      "body": "I've lived there twice, beginning in 2001. I used to love Bangkok and it was my favorite place in the world. Now I won't step foot in it. It's become too Westernized, commercialized, overcrowded, and overpriced. \n\nPlus, the attitudes towards Westerners seems to have gotten much worse. Customer service has gone from barely there to horribly bad attitudes.  And if you bother a girl at a shop or bar who is tapping away on her phone while she's supposed to be working, good luck! Make sure there's no lose objects within her reach. \n\nWesterners are staying away in droves from Thailand compared to 15 years ago when I first moved there.",

      "body": "I kind of skipped through the first meeting I had with my friend's brother and the other guy. Basically you have to get people to support your application. The brother called another Mason he knew. \n\nWe met, talked for a while, and he also supported my application. I was nervous for this meeting as well. I thought I was in over my head, not sure what I was getting myself into. But I keep moving forward on it.\n\nOne thing I didn't do so well was how I answered the question \"Why do you want to be a Freemason?\"\n\nI don't want to give that out just yet but the brother corrected me and we talked about it. \n\nUp to this point the brother was super supportive and that helped although I still felt pretty nervous.",

      "body": "1) Get your financial house in order first.\n\nExpenses & income--You have to organize your expenses and income like a business. Determine how you can reduce expenses and increase income. I read a lot of Robert Kiyosaki for help with this. I also went to a local Meetup about investing and we learned about personal finances there too.\n\nExpenses:\nTwo major mindset changes need to be done. First, rethink your personal definitions of \"wants\" and \"needs.\" This is a difficult one. Some things I changed from needs to wants and could therefore get rid of were cable TV, eating out too often, getting new clothes I didn't need. Shopping at major chain stores when I could get the exact same things at dollar stores or discount stores. And, eliminating shopping as an activity and only when I had something that I identified that I needed. In addition to the discount stores, I even turned shopping at Goodwill type surplus stores into treasure hunting. My girlfriend at the time even got into it. I saved hundreds of dollars a month with those changes and they were mostly painless.\n\nInstead of cable TV, I read about real estate investing, online investing, and digital nomad living. I also spent that TV time on exercising. Getting out of my apartment more often. Seeing friends more often (they might not have liked that as much! LOL).\n\nI needed to get rid of my credit card payments. I needed a car that worked but without a car payment or expensive insurance. I bought a scooter and used that for 80% of my transportation. It was a blast! \n\nI adopted a frugal mindset. When you do that, giving up things like cable TV doesn't seem like a sacrifice, but more like a relief! It freed up time to be outside more. To read more. I'd hop on my scooter, ride to the park and read or exercise. I cancelled my gym membership then studied online about options for outside exercising.\n\nI read about being frugal and was proud of it. To me, being frugal wasn't about being cheap, it was about not wasting money when you don't have to. Why pay $3 for a box of soap when you can buy it for a $1 at a dollar store.  My girlfriend and I would have picnics instead of going out to eat.  I had s shopping routine. I would go to stores in the following order, from least expensive to most expensive-- 1) Dollar store. 2) Discount store 3) Surplus store (if applicable) 4) Regular chain stores.\n\nSo I paid off my credit cards. I only kept the no annual fee Visa-Mastercards and my Amex card. I never charged anything I couldn't pay off that month and I never carried a balance. I kept my Amex because although it has an annual fee, it is great for traveling and online ordering. \n\nI have disputed numerous things though Amex and they were awesome. This includes a botched car repair that the shop tried to charge me almost $2,000 for.  In addition to reporting the shop to the state licensing, I disputed it through Amex because that's the card I used to pay for the repair. I forwarded the state complaint to Amex and after their investigation, I won the dispute and did not have to pay the $2,000. The shop also paid for another shop to do the repair the correct way. Amex has helped with other legitimate online disputes in the 20+ years I've been with them. Once a website charged me double for an item. Amex took care of that dispute for me too. So, I find their card invaluable for being a Digital Nomad.\n\nIncome:\nI had a good job and it offered unlimited overtime. Unfortunately the job was a high stress job so I only worked about 8-10 hours of OT a week. That was about an extra check every month so all that money got included in my other savings.\n\nIf I didn't have the OT opportunity I would have gotten a part-time job somewhere. I don't care what it would have been, it could have been working at a retail store on the weekend or anything to get extra money to put towards my move abroad.\n\nI learned about tax advantages and worked with my tax person each year to get good tax refunds. That went right into savings too. \n\nI gathered everything I wasn't going to take with me and what I could sell on craigslist and ebay, I did. I used craigslist for easy to sell or large items.\n\nI went to ebay with some other things that I needed to reach a larger audience with. I sold things I never thought I would. I had a bunch of old camping gear. It was all still working, just old. I put it together and sold it as a lot to a Boy Scout leader.  I sold old car manuals from a classic car I had. I even sold my beloved classic car on ebay.  I sold an old bike rack for a car. I spent a buck on spray paint, cleaned and painted it, and sold it on craigslist.\n\nIt became a challenge to see what I could sell. I priced the things reasonably and it all sold. I sold all  my old sports and camping gear and more. The things I didn't sell I gave to various family members who wanted them. Anything that was left I gave to my parents who were going to give it to a neighbor who was having a garage sale. I let my parents keep the money from those sales.\n\nMy next post will be on banking and investment preparations before you move!",

      "body": "Awesome! \n\nIf I may offer some unsolicited advice...you may have already done this but really make sure you have a couple online bank accounts and tell your credit cards/ATM places that you are going to spend some time overseas to make sure there are no \"travel restrictions\" that banks place on cards. I wouldn't tell them you are moving, just say you are traveling for at least 5, 6 months.  When you tell institutions that you are moving, they often over react and nothing good can come of it. If they ask, just say you are taking a break and seeing the world. They can understand that. Like Paypal is the worst to work with from overseas. Make sure all your payment avenues are set up before you move. Many financial websites and even Hotmail track your IP address and might block you if the IP is from a different country than where you were using the accounts before. Especially if you are from the US, banks and other financial institutions have to follow these \"Know your customer\" laws the US started that are ridiculously invasive. \n\nFeel free to write if you encounter any speed bumps because I probably already experienced them and a way to get through it.\n\nGood luck!",

      "body": "I was always fascinated by secret societies. I read about them and always wanted to be behind the scenes. I seemed to gravitate to jobs that required covert work as well. I once worked as a retail store detective where we went undercover in stores, acting like a shopper but looking for shoplifters and then apprehending them. It was a fun job but even more so a dangerous one. \n\nThat led to being promoted into internal investigations where I investigated employee theft but also organized theft, bad check, and credit card fraud rings. We worked with government agencies as well. The agencies they call the three letter or two letter agencies. I was even recruited by one of them, but at the time it seemed like working for the government but an all encompassing career and I didn't want to commit like that at the time.\n\nLater in my career I did other covert work for the government which I'll go into later. But the point is that for some reason, these are avenues I always ended up in.\n\nOne day,  while out riding our motorcycles with a  friend of mine, we stopped at his older brother's house. It was a huge, expensive custom built home. While waiting for the brother to answer the door, I noticed a metal plaque embedded in the brick wall near the porch. The plaque was about the size of a light switch plate and it had a raised symbol on it. \n\nI asked my friend \"Hey, is your brother a Freemason?\"\n\nHe replied \"Yes, why?\"\n\n\"I always wondered about Freemasons\" I answered. \n\nHe told me to ask him about it. We went inside and the place was gorgeous! Imported marble floors, statues, two chandeliers.....it was part palace, part museum.\n\nWe sat down, had a drink, and talked for a while about where we were riding that day. I was nervous about asking the burning question on my mind. Eventually I said \"I saw the plaque out front, Freemasons right?\"\n\nThe brother replied \"Yes, I'm a Freemason.\"\n\nI didn't know if I should go on, but I chanced it \"How long have you been one?\"\n\n\"Oh a long time, since I was in my 30s?\" He said.\n\n\"How do you get to being one?\" I sheepishly asked. He began to tell me the process of becoming a Mason, as it's often called. One of the oldest secret societies still in existence. There are others, but Freemasons are notorious.\n\nI had to do a follow up meeting with the brother and another member. We talked for a while, some paper work was done, and I was off to my next step. \n\nI was on my way to becoming a Freemason. Little did know what I was about to experience next. I researched as much as I could. Would there be a blood ritual? Would I have to sell my soul to the devil? Will they sacrifice a virgin at my expense? \n\nI waited for the call and then it came.       "title": "How I moved overseas and now live as a digital nomad!",
      "body": "I quit my job and moved to the other side of the globe….twice!\n\nAlthough I have not traveled to a lot of other countries, by choice, I have \"flags\" in a few countries including living in other countries on and off for 15 years. To me, I’m the most free I’ve every been.\n\nI always wanted to live in another country that had a drastically different culture than my own. I initially was going to live in Paris for a year. About 16 years ago, I had an apartment picked out online and was all set to move. But the cost of living there and prospects of getting a job with no contacts didn’t look all that inviting.\n\nMy first time…\nThen I saw a documentary on one of my favorite punk rockers who talked about his tour through Southeast Asia. It looked like a lot of fun so I researched it. It had a much lower cost of living than Paris and since I have a B.S. and Master’s degree, easier to find work there as well.\n\nI always said to myself that I wouldn’t move if I had a good job. I did have a job I enjoyed right out of grad school. But after about a year things changed and the company I worked for got raided by the FBI for insurance fraud. I knew they were doing it because they tried to get us to do it for them. I wouldn’t so I knew my days were numbered there. So I soon quit and moved to Southeast Asia.\n\nI first moved to Asia with no job prospects or knowing anyone. This was many years ago when the internet was still a baby and ebay was starting out. I bought things at culturally related things at markets and sold them on ebay. Then I met some people at shops from clothing manufacturers and I sold music related clothing online. Now ebay is more saturated so I don’t use it although many people still do so it is an option still. Just make sure you set up your paypal account in the US before you go. They are picky about setting up accounts in foreign countries.\n\nI also taught English, worked as a voice over actor, model, and actor in TV commercials and movies in a couple countries. It was all part of the adventure. Teaching English allowed me to have a work permit, have a steady income, and network with other expats.\n\nI didn't like teaching in Asia because they really didn't care about the student learning, it was more a status thing to have a foreigner working at their school so I vowed to never do it again.\n\nAs a hobby, I used to write a lot of TV and movie screenplays. During my first time living in Asia I submitted a couple TV projects based on my life working in psychiatric hospitals (the career I went to school for) to a writing contest in the US. One of the projects won the grand prize and the other was a top ten finalist. As a result, I received a paid option contract and an offer to shop the project around Hollywood if I wanted to move there. So I did. I spent three years pitching to movie and TV producers from the networks to Disney and everyone in between. I’ve walked the red carpet at an awards show in Hollywood. I even went to the Playboy Mansion for a charity party.\n\nThe plan…\nAfter some years in Hollywood, I missed Asia. But I didn’t want to work for anyone or be dependent on a job there. So, I thought about living off of passive income. But how to do that takes lot of planning. I had saved some money but not nearly enough to invest and live off of. By chance, I went to a three day Robert Kiyosaki real estate seminar. They gave us a bag of books that included a goal planning book and other texts. It had numerous worksheets that I completed in detail.\n\nI set up a five year investment plan that would give me a base income once I achieved my goals for enough income to live off of in the country I was moving to. The country I chose to move to has a much lower cost of living than the US which makes this plan easier to achieve and maintain.\n\nNow each of these steps can be broken down into chapters of a book but this is enough to get started and also provide a framework to move forward in your research.\n\nI read a lot. I listened to podcasts, anything. Robert Kiyosaki, Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, and anyone else on real estate and financial investing. Stocks, options, forex, online ecommerce, you name it! I read about frugal living as well.\n\nNext, I accepted and planned on living a modest, frugal life during this five year time to help achieve my goals. It’s a complete change of mindset. Consumerism is American. Buying what you want, when you want, and for whatever reason you want is the American way. You want a big new truck but don’t need a big new truck? Buy it anyway. I changed my thinking about what I wanted and what I needed.\n\nI could afford a new car, but I kept the one I had because it was paid off. So, no car payment and cheaper insurance.\n I could afford a nice two bedroom apartment or even a house, but I lived in small studio in a nice area. It was modestly furnished and I kept it that way. I wasn't a big clothes type person so I saved money on that. I didn’t drink hardly at all, so no sacrifice needed there\n\nI cancelled my cable, so another bill gone. I read a lot or exercised instead. I had a motorcycle at the time so I rode with friends and did other motorcycle events like shows and charity rides.\n\nI worked at a well-paying government job that gave a lot of overtime so I worked 8-10 hours a week of OT. Not a lot, it was the most I wanted to do in that type of job. If I didn’t have OT choices, I would have gotten a part-time job instead.\n\nI shopped at dollar stores. If they didn't have what I wanted, I went to a discount store. I rarely shopped at regular stores anymore but I still got the same things and didn't feel any negative change in my life. I did shop at the more expensive health food stores because I wanted to eat healthy, but I was careful about how I spent my money there too. Co-workers used to tease me about shopping at dollar stores until I took them there and they realized they could buy the same things for a fraction of the price. Since my real estate success meant she would make more commissions, she was quite helpful. There are checklists for people you need on your team to be successful.\n\nI studied the market I was to invest in and eventually I saved enough for my first down payment. I was saving a lot of money from my job while I was working this plan. I found properties that needed some work so I could get them cheaper and improve their value and then put tenants in.\n\nYou see, I did all of my real estate while working a full time job AND I was buying in a different state than where I lived. I had trusted people to inspect the properties for me plus an inspection company all as part of my real estate team.\n\nThere are also so many ways to invest in other financial avenues online that you can do from anywhere in the world, but many of them require that you have a US bank account, address, and phone number. This is also something you will need to maintain when you are gone. You can use a family member's address, keep your current bank accounts, and get an inexpensive cell phone with voicemail that gets reception in your new country. Do all of this before you go.\n\nI have different business entities and back accounts for each property too. Make sure you use a larger bank so that they have an ATM you can use around the world. Also have a personal bank account with worldwide ATM ability.\n\nThe second time….\nOnce I got enough properties and income, my real estate team was solid and in place, I moved back to Asia. I found a brand new condo to rent for a good price. I got fresh cooked food at the market next to my building. The building had a gym so I exercised there. I used the inexpensive public transportation. Then I got the bug to live on the beach. A good friend lived in a beach resort area about 90 minutes away so I visited him a few times and he convinced me to move there, which I did.\n\nNow, I look out my window and there is the beach, about 20 seconds away. It costs less than what most people pay for a car payment in the US.\n\nNow I live off my investment income. I study and research all kinds of different strategies. I have investments in numerous asset classes. I still have some of the properties I initially bought. They have gone up drastically in value and make a good monthly income for me. I have repair people who I trust and they know I live here and don't take advantage of that. I have one family member who is a real estate agent now and she is my property manager. My tenants don't know I live out of the country but they have my US cell phone and email address as a contact. I usually communicate with them by email. It’s better to have a hard copy for future reference.\n\nI use a free online property management program to keep track of my real estate. I enter all the emails I send to and get from tenants, their payments, repairs, pictures, etc.\n\nI have other family members who I pay to do any rehab and repair work. I keep in contact by texting, email, and phone. My cell phone company allows free global texting so I use that often.\n\nI also do peer to peer lending, real estate crowd funding, short term and long term stock investing, cryptocurrency investing, angel investing, own a drop shipping website business, and always researching new ways to invest online. I also submit new product ideas to companies for potential licensing deals and still submit my TV and movie projects to contests and producers to try and get a sale.\n\nI have a good health insurance plan where I live as well. I eat better and exercise more now in the new country I live in. Living on the beach just encourages a healthy lifestyle. I saw some exercise equipment that is pretty expensive in the US so for one of the items, I contacted a manufacturer in China from a popular manufacturer website and ordered a sample. I paid about 90% less than it costs in the USA. Another piece of equipment I brought with me from the US that I made at a fraction of the cost. I also ordered some weights here at a fraction of the cost of paying for a gym membership.\n\nI’m always reviewing my costs and figuring out ways to reduce them while increasing my income. I never mentioned my family situation but I have no children and recently got engaged. So, you might wonder about how and where I bought her engagement ring right? I got a real nice one, fifty-five diamonds, but I didn’t pay retail. In fact, I paid less than half of what the insurance value is. I shopped at local retailers, saw what her and I wanted, then bought the ring online through a big site my friend recommended. She loves it!\n\nThe success of living overseas really depends on extensive research, planning, discipline, and sacrifice.       "title": "How I moved overseas and live as a Digital Nomad!",
      "body": "I quit my job and moved to the other side of the globe….twice!\n\nAlthough I have not traveled to a lot of other countries, by choice, I have \"flags\" in a few countries including living in other countries on and off for 15 years. To me, I’m the most free I’ve every been.\n\nI always wanted to live in another country that had a drastically different culture than my own. I initially was going to live in Paris for a year. About 16 years ago,I had an apartment picked out online and was all set to move. But the cost of living there and prospects of getting a job with no contacts didn’t look all that inviting.\n\nMy first time…\nThen I saw a documentary on one of my favorite punk rockers who talked about his tour through Southeast Asia. It looked like a lot of fun so I researched it. It had a much lower cost of living than Paris and since I have a B.S. and Master’s degree, easier to find work there as well. \n\nI always said to myself that I wouldn’t move if I had a good job. I did have a job I enjoyed right out of grad school. But after about a year things changed and the company I worked for got raided by the FBI for insurance fraud. I knew they were doing it because they tried to get us to do it for them. I wouldn’t so I knew my days were numbered there. So I soon quit and moved to Southeast Asia.\n\nI first moved to Asia with no job prospects or knowing anyone. This was many years ago when the internet was still a baby and ebay was starting out.  I bought things at culturally related things at markets and sold them on ebay. Then I met some people at shops from clothing manufacturers and I sold music related clothing online. Now ebay is more saturated so I don’t use it although many people still do so it is an option still. Just make sure you set up your paypal account in the US before you go. They are picky about setting up accounts in foreign countries.\n\nI also taught English, worked as a voice over actor, model, and actor in TV commercials and movies in a couple countries. It was all part of the adventure. Teaching English allowed me to have a work permit, have a steady income, and network with other expats.\n\nI didn't like teaching in Asia because they really didn't care about the student learning, it was more a status thing to have a foreigner working at their school so I vowed to never do it again.\n\nAs a hobby, I used to write a lot of TV and movie screenplays.  During my first time living in Asia I submitted a couple TV projects based on my life working in psychiatric hospitals (the career I went to school for) to a writing contest in the US. One of the projects won the grand prize and the other was a top ten finalist. As a result, I received a paid option contract and an offer to shop the project around Hollywood if I wanted to move there. So I did. I spent three years pitching to movie and TV producers from the networks to Disney and everyone in between. I’ve walked the red carpet at an awards show in Hollywood. I even went to the Playboy Mansion for a charity party.\n\nThe plan…\nAfter some years in Hollywood, I missed Asia. But I didn’t want to work for anyone or be dependent on a job there. So, I thought about living off of passive income. But how to do that takes lot of planning. I had saved some money but not nearly enough to invest and live off of.  By chance, I went to a three day Robert Kiyosaki real estate seminar. They gave us a bag of books that included a goal planning book and other texts.  It had numerous worksheets that I completed in detail.\n\nI set up a five year investment plan that would give me a base income once I achieved my goals for enough income to live off of in the country I was moving to. The country I chose to move to has a much lower cost of living than the US which makes this plan easier to achieve and maintain. \n\nNow each of these steps can be broken down into chapters of a book but this is enough to get started and also provide a framework to move forward in your research.\n\nI read a lot. I listened to podcasts, anything. Robert Kiyosaki, Tony Robbins, Napoleon Hill, and anyone else on real estate and financial investing. Stocks, options, forex, online ecommerce, you name it! I read about frugal living as well.\n\nNext, I accepted and planned on living a modest, frugal life during this five year time to help achieve my goals. It’s a complete change of mindset. Consumerism is American. Buying what you want, when you want, and for whatever reason you want is the American way. You want a big new truck but don’t need a big new truck? Buy it anyway. I changed my thinking about what I wanted and what I needed.\n\nI could afford a new car, but I kept the one I had because it was paid off. So, no car payment and cheaper insurance. \nI could afford a nice two bedroom apartment or even a house, but I lived in small studio in a nice area. It was modestly furnished and I kept it that way. I wasn't a big clothes type person so I saved money on that. I didn’t drink hardly at all, so no sacrifice needed there\n\nI cancelled my cable, so another bill gone. I read a lot or exercised instead. I had a motorcycle at the time so I rode with friends and did other motorcycle events like shows and charity rides. \n\nI worked at a well-paying government job that gave a lot of overtime so I worked 8-10 hours a week of OT. Not a lot, it was the most I wanted to do in that type of job. If I didn’t have OT choices, I would have gotten a part-time job instead.\n\nI shopped at dollar stores. If they didn't have what I wanted, I went to a discount store. I rarely shopped at regular stores anymore but I still got the same things and didn't feel any negative change in my life. I did shop at the more expensive health food stores because I wanted to eat healthy, but I was careful about how I spent my money there too. Co-workers used to tease me about shopping at dollar stores until I took them there and they realized they could buy the same things for a fraction of the price.
