      "body": "A new study, commissioned by job search site XPat Jobs, argues that intelligent robots may take away our jobs sooner than we think — possibly in the next 30 years.\n\n\"People will be surprised how fast things will change,\" said XPat Jobs director Rhys Maddocks. \"Technology and computers have only really touched the work market so far. That and the globalization of all work will revolutionize the way we think of work in the next 25 years.\"\n\nThe study found that drivers, call center workers and others in the service industry would be out of a job, as technology drives robots to be more efficient and cost-effective. Conversely, humans will have to compete harder for a smaller number of jobs, while we battle our own biological limitations to keep up; people would develop \"poor eyesight, smaller organs and constantly-furrowed brows\" from long, tedious work, with the average working week increasing to 50.5 hours. (Although such evolutionary changes generally take longer than just one or two generations.) \n\nWorkers in the increasingly globalized economy would also have to develop new skill sets: Speaking multiple languages would be a requirement (Mandarin, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese), and sleeping patterns would need change in order to function in multiple time zones. The study even predicts that people will resort to ear implants or brain-boosting procedures to become more efficient.\n\n\"Humans may even feel the need to compete against such artificial intelligences for jobs, as genetic or android technology develops to such an extent that we can upgrade ourselves in much the same way as a software upgrade,\" said Derek Woodgate, president of consulting firm The Futures Lab.\n\nAre these fears overblown? Given that the study doesn't actually provides any statistics or figures, it can be easy to dismiss these claims as unfounded fear-mongering. But as for its point that the job market is in the danger of being taken over by robots, there are plenty of other studies to back it up. According to research from Oxford University, nearly half of the U.S. workforce is in danger of losing jobs to robots in the next 20 years.\n\nMicrosoft founder Bill Gates is inclined to agree. \"Technology over time will reduce demand for jobs, particularly at the lower end of [the] skill set … Twenty years from now, labor demand for lots of skill sets will be substantially lower. I don't think people have that in their mental model,\" he said in March.\n\nAnd the introduction of a robot workforce could be as transformative as the dawn of the industrial era. \"We are at an inflection point,\" write MIT researchers Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee in their book, The Second Machine Age. \"The key building blocks are already in place for digital technologies to be as important and transformational to society and the economy as the steam engine.\"\n\nChange is already happening. While this all sounds like it will happen in the distant future, the fact is that many of these predictions have begun to take place. Retail stores and restaurants are letting customers order and pay for their purchases with mobile devices, which cuts out cashiers, waiters and other salespeople. By last year, there were already 1.2 million industrial robots hard at work around the world, analyzing documents, filling prescriptions and doing other menial tasks.\n\nThe exponentially increasing pace is in line with predictors such as Moore's Law, which estimates that computing power doubles approximately every 18 months. As this helpful GIF from Mother Jones shows, computing power has been growing at an accelerated rate since the invention of the first programmable computer — and it won't be long before it has the same power as the human brain.\n\nSo while XPat Jobs' predictions sound like they're coming straight from the pages of a sci-fi novel, they might not be too far off. Americans might not be too excited about the prospect of having a personal robot at home, but in a few decades, that may all change.",

One effort, which at the time was touted as being the world's largest air purifier, has yielded a 7-meter tall Smog Free Tower in Rotterdam, but when your country boasts of some of the worst air quality around, you have to go bigger. Much bigger.\n\nChina's latest attempt to mitigate some of its air pollution is an experimental air purification tower standing 100 meters high, located in Xian in the north central part of the country, and preliminary tests indicate that it can improve air quality over an area some 10 square kilometers in size. The smog tower, which is a project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, isn't a power hog, either, thanks to the design that uses large greenhouses at the base of it to heat incoming air with solar energy so that it rises passively through the tower's multiple filters before exiting the top much cleaner than before.\n\nThe tower, which was completed last year, is said to produce about 10 million cubic meters (353 million cubic feet) of clean air per day, with an average reduction in PM 2.5 (fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 microns or less in width) of 15% in local air during periods of heavy pollution. Anecdotal evidence gathered by the South China Morning Post was mixed when it came to the efficacy of the smog tower, with some residents claiming to not notice any difference in the air quality, while others said \"the improvement was quite noticeable.\"\n\nIf the testing results continue to bear out over time, the Academy group behind the smog tower hopes to build a much bigger version measuring 500 meters tall and 200 meters wide, with the greenhouses feeding it covering some 30 square kilometers. Ten years after that, the workforce may be totally\nunrecognizable.\nHere’s what the hottest jobs of 2040 could look like.\n\n1.   ### Virtual Store Manager ###\n       More consumers are shopping online, but they still crave human connection.\n\nIn a Google survey, 61% of mobile users said they call a business before making online purchases. And 73% of consumers think online advertisements “should tell a unique story,” according to a study from Adobe and Edelman Berland.\n\nAmir Mashkoori, CEO and Co-founder of ISDI Digital University, doesn’t expect that to change anytime soon.\n\n“As the pace of technology accelerates, people are thinking about how to bring the basic things that machines don’t have — the ability to think, smell, taste — into the consumer journey,” he says. “In a digital world, you lose some of that capability.”\n\nIn the future, brands will try to inject humanity into their digital spaces, with customer outreach and data-driven site design, says Steve Cadigan, co-founder of ISDI. Ironically, they’ll need humans for that.\n\n“The customer is now a set of eyeballs,” he says. “The role of community manager, someone who engages and delight customers in a digital world the same way as the retail store manager, is going to explode.”\n\n2.  ### Robot Mediator ###\n      Sure, robots are disrupting some industries. But in others, they’re actually just making humans better at their jobs. The robots in Amazon’s warehouses, which buzz around the company’s fulfillment centers and help workers find and carry items, is a perfect example.\n\nAs robot-human partnerships become more common, complications will arise — and could create some surprising ancillary jobs. Some, like robot repair, already exist. Others, like robot counselor, do not.\n\n“Despite fears of automation taking away jobs, the need for skilled humans to operate, utilize and advance technologies will remain unequivocally necessary,” says Alan Stukalsky, Chief Digital Officer at the recruiting agency Randstad USA. “Perhaps AI therapists will be the next evolution in mental health professionals—helping workers cope with their non-human colleagues.”\n\n3.  ### Robot Trainer ###\n      Machine learning, which uses algorithms to train computers to, say, make a Spotify playlist, was once a skill known by an elite few.\n\nThe programmers in those roles today are still some of the most sought-after professionals out there, but new technology has made becoming one more accessible.\n\nEventually, the algorithms that control these functions will become standardized, and the jobs tasked with interfacing with them could feasibly go to low-level workers, says Avi Flombaum, dean of the coding bootcamp Flatiron School.\n\n“You don’t need to understand a robot to program routines into a robot,” he says. “As software becomes commoditized, I can see this becoming the entry level job of the future, like working with an Excel spreadsheet.”\n\n4.  ### Drone Traffic Controller ###\n      In 2016, more than 670,000 drones were registered with the federal government.\n\nWith Amazon and Google testing ways to deliver packages by drone, corporate job openings in this field are an inevitability (future drone pilots are already enrolling at “Unmanned Vehicle” specialty schools). By 2040, they’ll need be regulated by an air traffic system similar to what airplane pilots use, Flombaum predicts.\n\n“The same way that air traffic controllers monitor planes, we’re going to want someone coordinating, monitoring, and instructing drones,” he says.\n\n5.  ### Augmented Reality Designer ###\n      Some industries, like marketing and retail, have already taped AR designers to create interactive experiences for consumers.\n\nBut soon, augmented reality — which combines computer-generated images with physical ones — will hit the mainstream. By 2040, the engineers, architects, and UX designers who work with this technology will be a hot commodity in the job market and they’ll drive everything from job training to marketing billboards, according to Flombaum.\n\n“Virtual reality and augmented reality is still very nascent, the job growth for the designers and programmers who create these experiences will be massive,” he says.\n\n6.  ### Micro Gig Agents ###\n      As the gig economy expands, independent consultants will work alongside a growing number of independent contractors, says Christie Lindor, a management consultant and host of the MECE Muse Unplugged podcast.\n\nLindor calls these people “reinventionists” and “micro gig agents,” and says they’ll act like talent agents, tasked with helping freelancers find and market their projects.\n\n“People will have contractual ‘micro’ projects of varying lengths of time instead of the full time, permanent jobs of today,” she says. “A lot of people will need significant assistance navigating a new landscape.”",
