique, Rwanda, Angola, Nigeria,\nChad and Ethiopia.\nAccording to the World Bank, which compiles a\nranking of countries’ business environments, five\nof the 10 fastest reformers in the Bank’s latest\nreport on the ease of doing business are in\nAfrica.\nMaybe it's time to re-imagine Africa as a\ndestination for only tourism, but wealth creation,\nas trailblazers in fashion, food and music, a\nbeacon for democracy, with highly esteemed and\nrevered institutions and at the forefront of\ntechnological, scientific and medical\nadvancements.\n\"Africa is rich in natural resources. Africa’s\nknowledge base is expanding. Africa could still\nultimately reclaim the position it occupied when\nthe Portuguese explorers first arrived. But that\nstory will be told not only in national income\nstatistics.       "body": "Our backspace buttons have stored more stories\nthan our chat histories have, our realizations\ncame in a little later than they should have. Mine\ndid at least, you? You were always the perfect\nand aware one. It would dawn upon me one by\none each day, each mistake I never made that\nmade you love me a little less. Why? Maybe\nbecause it is over isn’t it? Because you, you\nwon’t turn back and hold me in your arms again\nlike the first time you did. And if you do, I\npromise I will tightly hold your hands and never\nlet you go.\nIf only, if only you loved me and saw me break\neach day as I slowly choked on the poison of\nreality, the reality of us. It all crashed, did it not?\nYou won’t be here around to make it stand all\nover again. I am a self conscious, self obsessed\nimmature girl who hid behind curtains to play\nwith you and smiled at the sight of your face.\nLet me tell you a secret, a secret you will never\nknow that maybe, maybe we were meant to be\nbecause signs always said so, because we kept\ncrossing paths till you picked me up and took me\nwith you. Soon enough, you became my\nconstant wish, my constant prayer. In my life,\nlove exists in the present, I breathe in the dust\nof it that flies into my present, embellished with\nyour scent and that reminds me that this? The\nessence of us? It will always be.\nIt’s over and it’s gone, it’s ghost will haunt me\nforever and soon, I will fall in love with it too.\nYour footsteps will resonate in my dreams till my\nmind turns itself to mute and then, then I will see\nus, there, just almost there and then my foot\nwould twist because I am shaped out of\nclumsiness and you wait, you wait but the path is\nnowhere to be seen and we are stranded alone\ntill you find the girl with light shiny enough to\nlead you out.       "body": "Sometimes people tend to take your\nemotional iron wall for granted. They\nthink you are robotic, without any\nfeelings. They think whatever they do,\nno matter how large their pot of sarcasm\nis, no matter how harsh their criticism\ncan be, at the end of the day they assume\nyou will play it all cool. They don’t\nrealize the hell that is brewing up inside\nyou. They don’t realize that it takes\nimmense strength to put up that smile\nand shoo off their sh** coolly. They think\nyou will keep on enduring it. Even if you\nstretch yourself to the point of heart\nbreak, they expect you to stretch it some\nmore. They do what they are best at\ndoing; demotivating. A time comes when\nyou literally shake your good self and\nponder over what’s going on? You keep\non collecting those shattered pieces of\nyour ego, confidence, heart and honesty\nand they continue to stone it some more.\nThey think it’s a FUN game. They think\nit’s entertaining to pull a runner away\nfrom the finishing line at the 11 hour.\nThey believe their success lies in the\nfailures of others. Because that’s the only\nthing in the whole wide world that they\nare best at doing.\nAt times, it really becomes hard to collect\nyour pieces that this world breaks. No\nmatter how hard you try to tape them\ntogether with the hopes of a better\ntomorrow and the blessings of yesterday,\nsome part of you is wounded with every\ncrack. You try to push them away but\nsomewhere in the back of your mind\ntheir echo is heard. A time comes when\nyou give up. Give up to being the good,\ncool girl. Because the mask that you have\nbeen wearing becomes old, torn and\nrusted. It becomes too thin to hide away\nthe emotions bubbling inside you. The\nsmile wears off. You can’t keep it\nanymore. You give up. Not because the\nworld was true but because you become\ntoo tired to bow them with your truth.\nIt’s no fun playing the mask game. It’s\nno fun playing the cool-headed girl.       "body": "I don't wanna hide it anymore.\nTwo years passed by and I still don't know where\nwe stand..\nMaybe you think of me as a friend or maybe not.\nMaybe you think that I'm an idiot and want\nnothing to do with me.\nMaybe you don't think of me at all.\nBut still..\nEvery time you're around I don't really know what\nto say and I become insecure and self\nconscious.\nIt's an uncomfortable thing not knowing whether\nto show affection or be indifferent because you\ndon't know how they'll take it.\nThat unexpected almost kiss on new year's eve\nleft me perplexed and I didn't know how to deal\nwith it. How to deal with you. It was out of\nnowhere and it changed a lot. I didn't take it\nseriously but I guess your intention was obvious\ntwo weeks later on my birthday.\nThe side of my story is that I pushed you away.\nBut I didn't know if you meant it or not and it\nnever happened to me before to have someone\ninterested in me that way. I wasn't even sure if I\nthought of you in that way. I loved your way of\nthinking and I couldn't help but feel energetic\nwhen you're around but I was scared that I didn't\nknow you enough.\nIt hurts. It hurts a lot not knowing what to do\nand how to handle it especially when I haven't\nbeen in a relationship before and I was scared to\nmess things up especially with you.\nI thought that by avoiding it and acting as if\nnothing happened things wouldn't be awkward\nand our friendship wouldn't be ruined. But it\nwasn't the case. At least not for me.\nA coward I was for running away from it,\nwhether you meant it or not because it messed\nup my head when something like having someone\nin my life was the least of my concerns but\nsuddenly it became everything I could think of.\nWe never talked about it really, I never dared I\nguess.\nI tell myself that someday we'll get a chance to\ntalk deeply and honestly about what we think of\neach other but it won't happen because you see,\nI'm not much of a great talker and you probably\ndon't care.\nYou mean a lot to me as a person and I didn't\nwant to ruin whatever was between us and hurt\nyou but I guess that's exactly what happened.\nWe barely talk anymore, and if we do it's a\nshallow and meaningless conversation.\nIf you could read my mind you'd know how much\nI tried to sum up the courage and talk about it\nbut the proper words just won't get out, and plus\nit would be very weird after all this time to open\nthat subject out of nowhere.       "body": "The first time she said hello, I forgot what my name sounded like. It was the first day of college and she was wearing a green hoodie even though it was a  perfect summer day. The kind of day which is so\ncommon in books and stories, but very rare in real life. Her hair looked frizzy and I know that does not sound like a compliment but for her it was. She pulled it off and looked so beautiful to make even an atheist believe in God because\nnothing else could have created  something so heavenly. The distractions and voices in my head stopped. I couldn’t speak, only stare. Stare at this heavenly being who had decided to stand among\nus mortals and give us a glimpse of what heavenlooked like. We went out for a bite, we chatted up quite a bit. She was a poet, just like me. Sometimes I wonder if I do that too much with roles I play, because if I'm absolutely truthful, I quite like being the best friend, or the supporting role, and actually I ought to gear-change and make myself the leading role. In my dreams, I could be a Princess, and that's  what I was. Like most teenage girls, I believed nothing less than a Prince could make my dreams come true. Since I don't look like every other girl, it took a while to be okay with that, to be different. But different is good. Well I think every girl needs to love herself, regardless of anything. Like if you're having a bad day, if you don't like your hair, if you don't have the best family situation, whatever, you have to love yourself and you can't do anything until you love yourself first. Girls are capable of doing everything men are capable of doing. Sometimes they have more imagination than the men. You see girl power is about loving yourself and having confidence and strength from\nwithin, so even if you're not wearing a sexy outfit, you feel sexy. Beauty is not just in a white girl.
