With annual spending usually fluctuating between 500 and 600 billion dollars and a requested several billion dollar budget increase for 2018, there seems to be nothing too expensive for the US military. But what if they wanted to expand beyond Earth? If we've learned anything about doing things in outer space it's that it's very expensive.\n\n**What would it cost to build a space-based super weapon like the Death Star?** \n\nBelieve it or not a petition on *We the People*, to build a Death Star actually gathered enough signatures to merit official government  [response](https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/blog/2015/07/23/look-back-we-people-petitions-2010-today). Unsurprisingly the US government didn't think it was the best idea. Their response was: The administration does not support blowing up planets and why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one man starship?!\n\nAs silly as the petition was there actually are estimates on how much it would cost to build a Death Star in real life. The student economics blog at Lehigh University determined that it would cost 852 quadrillion dollars just to produce the steel required for construction, even without taking into account the communications equipment, weapons, personnel and day-to-day operating costs of our hypothetical Death Star. That 850 quadrillion dollar price tag is more than 13,000 times the GDP of the entire world. Once you start considering the full price things get even more ridiculous. A british energy company crunched the numbers and the cost of operating a Death Star is truly absurd after the upfront cost of constructing the base. The daily cost to keep it running would be an unbelievable 7.8 octillion dollars that's more than a hundred trillion times the annual economic activity of the entire planet!\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVYMj5HN2m9z3mJjwTz8gEyyuEqf7BcxZDKbBmx7qCxXL/image.png)\n\nIt's hard to fathom that huge of a sum, but when you break down everything that goes into running a space station of that magnitude, it starts to make sense the first Death Star depicted in Star Wars Episode four is said to have been between 100 and 140 kilometers in diameter, crewed by 1.7 million military personnel, four maintenance droids and 250,000 civilians and independent contractors. Assuming you don't have to pay the droids or the civilians and assuming you could get away with paying everyone the same low rate of say $10 an hour, paying your staff alone would set you back over 32 trillion dollars per year. Almost twice the annual GDP of the United States. Lighting the whole space station would cost fifty two billion dollars per day and every single load of laundry would cost two hundred million. Then there's waste disposal feeding your crew, fueling fighters, faster than light travel and of course powering the giant laser which would cost the reasonable sum of eight octillion dollars per use. Assuming you didn't fire the laser very often that brings us to the daily operating cost of 7.8 octillion dollars.\n\nOkay so it's pretty reasonable to assume we won't be building a Death Star any time soon but will it ever be possible in the future? Well probably not while earth does have plenty of iron to produce the steel required to build a Death Star, enough to build two million of them in fact. The problem is that this iron is mostly located in the Earth's core which would be hugely difficult and dangerous to remove. Assuming we ever figure out how to do it, if we did manage to get enough iron on the surface, at today's rate of steel production it would take over 800,000 years to produce the required amount of steel just to build the shell of the Death Star. Then to launch all that steel into orbit at the current cost of $20,000 per kilogram you're looking at over 21 quintillion dollars before you can even begin assembly. \nThe more cost-effective option would be to mine the required resources from asteroids or moons near the construction site. Of course this would still be prohibitively expensive for a one planet species like us. Even for the empire building a Death Star would have been hugely expensive according to one Star Wars expert, at its peak the Empire controlled one and a half million Core Worlds and 69 million colonies all linked together by a single economy. \n\nSo if we want to build a Death Star we have a little bit of work to do and if we ever do build one maybe we'll learn from history and not put a conveniently sized thermal exhaust port anywhere on it :)",

      "body": "<h1> Genetic Engineering - Building The Perfect Human </h1>\n\n\nWhat would you give to have perfect eyesight, a faster metabolism, to be a few inches taller or more muscular? For most of history we've had to deal with the genetic hand we've been dealt, and a lot of times that's not much fun. Genetic disorders diseases and inadequacies have plagued our species for thousands of years. But what if we could change all that? The answer may be closer than we think!\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRbskFWjmRqXjcWQB6bspSDEemhJ2K5WEmUmwFbXuybnT/image.png)\nAfter a quarter of a million years of slow natural evolution humanity's on the cusp of having the ability to edit the very building blocks of our being in the past few decades. We've developed tools that help doctors and expecting parents to anticipate any serious health conditions their child may have, such as hereditary diseases and Down syndrome. To\nsome people these tests already raise *ethical red flags* as in many cases, especially outside the United States the majority of women choose to terminate their pregnancy if the warning signs of Down syndrome are detected.\nAs our technology advances we'll be able to move from detection of these conditions to removal the first step down the road to so-called designer babies. The hope or concern is that soon enough we'll graduate from selecting out the bad genes to selecting in more favorable ones. This is where many people begin to cry eugenics and advocate extreme caution. Most people would probably agree that eliminating diseases like Huntington's or quality of life disabilities like poor eyesight would be a good thing and some even suspect that not editing out these genes would constitute an ethical failure in the future.\n\nBut what about giving your child a leg up on the competition by sprinkling in traits like increased height, or musical proficiency or above-average intelligence?\nWhile the technology to do this is on its way, we're not there just yet. And it's expected to be very expensive at least. At first you might think well if you've got the money for it and it's legal. Why not you're just giving your child the best shot at a successful life? \n\nConsider the following scenario: \nA wealthy couple decide they want to enhance their baby's genes the average woman typically has 15 eggs extracted for an in-vitro fertilization procedure. Those 15 potential children will likely differ in IQ by about 20 to 30 points. The parents will be able to select the child or children with superior intelligence to carry to term.\nDoesn't seem like that big of on the surface, but what happens when the top 10% of society can afford the procedure,\nbut the rest of the population can't? Now you have a society divided not only by the rapidly increasing wage gap,\nbut also by a new intelligence gap with wealthy children being far more likely to succeed than the 90 percent below them! \nThis would further stratify our world into the *haves* and *have-nots* with modified people only marrying and reproducing with other Modifieds. Thus keeping their gene pool more desirable the solution for this type of situation would be to make genetic modification accessible to all people. Giving everyone the ability to at least screen out disease and disabilities like poor eyesight.\n\nBut when we begin to dabble in aesthetic or additive modifications we get to the real dilemma of genetic engineering.\n**Just because we can do something doesn't necessarily mean we should do it!** First comes the issue of deciding what this perfect human would look like if we learned anything from Germany during World War two it's that when one group dictates what features are best it can cause some serious problems! When parents can start designing their ideal babies like a piece of custom furniture there's a real danger that people will become competitive adding modifications in a never-ending quest to build the ultimate human child.\nThen of course, there's the fact that our technology is rarely infallible. What happens when a couple orders a six foot **four** Greek god of a child and he only grows up to be six foot **one**?\nCould they demand a refund? Would they feel cheated out of the product they ordered? How would their child feel about being considered inferior? And how would society treat him?\n\nThen there's the international angle. China is already known for its questionable social engineering practices, such as limiting families to one child and taking children away from their parents to be enrolled in Olympic training schools, in an attempt to build future champions.\nIt doesn't take much imagination to assume that in a country like that, genetic modification would be seen as a very good thing.\nParents wouldn't have to worry about their one child being insufficient. They could order a smart strong handsome\nmale who would grow up to take care of his parents just like they'd always wanted. Olympic training schools would be packed with modified children suited to each event: Greater lung capacity and endurance for distance runners, a smaller leaner built for gymnasts, longer limbs for swimmers. When other countries use genetic modification to gain a competitive edge whether in sports or other more serious applications, what are the rest of us to do? It would be harmful to allow ourselves to be made non-competitive, but what would it cost to keep up? It would be expensive of course!\n\nBut extreme genetic engineering may also cost us some of our humanity and of course there's the potential for unforeseen health consequences to arise and modify children. DNA is incredibly complex and many traits aren't simply a one gene switch. What happens when we accidentally negate a gene that protects against the disease we have no experience with?
