The project will use atomic swaps to allow users to exchange tokens at absolutely minimal costs without any intermediaries or centralized exchanges. The project also plans to integrate Lightning Swaps (LS) to power extremely fast and cheap transactions.\n\nWhile the most appealing component of Bitcoin Atom is a potential solution to Bitcoin’s scalability problems, it also has a few other differentiating points. Perhaps foremost among these, Bitcoin Atom uses a hybrid consensus model that combines Proof of Work (POW) and Proof of Stake (POS), two different types of algorithms for reaching consensus, or agreement, on whether or not a transaction is valid before it is added to the blockchain. This hybrid model aims to increase network stability and decrease the threat that a majority group of miners could sabotage the system.\n\nThe current process of trading in cryptocurrencies involves several steps, as well as exchange and network fees. For example, if you want to trade Bitcoin for Ethereum, you have to create an account on an exchange such as Bittrex or Binance and place your order. However, with Bitcoin Atom, you’d be able to swap it directly (assuming you already have a wallet with some cryptocurrency to swap).\n\nAtomic swaps are a two-step process that involves placing your order inside your node and then receiving your exchange cryptocurrency. In bypassing third-party exchanges, Bitcoin Atom users can keep their identities private, perform faster trades, and reduce trading fees.\n\nWith atomic swaps, either the trade happens, or it doesn’t. There’s no need to blindly trust that another party will fulfill their end of the bargain or to worry about your funds being sent into escrow.\n\nBitcoin’s scaleability issues have created a major roadblock to mainstream adoption. With the costs of a single Bitcoin transaction nearing $30 at some points over the last couple of months, many cryptocurrency evangelists are searching for a solution.\n\nBitcoin currently has a throughput of 3-4 transactions per second (TPS). With SegWit (an update to the original protocol), Bitcoin could theoretically get 6 TPS. Ethereum, currently number two in cryptocurrency market capitalization, has a throughput of 20 TPS. To put this in perspective, PayPal is able to process 193 TPS, and Visa averages 1,667 TPS and is estimated to be able to process more than 56,000 TPS.\n\nFor a token expected to revolutionize global payments, Bitcoin’s throughput rate doesn’t inspire confidence.\n\nSeveral other Bitcoin forks have tried to address Bitcoin’s scalability issues, but they mostly focus on expanding Bitcoin’s 1MB blocksize. Bitcoin Cash, for example, increased the blocksize to 8MB, resulting in an exponentially cheaper transaction cost.\n\nThese blocksize solutions, however, are limited. The problem isn’t linear; even a 100MB blocksize poses a problem.\n\nThat’s where Bitcoin Atom comes into play.\n\nAn atomic solution\nBitcoin Atom (whose currency symbol is BCA) is a SegWit-enabled Bitcoin fork that, as mentioned above, uses “on-chain atomic swaps” and a hybrid consensus model.\nhttps://youtu.be/rppgwRC29qk\nThis isn’t a blocksize expansion, it’s a paradigm shift in how the token operates. Instead of Bitcoin Atom attempting to change Bitcoin’s blocksize from 1MB to a hypothetical 100MB so that the network can add more stacks of transactions to the blockchain at a faster rate, it’s fundamentally changing how transactions are conducted.\n\nAs a cryptographically powered smart contract, an atomic swap creates a direct and trustless exchange.\n\n(Note on the video above: The concept of atomic swaps has been around since 2013 but has been a work-in-progress ever since. In September 2017, Litecoin founder Charlie Lee helped perform the first LTC/BTC cross-chain atomic swap. For those who don’t know me my name is Fabian.  Born in Brisbane, Australia to Swedish parents, I’ve taken to quite the journey through life thus far!\nFor those who don’t know what a “walkabout”\nHow is my story different to anyone else’s here online you ask? Well, after going through not 1 but 2 category 5 cyclones (hurricanes if you’re from the Northern Hemisphere, Wind speeds up to 150 Mph) \nIn 2006 – Cyclone Larry, ($1.1 billion USD) in damage. I am a metal fabricator/welder by trade, I worked on various mine sites working above and underground in Queensland and Northern Territory for 2 years. The main tasks I had were repairing and maintaining the machines. I did my trade through my father’s company in just 3 years!\nIn 2012 Mum, Dad, Sister and myself took to a European vacation for 5 weeks which saw us have 5 days in Hongkong (not Europe I know), England, France, Netherlands, Belgium and finally Sweden. This was where my Sister and me could meet our cousins for the very first time, Mum and Dad were able to meet up with their siblings and extended family, allowing them to show us where they spent their childhood.\n2013 – Saw me inherit the “Travel Bug”, I embarked on my own adventure back to Sweden alone, but with more of a purpose then a holiday. This was where I gained my first international cap for the Swedish National Rugby League team. I was named as Captain and guided our nation to its first wins ever against Denmark and Norway where we became the Nordic Cup Champions in 2013.\nNow this is where the “walkabout” begins. The end of 2013 saw me at rock bottom (again) I had no where to live, my partner of 5 years had broken it off with me. What was I to do? I saved as much as I could and booked a 1-way ticket to Sweden in February 2014. I first tried living in the city of Malmo but that lasted 4 months before boredom and lack of job opportunities, I then packed the car and moved closer to Stockholm to live with my Aunt and cousins, and work for my Uncles construction firm.\n\nLets fast forward to todays date 13th January 2018, I’m now Married with a beautiful 1 year old girl living in Germany! How did I get here so fast? Well follow me here on Steemit in my future posts ill continue my journey with you after living stints in England and Germany, the problems I had obtaining Visa’s Etc.\nI hope I didn’t blabber on too much for an Introduction.
