      "body": "OK...Just one background post on me before I get to my current adventures in food security in Grand Cayman...\n\nMy parents were adventurous, caring people, and when I was growing up (age 5-8 circa, 1979-81), they decided to take my sister and I to West Africa; in particular, Mbingo, Cameroon.  My father was a teacher by education and a farmer by upbringing.  His new job was to produce \"sustainable\" income for an important regional leprosy hospital that had historically been funding by \"unsustainable\" donations that came from European and North American benefactors.  To do this, my father needed to show the locals how to set up a beef-and-milk business coop which could financially support the humanitarian work at the hospital.  The area has incredible pastureland that is excellent for this particular strategy.\n\nHere's the hospital today:  ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWigfEWm9M3dBP5aSNUiZ3pDT8FHeuA4ki2Z7meeZFwBP/image.png)\n\nTo make a very long but interesting story short, dad took to his position with aplomb and set up the coop with the locals.  To wit, about 3 decades after we got back from Africa (back to the freezing cold Canadian prairie), he received an email which announced the retirement of Moses, the man dad had placed in the managerial role of the finances on behalf of the hospital.  I think that all is the very DEFINITION of sustainable development...all without scandal or interruption...In fact, my brother in law, who is a Canadian physician (internal medicine) goes back to the hospital every year to help educate local health care providers.\n\nSuffice it to say that I was exposed to gorgeous/exotic sort of flora and fauna in that most impressionable of ages (5-8, if Freud is to be believed - this is a picture of the Ekom-Nkam Falls):  ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmduQvVEtUBiHJZqfNUaKw3UJA7ErAs7CabXLmfBkRyvrG/image.png)\nIndeed, it has long been rumoured that Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, first published 100 years ago as \"Tarzan of the Apes\" was actually imagined to be set in the amazing jungles of Cameroon.\n\nAlas, absorbing the tropical wonders (and spicy food!) of West Africa as a young boy of 5-8 goes by pretty fast (honestly, I think I had mostly forgotten about Canadian prairie winters) and then we came back to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada:  ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSWHoHe9AtancednzTVBfMcGBTWRRw3bygZ9JYhwJrZeJ/image.png)\nWithout the pictures, I can't really convey how dramatically different these places are from each other:  culturally, historically, geographically but especially the weather-based differences.       "body": "Hello Everyone,\n\nFurther to my introductory post, I had promised to describe the science of aquaponics and how my Canadian company is developing the technology to have a meaningful impact on food security on an international scale...So here we go!\n\nAccording to Wikipedia, \"Aquaponics refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, excretions from the animals being raised can accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity. In an aquaponic system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by nitrifying bacteria initially into nitrites and subsequently into nitrates, which are utilized by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then recirculated back to the aquaculture system.       "body": "Greetings Steemit Community!  \n\nMy name is Tim Goltz and I'm so glad that Jeff Berwick's blog (https://dollarvigilante.com/blog) directed me to this incredible opportunity to create value for a community and actually get paid something for it!  \n\nBack in 2011, I ran across a provocative-sounding book called, \"The Coming Famine: The Global Food Crisis and What We Can Do to Avoid It,\" by investigative journalist Julian Cribb.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXYdisRryycZrRf25kBwUoZVKSZX43dBTzxniFWm77gfW/image.png)\n\nLittle did I realize, at that time, that it would change my life, allowing me to make meaningful, sustainable contributions to food security issues in some of the most amazing places around the world.\n\nThis new blog intends to relate my (decidedly) international personal and business stories that began several years ago and now consumes my life (in a most excellent way)!  This will be a story about the brave new world of food security technologies seen through my own eyes as one humble participant in the white-hot ag-tech/food security space.\n\nThe story really started a few years prior, as I was doing some management consulting for a small start-up aquaponics company (more on aquaponics later) just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  The start-up at the time was trying to grow its nutraceutical plants (echinacia - used as an anti-viral and immunobooster and rhodiola - a concentration enhancer) faster by growing them by way of aquaponics.  The very moment I came across The Coming Famine, I just knew that the start-up should shift gears and start growing commercial quantities of food.\n\nAt this time, I was invited to an early meeting of the start-up's Board of Directors.  The meeting was to set the direction of the company for the coming year(s).  I had purchased copies of the book for each of the Directors and distributed the books to each of them at the meeting.  Suffice it to say, as of that hot August day back in 2011, the start-up (now called NutraPonics Canada Corporation http://www.nutraponics.ca/) changed direction from growing nutraceuticals to leafy greens, herbs and microgreens, with a view to bring food security to some of the harshest communities around the world, but beginning domestically in Canada.\n\nI can't wait to share my ongoing story with the Community here!  \n\nMy next post will describe how NutraPonics is advancing aquaponics as a high-tech, indoor, vertical food security solution.\n\nStay tuned!",
