bodyClout is doing for the entire crypto space what Steemit did to blogging. It is creating an incentive structure around content creation and community management with the help of an Ethereum token. An ambitious project to say the least, but one that we'll keep an eye out on. We also thought that the Steemit community may be interested in this project, given its similarities to Steemit. The audience here may be well suited to judge the merits of the project. Firstly, you should [check out their website](https://clout.io/) and the [whitepaper](https://www.dropbox.com/s/1a4asxipoo89qyr/WP_new.pdf) which explains the system in more detail. In fact, since this is an ICO, if you're putting any money into the project, we strongly encourage you to read the whitepaper before parting with your hard earned money. Now back to Clout - similar to how Steemit has rewards for both content creation and curation, so does Clout. However, the system is more social media like as opposed to blogging platform like, so it can form communities around individual topics easier. The Clout team has ambitions to become the defacto crypto hub of knowledge and information, which today is spread across scores of different sites all over the internet. Will the team fulfill that mission? Only time will tell. But if you're on Steemit and understand the economics of content creation and curation and are interested in other similar projects or want to help that team in other ways with your expertise, Clout is a project to check out.

bodyGood post. I was about to post a similair thread. Only invest in ICOs if you did the best possible research you can do and really believe in the future of the project. Wetter you're a short- or long term holder you should know what you put your money in. Besides coinmarketcap.com there is: https://www.coincheckup.com I don't know any other site that gives such good inisghts in the team, the product, advisors, community, the business and the business model, etc. Check for example: https://www.coincheckup.com/coins/Ark#analysis For the Ark Detailed report.

bodyVery good article. I was about to start a similair discussion. I strongly advice people to only buy in to cryptos that have a solid background: A solid team, product, advisors, preferably VC investors, etc. Sell all cryptos that don't have this solid background. It's a waiste of money. Personally I always use: https://www.coincheckup.com Supposingly they researched every crypto coin in the scene based on: the team, the product, advisors, community, the business and the business model. They even score the coins stengths. On: https://www.coincheckup.com/coins/Bancor#analysis For a complete Bancor Indepth analysis.

body![Manila-Skyline-Makati.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYccj6pybDy2wYnjVDESjX5nLuSxWJqXs69gGhAkGpXih/Manila-Skyline-Makati.jpg) The ICO market today is very crowded, this we already know. It is hard to pick out the good signals out of the bad ones. Given the hype, I am now looking at projects that are being started by teams that have built successful projects before. Why? Because it reduces the speculative elements. If the team is good and can execute on their vision, then they automatically are much better than a completely new team because you've reduced your investment risk. Irrespective of the idea, it is the execution that is very challenging. How many people had come up with 'social media on blockchain' type ideas before Steemit actually built a product? Those are the kinds of projects I am looking to back in new ICOs. ## PawnHero Enter PawnHero. It is a company based out of the Philippines and creates an online pawn shop, so that anyone with a smartphone can pawn any asset that they have by shipping it to one centralized location. This drastically reduces operations cost including paying for the pawn shop rent, security, management, inventory, etc. In fact, the company has been so successful to scale that they charge around half of what traditional pawn shops charge, and have assets ranging from gold and diamond jewelry to scooters and paintings. All with the help of the mobile phone that is growing rapidly in Philippines and the surrounding areas of South East Asia. PawnHero is backed by some of the largest companies in the region, including China's Alibaba and Japan's Softbank. I hope my readers know both these companies - the former being the largest ecommerce site in Asia and the later being one of the largest conglomerates in technology throughout the world. These are big players with serious ambitions. They are not interested in just a more efficient pawn shop (although the market can be surprisingly large). They want to reinvent how assets are monetized. If you want to learn more about PawnHero, [Bloomberg Philippines](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IhPSBQKNUU) did a whole 25 minute segment on the company that went into all the details, from the founding vision to inventory management. You should watch that video if you're curious about the company. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IhPSBQKNUU] In a nutshell, PawnHero is a real company with real users and customers today. They are not 'just a whitepaper' idea that has become so common in the ICO world today. ## From PawnHero to the HERO Token With the experience of asset-backed loans, i.e. collateralized loans, the company wants to move towards an uncollateralized loan model. This can be a very different ball game, since the loans are not backed by anything tangible, and therefore if a default happens, you're pretty much left taking a loss. However, the company is building up user data like social media profiles, salary information, etc. and using machine learning to predict how likely people are to default, and charge appropriate interest rates. This is definitely a technology play. The region lacks a standardized rigorous credit scoring systems like in the US. I don't need to tell the readers about the market potential of South East Asia as one of the fastest economically growing regions in the world. The good thing with this token is that it is backed by a real company in the region that knows and understands local problems and has a history of working in the region creating a product and solving a local problem. This reduces implementation risk for their new project. ## The Token Remember this is a South East Asia company. The HERO token holders get up to 20% of income generated by the company, paid quarterly as dividends. This is going to be one of the few dividend paying cryptocurrency tokens that is backed by the real world economy as opposed to purely blockchain-based economies. The team is going to ICO 80% of all tokens, with a cap of 250,000 ETH for the ICO. There are bonuses for early participation. Each ETH gets you 200 HERO tokens (before bonuses). ## Resources [Check out the website here](https://herotoken.io/). bodyI've had several pseudonyms in the Bitshares community, and would still want to remain pseudonymous. Suffice to say, I've been involved since the original Protoshares design all the way to the launch of Bitshares and beyond. There are many things I liked about the project and many things that I didn't. I still believe in Bitshares though. So I was wondering if there is any community appetite on some history lessons. Starting of course to the first time Dan Larimer (and Charles Hoskinson) announced their idea - way back when Dan sported a killer beard! (Leave your comments, no need to upvote).

body[Delphi](https://delphi.markets/) is a new crypto project that aims to create a decentralized prediction marketplace. Sounds familiar? Well, it should, since there are already two other projects on Ethereum with the same value proposition - Augur and Gnosis. So what's special about Delphi? The first is how this market will play out in the real world. The Delphi team believes that the people behind a prediction market team need to be anonymous or pseudonymous. This is because many governments, most notably the United States, don't look too kindly upon prediction markets. If there is a large value of transactions taking place on these markets, then the founders may be in trouble. Given that projects like Gnosis are fairly centralized, it isn't a stretch that a determined government could shut the markets down. So Delphi is taking the approach of being an anonymous team. Obviously this raises concerns, since if the teams are anonymous, then there is much less accountability. What if they never deliver the product? That is certainly a risk that investors need to take if they put money into Delphi's ICO. We don't know if the team will deliver. But [here's a post from the team](https://medium.com/@Delphi_Markets/delphi-our-team-our-values-3fb528946ec0) so you can read about what they claim they stand for. However, a quick note about teams remaining pseudonymous/anonymous. This isn't the case with the most recent deluge of ICOs on Ethereum, but crypto in general has a large history of really successful projects developed by pseudonymous entities, all the way from Bitcoin to projects like NXT/Ardor. To the old guard, this shouldn't be too much of a concern. The recent money grab ICOs on Ethereum are hardly a year old. Projects that are ideologically driven are more likely to succeed since their incentives are not to take the money and run, being driven not too much by the money the project raises. Delphi's team belongs to this category. ## Design In terms of how Delphi will design the project, it is going to be very similar to what Gnosis has done. This means there is a generator token and a fee paying token. If you hold the generator token, you are guaranteed to get a certain percentage of the fees for the network through the fee paying token. The fee paying token is more 'market pegged' asset, similar to bitUSD on the Bitshares network. For Delphi, there is - Del - this is the generator token. You can [purchase Del on the ICO website](https://delphi.markets/address). The supply is fixed and distributed in the ICO. - Phi - this is the fee-token. The price of Phi token is pegged to $1, similar to bitUSD. The supply of Phi is unlimited, and you can get Phi tokens by locking up your Del tokens. The supply rate depends on how much the demand for Delphi's prediction markets is. This is similar to Gnosis, but with a major difference - the distribution is straightforward without the over-complicated Dutch Auction mechanics and shenanigans orchestrated by the Gnosis team, which just looks like a money-grab to anyone observing. The Del tokens are distributed in a straightforward ICO to all participants, with a 75% of the supply going out this way. Finally, the Delphi team came up with their [distributed oracle framework called Pythia](https://medium.com/@Delphi_Markets/a-glimpse-of-pythia-731df5fc7972) that will help build the system out. Check out the project [here](https://delphi.markets/).

bodyJust asking not quite sure, but isn't Bancor similar to what Steemit is? I'm asking because my understanding that people can buy your crpto currency from Bancor if they see an intrinsic value to what you offer. Isn't that kinda of similar as to what we do on Steemit, we vote people up and give them value so therefore their steemit value increase? Please clarify if I'm misunderstanding the two.

bodyI just wrote [a post](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@pedrombraz/ico-bubble) about my own view on the whole bubble thing. My point is very simple, if each one of us do not make their part, we can ruin the party. If we get enough bad examples out on the street we'll sure piss off a bunch of regulators and traditional investors, and that will likely limit the whole of crypto and blockchain economy's growth.

bodyBancor has a great pitch regarding instant smart-contract enabled token exchange. I'll approach this post from the point of view of token issuers, usually in the form of ICOs or even other methods (such as community-issued tokens). So how does the math work? Say you have an ICO and raise 10,000 ETH. Now the idea behind Bancor is that you'll be able to put a fraction of it locked into a smart contract. Say you decide on 20%. This means 20% of 10,000 ETH which is 2,000 ETH will be locked away in a smart contract. The purpose of the smart contract is to provide a fixed price for each buy and sell of the token against the reserve, i.e. ETH. For example, if your ICO token is IXX and you've issued 1,000,000 (million) tokens, then based on the ICO price, it is valued at 100 IXX = 1 ETH or the price of each IXX token is 1,000,000/10,000 = 0.01 ETH. Now, you lock up 2,000 ETH in a smart contract. This is only to provide liquidity - it should NOT be subtracted from the project valuation. This 2,000 ETH in reserve are worth a total of 2,000 * 100 = 200,000 IXX tokens based on the ICO price. Now that you have 2,000 ETH in a smart contract, you can start buying or selling IXX. Say you buy 100 ETH worth of IXX via this smart contract. This means the total smart contract balance is now 2,000 + 100 = 2100 ETH. 100 ETH, based on the current price, buys you 100 * 100 = 10,000 IXX. Here comes the interesting part. Let's calculate the new price of IXX tokens in the smart contract. What's the fair price now, after the buy? Clearly, the smart contract needs to adjust the price each time, otherwise you can simply keep getting cheaper IXX tokens from the smart contract instead of the market, and there is no benefit whatesoever (in fact it is detrimental to your project). Here's the formula now to calculate the price: Balance/(Supply*Reserve ratio). In our case, this is - 2100/(1000000 * 0.20) = 0.0105. And viola! This is where the magic happens. The original price of IXX in ETH was 0.01 and now it is 0.0105. The price has increased after the buy. As expected, it should be more expensive now to buy IXX than it was before. The exact dynamic but in reverse happens when someone wants to sell IXX for ETH from the smart contract. This will reduce the price of IXX accordingly, and we can go through the exact same calculations above. In this way, Bancor provides a continuously adjusted price for the smart contract. If many people are buying, the price increases and if many are selling, the price decreases. This is exactly like a traditional exchange dynamic of buyers and sellers setting price. However, in Bancor's case, everything is intermediated through smart contract and not central intermediaries and so there is no counterparty risk involved. It will be very interesting to see projects issue new tokens using Bancor, and have an instant source of liquidity for their tokens irrespective of whether Poloniex or Bittrex or Liqui list them or not. Also interesting would be if multiple currencies are backing the token, not just ETH (any ERC20 token will do). Finally, it would be interesting to chart out how much percentage projects will choose to keep in reserve. The Bancor ICO is soon if you're interested. [Here's the whitepaper](https://bancor.network/static/Bancor_Protocol_Whitepaper_en.pdf) with more details.

body![chk_captcha.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRQ1eod7UqzKwXuLUecsJHHYvQYbxFuvbpNWPJyJnbZ5S/chk_captcha.jpg) I recently came across the Bancor protocol and their whitepaper, and I must admit, it gave me some pause - something I haven't felt since the release of the original Bitshares whitepaper. I don't want to compare the two too much, because the use cases are different. However, just like Bitshares, Bancor works based on an arbitrage mechanism that can be exploited to keep prices stable. I admit that I like such kinds of mechanisms quite a bit, and hence this post. The [Bancor whitepaper](https://bancor.network/static/Bancor_Protocol_Whitepaper_en.pdf) does a decent job of explaining the protocol but I'll explain it more simply in this post. ## The Core Idea of Bancor At its core, Bancor is a protocol that provides liquidity to crypto-tokens even without a centralized exchange (or even a decentralized one like Bitshares). Bancor is created on Ethereum, so we'll use that in our explanation. Simply put, the Bancor protocol allows you to buy crypto-tokens for ETH or sell your crypto-tokens for ETH without having any need for an exchange, DEX, counterparties, gateways, etc. It does this by a clever pricing mechanism and a smart contract that holds a reserve of the underlying crypto (for simplicity, we'll just assume that's Ethereum). The use-case is simple - anyone looking to issue new crypto-tokens. This can be for a very small community - I could issue tokens that sell an hour of my time, for example, to a few of my friends or clients. The advantage of doing this over Bancor instead of issuing my own Ethereum-based ERC20 token, or a Bitshares asset is that there is an inherent price discovery mechanism through the smart contract which makes these tokens instantly liquid irrespective of whether an exchange lists them or not. We'll discuss the pricing mechanism and how it operates in the next section. ## Bancor Pricing Mechanism The pricing mechanism works in a way that whenever you execute a buy, i.e. convert your ETH into these crypto-tokens, the price increases. You see, there is a fixed price that is determined by the Ethereum smart contract on this conversion ratio, which is set at the onset based on how much the reserves are, what percentage of the total are in reserves, and the total number of tokens. However, this price isn't static, but dynamic. With each buy or sell, the price floats. If you buy these crypto-tokens by sending some ETH to the smart contract, the price increases. This means the next buy is more expensive for everyone. On the other hand, if you sell some of your crypto-tokens for ETH, you will get it at the stated price. However, the price decreases for everyone, so the next sell would yield fewer ETH. If there are enough buyers and sellers, then an equilibrium is quickly reached and the price stabilizes. Since this is a beginner guide, I won't cover the math of the price increase and decrease. You can find it on the whitepaper listed above. If there's demand from the community, I can cover that math in another post. ## Interaction of Bancor-based Tokens and Exchanges Things start to get really interesting when these Bancor based crypto-tokens are also listed on an exchange. Now there are two different market prices for the same token - one based on third-party external exchanges and one based on the rate implied by the smart contract. A buyer or seller can use either mechanism to buy or sell these crypto-tokens. Whenever there are two prices in the market, arbitrageurs come into play. This is similar to how bitUSD or bitBTC maintains its peg even without centralized backing - if there's deviation, arbitrageurs are incentivized to bet in the opposite direction and ultimately the pricing inefficiency goes to zero (or sustains if there are genuine differences between the two mechanisms). With the Bancor-based tokens, we can also see an interesting mix of play where one of the exchanges is a smart contract and therefore more trustworthy than a centralized exchange. I would expect the price based on the smart contract may be a little higher, just because it is more trustless than an exchange that has counterparty risk. Of course, things get even more interesting (especially if you're an arbitrageur!) if this crypto-token is also listed on Bitshares DEX! Then there is a native smart contract, a decentralized exchange, and several centralized exchanges. I also believe that due to this inherent arbitrage opportunity, the trading volume for popular Bancor-based tokens will be higher than usual. This may further provide an incentive for newer crypto projects to use the Bancor protocol to issue their tokens instead of just regular ERC20 type tokens. I think Bancor is providing an interesting play here, and some of the market mechanics are similar to how Bitshares and BitAssets work. I think the Bitshares community would like the project. Check out their [whitepaper](https://bancor.network/static/Bancor_Protocol_Whitepaper_en.pdf) and their [website](https://bancor.network/) to learn more. Let me know if there's demand for a more in-depth look at how the pricing mechanism works, or any other questions you folks may have!

\n\nI also believe that due to this inherent arbitrage opportunity, the trading volume for popular Bancor-based tokens will be higher than usual. This may further provide an incentive for newer crypto projects to use the Bancor protocol to issue their tokens instead of just regular ERC20 type tokens. \n\nI think Bancor is providing an interesting play here, and some of the market mechanics are similar to how Bitshares and BitAssets work. I think the Bitshares community would like the project. \n\nCheck out their [whitepaper](https://bancor.network/static/Bancor_Protocol_Whitepaper_en.pdf) and their [website](https://bancor.network/) to learn more. Let me know if there's demand for a more in-depth look at how the pricing mechanism works, or any other questions you folks may have!",

body## ICO Markets As a cryptocurrency investor, there are two primary markets in which you can make money: - Exchange Markets, buying and selling cryptocurrencies. - Primary Markets, or ICOs, buying tokens of cryptocurrencies before they launch. In this post, I'll discuss the latter, i.e. ICO investing. ICOs are becoming increasingly common with many crypto projects. It shouldn't come as a surprise then that many crypto investors are flocking to this area of crypto investing. ## Bull-Bear Markets However, many investors fail to realize the inherent risks in ICO investing. This is problematic, especially at the current stage. This is because many investors have not yet seen a proper bear market in ICOs and new crypto investing. Over the course of 2016, those who are new to cryptocurrencies, have only seen mostly positive results from ICO investing. It goes without saying that no market will remain a bull market. Bear markets in crypto are especially brutal, with 50% declines being the norm rather than the exception. In light of the above, I urge crypto investors to be careful with the kinds of ICO investments that they make. Investors should only look for those investments that have a high probability of an upside, with protected downside. ## Don't Follow the Hype The quickest way to lose money is to blindly follow the hype and invest in the most popular ICOs. We are already seeing a slowdown of these types of tokens. Take SingularDTV for example. It was one of the most hyped ICOs of 2016 in my opinion, and raised $7.5 million in a matter of 10 minutes. That's a huge amount by any standards. But what happened after it started trading? It lost value, and today trades at below the ICO price. You could have gotten a better deal just waiting for the secondary markets instead of ICO. Today, there are many such ICOs that are hyped. These will not necessarily return money to investors. Instead, we need to look at ICOs that are under-represented and not very well known to everyone. This way, when they gain value, you make money but not many people are joining already in the ICO. ## A Look at ARK Let's look at [ARK](https://ark.io) as an example. It has an [ICO that is ongoing](https://tec.ark.io/#ruletheworld) at the moment. It is middle of the road - not too hyped, and not too unknown either. It will likely end up raising a little over $1 million or so. That's the ballpark that normal investors should aim for. If it is too obscure, you don't know the team and others don't trust it, and it might be very risky. If it is too high, the returns after the ICO will usually prove to be in adequate. If ARK reaches the level of SingularDTV, then you're already likely getting 8-10x your investment. That's a pretty good return already by all measures. The point is, you should always look for higher upside and protected downside. The higher the upside potential, the lower your risk of investment. The downside is usually protected by other investors. ARK fits that narrative nicely. Of course, the important thing to note is that the project actually has the upside potential. ARK checks off the boxes - it uses delegated proof of stake, so no mining inflation required. It has a professionally written whitepaper. It has a dedicated team that is already working with other projects like Lisk. Then of course there are the unique values - Unique Value Propositions. For ARK, it is mainly the smart bridge technology that can connect different blockchains. If this succeeds as the designers envision, then it can be a gamechanger in crypto, and the you're talking about 25-50x instead of 10x. This is the upside potential that may or may not be realized, but you play your odds to the upside rather than the downside.
