You've likely heard it by now, the bug in Parity's WalletLibrary , leading to all Ethereum in all Parity wallets being stuck in limbo, potentially forever. *They fucked up*.\n\nBut I'm not here to rag on Parity in particular, no matter how much they deserve it. I'm here to rag on all developers, and their software - or at least, the 90% Sturgeon was talking about.  Today's code is garbage. The Renaissance period of the history of computing has come to an end. Elegant, unix-like  C has turned to buggy and bloated C++. People are running Javascript, **server side**. Indian code farms pump out thousands of enterprise-tier lines of Java a day, with no regard for quality. \n\nWhatever happened to the philosophy of clean, simple code?  Code that almost comments itself as you write, concise in it's implementation. UNIX had the problem solved in the 70s, where each tool was designed with a purpose, sharing useful code in refined, well-implemented libraries. Debugged not through Valgrind nor complex analysis, but through thorough examination, rewriting bits here and there until nothing else could be rewritten. A great quote from *Ken Thomson* comes to mind:\n##### *One of my most productive days was throwing away 1000 lines of code.*\n####\nToday, entire  kernels are implemented in less SLOC (source lines of code) than the fucking Parity wallet. Proper, real, actual kernels, too - MINIX 3, roughly 12K SLOC; Parity Wallet's github, roughly 550K SLOC. It would almost be funny if it weren't terrifying. Every day, people are putting real money and real risks into the hands of these developers,  and these same developers can't even write a fucking library correctly. A library, might I remind you, that managed **$280 MILLION DOLLARS** worth of Ethereum. \n\n**Developers: It doesn't matter if you're using a super-duper memory-safe, hyperfast megalanguage, if your code is shit.** When you write code, you are writing a piece of software that is designed to achieve a goal. The best way to achieve that goal is not 100MB of npm packages or `bower install everything-one-can-think-of`, it's short, simple, concise code. This philosphy lasted for 50 years and largely persists in only the best of circles today, developers like those working on OpenBSD, as an example. Are the OpenBSD developers wanking off about memory safety, or are they writing code again and again, cutting it down, refining it, and keeping things simple? Which of those choices do you think is the road to good software?\n\nApologies this article may be a little rambly, but you should get my point. Stop overengineering. *Overengineering is death*. Next time you're writing code, take a good look at it.       "body": "great thoughts. but does this mean you don't own or trade any currencies or only the \"unproven\" ones?\nmy take at the issue is that cryptos and blockchains are essentially good and have perspective but not the hundreds (actually over a thousand) we see now - most of which are just derivative and speculative. \nthe thing to realise is that the market is very young and not matured yet - the oldest one (btc) has been around for only some 8 years. i.e. it still hasn't stood the test of time and the market is behaving erratically and in my opinion the air needs to clear in the coming months and years. it is an interesting look at e.g. coinmarketcap.com from 2 years ago and now - see how many currencies have since ceased existing and how many new ones emerged. \noverall, however, I still see the potential in some of the basic and established ones, just can't quite tell where is the limit and when the potential will be realised (if I knew, i'd probably be a millionaire by now)",

Is there a need? If not, maybe you should re-evaluate your choice. The blockchain is essentially the same as Bitcoin.\n\n* Verge is traceable.\nBecause of the public blockchain, every transaction is visible. Verge is no less traceable than Bitcoin, and due to the relatively low popularity, analysis is made easier. Hell, you can even see a rich list of who has the most Verge (however, at the time of writing, the site is down).\n\n* Verge has anonymity (but not really).\nVerge claims to be anonymous - this is only true in the most barebones sense. Your wallet's transactions are routed through the Tor network or over i2p, obsfucating your IP address. This is not however, anonymity. I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about.\n\n**NEO:** *\"Backed by the Chinese government\"*\nThis is untrue.\n\n**NEO:** *\"Runs in almost all programming languages\"*\n**Ethereum**: *\"Runs only on Solidity\"*\n\nThis is a very strange comaprison, and the reason why I don't think youy know what you're talking about. Ethereum is not a piece of software, it is a protocol. It doesn't \"run\" on anything except a computer. You can write an Ethereum wallet, or a miner, in C, Go, or Haskell, or whatever you'd like. The same applies to NEO. \n\nThe difference is how the contracts are written. Solidity was desgined for smart contracts, and compiles to EVM bytecode.  Anyone can write an EVM compiler or even a transpiler, for perhaps converting some language to Solidity.\n\nIn a similar sense, the NeoVM runs on it's own type of bytecode, only the difference is the (poorly documented) compiler  can handle both C# and Java **(note: not \"almost all programming languages\")**, two poorly designed languages which and frankly unsuitable, and two languages which attract bad programmers, as opposed to a language crafted for the purpose of writing contracts.\n\nIt's a very unusual comparison to make - to me, as a programmer, it looks like the NEO team don't want to get to work writing a KISS solution to the contract paradigm. But that last point is just me. Point is, **both Ethereum and NEO, in the end, run \\*VM bytecode.** You provide no context, in a very \"pump and dump\" kinda way.\n\n\n*Note: I don't know what NEO actually does that makes it any more or less valuable than ETH, but I do know it's not mineable, so my initial assumption is it's worthless.
