La palabra lesbiana se deriva de Lesbos, la isla griega que fue casa de la poetiza Safo en el siglo V a. C. (es decir que ella vivió hace poco más de 2 mil 500 años). La poca obra que tenemos de esta mujer describe la vida durante esa época y cómo Safo estaba a cargo de un grupo de mujeres para instruirlas. Es también un anglicismo de origen occitano (y no del inglés).
