| body | Korean Cyberattack Fails to Foil Crypto-Ratings Release by The Weiss Ratings Team | January 24, 2018 First Cryptocurrency Ratings Issued Despite Korean Cyberattack Bitcoin Gets C+ (“Fair”). Ethereum Is B (“Good”). PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL — Weiss Ratings, the nation’s leading independent rating agency of financial institutions, has released today the nation’s first-ever grades on cryptocurrencies by a financial rating agency, despite a massive Korean cyberattack on its website. Weiss gives Bitcoin a C+ (meaning “fair”) and Ethereum a B (“good”). None of the cryptocurrencies covered currently get a grade of A (“excellent”). Weiss Ratings staff was up all night last night fending off denial of service attacks from Korea, as evidenced by numerous mentions on Korean social media of a concerted call to bring down the Weiss Ratings website. “Earlier commentary on social media expressed considerable fear we were about to release negative ratings on their preferred currencies,” said Weiss Ratings founder Martin D. Weiss, Ph.D. “So this may be an attempt to thwart our release today.” Separately, Weiss experienced a surge in friendly visitors to the site. “Since our customers are almost entirely in the U.S., we rarely get more than small amounts of traffic from Asia. But last night, we had more than 100,000 unique visitors in a matter of hours, almost entirely from Asia, until early this morning, when more of the traffic rolled over to Europe. To handle the volume, our staff instantly expanded its server capacity on the cloud many times over,” Weiss said. What makes Weiss’ entry into cryptocurrency ratings significant is its history of independence and accuracy in other investment sectors, as noted by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times, among others. “Despite extreme price volatility, cryptocurrencies have a bright future and the potential to deliver unusually large profits to investors,” said Weiss Ratings founder Martin D. Weiss, Ph.D. “However, the market is hectic and confusing for investors. They need the clarity that only robust, impartial ratings can provide.” The Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings evaluate price risk, reward potential, blockchain technology, adoption, security, and other factors. “Due to rapid changes in the data,” explains Weiss, “upgrades and downgrades are more frequent than in other sectors we cover.” Below is a sampling of Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings, selected randomly to illustrate a variety of strengths and weaknesses: Bitcoin (rated C+) gets excellent scores for security and widespread adoption. But it is encountering major network bottlenecks, causing delays and high transactions costs. Despite intense ongoing efforts that are achieving some initial success, Bitcoin has no immediate mechanism for promptly upgrading its software code. Ethereum (B), the second most widely adopted cryptocurrency, benefits from more readily upgradable technology and better speed, despite some bottlenecks. Novacoin (D) and SaluS (D) are weak in terms of both technological innovation and adoption. Steem (B-) enjoys a relatively good balance of moderate strength in nearly all the key factors considered along with a social network feature. “All else being equal, as a cryptocurrency overcomes its individual challenges, it’s likely to be upgraded promptly,” Weiss adds. Weiss Ratings, which began in 1971, rates 55,000 institutions and investments. Unlike Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s, Fitch and A.M. Best, Weiss never accepts compensation of any kind from the entities it rates. To learn more about the Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings, go here. | body | I’m a pretty level headed guy in general when it comes to gambling. I enjoy betting on sports games but seem to get more of a kick out of betting $1 on some crazy odds in the hope of making a small gain. I have often been interested in the compulsion to gamble more but despite my best efforts have never been tempted to make an irrational bet or to gamble more than I am willing to lose. Any time I have tried to gamble more I quickly second guess my decision and play it safe. The oddity of this trait was clearly illustrated to me in my first visit to the track with some colleagues. After getting aquatinted with the general concept of betting on the race I began to feel comfortable with the format. The evening was far more centred on the dinner and conversation while occasionally going to the wicket to place our bets. After having some minor success with betting on the favourite horses I started to switch up my choice rational. I started betting on horses purely for their name as I enjoyed yelling “come on (insert odd or funny name here) and seemed to be having just as much if not more fun betting $1.00 on long shots. The way that I saw it was that I had committed to spending $20 and I had fully anticipated leaving having paid $20 for a fun evening. In keeping with my betting habits and as we were nearing the end of the races I came across a horse named Queen Elsa. At the time Frozen was played by my daughter on a daily basis and as such it seemed like a no brainer - I was betting big on Elsa. I announced this to my group and placed a massive bet of $3.00 to show (come in the top 3). The whole group was excited and as the race started with my colleagues getting in on the action of shouting “Come on Queen Elsa!” As the race continued it seemed that all our cheering had paid off. Queen Elsa was tearing it up. We continued cheering and became a bit of a sceptical as frustrated onlookers looked at us with contempt that their bet was not paying off. As race finished Queen Elsa had come in first place which for some reason made bet pay out even more. In heat of excitement a colleague named Nancy said “so, how much did you win?” The mood drastically halted after I revealed my big pay day of ... $13.00. I was so excited while the other 3 stopped. They were looking at me like I had 2 heads. You see, my colleagues were doing the math and assumed that I had bet $20 or $50 on this horse, that was what they were betting and so logically they had assumed that my excitement and revealing that I was placing a “big bet” would suggest that I had made a couple hundred dollars; they probably assumed that I would be picking up the dinner tab with my big winnings. Nancy looked at me as if to suggest that I was a stranger to her and asked “how much did you bet?” When I revealed that I had wagered a whopping $3.00, she immediately responded by asking “don’t you wish you didn’t bet more?” The questions was sincere and suggested that I fully comprehend the situation; did I regret not placing a large bet? Sure, I would have welcomed a greater reward, that was easy but was I willing to risk more to accomplish this? Even as I played the scenario out in my head I became riddled with anxiety over the potential loss of $20 or $50 in a matter of seconds. This anxiety only subsided when I reminded myself that I had not and that I won $10.00. I looked at Nancy and said “no, I don’t wish I bet more.” It was the truth, you see, I am not a gambler. I maintain a relatively modest stock portfolio with any plans of retirement funds tied up in long term “safe” investments. I do also have margin account that I see as “Fun Money” where I will invest in smaller penny stocks or companies that I think may become something. This however has a total of $1000.00 invested in it and when/if it goes I will not be putting anything else in right away. This all changed a few days ago with a somewhat large investment in Tron TRX. Tron had been on a run and the signs pointed to further increase. As such, I took some money out of a savings account and put it on Tron. I watched that evening as the price grew and it looked like my short term investment scheme was working. With the anticipation of Justin Sun’s upcoming announcement of a new partnership as well as more buzz it seemed that even small increases in the price would be beneficial to my bottom line. At 5:44am the next morning I suddenly woke and thought “what have I done?” I immediately checked the markets to find that my fear was valid. The blood drained from my head and time seemed to slow to a halt. The price had dropped a fair amount and I was now sitting at a loss. Immediately I understood the draw of the gambler. Now my situation is not dire, I did not borrow this money or mortgage my home (as I have heard others have done) but at the end of the day, I can’t really lose this money. I knew this before doing it but in spite of this I felt that I couldn’t lose, a similar sentiment that I have heard from many gamblers. From what I understand this is a well documented sociological trait but often presented as way of identifying someone with the “gambling” gene. The test goes as follows: 5 people watch a coin that is flipped. All agree that the coin has a 50% chance of landing on tails. The coin is flipped and lands on heads. The coin is flipped again but the participants all believe that there is a slight edge given to the coin falling on tails as the previous flip landed on heads. With each flip the odds increase for the coin to land on tails. After the coin has flipped 10 times with all times landing on heads the participants assume that there is some issues with the coin or that the odds had been manipulated. The truth is that it doesn’t matter how many times you flip a coin, the odds never change. It is a flaw of human behaviour to believe that simply because the coin has only landed on one side that it will inevitably land on the opposite side. The suggestion is that the “gambler” is convinced that the coin will eventually fall on the opposite side, so convinced that he or she will forgo rational thought on the potentially “hitting it big”. The issue that I have is that like many others I believed that I was somehow immune to this. I had done my research and as earlier illustrated, I do not have the “gamblers” gene. As such, my guard was down; I had believed that my conservative approach to gambling and investing somehow ensured that I would be immune to the same feeling of loss that I can only imagine is felt countless times an hour in Las Vegas. I had done the one thing that I didn’t think I would ever do; I gambled money that I was not willing to lose. Now here I sit writing these thoughts down if for no other reason than to distract me from constantly watching the markets hoping for a boost. The reality is that I have not totally thrown out hope, it is currently Saturday and we are still waiting for the announcement from Tron on their new partnerships however, the one thing that I know is that I am not a “gambler”! This has given me a clear example of why I don’t take big risks and why I prefer small calculated risks where the potential for gain is moderate at best while the loss is manageable. To be honest, one of my biggest fears is that Monday morning Tron gets a good boost and I am faced with the misleading perception that my fears were all unnecessary or hysterical; yet again I find myself in a gamblers mindset believing that I can still salvage my losses and rise out of this. Is it possible that the gambler’s compulsion is more so an inability to remember the gut-wrenching feeling of loss? Luckily I will have this narrative to reflect upon to remember in either situation be it positive or negative in order to remind myself that I am not a gambler. |

| title | COBINHOOD - good or bad? |
| body | Anyone interested to see what COBINHOOD will do to the market when they list a number of alt coins? On one hand I love that I can quickly buy into a coin and if it looks like it’s slipping simply sell for Ethereum or Bitcoin, then buy back if it stabilizes without any fees. On the other hand having minimal consequence for jumping ship will devastate some of these coins and cause massive dips. Although the trading fees are minimal in the grand scheme of things it does cause me to think twice before jumping ship. I have signed up and transferred some Ethereum over to keep an eye on what happens. |
