This bombing campaign is undoubtedly the largest seen in the Middle East since the Gulf Wars, and it is growing stronger day by day.\nYet, every day and every night since the sirens wailed, people in Israel rush to seek shelter in protected spaces. Many continuously ask: If Israel’s IDF pounds them so relentlessly, how is it that Hamas militants still manage to fire rockets into Israel’s territories?\nOn the surface, this is a very reasonable question; when an enemy is under heavy fire, it's natural to assume that it would be difficult for them to conduct military operations, especially daily rocket attacks.\nOf course, the IDF is aiming to strike the enemy's arsenal with force - the idea is to restore calm to Israeli communities and weaken Hamas's military power.\nBut Hamas is not a regular army, and the Israeli Air Force is dealing with this challenge differently than one might think - and for good reasons. To understand how Hamas militants continue to launch rockets into Israel, we need to take a closer look at the organization's rocket system and how it operates.\nRocket fire from Gaza began in April 2001 and was initially based on Qassam rockets - homemade rockets with engines made from readily available chemicals like fertilizers and sugar.\nInitially, Qassam rocket launches were considered a high-quality and unique operation that required a high level of skill. The dangerous manufacturing process led to numerous workplace accidents, and getting to the appropriate launch point was a risk in itself. Hamas began to expand its rocket system in a way that bypassed the technological advantages of the IDF. Today, there are five reasons why the terrorist organization can continue to fire rockets even though Israel does not stop its operations.\nThe first reason is the layout. Hamas's rocket system is dispersed over a vast area and is built in a way that makes it impossible to pinpoint the location of each launcher. They use rocket launch pits: they dig tunnels and place rails inside, with each pit containing a rocket. The rockets are pre-aimed at specific Israeli areas. Short-range rockets are aimed at Gaza's vicinity and Ashkelon, and medium-range rockets target the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. It is a personal thing, it is a group thing, it is a cultural thing, it is a language thing, it is physiological and thru epigenetics, it influences our genetic in how it affects us and our future generations. Change, much like time, never ceases.\n\nThere are two types of social transitions, the kind that takes a bloody revolution and those that take multiple generations, at least three at a minimum if we learn from history. There are social transitions that happen during mass migration of people, and transitions that happen due to the isolation of people over long periods of time. Evolution also means change over time, and it happens no matter what, there is nothing we can do to stop it. I believe riding the waves of change, even if we tumble a bit here and there, is overall better and much preferred to arguing over its arrival until we get washed over.\n\nAcceptance is the first step towards changing our behavior, which means we need to accept our past and accept our current situation. Our past is shared across humanity, it doesn’t matter where you live or for how long. It does not matter the color of your skin, your gender, heritage, or age. There was always someone else before us, and none of us will be here in one hundred years. We were all born into an existing reality. Our past is horrible, we were never nice to other groups. It did not matter if we defined those groups by location (France vs England), by religion (Christianity vs Islam), by religious sects (Catholics vs Protestants), or any other metric - the results were usually deadly to more than a few people. None of us are free of our history, so we should accept it, own it as our shared past, and move on towards a better future.\n\n\n\n",

Greta Thunberg is not sailing around the world and everyone has forgotten about the Paris agreement. Except the actual climate didn't get the memo, and our arctic sea is melting away. Lake Ontario is so warm the algae in it has changed color and is visible from space, which is causing problems for the City of Toronto's water purification systems. None of us are protected from a global pandemic and that is a light summer shower compared to what's coming.\n\nI have been in Toronto for just over a decade, so I've researched and verified using other sources to make sure what I see is in fact real. For example, ten years ago winter was distinct. It had a start, and a finish, and long miserable middle. I remember those days vividly as a new migrant from the warm deserts, and how different they are from our current winters. Having temperature differences of over 20 degrees between one week and the next, extreme colds and unusual warmth, are some symptoms of larger changes at play. Tornado warnings in places that had none a decade ago, micro-bursts of rain in July that bring down more water in an hour as the entire season to that point, and farmers outside such radius experiencing droughts.\n\nThe climate changes our weather patterns, it affects our water, and it affects our soil. If we stay the course, we have about 50 years of arable land available, which means after that point it will be difficult to grow food. Cultivating the land differently than it is done today will help us grow better food and combat climate change.
