[HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) often is understood as just a blogging platform but [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) is more than the blogging interface. It is also a blockchain that stores, not only blog posts and comments, but also other data, like [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) game data.\n\n![Picture1.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXZTWRHG9RdkK3hnx42AJpt4au2PUetcgekvYQ75YLCYg/Picture1.png)\n\nWith [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) being the official blockchain for [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5), updates from the team are published on the [Splinterlands blog](https://peakd.com/@splinterlands?ref=handtalk5).\n\nYou can also earn [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) tokens yourself by blogging about [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) and receiving upvotes from other accounts. Be sure to join the social media challenge for juicy upvotes from the game’s official account. You can find the social media challenge on the [Splinterlands blog](https://peakd.com/@splinterlands?ref=handtalk5).\n\nThere are no gas fees on [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) but you need resource credits to transact with the blockchain. These are earned by staking [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5), or converting it into Hive Power as this is called around here. Having more Hive Power gives you more resource credits. Resource credits regenerate over time, so using the blockchain is free basically. Also, when using your account for [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) only the game will delegate Hive Power to buyers of the Summoner’s Spellbook, so that you don’t need to worry about this stuff, if it sounds too technical.\n\n![separator_dec.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXzZvBpUEC4N1ZfMQLcTS2Lo71xJax6gJkwKHHfb4F93V/separator_dec.png)\n\n# SPT (Splintertalk)\n\n[HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) has many blogging frontends and one of them is [Splintertalk.io](https://www.splintertalk.io/). This frontend will only show you [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) posts related to [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5). Technically, these are normal [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) posts with the tag #SPT.\n\nUsing this tag will on your [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) posts, will earn you SPT tokens in addition to [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) coins when somebody upvotes your posts.\n\n![Picture2.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmX7iwi9tJfUXt2nCqv2tSm6PzYuQEVBHSjtyiEHjekt1n/Picture2.png)\n\nSPT tokens were lacking a use-case for years and were dirt cheap consequently. But with the introduction of the SPS airdrop, they started counted towards airdrop points and the SPT price skyrocketed.\n\nYou can also use SPT to purchase collectible [NFTs on the Splintertalk outpost](https://www.splintertalk.io/nfts/). These NFTs do not integrate with the game and are just a gimmick for collectors.\n\nSPT can be traded for [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) coins on [Hive-Engine](https://hive-engine.com/).\n\n![separator_dec.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXzZvBpUEC4N1ZfMQLcTS2Lo71xJax6gJkwKHHfb4F93V/separator_dec.png)\n\n# DEC (Dark Energy Crystals)\n\nAfter purchasing the summoner’s spellbook, DEC can earned by winning [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) battles. You can also earn DEC from daily reward chests, season end reward chests or by burning cards. Selling cards will also result in a payout in DEC.\n\nDEC was once meant to be a somewhat ‘stable’ token soft-pegged at DEC 1000:1 USD. Having a target value for DEC would make using it as in-game currency easier. The peg was soft-enforced by two mechanisms. \n\n1) The team would accept DEC at this rate for all purchases made in the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) shop. Note that at this time DEC was trading 30-20 % below this soft-peg, so using DEC as currency would result in some massive discounts which was great.\n2) The pool of DEC shared among active players who win battles increases when the market value of DEC is trading above the soft-peg. This was meant to stabilize DEC by inflation. Likewise, players would earn less DEC when the token was trading below the soft-peg. Before this change the amount of DEC distributed was a fixed number not taking into account the amount of players or its market value.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmVHExXNVNCJN8zL7YZmAq76CbDVxJHzmq82hNQ5odBnMT/image.png)\n\nHolding DEC owns you (the most out of all [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) assets in an expense to drop ratio) airdrop points. This means you will get SPS for holding DEC. This has led to the price of DEC going 15x above its soft-peg. The two measures above are thus outdated and have failed to stabilize the token.\n\nBut the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) team has always been great in reacting to changing variables in the market and they are now rolling back the first measure. They will accept DEC at market value for payments going on for future purchases as anything else would be unreasonable.\n\nAs for the second measure, my personal opinion is that we might keep it in place. The principle of ‘print more when above peg, less when below’ only works when assuming a ‘correct’ market price of DEC. The same mechanic still works if that price target shifts. Assuming the ‘correct’ price would be 1000DEC:10USD we would still see more printed when DEC trades above and less when it trades below this ‘target value’.\n\n![separator_dec.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXzZvBpUEC4N1ZfMQLcTS2Lo71xJax6gJkwKHHfb4F93V/separator_dec.png)\n\n# Credits\n\nPurchasing starter packs and booster packs directly through paypal or credit card caused potential regulatory issues because we are exchanging fiat money for crypto assets. This also made it difficult (impossible?) to get the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) into official app stores.\n\nCredits were the solution to this in that you are now using fiat to purchase credits. Credits are a non-crypto virtual balance, just like in any other Android/iOS game. Users in the mobile apps are not exposed to any crypto stuff (you need the website for that).\n\n![Picture3.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmY7XE4aZBJsTcNU9jWhxs3oGQAsoDWYZd1H1T1tq9ZTh8/Picture3.png)\n\nCredits also have the benefit of being truly stable. 1000 credits will always be worth 1 USD. As credits don’t expire, I find [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) credits a great way to keep my Google play store credits from expiring.\n\nTo avoid the regulatory issues mentioned above, credits are non-transferable and cannot be converted back to fiat.\n\n![separator_dec.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXzZvBpUEC4N1ZfMQLcTS2Lo71xJax6gJkwKHHfb4F93V/separator_dec.png)\n\n# SPS (Splintershards)\n\nSplintershards is the token that got the hype going. All assets above were native to the [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) blockchain which is, to put it mildly, flying somewhat under the radar. And while DEC does have an Ethereum brigde, it also went widely unnoticed outside of the [HIVE](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) community. But Splintershards operate on the Binance Smart Chain and thus are directly exposed to the large audience of the ongoing DeFi, NFT and ICOs hypes.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPW8y21GrXa5EAJr27ec7sYZX82b94VXbqqczWXq7LDu5/image.png)\n\nWhile Dark Energy Crystals are meant to be a currency, Splintershards are meant to be a governance token. This means that by holding SPS and staking it on validators (Oracles) you can have votes in how the future development of the game should look like.\n\nA card is too powerful? Start an SPS proposal to have it weakened. The reward payouts are unfair? Start an SPS proposal to have it balanced. This is a gigantic step towards the game’s vision to create a decentralized metaverse. This is not just marketing talk. [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) used NFTs to give true ownership of the playing cards to their players 3 years before the NFT hype. When I joined the game in early 2019 (a lot can happen in 3 years), I didn’t even know the term non-fungible token. Decentralizing the game mechanics is a logical further step towards this vision.\n\nSPS can currently be earned from the ongoing airdrop. A snapshot of all your [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) assets is taken every day and awards you with an amount of SPS in proportion to that. SPS can also be earned by participating in tournaments. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars to be earned here, so staking requirements to get into these tournaments are quite high, encouraging players to hold and stake SPS instead of selling them. Staking also earns you more SPS with an return rate of around 60% currently.\n\nThere is an insane amount of future functionality to be expected from SPS. For example, SPS stakers will start receiving vouchers next week, allowing them to participate in the pre-sale of Chaos Legion booster packs. Some (unknown) time in the future, you will also be able to direct your SPS stake towards certain players (no risk, they are still your SPS) and if that player wins battles, you and the player get additional SPS as rewards.\n\n![separator_dec.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXzZvBpUEC4N1ZfMQLcTS2Lo71xJax6gJkwKHHfb4F93V/separator_dec.png)\n\n# Conclusion\n\nI hope this blog cleared up why there are ‘so many’ different kind of coins and tokens in the Splinterverse. You can see that there is quite complex economics at work in this game. The different kind of assets correlate with each other (cards can be burnt for DEC, DEC airdrop SPS etc.) and its fascinating to see all of this unfolding and be a part of it.\n\nIt is not ‘too late’ to get in. The SPS airdrop goes on for an entire year. New players and investors from other blockchains flocking in who did not follow the massive development roadmap and changes for the past three years may be overwhelmed by the different possibilities and kinds of assets that exist in the Splinterverse. \n\nAs more and more people are asking questions like ‘What’s the difference between DEC and SPS?’ in Discord, I wanted to create an overview of the different types of assets and explain how they are working together. The core of the game are collectible trading cards, so before looking at tokens and other assets, I am creating this post, to give you an overview over the different card editions and when they were released.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Alpha Edition\n\n[Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) is a collectible card game and cards were the first asset type available for purchase even before there was a playable game to them. As these were distributed in the alpha development stage of the game, the first card edition is called ‘Alpha’ edition.\n\n![Picture1.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmbXssW2cKTz3kFj3gNsMemhk49ERyG7MEUHDR4Mt5M3s6/Picture1.png)\n\nAlpha edition packs originally cost $2 USD and like all other packs they contain 5 cards with one card of ‘rare’ or higher rarity guaranteed. Like all other packs up to Untamed and Dice they have sold out in the official store and can now only be purchased on secondary markets from other players who still own sealed packs.\n\n![Picture2.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPei6Z4t2tbkuT6Swaks2xaf7MvGVXD6fDKW3mUT4dHfN/Picture2.png)\n\nAlpha cards have the highest burn value. This means you can ‘destroy’ a card in your possession by burning it and will receive a set amount (the burn value) of DEC for doing so. Burn value also equals collection power. So, having Alpha cards in your collection makes it easier to achieve a higher level of collection power and progress through the leagues. \n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Beta Edition & Essence Orbs\n\nWhen the game became playable and Alpha cards had been sold out, the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) team released the Beta edition.\n\n![Picture3.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmWmLq8fjVodEQQF2Cy1UWWcdjx366d9vHC3wJCDawe6ba/Picture3.png)\n\nBeta cards were a copy of Alpha cards with a higher number of packs sold (for $2 each) and consequently lower (but still considerable) burn value/collection power per card. An exciting addition made to the Beta edition were the first (non-dragon) legendary summoners that did not exist in the Alpha edition.\n\n![Picture4.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmeCyy2CKjGusXaE7Sgqn3cEunbUu18ozjiR7ohvLD9xyL/Picture4.png)\n\nWith the statement from the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) team that cards are not going to be reprinted, Alpha and Beta should be the only editions containing identical monsters while other editions will always bring new cards and keep the older editions unique.\n\nAlong Beta packs, a new sort of special card packs was introduced. This special edition contained a smaller collection of cards that were meant to enhance gameplay and provide a DEC sink. A DEC sink is an application that burns DEC and thus provides additional utility to the token. Essence Orbs could only be purchased for 2,500 DEC each. Fiat payments or payments with other cryptos were not possible.\n\n![Picture5.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmStUDfdMuuruQQc41PKRPRiUQjqHjbUurQt9ExBYC8GoP/Picture5.png)\n\nWhat [I never understood](https://peakd.com/steemmonsters/@handtalk5/why-is-the-winds-of-change-collection-considered-promo-cards?ref=handtalk5) was why the Orb cards were considered promo cards, especially since the later Dice cards were granted their own edition.\n\n![Picture6.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmNggakwLDiT9tcShyE2mw82krprs5N5qBcFikThvaKSbp/Picture6.png)\n\nThis makes it a bit complicated to keep them apart from actual promo cards that were handed out during events or as bonuses during sales events.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Untamed Edition & Azmare Dice\n\nAfter cards were introduced with Alpha and gameplay had been proven with Beta, Untamed was the first edition that sounded like a full release. Untamed packs, like the previous packs, were available for purchase at $2 each.\n\n![Picture7.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmbqKmiBoTw79qNvSfZsZznjDEDWpcUbi5QL2Z4bYGGV1K/Picture7.png)\n\nAs the amount of Untamed packs was significantly higher than the Beta supply, burn value/collection power have been greatly decreased for these cards.\n\n![Picture8.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmNLkXpRVRjQZoqFku5XaDWNKXYusmrnPuSsFrjWaNygXB/Picture8.png)\n\nUntamed was the first full new set of monsters and summoners, in that it was playable standalone without necessarily owning any of the previous cards. Of course, having those would give you greater choices in deck building and thus an advantage on the battlefield.\n\nAfter Essence Orbs sold out, the Untamed edition got their own special edition called Azmare Dice.\n\n![Picture9.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmZoARX3QTinrT5r6ehqY6LCergpqax5oJZ6gRYQ4A7daU/Picture9.png)\n\nDice were purchasable for 3,000 DEC each. Like with Orbs, other currencies could not be used and all proceeds were immediately burned.\n\n![Picture10.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmSw3T2Tyy9aPp3Cf38pzPo1hmJmYqbVmymarHDNRSAPDE/Picture10.png)\n\nWhat makes the Dice edition special is that the only ‘rare’ cards contained in this set were all summoners. With a ‘rare’ or better card guaranteed per pack, this means you will either get a guaranteed summoner per pack opening, or otherwise an Epic or Legendary monster in its stead.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Chaos Legion & Rift Watchers\n\nAll of the above editions sold out months ago. Since then the only way to acquire cards is by buying them from other players or renting them from the rental market.\n\nThis will change when Chaos Legion goes live. Chaos Legion is the new full edition following after Untamed.\n\n![Picture11.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmW5iPUNBF1qYVczN4KhHoKT7T1Eq6xxrvPAtPpXGKgRfR/Picture11.png)\n\nDue to the recent 10x in DEC value and player amount, the total pack supply was again raised to now 15 million and burn value/collection power of cards was decreased again along with that change.\n\nNot much is known about Chaos Legion except that the pre-sale will start October 18th and will be going on for a full month. In order to purchase packs during the pre-sale, which will sell for $4 each, you need to hand in one Voucher token per pack purchased. Vouchers will be airdropped over the course of the pre-sale to stakers of the SPS token.\n\nPacks cannot be opened until (an unknown time) after the pre-sale when the full edition becomes playable.\n\nAzmare Dice will be replaced by a new mini-series called Rift Watchers (no artwork on the site yet). Like Dice and Orbs before them, Rift Watchers will only be available for DEC. As the value of DEC has greatly appreciated recently, the amount of DEC for Rift Watchers will stay at the Dice price of 3,000 DEC (if I remember the AMA correctly, that is) per pack.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Promo cards\n\nWe already touched Promo cards when talking about Orbs. Promo cards is a category for every card that does not fit anywhere else. For example they were handed out as bonuses during the first kickstarter event, from the now retired Mystery Potion or as airdrop during the last Bitcoin halfing celebration.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Reward Cards\n\nReward cards are a major factor in the Play-to-Earn aspect of the game. Reward cards can be earned by completing daily quests and bi-weekly seasons. They have been around since Beta and have evolved alongside the main editions as can be seen by the different card frames and burn values that reward cards implement. \n\n![Picture13.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmSk8uujUeA57jiQ1LVNXuAK6V5yVCyH8R6hsJZnkEGmjU/Picture13.png)\n\nIn order to keep reward cards scarce and valuable, all of them have a maximum print limit. Once reached, the cards can only be acquired by being purchased from other players. Be sure to check out [this handy tool](https://kiokizz.github.io/Splinterlands/rewardCards.html) to learn which reward cards are still printing and how many percent of their print limit have already been handed out.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# Gladius Cases\n\nGladius Cases give Gladiator cards that cannot be used in ranked battle or tournaments. They can only be used in Guild Brawls.\n\nThis addition has turned Guild Brawls into a sort of game in the game, because you also need to participate and rank well in Brawls to earn so-called Merits. Gladius Cases can only be purchased with those Merits. Other currency options are not available.\n\n![Picture14.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPyzdj7N5UAKVAtMJ4VwUzMSTn9pF3ztutxKRoFtq18mw/Picture14.png)\n\nThere are a few special aspects about this addition. The most remarkable is that all of these assets (Merits, Gladius Packs, Gladiator cards) are soulbound. This means, that they cannot be transferred between accounts. If you want Gladiator Cards, you have to earn them in the arena!\n\nWhile not being transferrable, Gladiator cards can still be burned for DEC at Untamed burn rates and contribute to collection power. This makes them a valuable part in the Play-to-Earn aspect of the game.\n\n![Picture15.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmbyucH7xHKTPEVP5E7UCTP8ANeaqvizJ9SE92St5U87LK/Picture15.png)\n\nThe overpowered Gladiator cards have greatly changed the meta of brawl battles. All of them have the so-called Bloodlust ability that increases each of their stats by 1, every time they kill an enemy. Because they are this overpowered, only one Gladiator can be used per match and team. The idea is to use them as a general who leads the other monsters into the arena.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\nThe [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) team is really doing there best in releasing new cards that complement with the existing ones rather than obsoleting them. And while some forms of the so-called power-creep cannot be entirely prevented, older cards are getting bonuses like higher burn values, additional DEC rewards per battle win or increased productivity on the future land expansion of the game.\n\nI am excited for what is to come with and after Chaos Legion and am more than glad to have been a part of all this since the middle of Beta. This is a new in-game currency that can be spent in the guild store (a new guild building) once it reaches level 2.\n\nWait, if this launched yesterday, how can I already have Merits and open Gladius packs? What started as a mere **2D battler** (a game mode that is still active and supported) is now expanding into the Metaverse. \n\nThere is also an **Adventure mode**, that is currently under construction. In this mode you send your Mons on an Adventure and after a time they return bringing home some loot they found on their way. Sending a Mon on an adventure cost a gas fee, that became quite imbalanced towards the earned loot. New players means there's onboarding to do. It is no secret that the official team is busy with scaling matters to adapt to this rapid growth of their game. They are doing a great job with this but things like onboarding new players are suffering under this stress. \n\nSome long-term members have now taken on the role of moderators to help new players with their questions and other Mavericks (people who spent more than 1,000 USD on booster packs through the official site) have been helping out as well. I hosted a [Q&A session](https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@handtalk5/splinterlands-q-and-a-answering-newbie-questions-on-discord-for-1-hour?ref=handtalk5) myself some days ago. But for those players who stumble across this game on the internet and want to be given some hard facts before buying into it, I feel like there should be a consolidated resource giving a basic overview of what [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) is and how it works.\n\nI tried to write a short summary on what I would like to know as a new players and the kind of stuff I'm asking before joining another Play-To-Earn game.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# What kind of game is it?\n[Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) is a collectible card game. You know, the same genre as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic the Gathering, or Pokémon. There is a major difference though in that [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) is also an auto-battler with variable match rulesets.\n\nUnlike the other TCGs (Trading Card Games), you do not create a deck of 30 cards or so and then play turn for turn with drawing another card at the start of each round. Instead, when being matched to an opponent, you will be given a randomly generated ruleset and have to pick a summoner and 1-6 monsters out of your total collection that you feel fit this ruleset best in 2:30 min time. Once you and your opponent submitted your teams, the match plays out itself with monsters taking turns attacking and using their [abilities](https://splinterlands.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Ability). The last team standing, wins.\n\nCheck out the [Splinterlands Wiki](https://splinterlands.fandom.com/wiki/Splinterlands_Wiki) for the different [rulesets](https://splinterlands.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Rule_Sets).\n\n# How is crypto involved?\nThe matches are submitted on the [Hive blockchain](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) to make sure game results are immutably stored and cannot be altered by the admins or anyone else. One of the great things about [Hive](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5) are feeless transactions. You only need resource credits to transact on this chain but these regenerate over time and the [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) will stake enough $HIVE to your account automatically so that you do not need to worry about those. \n\nThe trading cards are NFTs that can be collected, sold, earned and merged/blended into higher level versions of a card.\n\nThere are also other tokens for LAND and TOTEMS which will convert to NFTs once the land expansion is released. Right now the tokens are claim rights that can be traded on [Hive-Engine](https://hive-engine.com/) or [Atomic Hub](https://splinterlands.atomichub.io/). Even unopened card packs can be converted to crypto tokens when you intend to sell them or move them across chains.\n\nWinning games earns you [Dark Energy Crystals ($DEC)](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/dark-energy-crystals/). This is a currency token used for buying [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) assets in the game. You can also earn DEC from completing the daily quests and season rewards (approx. every 15 days).\n\nBrand new and probably cause for the explosion of involvement in the game is the new governance token [Splintershards ($SPS)](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/splinterlands/). This token will be used in the future to govern gameplay aspects of the game. For instance the health or attack points of a card could change, if Oracles that are elected by $SPS stakers decide on it. This new token crosses another bridge between blockchains being minted on the Binance Smart Chain (not on [Hive](https://peakd.com/register?ref=handtalk5)). Right now $SPS is still in an alpha phase where it does not have any use yet. This used to be my dollar-a-day game. Then recently things started to grow. Slowly at first, rewarding me with cards and $DEC worth about [35 USD in a week](https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@handtalk5/68-36-usd-earned-in-two-weeks-splinterlands-earnings-report?ref=handtalk5), then parabolically, allowing me to [claim over 250 USD per day](https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@handtalk5/claimed-usd263-25-today-start-living-off-splinterlands?ref=handtalk5). Admittedly, I was lucky enough to have had a big enough card collection before the card prices skyrocketed. This time it is featuring the \"Cave Slugs\".\n\nMy own Cave Slugs are only level 4 and don't harmonize too well with my gold to max level decks. With the current rise in card prices for the Untamed collection, I abandoned my goal of levelling them further up for the time being and listed them for rent, so that I might still earn a passive income from them. For that reason, today's match is fought with my alt account @kick-starter which does not hold any cards except for the virtual Spellbook cards. Cave Slugs are playable among that bunch. So this might be a good reference match for new players.\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n## About the card\n\nMax level Cave Slugs have three abilities: Opportunity, Scavenge (from level 6), and Slow (at max level). If you would like to learn more about these or other abilities, be sure to check the official \"[How to Play](https://splinterlands.com/?p=gameplay)\" pages.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmWRqiZ5nD2oKUnpSu17LSXtfBJNDrG8ttykhYz2TmWjg7/image.png)\n\n### Opportunity\nBefore the Untamed edition was released, the only card with the Opportunity ability was the Fiendish Harpy of the dragon splinter.\n\nGameplay was simpler back then. Your opponent would either attack your tank, or your back row monster. In some cases they might aim for the first distance monster using the Snipe ability but it was always possible to hide low HP monsters like the Vampire from enemy fire.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmTpoTu6js8gLNMyCpzQ5NSs1Gr8xUqqX3pYJacCzp4K8p/image.png)\n\nThis is where Opportunity came to spice things up. Targeting the monster with the lowest health, there suddenly was no safe spot in your own lines anymore. You would now need to find other ways of protection your low HP monsters, like working with Shields or buffs.\n\nWith 2 ATK points on level 1 and the Opportunity ability already active, the Cave Slug can be quite devastating in the lower leagues, taking out one enemy monster after the other.\n\n### Scavenger\n\nScavenger is also one of the newer abilities. The first card I remember having it was the Gelatinous Cube which was one of the late beta-frame reward cards.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXtGq5Nrz1W4pNcahF3sEcnX4vVK5oAxHhUCbn4HnibiK/image.png)\n\nA Scavenger monster earns 1 HP and increases its max HP each time another monster on the field dies. This is triggered by both friendly and enemy monsters. A good strategy with a team that focuses around a Scavenger monster would be to pick several low HP monsters over just one or two strong ones. These would die soon and serve as a sacrifice for the Scavenger.\n\nScavenger also goes along very well with Opportunity, which by targeting the lowest HP enemies, should get its first kills quick.\n\nPro-tip: Scavenger goes well with the Noxious Fumes ruleset.\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdm1VfNvJUQEkBV9bN1CexqvnrnJznaMrCM6q6TQwhicC/image.png)\nIn this ruleset, especially with low-mana caps, many monsters should fall quickly, allowing the Scavenger to pump its own health.\n\n### Slow\n\nHe who strikes first, kills first. Generally speaking, of course there are exceptions like where you kill yourself by striking first with a low HP magic monster and get that magic back in your face by the Magic Reflect ability (damn you, Fallen Spectre).\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmXDYGFLEGZEtVDW5q8tQGW3cNVHSjmw4yZvsHhYByuNmR/image.png)\n\nThe Slow ability can help you achieving the necessary swiftness to get those fast kills. It reduces the Speed of all enemy monsters by 1 point. Affecting the entire enemy team, this debuff can make a huge difference in battle.\n\nPersonally, though, I usually refrain from adding the extra final level to a card, if that level increases Speed only. I probably would have decided similarly would I have levelled up my Cave Slugs. Their stats are identical at level 9 and 10 except for the Slow ability.\n\nSo, why would I skip on such a powerful ability? I myself am one of the advocates of [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) and have published posts about their huge (still joinable) [SPS airdrop](https://www.publish0x.com/play-to-earn2/am-i-really-looking-at-a-82125-dollars-sps-airdrop-from-spli-xznnqyn?a=nXe0gNqVdx), [passive income through renting out your cards](https://www.publish0x.com/play-to-earn2/nft-rentals-v2-splinterlands-is-setting-new-standards-for-pa-xqmkqxv?a=nXe0gNqVdx) and the possibility of entirely [living off Splinterlands](https://www.publish0x.com/play-to-earn2/claimed-263-dollars-25-cents-today-start-living-off-splinter-xznnplz?a=nXe0gNqVdx).\n\nAll this is very lucrative and my Splinterfolio is growing hundreds of Dollars each day. However, that value is locked in NFTs and tokens and cannot be used as-is to pay your groceries or rent. So, for those of us who want to cash-out and treat themselves to something nice from their Splinterearnings, they will have to learn how to convert those assets into fiat money.\n\nThe guide I assembled here, is how I have been doing it for several months and how I know it works. With new exchange listings and trading pairs there may now be other, maybe even simpler possibilities. But I am sticking to old and tried. Holding the Spellbook is not required in the latter case, but as you can not earn rewards without it, you'd need to have gotten [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) assets from somewhere else (gift by another player for example). Just login with your keychain.\n- A [Binance](https://accounts.binance.com/en/register?ref=WJEDKVIR) account, verified and eligible for fiat-out payments\n\n![separatorspt.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYr81jxqZrqwcT3Jgmqh7c4fhiJXTUySxo2wrHheFnygE/separator-spt.png)\n\n# The Conversion Procedure\n\nIn a nutshell, what we will be doing is convert your [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com?ref=handtalk5) assets to HIVE and then convert HIVE to USDT in order to withdraw fiat from [Binance](https://accounts.binance.com/en/register?ref=WJEDKVIR). Let us start by looking at the different kinds of assets you may hold.\n\n## Trading Cards\nEveryone holding a spellbook earns these from their daily rewards or season end rewards. If you'd like to cash out, you'll need to list them on the market for other players to buy. If you are holding them in-game, go to your card inventory. Use the backpack symbol in the upper right to switch to the 'other items' view.\n\nFrom here you will use the three line symbol to tokenize your assets. I tracked my [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) earnings for the course of two weeks and found out that I had made 68.36 USD over that season.\n\nHaving spent most of my allowance as a kid on video games, I was openly excited about making as much money from playing [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) for two weeks as a new blockbuster release would have cost me back then.\n\nHowever, what has happened over the past few days/weeks has blown this completely out of perspective. There is no better day to emphasize how crazy things are right now than this Sunday as it is the end of another two-weeks season in [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5). Every two weeks [Splinterlands](https://splinterlands.com/?ref=handtalk5) resets the players' ratings to a full league below what they finished the Season in. For example Gold 1 goes down to Silver 1, Gold 2 goes down to Silver 2 and so on.\n\n![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdrwEkhFqqy7ja3pdup7X9pZWTJVm5HXrPrq4QECrKXG2/image.png)\n\nThe top players of each league receive DEC prize money but all other players do also get rewarded with a season reward in form of loot chests. These are the same as you earn from your daily rewards but the season rewards are much bigger. But the season rewards well compensate for it.\n\n# Claiming my Rewards\n\nMy main account finished the season in Champion 3, the gold foil one one league lower in Diamond 3. He scored top 15th place of all players last season. Needless to say, I got slaughtered. Meanwhile, my alt got crushed by @warrentrx who is also among the best 100 players and scored place 75 in the last season.\n\nHowever, only 12 players had to play round 1 (did I mention that I was unlucky with my main, already?) and my alt belonged to the group getting a bye into round 2. So, despite losing the first pairing, it still made it to rank 125 with a payout of 1250 DEC.
