      "body": "I note that the data in most organizations is proprietary, and not distributed amongst witnesses.  While disks are not the maximally fastest data storage solutions, they are considerably less expensive.  The point to this is that enabling a variety of innovators to participate in Steem is desirable, while corporations have a different use for their data.\n\nI recall that some of the first automobiles ever on American roads were electric cars.  Just because something didn't take over the market, or has been done before, doesn't make it obsolete.  Steem is competing with certain aspects of financial, media, and other industries, just as electric cars did with Goodyear and Standard Oil.  \n\nI reckon it's more important for myriad nodes to be operated than that each node is using top shelf hardware.\n\nThanks!",

      "body": "King James, NASB, NIV... they were all good until the weird new editions came out, like \"The Message.\" Old school theologians made fun of NIV for putting a verse in the footnotes, calling it the \"nearly inspired version\" while NIV proponents rightly stated that KJV has lost relevance because it is too Shakespearean to preach to unbelievers. But KJV can be a measuring stick to evaluate new translations. \n\nBTC, BCH, ETH... They were all good until the weird new versions came out, like Bitcoin ABC. Old school crypto fans made fun of the new coins because they were allowed innovations like big block sizes, while BCH proponents rightly argued that BTC Core has lost relevance because it can never scale to be a widely used exchange medium. But BTC can be used as a measuring stick to evaluate new coins. \n\nSo where does this leave us? The Bitcoin split created Bitcoin Cash, and was analogous to the 95 Thesis. But the Bitcoin Cash split (into ABC and SV) was like two warring factions attempting to burn each other's holy books. Both sides revealed the problems with each other, while destroying the viable BCH we once knew. Now I have to choose between ABC's centralized authority and SV's Scotch drinking front man (Craig Wright). \n\nI grew up around elderly people who claimed the King James Version was the ONLY Bible. Bitcoin Core proponents remind me of those KJV fanatics, because both cling to a great work that has become irrelevant to society. The old guard despises the new, yet they have more in common with each other than they do with any other group. \n\nDifferent translations of the Bible should have been viewed for their usefulness and applicability to society at large. But they were mostly a source of contention which led to even newer editions being released that deviated significantly from the Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic transcripts.\n\nConsidering that the translation issue has never been resolved, it is difficult to guess how the cryptocurrency issue will be resolved. Perhaps the most important part of the church is not the translation used, but the people who actively participate in it. Likewise, perhaps the most important part of the cryptocosm is not the coin being used but the people who actively participate in it. If the people are indeed the most important part, then I cannot think of a better, more positive or more active group than the people involved in Steem.",

So who do you think will grab more attention, reasonable writers or sensationalists? Blame who you want, but sensationalism sells, and I am hoping to open a dialogue on Steem platforms which can delve into the environment in a reasonable manner. \n\nThe New York Times wrote a piece demonizing Microsoft for using fossil fueled backup generators so frequently at their data center in Washington State. Like many data centers, they run off cheap electricity due to the hydroelectic power plant nearby. It makes sense to use renewable power over dirty backup generators, but the generators must be run during outages and maintenance procedures. \n\nThe article from the New York Times slowly paints a picture of doom and gloom if we don’t comply with exceptional energy efficiency standards. That sounds fine enough until they end the article with the idea that we have no future at all if we don’t build the future just right. The writer also thinks that the internet isn’t the single greatest achievement of civilization, because he thinks that vaccinations have earned that spot. Seemed like an obscure comparison to me, but the article had some valid points and made me contemplate the future of technology and civilization. \n\nHe calls for better use of electricity in operating the “cloud”, but never nods to the cloud for how much electricity it can save due to making in-house servers less common (almost obsolete). This article presented a damning view of Microsoft for its intentional overuse of electricity at a data center in Washington State. But upon a cursory inspection, the article appeared to have some biased arguments. For example, the New York Times demonizes Microsoft for the incident, but if they conserved electricity, they would have been fined about $200,000 by the UTILITY. Who’s really the bad guy here? \n\nFirst came the attack on Microsoft for intentional overuse of energy, then came the comparison to Yahoo, which has a data center across the street from Microsoft. NYT states:\n\t\n“For example, Yahoo’s Quincy data center, which expanded around the same time, ran its generators just 65 hours in 2010, state records show. Microsoft’s generators operated for a combined total of 3,615 hours that     year, the records show.”\n\t\nI’m no mathematician, but 65 hours sounds like a big difference from 3,615. Too bad that is intentionally misleading. 3,615 hours ÷ 24 Generators = 150.625 hours of use. Microsoft ran its gens for just over 150 hours, and Yahoo ran theirs for 65 hours... That's not a HUGE difference! 150.625 ÷ 65 = 2.3 so as you can see, Microsoft used their generators for 2.3 times the duration that Yahoo did. The article never mentions how much Dell (the competitor across the road from Yahoo) utilized their generators. \n\t\nMathematicians might call this type of writing, “incomplete information” while other majors may refer to it as a “red herring” fallacy. CoinMarketCap.com lists it as having $150 Billion of value in USD, but there are 2080 other cryptocurrencies which they track. The first decade of cryptocurrency has been an experiment and a bit of a crazy mess. 2018 was supposed to be a year of stability, and many analysts (including Forbes) have stated that the roller coaster ride is over. Too bad they didn't see this Bitcoin Cash war coming. \n\nBitcoin has changed dramatically since I first used it in 2012, but I still can use it to pay back a friend for lunch if we both have a Bitcoin wallet on our phones. However, this does not mean that Bitcoin is destined to dominate the market of cryptocurrency. Several universities (like UC Berkeley) are considering the technology to allow students to use cryptocurrency on campus, or for dealing with large monetary assets like municipal bonds.\n\nMerchants Will Want Cryptocurrency\n\nWhile cryptocurrency is complicated behind the scenes, any local merchant who begins accepting it will get my business. There are many different types, and they have lower fees than credit or debit cards. But Steem is the revolutionary way to pay. Merchants will be able to keep ALL of the money they make. Even paper cash has a cost associated with it due to employee time spent counting and depositing it. \n\nDecentralization is essentially what I am predicting, despite the supposedly decentralized nature of the internet. The inventor of HTML began a decentralized revolution and gave it away for free even though it could have made him the richest man in the world (Tim Berners-Lee). Despite starting on a good note, the information most commonly viewed on the web has become centralized, behind the gatekeepers of Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Amazon and others. This centralization has brought about events such as the “Adpocalypse” on YouTube, and some verified social experiments from Facebook.\n\nCryptocurrency WILL take over. I am going out on a limb when I support Steem, but there is no doubt that the cryptocosm will revolutionize the next generation's use of money. Worldwide, government issued money supplies have grown about 32% per year since 1960. Population growth has been more like 1.1% during that period, which explains why we hear stories about baby-boomers buying a Coke for a nickel. \n\nInflation or Deflation?\n\nGovernments debase their currencies by increasing the money supply anytime they need to fund a war, social welfare program, or slush fund. This leads to inflation, which is a hidden tax on citizens who hold that currency, and we can rest assured our USD will decrease its buying power over the coming decades. This was the real problem that Bitcoin was invented to solve, because Bitcoin has a fixed supply which will continue to roll out in an exponentially slower manner until the year 2140. \n\nSteem actually has appreciable inflation that will decrease over time. Some experts have claimed that Bitcoin's deflationary nature will make it unusable as everyday money. Steem solves this problem. Currency value is relative, and as fiat currencies inflate, cryptocurrencies will naturally stabilize. This sounds crazy right now, but it will become clear during the next major recession.  \n\nFit Pay, Poynt and Aliant Payment Systems are already experimenting with wallets that can allow cryptocurrency wallets to buy at any merchant which has a quick reader, and the cryptocurrency can be immediately converted to fiat upon purchase. These developments are setting the stage for the adoption of cryptocurrency, and the next recession (they happen regularly) will provide impetus for greater adoption rates. As people worry about retaining the value of their savings, diversifying into cryptocurrency will allow them to have more control of their spending power. \n\nPayPal and Square are trying to become their own banks, and are also mulling the idea of using cryptocurrency, which could allow them to become the big two competitors in mobile payments which leverage cryptocurrency. Mobile payments are wonderfully diverse right now, but human nature often dictates that the market only allows two primary competitors, just like Coke and Pepsi, or Apple and Android. \n\nSteem\n\nSteemit is a platform which hopes to solve many of the problems experienced by social media users. We have seen how social networks, forums and certain websites are part of e-commerce, because they have advertisements, subscriptions, messages, contributors and moderators. From that perspective, Steemit has the potential to affect e-business in a number of ways. Most importantly, it is built upon a cryptocurrency called Steem, which allows the platform to function in a decentralized way, without ceding control to investors, a CEO, or a mad scientist/social engineer. \n\nThis Steemit post lacks the space to discuss the fine points of business to business applications and the many online retailers offering information to customers, but there are censored product reviews and hidden problems with many of the companies in this space. Steemit allows all reviewers to post what they really think, and let the market decide if they are worth being heard more. \n\nDtube \n\nDtube is part of e-commerce in a free and decentralized way. It has not seen much adoption yet, but I am predicting that a video platform like this will stand out as a major development in the coming years. Perhaps it will be after an election which holds YouTube and Facebook as culprits. A plain vlogging site would not be worth mentioning in the e-commerce space, but this one allows users to pay creators without advertisements or mysterious algorithms. \n\nDtube and Steemit are both underpinned by the same blockchain which is decentralized and uses the Steem cryptocurrency to reward creators of posts and videos. It has been said that we already live in a technocracy, whether we like it or not. But that technocracy thrives on the centralization of control, and platforms such as Dtube will allow the people to exert a greater influence than technocrats.",

      "body": "This is a major buying opportunity. Bitcoin (core, ABC & SV) is looking useless as a medium of exchange, but Steem is already an easy medium to use. Just as gold is considered a store of value, or a measuring stick, Bitcoin will likely become a store of value. \n\nI think Bitcoin ABC will supplant SV and Core as the de facto store of value, but Steem will become the medium of exchange (like cash). Does anyone else see a community like Steemit out there? \n\nJust as the USA built an industrious culture, which led to the dollar being used everywhere, so Steem communities are building a new culture in the cryptocosm that will lead to Steem being used everywhere.",
