| title | Steemit winter update:2017 reflection |
| body | In this post, we want to bring you up to speed on what is happening inside Steemit, as well as give you our perspective on the successes (and failures) of the past year, let you know what we see as our mission going forward, and provide some insight into what we have planned. Steemit’s Vision and Mission Through our vision of empowering entrepreneurs to tokenize the internet, our primary roles in the Steem ecosystem are providing the community with software enhancements to the Steem blockchain, modular framework applications made up of components that can be leveraged by application developers and inspiration through these platforms to entrepreneurial end-users. We believe we must build in ways that create as many opportunities — and catalyze as many amazing Steem-based entrepreneurs and communities — as possible. With more than a dozen self-sustaining user-oriented applications (such as Busy.org, D.Tube and Uptopian.io) already integrated, Steem has more widely used applications than any other blockchain. There are more tools coming to spur adoption of Steem much faster, such as Steem’s Smart Media Tokens and Steemit’s Communities. Because of these developments, as well as the active Witnesses, community-oriented developers, and the platform’s track record - we believe there will be more than 100,000 entrepreneurs of meaningful standing building businesses on Steem within five years. Our goal is to deliver the tools and interest that crystallizes this future — one rich with opportunity for people to build their business on Steem. 2017 a year of growth 2017 was a year of growth: growth of the applications building on the Steem platform, boon of its currency STEEM, expansion of the Steem community, and development of the Steemit organization. It is exciting to see that the price of STEEM has risen by more than 5000% to over $4.00 since the $0.0691 low back in March. Steem has attracted hundreds of thousands of new members, many applications have seen 1000%+ growth, and our portion of this ecosystem, steemit.com, attracts millions of unique active visitors each month. 2017: What we did right Scaling In 2017 (and early 2018), we dedicated massive resources to scaling — more than we had anticipated. This took a significant amount of time away from feature development, but we feel it was time well spent, because it lays the foundation for us to grow the platform significantly larger, in a way that is economically scalable for exchanges and developers. TONS of new applications We have seen massive growth in the number of third-party applications built on top of the Steem blockchain that are now flourishing. This includes Busy, DLive, DMania, DSound, DTube, Utopian.io, Vessel, and many more! We are very excited to see the innovation coming from our developer community, and we are looking forward to seeing a lot of new applications in the coming year. Free image hosting Free image hosting and an easy to use interface was added to steemit.com, so that users can quickly upload their images directly into the posting editor as they are creating their content. Delegated Steem Power The blockchain rules were updated to allow users to delegate Steem Power to one another. This has allowed large stakeholders to share their influence with other members of the community, so that their stake can be used by others to benefit the platform. As a result, entirely new businesses have been created that provide new opportunities for users to bootstrap their presence on Steem. Multiple Beneficiaries The change to allow multiple beneficiaries for a post/comment has provided a means for application developers to build on top of Steem in a way that provides a use-based revenue stream. This will be an essential feature going forward, as it will allow many new businesses to form on Steem. Linear rewards The change to a linear reward distribution has ensured that the impact of each user’s vote on the rewards pool is directly proportional to their Steem Power (i.e. their stake in the platform). Users now feel more empowered, and they can see the direct correlation between the amount of Steem Power they have and the strength of their vote. Condenser improvements Many improvements made to the condenser/steemit.com website make it more attractive and improve the user experience. This includes a new design, multi-language support, night mode, and many other enhancements. We have many more improvements in the works (such as notifications 2.0), but a lot of the larger improvements are on hold until after Hivemind and other back-end services are ready to support them. We are happy with the progress so far, but many more changes are planned for 2018. Steem Developer Portal The launch of the Steem Developer Portal has laid the foundation for a centralized set of documentation, tutorials, and onboarding materials for the Steem API and core client libraries. The portal will continue to evolve in 2018 (with better everything), as we expect this to be a critical tool for fulfilling our commitment to a quality development experience. Steem software open source We deeply value freedom and innovation, which is why we changed the Steem license to the MIT open-source license. This gives developers and entrepreneurs in the community the freedom to use the software we create for whatever they want, which we believe will maximize innovation and growth for the platform and ecosystem. Steem Park History was made on July 16, 2017, when the first public work exclusively funded by cryptocurrency was erected in the Herbert von King Park in Brooklyn, New York. Improving signups We have made multiple updates to our sign-up process, which will improve the onboarding experience for new users while preventing abuse by bad actors. There have been a few bumps, but the trend is strongly upward for security and overall experience. Signup and login continue to be a focus, and we are actively working on further improvements. Updated whitepaper and bluepaper A new whitepaper was released, which is now in sync with the current version of the blockchain. We also released a new “bluepaper” designed to be a helpful guide to our protocol that is comprehensible to the widest range of people. Updated steem.io The steem.io website is one of the main sources of information for the Steem blockchain and STEEM currency. This was updated to ensure it presented accurate and up-to-date information. It will continue to evolve in 2018. SteemFest2 SteemFest2 was amazing! It was great to connect with so many great Steemians in person and discuss our plans and vision. We got a lot of valuable feedback from community members and are integrating many of the suggestions we received. The ability for so many individuals from across the world to come together and experience an event like this is something that makes Steem unique across the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Expanded exchange listings We are working hard to get STEEM listed on as many exchanges as possible. One example: STEEM was recently added to the fastest-growing cryptocurrency exchange, Binance.com. Team restructure / hiring We have spent a lot of time building an all-star team. As many of you know from working in organizations of your own, recruiting A+ people is not an easy process, and progress often has to slow before it can speed up again. We are privileged as an organization to afford A+ talent, and culturally we’ve never been more energetic and creative since setting our bar so high. We are thrilled to highlight several of our new talented team members in the “Steemit Team” section below. Announcement of SMTs SMTs are going to be one of the main tools that will allow entrepreneurs to interface with the Steem blockchain in a way that provides them with economic incentives for building their applications and improving the platform. SMTs will also provide a mechanism for communities to distribute token rewards to their members, with influence that is proportional to the distribution of their SMT. 2017: What we didn’t do right Roadmap We have not delivered on several of the items we included in our 2017 Roadmap. We were a young start-up that failed to know what we didn’t know. Growth of Steem surprised even us, and scaling required more resources than we had anticipated. After gathering feedback from developers and entrepreneurs, we also made the difficult decision to switch focus mid-year to new projects like SMTs, which, while not in the roadmap, we are convinced will increase the value of the Steem blockchain to entrepreneurs by orders of magnitude. We apologize for falling short of our stated objectives, but we believe our decisions will greatly enhance the success of our vision in the years to come. Mobile We did a lot of work on a mobile application, but it just isn’t where we want it to be. We want to put out the best blockchain-based, component-oriented, modularly tooled products in the world. After a year in operation, steemit.com and the other amazing Steem-based applications like D.Tube, Utopian.io, DLive, etc. are the only blockchain-based applications that ordinary people use. Right now, our mobile application just is not up to snuff. We’re not abandoning it, but we are not going to release it until we are satisfied that it meets our quality standards. It may take us some time to get this right and to ensure that, ultimately, the project is a success. Communication We have not done a good job of keeping the community informed of our work. We apologize for this. We know we need to improve on this, and we will be making many changes to our communication strategy in 2018. Steemit Team Going into 2018, we are critically focused on bolstering our core competencies in ways that enable building a sustainable and scalable organization that empowers our projects and the Steem community of users, developers, and entrepreneurs. Much of this goal begins by bringing in great people at the top, and we have assembled a world-class management team. With this team we continue to recruit more talent across product, engineering, ops, and advocacy. Today, we are happy to introduce Harry Schmidt (@goldibex), formerly the Director of Engineering at The Information, and VP of Engineering with Casetext, as our CTO. Harry has taken on full accountability and responsibility for building the greatest engineering force possible, already having dramatically improved our engineering organization’s agility and ability to ship with regularity and precision. With that, we’ve continued to build out the engineering organization in a completely distributed manner. Distributed engineering is an underrated strategy for building companies with long-term missions, and thus far it has allowed us to recruit All-Star engineering talent no matter where they live in the world. We also have a new CFO, Randy Baker, an industry veteran with experience serving as a CFO for a private space exploration company that counted SpaceX as one of its customers, as well as experience running his own successful start-ups. Pon Kattera (@pkattera) is our Head of Design and Interim Head of Product. Pon has been hard at work, taking the design of steemit.com to the next level. He is working closely with Harry to ensure that our releases are developed with agility and turn out as beautiful as they are secure. (Little-known fact: Pon also attended SteemFest #1.) Many of you may know Andrew Levine (@andrarchy), who has served as our Community Liaison. We introduce him now as our Director of Content. We have given him the authority — and the mandate — to improve our communication with the community and develop an effective content publication strategy. It is also our pleasure to introduce Christi White as our Head of People. Christi brings a depth of experience building technology companies, and we’re thrilled with the impact she is making on our organization as we continue to build our all-star team across product, engineering, ops, and advocacy. Our Board of Directors is more involved than ever. The Board comprises Gregory Wexler, a successful serial entrepreneur lending expertise gained from years spent in the industry; Ben (@theoretical), software architect of Steem and chief software architect of the Smart Media Tokens protocol, whose wisdom and insights are invaluable; Chris Padovano of Decentralized Legal, a pioneering legal expert in the blockchain world; and there’s me — Ned Scott, CEO of Steemit — privileged to work with such a diverse group of talents. We have also hired several new blockchain developers, front-end developers to work on the condenser (steemit.com) website, as well as other static sites like steem.io and developers.steem.io, and back-end developers to work on our tools such as Jussi, Hivemind, and Steem Blockchain Data Services (SBDS). In addition, we are in the process of building out our content and advocacy teams. Finally, we've developed new positions such as Developer Advocate, and have begun the process of creating an independent non-profit organization to support even more positions dedicated to supporting developers and entrepreneurs leveraging Steem and Smart Media Tokens. What’s Coming in 2018 Right now, our top priorities are blockchain scalability (AppBase), Communities (Hivemind), effortless onboarding (sign up + Hardfork 20), and Smart Media Tokens (SMTs). So much progress has already been made, and we are working around the clock to deliver them as soon as we can. We still can’t give a precise completion date because we recently reorganized our entire development process around agile methodology. The changes we’ve made will enable us to forecast more accurately how long it takes us to launch new features, but only after we’ve used the process for enough time. Last year one of the mistakes we made was being far too precise in our roadmap. Priorities change, and timelines for developing software when dealing with disruptive technology is often difficult to predict. Going forward we will not be giving specific dates for changes that are not yet completed - to give ourselves the flexibility to shift priorities if necessary, and to take the time needed to deliver a quality product. We will do our best to keep you informed of our plans and priorities, so you know what to expect. We know what big features Steemians want: communities, spam management, modular application components for simple and fast development, a great sign-up flow, Smart Media Tokens... and they want it yesterday. That’s where we’re focusing our attention. We have many other exciting projects planned too, and are reviewing all the suggestions made by the community for #roadmap2018. We look forward to updating you as these projects unfold. Thank you so much for sticking with us through this volatile year. Steemit is nothing without you and the developers and entrepreneurs building Steem apps. We believe 2018 is going to be a benchmark year for Steem, and we are glad to have you with us on this wild ride Ned and Team |

"body": "\n\n\n\nIn this post, we want to bring you up to speed on what is happening inside Steemit, as well as give you our perspective on the successes (and failures) of the past year, let you know what we see as our mission going forward, and provide some insight into what we have planned.\n\nSteemit’s Vision and Mission\nThrough our vision of empowering entrepreneurs to tokenize the internet, our primary roles in the Steem ecosystem are providing the community with software enhancements to the Steem blockchain, modular framework applications made up of components that can be leveraged by application developers and inspiration through these platforms to entrepreneurial end-users. We believe we must build in ways that create as many opportunities — and catalyze as many amazing Steem-based entrepreneurs and communities — as possible.\n\nWith more than a dozen self-sustaining user-oriented applications (such as Busy.org, D.Tube and Uptopian.io) already integrated, Steem has more widely used applications than any other blockchain. Our goal is to deliver the tools and interest that crystallizes this future — one rich with opportunity for people to build their business on Steem.\n\n2017 a year of growth\n2017 was a year of growth: growth of the applications building on the Steem platform, boon of its currency STEEM, expansion of the Steem community, and development of the Steemit organization. It is exciting to see that the price of STEEM has risen by more than 5000% to over $4.00 since the $0.0691 low back in March. Steem has attracted hundreds of thousands of new members, many applications have seen 1000%+ growth, and our portion of this ecosystem, steemit.com, attracts millions of unique active visitors each month.\n\n2017: What we did right\nScaling\nIn 2017 (and early 2018), we dedicated massive resources to scaling — more than we had anticipated. This took a significant amount of time away from feature development, but we feel it was time well spent, because it lays the foundation for us to grow the platform significantly larger, in a way that is economically scalable for exchanges and developers.\n\nTONS of new applications\nWe have seen massive growth in the number of third-party applications built on top of the Steem blockchain that are now flourishing. | title | Liverpool's Salah credits manager Klopp for goal rush |
| body | (Reuters) - Liverpool's top scorer Mohamed Salah has credited manager Juergen Klopp's tactics for his prolific form, saying a change in his playing position has helped him score more goals. Salah has netted 30 goals in 36 matches across all competitions in his debut season at Liverpool, and is the league's second highest goalscorer with 22 goals to his name, one fewer than Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane. "With the boss here, I play a little bit closer to the goal, more so than at any other club or more than any of my other coaches have asked me to," Salah told Liverpool's official matchday programme. "So I am always in front of the goal to give me the opportunity to score. The manager is always telling me to stay close to the goal in training. "I don't want to say too much because we still have a long way to go in the season and I don't want to give too much away. But yes, it's something we have worked on in the training sessions." The 25-year-old's exploits have led Liverpool to third in the league standings and almost guaranteed of a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 5-0 victory over Porto in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The Egyptian has also taken the second highest number of shots in the league with 103 and is eager to be more clinical. "You cannot score 10 goals from 10 balls - that's impossible and I know that I have missed many chances too this season. But I am trying to improve," Salah added. "I am always trying to see my weaknesses and then work on them and I am always trying to score in different ways. "The coaches help me so much to do that and I also work hard alone after the training sessions." Liverpool host West Ham United in the league on Saturday. The manager is always telling me to stay close to the goal in training.\n\n\"I don't want to say too much because we still have a long way to go in the season and I don't want to give too much away. But yes, it's something we have worked on in the training sessions.\"\n\nThe 25-year-old's exploits have led Liverpool to third in the league standings and almost guaranteed of a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 5-0 victory over Porto in the first leg of their last-16 tie.\n\nThe Egyptian has also taken the second highest number of shots in the league with 103 and is eager to be more clinical.\n\n\"You cannot score 10 goals from 10 balls - that's impossible and I know that I have missed many chances too this season. But I am trying to improve,\" Salah added.\n\n\"I am always trying to see my weaknesses and then work on them and I am always trying to score in different ways.\n\n\"The coaches help me so much to do that and I also work hard alone after the training sessions.\"\n\nLiverpool host West Ham United in the league on Saturday.\n\n\nRead more at https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/football/2018/02/20/liverpools-salah-credits-manager-klopp-for-goal-rush/#GSE5GP7RUd4GOi7S.99",

The Evolution Championship Series has announced its tournament line-up for 2018, with new release Dragon Ball FighterZ making the final cut, while Marvel vs Capcom Infinite has been dropped. Until now, the crossover fighting game franchise has been present in one form or another, starting with Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes at EVO 2002 up until Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, whose six-year run lasted from 2012 to 2017. But in 2018, there's no room for the series' latest entry, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, which was released in September 2017 to an uncharacteristically lukewarm reception. By contrast, a pre-release edition of Dragon Ball FighterZ was introduced to the fighting game community at last year's EVO, and was enthusiastically received both then and upon its January 2018 retail debut. Its inclusion means that Japanese studio Arc System Works has achieved the rare status of creating three of the main stage tournament's eight titles, having also developed BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2. Before now, the studio most commonly associated with a triple- or quadruple-bill was Capcom itself; Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Street Fighter II Turbo and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were all selected for EVO 2009 (Bandai Namco obtained triple-billing at EVO 2016 thanks to Pokkén Tournament, a variation on Tekken 7, and its collaboration with Sora Ltd in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U). At EVO 2018, Capcom's Street Fighter franchise continues on as an ever-present courtesy of January's Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition update. Nintendo community favourites Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee, the latter of which has been around even longer than EVO, also make a return, as does NetherRealm's superhero punch-up Injustice 2. Of the eight main stage games, five will be featured in EVO's last-day Arena finals, those being Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Marvel vs. Capcom could still make it into EVO in one form or another, as side events are yet to be announced. The EVO 2018 World Finals take place Aug 3-5 in Las Vegas. |

Melee, the latter of which has been around even longer than EVO, also make a return, as does NetherRealm's superhero punch-up Injustice 2. \n\nOf the eight main stage games, five will be featured in EVO's last-day Arena finals, those being Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. \n\nMarvel vs. Capcom could still make it into EVO in one form or another, as side events are yet to be announced. \n\nThe EVO 2018 World Finals take place Aug 3-5 in Las Vegas.",

But the opening of Novotel Hotel Taiping on April 28 last year has changed the food scene and upped the food game in the region for the better. Located strategically in the heart of the town, the 197-room hotel caters to both business and leisure travellers. The four-star international hotel managed by Accorhotel is already drawing rave reviews for its delicious yet affordable international and Asian cuisine. image: https://content.thestar.com.my/smg/settag/name=lotame/tags=Fatin_GSC_Insight_ALL,all,tsol The Lamb Shepherd’s Pie, a traditional English favourite, is specially made with seasoned cubes of lamb. The meaty, savoury, comfort-food classic is enhanced with mixed vegetables, buttery mashed pumpkin, and a traditional gravy. Seafood and burger lovers will definitely want to try the Fish Burger, which consists of a lightly crumbed tilapia fish fillet, a slice of cheddar cheese and a house coleslaw of lettuce, onion and tomato. The burger comes with a side of potato chips and tartar sauce. No set meal would be complete without a pasta dish and this menu consists of two options. The first is the spicy Seafood Spaghetti Aglio Olio, made with a seafood medley of prawns, mussels, squid and mushrooms and seasoned with garlic and chilli flakes. The second is the Asian inspired Spicy Salted Egg Spaghetti with Smoked Duck. The freshly cooked spaghetti is tossed in a salted egg yolk sauce infused with curry leaves, chopped chilli and other seasonings. The dish is then topped with delicious slices of smoked duck. For a town famous for its chicken rice, it stands to reason that this would also be on the menu. The Char Siew BBQ Chicken Rice has steamed rice served with slices of marinated chicken baked with an Asian barbecue sauce and garnished with chopped spring onions. The dish is accompanied by bok choy cooked in soy sauce and topped with fried shallots. The Teow Chew Braised Duck with Rice is another value-for-money dish that is comforting and delicious. Slices of traditional braised duck, boiled eggs and cubed bean curd are served in soy sauce accompanied with steamed rice and bok choy. If you love fried rice, then you have to try the Salted Fish Fried Rice. The seafood-inspired dish consists of rice fried with salted fish, prawns, eggs, kailan and beansprouts, topped with enoki mushroom tempura and served with pieces of fried chicken, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber, salad leaves and prawn crackers. Two noodle dishes round up the Asian inspired section of the menu. Fans of beef noodles should try the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. Slow-cooked tender beef brisket is infused in spicy beef broth, served with egg noodles, mushrooms and sliced radish and carrots. The second noodle dish is the Crispy Egg Noodle with Seafood. An egg-based broth of prawns, squid, fish cakes, Chinese cabbage, carrots, mushrooms and broccoli is poured over crispy fried egg noodles and served immediately. A special inclusion is the popular Mexican dish Chicken Quesadillas. Flour Tortillas are stuffed with shredded chicken, onions and cheese and served with a house salad, potato chips and a fresh tomato salsa. All set meals come with a sago gula Melaka dessert and a chilled drink. The set meal is priced at RM25 nett and is available for lunch and dinner throughout the year. Thanks for reading |

| title | Golf - Woods misses cut at Riviera after eight bogeys |
| body | (Reuters) - A struggling Tiger Woods failed to make the cut at the Genesis Open in California on Friday as he had eight bogeys in a round of five-over-par 76. The disappointing play left the 14-times major champion at six-over 148, four strokes over the projected cut of +2. "I've just got to play more tournaments," said Woods, making his second start of the PGA Tour season after a year-long absence following back surgery. Britain's Graeme McDowell and American Patrick Cantlay shared the clubhouse lead at seven-under 135. American Sam Saunders also was at seven-under through 15 holes with countryman Ryan Moore another stroke back after a 68. Bad light forced play to be abandoned with about 20 players still to finish their second rounds. They will return on Saturday to finish. Still troubled by his driving and putting, Woods made only three birdies during his second round and had more bogeys than scores of par. Despite his problems, the former world number one committed to play in next week's Honda Classic in Florida, marking the first time in three years he has entered tournaments on back-to-back weeks. "I need some tournament rounds," Woods said of the event near his Florida home. Despite the problems, Woods said he believed he was progressing in his comeback. "I haven't played golf in years," he said. "I'm starting to come back and it's going to take a little time. I am progressing, I'm starting to get a feel for tournament golf again. I just need to clean up my rounds." Woods' troubles began on the front nine and went downhill when he had birdies around a bogey at the fourth hole before three bogeys in four holes from the sixth left him at two-over. A birdie at 10 appeared to give him fresh hope, but it did not last. "I thought I could pump a drive down there at 11 and get to it with an iron and turn the tide around and play a good solid back nine," Woods said. "But I didn't do it." Three successive bogeys and another at 16 followed, wiping out any hope of salvaging the round. Poor putting did not help. "Today was the first day I felt bad with a putter this year," Woods said. "I didn't feel very good when I was warming up about putting." Thanks for reading |

| title | Madrid crisis deepens with defeat by Villarreal, Atletico and Valencia win |
| body | MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid's struggles showed no signs of easing on Saturday as the champions slumped to a second La Liga defeat in three games which increased pressure on coach Zinedine Zidane. Beaten 1-0 by Villarreal and with their title hopes in total disarray on a rain swept Saturday, Zidane's men trudged off the sodden pitch with jeers ringing around the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Zidane's side dominated the game but succumbed to an 87th minute strike from Pablo Fornals, who chipped over goalkeeper Keylor Navas on the rebound after a lightning quick counterattack, giving Villarreal their first ever win at the Bernabeu in 19 visits in all competitions. Real remain fourth in the Liga standings on 32 points and are only one point and one place above Villarreal and trail Atletico Madrid by 10 points after their city rivals won 1-0 away to Eibar thanks to a solitary strike by Kevin Gameiro. Valencia clung on to beat Deportivo La Coruna 2-1 away to tighten their grip on third place, moving eight points above Madrid although Zidane's side have a game in hand. They could fall a gaping 19 points behind runaway leaders Barcelona if Ernesto Valverde's side beat Real Sociedad on Sunday. "We don't deserve this, we think we played well but the ball just didn't want to go in for us and I cannot explain why," Zidane told reporters. "We then couldn't prevent them counter attacking us and it's really tough on the players." Real's slim chances of getting back into the title race after their 3-0 defeat by Barcelona before Christmas had faded further with last week's 2-2 draw away to Celta Vigo and, coupled with the persistent rain, there was little enthusiasm for the game at the Bernabeu, which was three-quarters full. The home side began brightly as Gareth Bale had a goal correctly ruled offside and Ronaldo hit the woodwork twice. Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo tipped away a stinging distance strike from outside the area from Marcelo with little more than half an hour on the clock. Madrid also had a penalty appeal waved away when visiting defender Alvaro Gonzalez appeared to block a shot from Bale with his arm, while Asenjo made his best save of an outstanding overall display by thwarting Ronaldo from close range on the stroke of halftime. REAL DESPERATION Villarreal slowly grew into the game as the second half progressed and capitalised on Real's desperation to try and win the game by outnumbering Zidane's side on the break after clearing Toni Kroos's corner. "We knew that we could make history today and we always believed it," said Villarreal coach Javi Calleja. "Madrid have many virtues but we thought that at this moment of the season and playing at home they might make more mistakes." Second-placed Atletico survived a potentially tricky trip to Eibar without the suspended Diego Costa, with Gameiro knocking in a pass from Antoine Griezmann in the 27th minute. Valencia went ahead at Deportivo with the help of a tremendous goalkeeping blunder from Ruben Martinez, who let Goncalo Guedes's blunt shot through his hands and between his legs in the 37th minute. Spain international Rodrigo Moreno struck the second in the 64th with the help of a huge deflection off Depor defender Pablo Mosquera. The hosts pulled one back in the 88th minute through Florin Andone and Adrian Lopez had a gilt-edged chance to level in stoppage time but smashed the ball into the stands. At the other end of the table, basement club Las Palmas were hammered 6-0 by Liga debutants Girona, while 19th-placed Malaga sacked hapless coach Michel a day after Friday's 1-0 defeat at Getafe, a fourth consecutive loss in the league. |

| body | EIBAR (Reuters) - Barcelona got back to winning ways on Saturday after two consecutive draws, earning a 2-0 victory at Eibar thanks to goals from Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba to move 10 points clear at the top of the Liga standings. Suarez latched on to a pass from Lionel Messi to dribble round the home side's goalkeeper and slot into an empty net in the 16th minute, while Messi hit the woodwork later in the game, as did Eibar's Fabian Orellana, who was sent off with 25 minutes remaining for a second booking. Eibar coach Jose Luis Mendilibar was also dismissed later for angry protests against referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez. Elsewhere in La Liga Valencia produced a quick-fire turnaround to win 2-1 at basement club Malaga and ensure they will end the weekend in third place, while Sevilla warmed up for their Champions League game with Manchester United next week by beating Las Palmas 2-1. At Eibar Messi's incisive ball to Suarez put him level with Real Madrid great Michel as the joint-top assist provider in the history of La Liga, with 147 goal-creating passes. Messi was also involved when Barca finally made the most of their extra man in the 88th minute, running towards goal and into Eibar goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic, allowing Alba to sidefoot the loose ball into the near corner with his weaker right foot. Alba's goal, which he celebrated by sucking his thumb in dedication to his new-born son, sealed Barca's first win in three games after surprise successive draws against Espanyol and Getafe, which had cut their lead at the top of the league from 11 to seven points. The hard-fought win takes Barca on to 62 points for the season, 10 above nearest challengers Atletico Madrid, who play Athletic Bilbao at home on Sunday. Champions Real visit Real Betis the same day. Barca's victory also stretched their unbeaten run in the league to 31 games across two seasons, matching a club record set by Pep Guardiola's side in April 2011. "It was very important for us to win today after the two draws," said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde. "They (Eibar) pushed us very hard and played at a very high level. We struggled in the second half and took a long time to get into their area but it was easier once they went a man down." Valverde fielded a full-strength starting 11 despite the fact his side face a vital Champions League last-16 first-leg game at Chelsea on Tuesday, and he started veteran midfielder Andres Iniesta over record signing Philippe Coutinho, even though the Brazilian is cup-tied from European games. SLICE OF FORTUNE Nigerian forward Brown Ideye gave struggling Malaga a surprise lead in the 27th minute against Marcelino's side and they looked on course for a first league win since Dec. 10 but Francis Coquelin equalised in the 80th minute and captain Dani Parejo netted the winner from the penalty spot in the 85th. Sevilla warmed up for Wednesday's clash with Manchester United by winning 2-1 away to relegation-fighting Las Palmas to go fifth, provisionally, in the standings. Vincenzo Montella's side marched into a two-goal lead through strikes from Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia either side of halftime. The home team pulled a goal back through Jonathan Calleri's converted penalty and Sevilla enjoyed a huge slice of fortune when Alejandro Galvez scored for Las Palmas in injury time but his chipped goal was incorrectly ruled offside. Deportivo La Coruna suffered a second straight defeat under Clarence Seedorf, the Dutch coach's side losing 1-0 at Alaves to a scorching strike from former Barcelona loanee Munir El Haddadi. Deportivo remain second-bottom of the standings on 17 points while Alaves move 10 clear of the relegation zone. Malaga remain rooted to the bottom of the table on 13. |

| body | LOS ANGELES—Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux are separating. The couple says in a statement released through her publicist Thursday that the decision to split “was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year.” The couple says they are making the announcement publicly “in an effort to reduce any further speculation.” “Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly,” says the statement released by longtime Aniston publicist Stephen Huvane. “Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.” Aniston and Theroux say they are “two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.” Aniston and Theroux were engaged in August of 2012 and married in August of 2015. They have no children. Aniston, 49, was previously married to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005. Thanks for reading |

| title | True Life Story! My Romantic Story with my Teacher |
| body | The Beginning March 12th, 1994 [Friday] The day I first saw her in front of Principal's Office and it feels like it was just yesterday. My friends and I been the Senior Prefect and the Assistant are keeping the late comers at bay to pick up the litters. I stand behind the block of J.S.S. 3A looking at the wonderful woman, she is cute, cool, charming, captivating and cinderelling classic in her late 20s. Who is she? I tapped the Senior Prefect in amazed mood. The new English Language teacher he replied. I smiled as if have just won a lottery. The Romanticism On that same day, I could not think or reason in any dimension other than the stunning angel have sighted. Sometimes I smiles for no reason, other times I put on imaginary actions and unexplainable circumstances. On the same day I got home, its a total different day my parent, brother and sister had noticed the sudden change of mood; all house chores were thoroughly done without being lazy like before. On Monday morning, she step into our class like a morning sunshine greeted us and ask each one of us to introduce ourselves by our name. At my turn, I smiled consecutively to pronounce my name, she was wondering why the smiled but later on pay no attention little did she know its more than just a smile. Suspicion The Suspicious activities started four months after, whenever she saw me or our eyes gazed I always put on the lovely smile. She make an enquiry from the Class-Captain about my attitude. Our class captain told me she asked him, ls that how you always smiled? and I told her No, that he does not know why' he said. I continued with my smiling face until she approached me and queried reasons behind my smiling attitude. I said nothing. But I was certain that she knew I was not saying the truth, whenever im in class and I smiled at the gazed of our eyes, she smiled back. Rise of Affection! My adventure of smiling began to take a new turn, I never tried to conceal my affection as well as to hide my intuitive reasons of my smile and yet how can I expressed myself of the way I feel. My smiling charm had worked to the peak that whenever she came into our class, she always wanted to see my face and when I smiled she also smile back. This have caused lot of confusion among my colleagues they are wondering what could have happened between us two. However, this continued on and on with no one to give accurate reasons of either my smiles or hers. Mission Fulfilled After I graduated from the High School and we do not see for a longer time. March 12th 2010 [Friday] in Abuja, I met her at one of my friends birthday I was looking at her from the distance she hadn't noticed me at where I was standing. I approached her with a simple hello and I smiled at the instance, she looked for some minutes trying to reconnect with my facial appearance as soon as she got to know. She gave me a big hug, smiled and happy; with several hours of discussion; she finally asked why the smiles back then. I replied with a big courage as a man I fell in love with you on that very day. She busted into a big laugh and said awww now im married, but with a courage and truthful mind of my words. I receive a romantic kiss. Its a true story of what I ventured... |

| title | Shaun White contemplating both winter and summer Olympic future |
| body | The cab double cork 1440, the trick that won Shaun White the gold medal at these Olympics and nearly killed him four months earlier, requires snowboarders to gain enough acceleration up the 22-foot halfpipe wall so they can fly off the lip and complete two head-over-heels inverted spins while performing two 360-degree rotations. It requires speed. It requires strength. It requires savvy. But beyond that, it requires perfect timing to land squarely on your board racing back down the wall of icy snow. White, as much as anyone then, should understand the concept of a safe, clean exit. The trick was first landed by Switzerland's Iouri Podladtchikov, who nicknamed it the YOLO flip. That's an acronym for: You Only Live Once. And that should tell White something about the direction of his sport, and about the direction of his career. Skateboarding, finally, has been added to the Summer Olympics, and he has talked openly about competing in 2020 in Tokyo. He has options. "I assumed at some point in my lifetime, skateboarding would get in the Olympics," White, 31, said a few hours after winning his third halfpipe gold in spectacular fashion, nailing back-to-back double cork 1440s on his final run. "I'm just happy it's come at a time where I feel physically and mentally capable of actually competing and pursing that goal and dream. "I'll have to make a hard decision at that point, to be at the top of the game in snowboarding and then decide all of a sudden to let my competitors have two years of practice on me while I pursue skateboarding, and then try to come back for the China Olympics (in 2022). Because that's something still on my radar. It's a big decision." It shouldn't be. There are the obvious reasons. He was a skateboarder before a snowboarder, a regular at San Diego and North County skate parks, noticed and mentored by the legendary Tony Hawk at age 9. The first person to win medals at both Winter and Summer X Games. The only person to win a Winter and Summer Dew Cup. And there's this legacy-enticing morsel: Only 136 people have ever competed in a Winter and Summer Olympics. Only five have medaled in both. Only one, Eddie Eagan in boxing in 1920 and four-man bobsled in 1932, has golds from both. The real reason, though, is none of the above. The real reason is YOLO. Not the flip. The mentality. Snowboard's halfpipe is accelerating at a frightening rate, imbibed by its soaring popularity, oblivious to the place it is heading. Even White admits: "With progression there's going to be consequences, and unfortunately it can come in the form of something like Kevin Pearce." Pearce is a former snowboarder from Vermont who crashed on the halfpipe in Park City, Utah, a few months before the 2010 Olympics. His head slammed into the icy wall, knocking him unconscious and condemning him to a hospital bed for a month followed by four more at a Denver rehab clinic specializing in traumatic brain injuries. Pearce was attempting a basic cab double cork, without the two 360-degree spins. The winning run at halfpipe's Olympic debut in 1998, by Switzerland's Gian Simmen, featured nothing harder than 720s, or two revolutions. By 2002, Ross Powers won with a frontside 900 (2½). In 2006, White did a pair of 1080s (three). In 2010, he unveiled his trademark double McTwist 1260 (3½). In 2014, Podladtchikov – iPod for short – spun four times above the pipe with the YOLO 1440. In 2018, White connected back-to-back double cork 1440s to edge Japan's Ayumu Hirano, who two weeks earlier became the first person to land a pair of 1440s and did it again in his second run at the Olympics. Podladtchikov wasn't there to defend his title because, a few minutes before Hirano made history at the X Games last month, he face-planted on a landing and lay motionless in the snow for 10 minutes before medics felt it safe to transport him to the hospital. He flew to Korea, tried to practice, and withdrew. "Participating in the Olympic Games," he said in a statement, "would pose a great risk to my health … I can say for sure (it) is in no way safe and responsible." Then, in the second run of the final, Japan's Yuto Totsuka smashed onto the edge of the lip after soaring 16 feet above it, violently pitched forward and slid lifelessly to the bottom of the pipe. He was loaded into an orange sled and whisked off the mountain as an eerie silence engulfed the crowd at Phoenix Snow Park. (He reportedly suffered a hip injury but escaped with no broken bones.) Hirano, who would win silver, lacerated his liver and tore knee ligaments in a hellacious crash last March that left him bed-ridden for a month. White himself crashed while training the 1440 last fall in New Zealand and needed 62 stitches (not to mention the five days in ICU after his lungs began filling with blood). "You get up and learn from it, you know," said White, who admits he doesn't watch the rest of the competition so he won't get spooked. "You move on. You continue, or you don't. It's a risk that we take. There are so many risks in life. I always laugh and say driving to the mountains is probably the most dangerous thing we do, and we do it every single day and we assume that risk. For me and the other riders, you push the envelope of what's possible." The scoring system doesn't help, either. In 1998, the final combined the scores of both runs. But that was viewed as promoting a conservative approach, not wanting to risk a fall and low score, and subsequent Olympics counted only your best of two runs. In 2018, you got three. The message is clear: Go for it. YOLO. J.J. Thomas, a 2002 bronze medalist and White's coach, was asked if he thought they would go for a fourth gold in 2022 in Beijing. "Who knows, who knows," Thomas said. "We have to decompress. We have to talk about it. I know what he's going to say, though: 'Man, that was actually kind of easy. I can see myself doing that in four years.'" Totsuka is 16. Ayumu is 19. Ten of the 12 finalists here were 23 or under, when risk and judgment and wisdom are distorted by the invincibility of youth. White would be 35 in Beijing. American Jake Pates finished eighth. He's 19, too, and tried gazing into the future of a sport that is changing like mountain weather. Three weeks ago, no one had ever landed back-to-back 1440s in competition. Now two men had. As he spoke, dark clouds ominously gathered in the peaks above. "The level is insane," Pates said. "To do those tricks, those dudes are absolutely psycho even trying them. But if that's the way it's going, that's kind of what you've got to do to stay in there." Skateboards and sushi never sounded so good. |

Now two men had.\nAs he spoke, dark clouds ominously gathered in the peaks above.\n\n\"The level is insane,\" Pates said. \"To do those tricks, those dudes are absolutely psycho even trying them. | body | The Los Angeles Times Logo SPECIAL OFFER | 12 WEEKS FOR 99¢ ADVERTISEMENT COLUMN OLYMPICS SPORTS American pairs skaters Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim advance to final By HELENE ELLIOTT FEB 13, 2018 | 11:20 PM PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA American pairs skaters Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim advance to final Alexa Scimeca Knierim and USA's Chris Knierim compete in the pair skating short program Wednesday at the 2018 Winter Olympics. (Roberto Schmidt / Getty Images) The best skaters make a short program or short dance feel too brief, turning it into a tantalizing glimpse of talent confined to a cruelly abbreviated format. The exquisite precision of world champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China on Wednesday in the first phase of the Olympic pairs competition was a superb taste of a figure skating feast, the best dish in an extraordinarily delectable banquet staged at Gangneung Ice Arena. Sui and Han's stunning performance to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" brought them a personal-best score of 82.39 points but couldn't distance them from Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov of the Olympic Athletes from Russia, who have 81.68 points. Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada are third at 76.82, with Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany fourth at 76.59. Savchenko, skating in a record-tying fifth Olympic pairs event with her third partner, is still a fiery competitor: While on the ice she asked Massot if he had doubled their planned side-by-side triple salchows, which he had. Those lost points proved the difference in keeping them out of the top three entering Thursday's free-skate finale. The American husband and wife duo of Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim, who contributed to the U.S. team bronze medal this week by skating their short and long programs, committed a few errors Wednesday. She touched her hand down while landing a throw and he stepped out of a jump but they were among the 16 pairs that advanced to Thursday's final. They stand 14th, with 65.55 points. They did better in the short program during the team competition but said fatigue wasn't to blame for their errors in the pairs competition. "We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough event," Scimeca-Knierim said, clutching the handwritten valentine her husband gave her in the kiss-and-cry area. "We're not at the point in our career yet where we're aiming to be in the top five or six. Those teams are a little bit more advanced for now, so we just stick to one another and work on what we're good at, and that's enjoying the process." The quality stretched from top to bottom, including an 11th-ranked performance by North Koreans Ryom Tae-ok and Kim Ju-sik. They're among the few North Koreans competing in these Games, along with a dozen female hockey players, and a heavy police presence was visible outside the arena. The skaters were greeted by polite applause from the crowd. The pair got a warm reception after they skated to Jeff Beck's recording of Paul McCartney's "A Day in the Life" and earned a personal-best score of 69.40 points. They did not stop to speak to reporters afterward. However, the Olympic information system quoted Kim as saying they were encouraged by the fans' support and that they've had a good experience here. "First of all, there have been no inconveniences whatsoever to life in the South area. We could really feel the power and the energy of the Korean people," he said. Ryom added, "We are very happy to skate in our first Olympics and compete with pairs from other countries." Knierim applauded the North Korean pair's effort. "It's really great that they can come out and skate like that, especially at the Olympics," he said. "We've competed against them a couple times and the amount that they've grown is amazing. They've improved so much in the last two seasons, so we're very happy for them." No Americans have won an Olympic pairs medal since Jill Watson and Peter Oppegard won bronze at Calgary in 1988. Scimeca-Knierim and her husband aren't going to break that streak here, but they believe they're on their way to being a top-five team. "We'll get there someday," she said. "This journey is really between Chris and I. it's not about our score and it's not about the other teams being better than us. It's deeper than that. It's our joy and love for skating." |

| body | ap to IndonesianThe speed of a cheetah in running sparked the curiosity of Camille Grohe, an animal researcher. He finds out why the cheetah can still maintain balance despite running fast. The head of this fastest land animal remains stable while it is running fast. Cheetah eyes barely split his concentration, just focusing on the prey. Apparently, it is not the feet that make the cheetah able to keep running fast. Camille Grohe reveals, the inner cheetah ear that actually plays a role. This is as reviewed in the latest report in Scientific Reports on Friday (2/2/2018). In this study, the scientists also compared 21 large cat type skulls. Seven of them belong to live cheetahs now. The results show that cheetah ears that live today are not like the felida that is still sustainable until now. Felida is a big cat type. There is a change of cheetah ear part from time to time. "The cheetah's ancestors have developed lean bones that make it easy for the cheetah to run very fast. Then, the inner ear is sensitive to head movement. This keeps the cheetah heads stable so they can run faster, "Grohe added. Furthermore, compared to other large cats, the large vestibular system in the cheetah is more affected by its inner ear. More Feedback Swap to IndonesianThe earloop of the cheetah is semicircular. This channel that keeps the head and eye movements focused while the cheetah runs. "This unique inner ear anatomy reflects increased sensitivity and a more agile response to head movements," said John Flynn, co-lead researcher, as quoted by National Geographic, Monday (5/2/2018). The inner ear is the key to maintained balance and posture that remains stable when the cheetah runs fast. The inner ear holds over three semicircular channels containing fluid and sensory hair cells. These three channels are responsible for determining movement in the head. Each channel in the inner ear responds to different movements. One channel is responsible for the up and down motion. Other channels are sensitive to sideways. While the next channel is tasked for sloping motion from one side to the other. The cheetah's ability to run fast is not only supported by the inner ear. Long and flexible spine makes the cheetah able to accelerate movement from 0 to 96 km / h in just 3 seconds. The large nasal cavity allows the cheetah to breathe air during the stretching phase. In addition, strong and sleek muscles make the body of the cheetah more pushed forward when running. |
