Éramos cinco, arrodillados en la fría colina de la montaña. El viento danzaba velozmente alrededor de nuestros cabellos. Muy a pesar del aire gélido, diminutas gotas de sudor se deslizaban por mis sienes latentes. Daba por supuesto tener una o quizá dos costillas rotas; la boca, colmada de sangre.</div>\n\n<br>\n<br>\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">Desembocamos desde una calle aledaña a la recta carretera. Al norte, se observaba una hilera de montañas de color pardo y verde. Las montañas se hallaban coronadas en sus crestas por una espesa bruma blanca. Al poniente, la llanura se extendía hacia el horizonte, donde se alzaba otra cadena montañosa. Veía el Sol a plenitud, rodeado de nubes doradas. Lo veía ocultarse cada vez un poco más cada cuando presionaba el pedal del acelerador.</div>\n<br>\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">Me sentía bien. Había tomado un par de cervezas antes de salir. Maryanka estaba a mi lado.\n Aún no terminaba de caer la noche, cuando un oficial de policía, dispuesto en una alcabala en la vía me hizo señas con su mano derecha para que aparcara el vehículo a un costado. Acto seguido, ejecuté lo ordenado por el oficial de policía, y esperé.</div> \n<br>\n\n-Ha de querer algún cigarrillo, amor – me dijo Maryanka, que despertaba de una breve siesta.\n \n-No lo sé – le dije.\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">Íbamos a bordo de un Dodge Dart Coronet negro del 71. Lo había heredado de mi padre, un alcohólico, misógino y pícaro hombrecillo. Llevábamos esperando un aproximado de cuarto de hora, cuando me dispuse a descender del vehículo a averiguar que rayos estaba pasando. Recién había andado unos pasos, cuando uno de los policías que se encontraba a escasos metros custodiando el camino, se acercó a mí.</div> \n<br>\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">-No puede abandonar el vehículo hasta que el Capitán regrese – me dijo, haciendo un ademán con una de sus manos en señal de que no continuara.</div>\n<br>\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">-¿Por qué no revisa usted mis documentos y el vehículo? – le pregunté, observando su rango por el distintivo de sus rayas en la solapa del cuello de la guerrera.</div>\n<br>\n\n-No puedo – me dijo –. Sólo el Capitán puede requisarlo. Ha sido él quien ordenó que usted detuviera su marcha.\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">Le observé. La guerrera era de color negra. Llevaba calada en sus sienes una boina del color mismo de la guerrera. Pantaloncillos negros con bolsillos a los costados. Botas de cuero. Tenía encajado al torax un chaleco antibalas oscuro, impregnado en su espaldar con las iniciales blancas F.A.E.E.S. Iba acompañado de un séquito de cuatro o cinco de sus iguales en profesión. Se diferenciaba del resto en cuanto a vestimenta, sólo por las estrellas que señalaban su jerarquía superior; y en referencia al armamento, que en lugar de tener consigo un fúsil, llevaba a nivel de la cintura, incrustada en una fornitura adjunta a una funda, un arma pequeña, tipo pistola. Pidió mis documentos de identidad, y los del vehículo. Maryanka permanecía recostada contra el asiento inmóvil del copiloto, percibiendo la escena de forma minuciosa, con sus almendrados ojos ámbar. Les hice entrega de los folios. Los papeles, estaban en manos de uno de los oficiales al mando del teniente, quien con una linterna de potencial luz blanquecina, se permitía una lectura exigida de los mismos. Al término, ladeó su cara hacia el Capitán, y le dijo:</div>\n<br>\n\n-Es él, mi Capitán .\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">-¿Está seguro, usted, de lo que dice, Oficial? – le preguntó, al tiempo que en el centro de sus más o menos pobladas cejas, nacía un surco, producto de su visible temperamento hostil.</div> \n<br>\n\n-Sí, mi Capitán, así lo manifiestan sus documentos – contestó.\n\nEl funcionario miró directamente hacia mis ojos e inicio un breve interrogatorio.\n\n-¿Cuál es su nombre? \n\nLe respondí.\n\n-¿A qué se dedica?\n\n-Soy periodista; suelo escribir.\n\n-¿Cuál es el contenido de lo que escribe?\n\n-Por regla, en su mayoría, suelen ser de contenido deportivo – mentí –, vinculados al boxeo o al béisbol.\n\n-¿Y ha logrado publicar algunos escritos? ¿En qué medios?\n\nLe dije que si, y le proporcione algunos nombres convenientes.\n\n-¿Hacia dónde se dirige?\n\n-Hacia la Capital.\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">Formuló determinadas preguntas más. Algunas intrínsecas a Maryanka; otras, por el contrario, tan vanas, que las he olvidado. Por último, me indicó que podía retirarme y seguir, que la situación estaba aclarada y que las cosas no habían resultado más que en un malentendido. Sin saber cuál pudo ser ese malentendido, le respondí que no había problema y, al notar que daban sus espaldas para regresar a sus puestos de centinela, yo a su tiempo imité lo mismo, con la intención de adentrarme en el Dodge, cuando la voz del Capitán exclamó:</div>\n<br>\n\n-Queda detenido por traición a la patria ¡Arréstenlo!",
