      "body": "![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf8gUeokEhH4BVw9bYKyXtzXBvJVefDcakJttt5hLeSuY/image.png)\n\n2016년은 메이저리그 역사상 경기당 홈런이 2번째로 많은 시즌이었다. 1위가 스테로이드로 얼룩진 시대였음을 감안한다면 지난해의 홈런 숫자는 역대 최고 수준이라고 볼 수 있다. 그런데 올해의 홈런 페이스는 지난해를 훌쩍 뛰어넘고 있다.\n\n역대 최고의 홈런시즌\n\n올해 9이닝당 평균 홈런은 1.28개로 지난해의 1.17개보다 9.4% 늘어났다(현지 6월 21일 기준). 팀당 약 80경기를 소화한 지금 남은 경기에서 9이닝당 홈런이 1.10개 미만으로 떨어지지 않는다면 역대 최다 홈런을 기록하는 시즌이 될 전망이다.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRqBd8dSgGgpR5zaWDEyh1P5BYRJmnqfimqFmRPa3hZyz/image.png)\n\n2014년 이후 메이저리그의 홈런은 급증하기 시작했다. 이미 현지 여러 언론에서 홈런의 증가에 대해 다양한 의견이 나오고 있다. 공인구에 손을 댔을 것이라는 의견이 많았지만 최근에는 수그러들었다.\n\n그 대신 부각되고 있는 것이 ‘플라이볼 혁명’이다. 최근 홈런이 증가하기 시작한 시점부터 뜬공의 비중이 점차적으로 증가해왔기 때문이다. 게다가 우연인지 몰라도 이는 스탯캐스트 데이터가 공개된 시점과 겹친다.\n\n스탯캐스트는 카메라와 레이더를 이용, 투구와 타구를 더 정밀하게 포착해 수많은 데이터를 제공한다. 각 구단과 분석가들은 이 데이터를 분석하기 시작했으며, 그중 가장 많은 관심을 끌고 있는 것이 타구 속도(Exit Velocity)와 타구 발사각도(Launch Angle)이다.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbYnKZGqGu4fEsUbCaMyTLCkrEadBE2cLTF63dMJoYE9B/image.png)\n타구각도 측정이 가능해진 스탯캐스트의 등장(사진=MLB.com)\n\n타구 발사각도가 공개되면서 분석가들은 최적의 발사각도를 찾기 시작했다. 그 결과 적정 각도로 공을 띄우면 좋은 성적으로 이어진다는 것을 발견했다. 데이터가 공개된 2015년부터 지금까지 타구 발사각도는 조금씩 상승해왔다(2015~17년 10.1도 → 10.8도 → 10.9도).\n\n이것이 유의미한 수준의 변화일까? 타구 발사각도만 보면 큰 의미를 부여하기는 어렵다. 하지만 타구 종류에 변화가 생기기 시작했다.\n\n2015년부터 매년 직선타의 비율은 줄어들고 뜬공 비율은 증가했다(직선타 2015년 26.5% → 2017년 24.9%, 뜬공19.8% → 22.4%). 타자들의 타격 스타일에 변화가 생겼다고 유추해 볼 수 있다.\n\n \n\n테드 윌리엄스의 타격 이론\n\n명예의 전당에 헌액된 2루수 조 모건은 타구를 여러 곳으로 보내는 스프레이 히팅과 공을 결대로 치는 레벨 스윙보다는 공을 당겨치는 풀히팅과 공을 띄우는 미세한 어퍼컷 스윙이 더 고차원적인 스윙이라고 말한 바 있다. 그의 이야기를 듣고 떠오르는 선수가 있다. ‘타격의 신’으로 불리는 테드 윌리엄스다.\n\n윌리엄스는 그의 저서인 ‘타격의 과학(The Science of Hitting)’에서 이상적인 스윙은 투구의 각도에 맞춘 업 스윙이라고 밝혔다. 바로 어퍼컷 스윙이다. 그는 선수 시절 극단적인 풀히터(Pull Hitter)로 알려져 있다. 1940~50년대에 활약한 윌리엄스와 1960~70년대의 모건은 비슷한 타격지론을 가지고 있는 것이다.\n\n많은 타격코치들은 타격의 신이 강조하는 이상적인 타격보다, 많은 직선타를 만들어낼 수 있는 다운 스윙을 강조해왔다. 그러나 스탯캐스트의 등장이 이런 인식을 바꾸고 있다. 변화의 시작이 바로 직선타의 비중이 줄고 뜬공의 비중이 늘어난 점이다. 타자들의 스윙 스타일에 조금씩 어퍼컷 스윙의 비중이 높아지고 있다고 볼 수 있다.\n\n하지만 어퍼컷 스윙만 늘었다고 해서 홈런이 급격하게 증가할 수는 없다. 현재 홈런이 늘어난 가장 큰 원인은 “담장을 넘어가는 뜬공의 비율(HR/FB%)”이 늘었다는 점이다(2015년 10.6% → 2016년 13.7% → 2017년 17.7%). 상식적으로 생각할 때 뜬공이 홈런이 될 가능성이 이 정도로 급격히 증가하기란 쉽지 않다. 공인구 조작설이 대두되는 것도 무리는 아니다.\n\n여기서 짚고 넘어갈 점이 있다. 스탯캐스트는 타구 발사각도와 함께 타구속도 정보도 제공한다. 과거와 달리 이제는 뜬공의 타구속도를 확인할 수 있다는 점이다. 분석 결과 뜬공이 홈런이 되려면 타구속도는 최소 93~94mph(마일/시)가 나와야 한다.\n\n강한 타구가 홈런이 된다는 사실을 모르는 타자는 없을 것이다. 하지만 본인의 타구가 어느 정도의 속도와 발사각도를 가졌는지 아는 타자는 없다. 이제는 데이터를 통해 이를 알 수 있게 되었다. 직선타를 많이 치던 타자들은 직선타를 뜬공으로 바꾸기 위해, 90mph의 타구속도를 기록하던 타자들은 94mph 이상의 타구를 만들어 내기 위해 노력할 것이다. 실제로 뜬공의 타구속도는 증가했다(2015년 90.1mph → 2017년 91.5mph).\n\n빠른 타구속도를 만들어 내기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 힘을 길러내는 것이다. 그리고 한가지가 더 있으니, 공을 당겨치는 것이다. 이는 모건과 윌리엄스의 타격 이론에 부합한다.\n\n올해 뜬공의 비율은 2015년과 비교해 1.13배로 늘었다. 2015년에 100개의 뜬공이 나왔다면 올해는 113개의 뜬공이 나오고 있는 셈이다. 그런데 당겨친 뜬공의 비율은 무려 1.32배 증가했다. 같은 기간 홈런은 1.26배 늘어났으니 홈런보다도 더 높은 비율로 증가한 것이다.\n\n일반적으로 당겨친 타구는 그렇지 않은 타구보다 타구속도와 비거리에서 월등하다. 올해 뜬공(91.5mph)보다 당겨친 뜬공(94.2mph)의 타구속도가 훨씬 빠르며, 이는 각도만 맞는다면 담장을 넘기기에 충분하다.\n\n뿐만 아니라 메이저리그의 모든 구장은 홈에서 가운데 담장까지의 거리보다 좌우측까지의 거리가 짧다. 대부분의 구장이 홈에서 가운데 담장까지의 거리가 400피트가 넘는 반면에, 좌우측 폴대까지의 거리는 330피트 전후를 나타내고 있다. 같은 뜬공이라도 가운데로 날아간 360피트짜리 타구는 플라이 아웃이 되지만 당겨친 타구는 담장을 넘어갈 수 있는 것이다.\n\n올해 당겨친 타구의 HR/FB%는 무려 41.4%에 달한다. 당겨친 뜬공을 5개 만들어내면 그 중에 2개 이상은 담장을 넘어갔다는 얘기가 된다. 더욱 놀라운 사실은 이런 홈런의 비중이 전체 홈런의 42.8%에 달한다는 점이다.\n\n당겨친 홈런의 비중은 스탯캐스트가 등장한 이래 계속해서 증가해왔다(2015~2017년 30.7% → 36.4% → 42.8%). 2년간 무려 1.39배 늘어난 것인데, 같은 기간 당겨친 뜬공이 1.32배 증가했으니 당겨친 뜬공이 증가한 만큼 홈런도 증가를 한 것이다.\n\n보통 뜬공은 담장을 넘어가지 않으면 안타가 될 가능성이 낮기 때문에 안타 확률이 높은 직선타를 코치들이 요구하는 경향이 있었다. 실제로 뜬공과 직선타의 BABIP(인플레이된 타구의 타율)는 각각 1할대 초반과 6할대 중반으로 차이가 난다. 하지만 장타율을 계산해보면 얘기는 달라진다. 다음 표에서 보듯 당겨친 뜬공을 만들어 장타를 통해 쉽게 점수를 낼 수 있다면, 직선타보다 낮은 BABIP을 만회하는 좋은 결과일 것이다.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVXd3nRU7eHE8RALt72JyY2KjpiKjrv22iedkqUUc9E91/image.png)\n\n최근 몇 년간 홈런이 증가한 구단들 대부분이 비슷한 변화를 보여왔다. 올해 최강의 타선을 자랑하는 워싱턴 내셔널스는 2015년에 비해 당겨친 뜬공이 1.87배나 늘었다. 탬파베이 레이스는 스탯캐스트가 공개되기 이전부터 당겨친 뜬공이 많았고, 홈런은 꾸준히 증가해왔다(2014~17년 117개 → 167개 → 216개 → 249개). 특히 올해는 전체 홈런의 55%를 당겨친 뜬공으로 만들어냈다. 2015년에 이미 당겨친 뜬공 비율은 리그 평균의 1.29배에 달했다.\n\n올해 내셔널리그 홈런 선두를 달리고 있는 코디 벨린저는 다른 홈런타자들에 비해서 홈런의 비거리가 짧은데도 불구하고 홈런 선두를 달리고 있다. 그 이유는 그의 홈런 중 75%가 당겨친 홈런이기 때문이다. 벨린저는 무려 18개의 홈런을 우측 담장으로 날려 보냈다. 올해 10개 이상의 홈런을 기록한 타자 중에 벨린저의 홈런 비거리는 전체 69위에 불과하다.\n\n \n\n여전히 남아있는 공인구 의혹\n\n스탯캐스트를 통해서 당겨친 뜬공의 증가가 홈런 증가로 이어졌음을 설명할 수 있게 됐다. 하지만 이는 2015년 이후의 부분만 해당하고, 스탯캐스트 데이터가 공개되지 않은 2014년 대비 2015년의 홈런 증가의 이유는 분석하기 어렵다. 바로 이 부분 때문에 공인구 조작 의혹은 여전히 해소되지 않는다.\n\n한 가지 확실한 점은, 스탯캐스트의 등장이 타자들의 이상적인 타격을 구체화하며 야구 발전에 기여했다는 것이다. 앞으로도 데이터를 통해 타격능력의 향상이 지속될지 지켜보는 것도 흥미로운 일이다.\n\n※ 본 글은 작년 6월에 작성된 글입니다.",
