| body | Facebook has recently been in the talks for the Cambridge Analytica data breach, which in turn shed light on a lot of other privacy issues and loopholes which were earlier only speculated by users. Infact, when the knowledge of the scandal was made public Facebook lost over USD $119Billion in its market value, in a day, that cost Mr. Zuckerburg a personal USD $17Billion also 3 Million users from Europe reportedly walked off the network! What I could incur from the official testimonies presented before Congress, or released to the Media is that data from over 87Million users, 70 Million of which were American citizen was harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a Political Consultancy firm and then used to influence the American Presidential Elections. This even on the surface level sounds just like what Terrorists do, just not digitally! Another major news for most of you would be that Facebook used to buy user data from as many as 6 data brokers which are DataLogix, Epsilon, Acxiom, Experian and Quantium. The details these data included is equally surprising, such as “Can you tolerate or like people with Darker colours”? Do you Breast, or Bottle feed your baby? But since the Cambridge Analytica data breach, they seem to have terminated the practice. How Does Facebook Spy on You and How to not Let it. Let’s not beat around the bush and directly introduce you to the ways the company tracks and records your moves and actions, and how to Stop Facebook from Spying on you. The most commonly accepted and rumored conspiracy theory around Facebook spying is – Microphones! Have you ever just been talking about Getting a new mixer, or just planning that trip to Japan with your friend, without any online activity related to either of them, and Facebook just starts showing you ads related to those? The most common explanation to this was, Facebook was listening to your Microphone at all times, which isn’t true but not completely false either. 1. Microphone? Facebook doesn’t “listen in” on all your conversations just throughout the day, but it “can” as is evident from the statement given by a Facebook spokesperson to NBC4i- “We use your microphone to identify the things you’re listening to or watching, based on the music and TV matches we’re able to identify.” It’s worth noting that they do not exactly spy on you and only use the Microphone when required for certain things to be possible with the app (like video recording), but then again the possibility of them being able to does creep me out. So how do those ads show up for products you’ve only been talking about? You need to understand that “Facebook” itself doesn’t show as many ads as individuals like us or corporations do. And these ads aren’t “individually” targeted (usually)¸and rather are targeted for groups. So if there’s an event happening in your neighborhood, even if you’re just “talking” about it, chances are other people from your locality of your age-group have searched for them online, some of your friends too maybe? Regardless of the people being or not being in one another’s friends’ lists, advertisers target these ads for localities, age-groups, and interests; and sometimes what you’ve been talking about coincides with the ads you see. How to Stop Facebook From Spying on your Microphone Both on iOS as well as on Android devices, the system administrators (you) have the supreme power over the apps, and the features or services those apps can access on your devices. As long as these options are turned on or off, no other options inside the apps matter. Hence, on Android Simply head over to Settings > Installed Apps > Facebook > Permissions > Microphone. Slide the microphone slider to “Off”. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1.jpg On iOS devices, Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone > Facebook and again slide it to off. Note that you can also turn off the permissions for Calendars, Cameras, Media and so on, and also you might as well want to turn off the Microphone permissions for Instagram, Facebook Messenger or other such apps as well. There are some other ways Facebook tracks or targets you as we’ll talk about next and you’ll see how almost each of those points can be used to spy on you without you even being on Facebook! 2. Location This isn’t even a secret anymore, Facebook “DOES” track your location. No excuses, it just outright DOES! This is why when you upload photos, it shows your location automatically which you can tap on to include with your post. The official explanation for this is- Location based content. So they can show you the nearest hotels, hospitals and everything else. Or just ads related to the location you’re at. Or that features such as “Friends nearby” require location tracking in order for Facebook to let you know, or your friends know about you when you’re close to them geographically. Although location tracking is another explanation for the Microphone myth, if you walk into an Adidas showroom and Facebook detects it, it may show you an Adidas ad next simply because of its knowledge of your interest in Adidas. Yet another explanation for the Microphone myth that can be linked to locations is, when Facebook detects you being at a new location, India per say, it’s advanced enough to know you’re most likely to visit the Taj Mahal, or India Gate and hence may show you ads related to those such as Travel agencies, Taxi services and so on even if you have only “talked” about going there. How to Stop Facebook from Spying on your Location On Android devices, users can go to Settings > Installed Apps > Facebook > Permissions and again turn the slider next to “Location” to Off. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/2.jpg On iOS devices, it’s Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Facebook > Never. 3. Off-Facebook Online Web Habits Facebook doesn’t just track you when you’re using the website or app, but also when you aren’t! Facebook makes use of “Pixels” which is basically how Facebook gathers information about your visits and actions on other websites. For e.g. when you visit website X and do not actually buy any product, but maybe just click on one, Facebook knows you did that. Or maybe when you added something to cart but didn’t purchase? Facebook can track that as well. Later advertisers can target those specified individuals according to their actions and it’s just one of the ways Facebook tracks users off-site. How to Stop Facebook from Using your Pixels to Target you Head over to the Facebook app, click on Settings > Ad Preferences > Ad Settings > and disable “Interest Based Ads”. If you don’t see the exact option, select “Ads based on Data from Partners” and disable it. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/3.jpg Another Alternative is using Addons like Ghostery. It can be used to check the trackers running on websites and lets you disable them. 4. Offline Purchases If you thought you’re only tracked online, you’re dead wrong! Everytime we purchase something, we enter our E-mail ID, name, number (atleast one of these) in order to redeem or increase our loyalty points. Facebook has access to the payment processors’ data, hence it knows exactly what’s there in your bag (as everything is included in the bill) and makes use of this data to show relevant or similar products in the ads. Similarly it also knows your spending ranges (amounts you generally spend), stores you frequent and so on, using these data it groups each user into its micro-categories. How to Stop Facebook from Spying on you Offline Considering how it’s not directly linked to Facebook, there’s no button you can simply press to stop this from happening. But, an easy way out would be to either stop using Loyalty cards, or link them to an E-mail ID, Cell number which isn’t associated with your Facebook account. Note that even then Facebook has ways of linking those purchases to you, but it should get you some wiggle room. 5. Calls, Text and Contact Tracking. This is yet another major, direct method Facebook tracks the very personal details of your life. It asks for permission to access your contacts when you first launch Facebook and most people simply click yes, which grants Facebook access to every contact in your list and also the permission to auto-check the list for new contacts and add them to its database. It also tracks call and text details such as who you talk to in real life, the duration of the call, time the call was made etc. Although note that it doesn’t “record or access” the call/text itself, meaning it doesn’t have access to “What” you talk about, but only the details of the call/text are stored. Those are some very private details and I’m positive none of you would like it on a platform which has faced as much criticism and legal actions on the Privacy front as Facebook. How to Stop Facebook from Spying on your Contacts List On Android Devices head over to Settings > Installed Apps > Facebook > Permissions > and turn the slider next to “Contacts” to off. Additionally, go to the Facebook App > Settings > Contacts Uploading and turn the auto-uploading to off. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/4-1.jpg Then also turn off the “Calls and Text history uploading” slider as well. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/4.jpg 6. Face Recognition Facebook’s Facial Recognition algorithm is one of the best in the world, it’s how Facebook knows who’s in a picture without anyone mentioning that person at all. And as the timing of this piece coincides with the currently trending #10YearChallenge, it’s speculated that this may actually be a gambit used by Facebook to refine and add more details, data about a person’s Face to its Facial Recog. Database. Kate O’Neill recently tweeted her reservations regarding the trend, in a pretty creative tweet. Bottomline, Face Recog. is definitely “progressive” but also privacy breaching to quite an extent. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/5.jpg Fortunately it’s easy to disable this, simply fire up your Facebook app, go to Settings > Facial Recognition > and turn the slider to off. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/6.jpg 7. Real Life Personal Documents The last major privacy breach that Facebook has designed is that it disables some accounts on various grounds, and asks for personal documents such as Driver’s license, social security number, Voter Card and so on to unlock the account. This would mean Facebook would literally get a hold of your real-life identity by the core, and unfortunately the only ways to stop Facebook from getting those details are: Be extremely careful as to not post violent, illegal posts so that the account doesn’t get banned in the first place. If it does get banned, it’s plausible to forget the account and start a new one (if possible) rather than ransoming those documents. Ways to Stop Facebook from Spying on you on PC. We’re done with almost everything that can be done on the Facebook website/app, here are just some more off-site ways you can use to stop the social media giant from getting too close to your personal life. 1. Separate, Anonymous Browsers Facebook tracks you, even when you’re on other tabs and websites, and even if you’re signed out of your Facebook accounts! Out of the many ways it’s done, the most common is Facebook’s likes and share buttons found on numerous websites for sharing articles, videos etc. The easiest way out of this is, using a different, clean browser on which you’ve never used Facebook, ever. The best options? Use one of the following: Tor browser Epic browser 2. Opt Out of Interest Based Ads Facebook let’s us opt out of its “Interest based ads”, so your interests will then be something of lesser importance to Facebook, and hence lesser trackers for you. OptOut for U.S Citizen – http://www.aboutads.info/choices/ OptOut for Canadian Citizen – http://youradchoices.ca/ OptOut for European Citizen – http://www.youronlinechoices.eu/ You should disable the ad-blockers and other cookie-restricting scripts if you have any for these sites to function properly. Also note that the U.S site which I tried, 8 times to be exact always showed an error saying my connection was too slow. And once I solved that, another message showed up saying I need to tweak some of my cookie settings. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/8.jpg 3. Browser Tweaking Here are some basic steps which can be followed in order to stop Facebook (and other sites) from getting your cookie data. On Google Chrome, Click on those three horizontal lines on the top-right corner and go to Settings > Content Settings > Cookies > and enable the “Block third-party cookies” option. https://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/9.jpg On Firefox, click on those horizontal lines on the top-right corner > options > Privacy and Security > Cookies and Site data > and choose the “Never” option for “Accept third party cookies and site data” option. Then, install the free Facebook Container addon to hammer in the final nail in the coffin of those Facebook algos spying on you. Final Words on How to Stop Facebook from Spying on You. So those were the 7 most common practices, methods how Facebook collects user data and tracks/ spies on them. Note that these 7 practices are only the cherry on the top as compared to the actual arsenal of privileges Facebook has when it comes to accessing or gathering user data, but those are well-hidden or just not as easily recognizable. Even then, if we can stop Facebook from spying on us even on these basic levels I believe a lot of our privacy would be saved from becoming rows of data on someone’s ledger. Do let me know if there are other insights you have on the topic, questions, solution, or just Intel is appreciated as well. |

Or just ads related to the location you’re at.\n\nOr that features such as “Friends nearby” require location tracking in order for Facebook to let you know, or your friends know about you when you’re close to them geographically.\n\nAlthough location tracking is another explanation for the Microphone myth, if you walk into an Adidas showroom and Facebook detects it, it may show you an Adidas ad next simply because of its knowledge of your interest in Adidas.\n\nYet another explanation for the Microphone myth that can be linked to locations is, when Facebook detects you being at a new location, India per say, it’s advanced enough to know you’re most likely to visit the Taj Mahal, or India Gate and hence may show you ads related to those such as Travel agencies, Taxi services and so on even if you have only “talked” about going there.\n\nHow to Stop Facebook from Spying on your Location\nOn Android devices, users can go to Settings > Installed Apps > Facebook > Permissions and again turn the slider next to “Location” to Off.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/2.jpg\n\nOn iOS devices, it’s Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Facebook > Never.\n\n3. Off-Facebook Online Web Habits\nFacebook doesn’t just track you when you’re using the website or app, but also when you aren’t!\n\nFacebook makes use of “Pixels” which is basically how Facebook gathers information about your visits and actions on other websites. For e.g. when you visit website X and do not actually buy any product, but maybe just click on one, Facebook knows you did that.\n\nOr maybe when you added something to cart but didn’t purchase? Facebook can track that as well. Later advertisers can target those specified individuals according to their actions and it’s just one of the ways Facebook tracks users off-site.\n\nHow to Stop Facebook from Using your Pixels to Target you\nHead over to the Facebook app, click on Settings > Ad Preferences > Ad Settings > and disable “Interest Based Ads”. If you don’t see the exact option, select “Ads based on Data from Partners” and disable it.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/3.jpg\n\nAnother Alternative is using Addons like Ghostery. It can be used to check the trackers running on websites and lets you disable them.\n\n4. Offline Purchases\nIf you thought you’re only tracked online, you’re dead wrong! Everytime we purchase something, we enter our E-mail ID, name, number (atleast one of these) in order to redeem or increase our loyalty points.\n\nFacebook has access to the payment processors’ data, hence it knows exactly what’s there in your bag (as everything is included in the bill) and makes use of this data to show relevant or similar products in the ads.\n\nSimilarly it also knows your spending ranges (amounts you generally spend), stores you frequent and so on, using these data it groups each user into its micro-categories.\n\nHow to Stop Facebook from Spying on you Offline\nConsidering how it’s not directly linked to Facebook, there’s no button you can simply press to stop this from happening.\n\nBut, an easy way out would be to either stop using Loyalty cards, or link them to an E-mail ID, Cell number which isn’t associated with your Facebook account.\n\nNote that even then Facebook has ways of linking those purchases to you, but it should get you some wiggle room.\n\n5. Calls, Text and Contact Tracking.\nThis is yet another major, direct method Facebook tracks the very personal details of your life.\n\nIt asks for permission to access your contacts when you first launch Facebook and most people simply click yes, which grants Facebook access to every contact in your list and also the permission to auto-check the list for new contacts and add them to its database.\n\nIt also tracks call and text details such as who you talk to in real life, the duration of the call, time the call was made etc. Although note that it doesn’t “record or access” the call/text itself, meaning it doesn’t have access to “What” you talk about, but only the details of the call/text are stored.\n\nThose are some very private details and I’m positive none of you would like it on a platform which has faced as much criticism and legal actions on the Privacy front as Facebook.\n\nHow to Stop Facebook from Spying on your Contacts List\nOn Android Devices head over to Settings > Installed Apps > Facebook > Permissions > and turn the slider next to “Contacts” to off.\n\nAdditionally, go to the Facebook App > Settings > Contacts Uploading and turn the auto-uploading to off.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/4-1.jpg\n\nThen also turn off the “Calls and Text history uploading” slider as well.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/4.jpg\n\n6. Face Recognition\nFacebook’s Facial Recognition algorithm is one of the best in the world, it’s how Facebook knows who’s in a picture without anyone mentioning that person at all.\n\nAnd as the timing of this piece coincides with the currently trending #10YearChallenge, it’s speculated that this may actually be a gambit used by Facebook to refine and add more details, data about a person’s Face to its Facial Recog. Database.\n\nKate O’Neill recently tweeted her reservations regarding the trend, in a pretty creative tweet. Bottomline, Face Recog. is definitely “progressive” but also privacy breaching to quite an extent.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/5.jpg\n\nFortunately it’s easy to disable this, simply fire up your Facebook app, go to Settings > Facial Recognition > and turn the slider to off.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/6.jpg\n\n7. Real Life Personal Documents\nThe last major privacy breach that Facebook has designed is that it disables some accounts on various grounds, and asks for personal documents such as Driver’s license, social security number, Voter Card and so on to unlock the account.\n\nThis would mean Facebook would literally get a hold of your real-life identity by the core, and unfortunately the only ways to stop Facebook from getting those details are:\n\nBe extremely careful as to not post violent, illegal posts so that the account doesn’t get banned in the first place.\nIf it does get banned, it’s plausible to forget the account and start a new one (if possible) rather than ransoming those documents.\nWays to Stop Facebook from Spying on you on PC.\nWe’re done with almost everything that can be done on the Facebook website/app, here are just some more off-site ways you can use to stop the social media giant from getting too close to your personal life.\n\n1. Separate, Anonymous Browsers\nFacebook tracks you, even when you’re on other tabs and websites, and even if you’re signed out of your Facebook accounts! Out of the many ways it’s done, the most common is Facebook’s likes and share buttons found on numerous websites for sharing articles, videos etc.\n\nThe easiest way out of this is, using a different, clean browser on which you’ve never used Facebook, ever. The best options? Use one of the following:\n\n\nTor browser\nEpic browser\n2. Opt Out of Interest Based Ads\nFacebook let’s us opt out of its “Interest based ads”, so your interests will then be something of lesser importance to Facebook, and hence lesser trackers for you.\n\nOptOut for U.S Citizen – http://www.aboutads.info/choices/\nOptOut for Canadian Citizen – http://youradchoices.ca/\nOptOut for European Citizen – http://www.youronlinechoices.eu/\nYou should disable the ad-blockers and other cookie-restricting scripts if you have any for these sites to function properly.\n\nAlso note that the U.S site which I tried, 8 times to be exact always showed an error saying my connection was too slow. And once I solved that, another message showed up saying I need to tweak some of my cookie settings.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/8.jpg\n\n3. Browser Tweaking\nHere are some basic steps which can be followed in order to stop Facebook (and other sites) from getting your cookie data.\n\nOn Google Chrome, Click on those three horizontal lines on the top-right corner and go to Settings > Content Settings > Cookies > and enable the “Block third-party cookies” option.\n\nhttps://static.deepwebsiteslinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/9.jpg\n\nOn Firefox, click on those horizontal lines on the top-right corner > options > Privacy and Security > Cookies and Site data > and choose the “Never” option for “Accept third party cookies and site data” option.\n\nThen, install the free Facebook Container addon to hammer in the final nail in the coffin of those Facebook algos spying on you.\n\nFinal Words on How to Stop Facebook from Spying on You.\nSo those were the 7 most common practices, methods how Facebook collects user data and tracks/ spies on them.\n\nNote that these 7 practices are only the cherry on the top as compared to the actual arsenal of privileges Facebook has when it comes to accessing or gathering user data, but those are well-hidden or just not as easily recognizable.\n\nEven then, if we can stop Facebook from spying on us even on these basic levels I believe a lot of our privacy would be saved from becoming rows of data on someone’s ledger.\n\nDo let me know if there are other insights you have on the topic, questions, solution, or just Intel is appreciated as well.",

Paulo Dybala stepped up in the absence of the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League as his hat-trick helped Juventus coast to a 3-0 win over 10-man Young Boys. With Ronaldo watching on at the Allianz Stadium as he served out a one-game ban following his red card against Valencia, Dybala helped the Serie A champions make it two wins from two in Group H. His first was a wonderfully timed volley from Leonardo Bonucci long pass, the centre-back's inch-perfect delivery dropping over the head of Mohamed Ali Camara to allow his team-mate to steer the ball in with his left foot. His second was more about attacking instincts than technical ability, the forward tapping home the rebound after Young Boys goalkeeper David Von Ballmoos failed to steer Blaise Matuidi's stinging drive from the edge of the penalty area away from danger. Dybala could have recorded a first-half treble had he made better contact with a first-time effort from Federico Bernardeschi’s cut-back cross, while a right-footed finish when through on goal soon after the break was kept out by a post. However, his third eventually arrived in the 69th minute when he stretched out to poke home under pressure into an unguarded net, converting Juan Cuadrado's square pass from the right. As well as conceding three goals for a second successive outing in the competition, Young Boys had to play out the closing stages a man down after defender Camara picked up two yellow cards in the space of three minutes. What it means: Juve march on without their main man Who needs Ronaldo, right? Juventus signed the Portugal forward in the hope he can help them end a run of near misses in Europe, including losing two of the last four Champions League finals. Yet while having Real Madrid's all-time leading scorer will come in handy if they reach the latter stages of this year's competition, the Italian side have shown they can prosper just fine without him. Against Valencia they rolled up their sleeves and found a way to win when down to 10 men, while they were ruthlessly efficient in dismissing Young Boys on home soil. Dybala takes centre stage The Argentina international found the net just once in the competition last season as Juventus reached the quarter-finals but has already trebled that tally. While no longer the centre of attention following Ronaldo's arrival at the Allianz Stadium, the 24-year-old remains a key player in Allegri’s squad. Von Ballmoos offers helping hand Young Boys travelled to Turin knowing they faced a tall order, particularly after they were outclassed by Manchester United on home soil in their opener. There was little they could do to deny Juve's opener but goalkeeper Von Ballmoos gifted Dybala a second, allowing the hosts to coast to victory. What's next? Juventus will have Ronaldo available again in Europe for their mouth-watering doubleheader against his former club, Manchester United, but first up is a Serie A trip to Udinese on Saturday. Young Boys, meanwhile, will hope to open their account in the competition when they host Valencia next, with the return fixture taking place on Spanish soil on November 7. They host Luzern in domestic action on Saturday. |

Although it’s often referred to as new, Bitcoin has existed since 2009 and the technology it is built on has roots going back even further. In fact if you had invested just $1,000 in Bitcoin the year it was first publicly available, you would now be richer to the tune of £36.7 million. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes – so here is a brief history of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. 1998 – 2009 The pre-Bitcoin years Although Bitcoin was the first established cryptocurrency, there had been previous attempts at creating online currencies with ledgers secured by encryption. Two examples of these were B-Money and Bit Gold, which were formulated but never fully developed. 2008 – The Mysterious Mr Nakamoto A paper called Bitcoin – A Peer to Peer Electronic Cash System was posted to a mailing list discussion on cryptography. It was posted by someone calling themselves Satoshi Nakamoto, whose real identity remains a mystery to this day. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE Grads of Life BRANDVOICE More Than What's On Paper: Paving A New Path Civic Nation BRANDVOICE How Common App And Reach Higher Are Uniting To Help More Students 2009 – Bitcoin begins The Bitcoin software is made available to the public for the first time and mining – the process through which new Bitcoins are created and transactions are recorded and verified on the blockchain – begins. 2010 – Bitcoin is valued for the first time As it had never been traded, only mined, it was impossible to assign a monetary value to the units of the emerging cryptocurrency. In 2010, someone decided to sell theirs for the first time – swapping 10,000 of them for two pizzas. If the buyer had hung onto those Bitcoins, at today’s prices they would be worth more than $100 million. 2011 – Rival cryptocurrencies emerge As Bitcoin increases in popularity and the idea of decentralized and encrypted currencies catch on, the first alternative cryptocurrencies appear. These are sometimes known as altcoin and generally try to improve on the original Bitcoin design by offering greater speed, anonymity or some other advantage. Among the first to emerge were Namecoin and Litecoin. Currently there are over 1,000 cryptocurrencies in circulation with new ones frequently appearing. 2013 – Bitcoin price crashes. Shortly after the price of one Bitcoin reaches $1,000 for the first time, the price quickly begins to decline. Many who invested money at this point will have suffered losses as the price plummeted to around $300 – it would be more than two years before it reached $1,000 again. 2014 – Scams and theft Perhaps unsurprisingly for a currency designed with anonymity and lack of control in mind, Bitcoin has proven to be an attractive and lucrative target for criminals. In January 2014, the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange Mt.Gox went offline, and the owners of 850,000Bitcoins never saw them again. Investigations are still trying to get to the bottom of exactly what happened but whatever the story, someone dishonestly got their hands on a haul which at the time was valued at $450 million dollars. At today’s prices, those missing coins would be worth $4.4 billion. 2016 – Ethereum and ICOs. One cryptocurrency came close to stealing Bitcoin’s thunder this year, as enthusiasm grew around the Ethereum platform. This platform uses cryptocurrency known as Ether to facilitate blockchain-based smart contracts and apps. Ethereum’s arrival was marked by the emergence of Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). These are fundraising platforms which offer investors the chance to trade what are often essentially stocks or shares in startup ventures, in the same manner that they can invest and trade cryptocurrencies. In the US the SEC warned investors that due to the lack of oversight ICOs could easily be scams or ponzi schemes disguised as legitimate investments. The Chinese government went one further, by banning them outright. 2017 –Bitcoin reaches $10,000 and continues to grow A gradual increase in the places where Bitcoin could be spent contributed to its continued growth in popularity, during a period where it’s value remained below previous peaks. Gradually as more and more uses emerged, it became clear that more money was flowing into the Bitcoin and cryptocoin ecosystem. During this period the market cap of all cryptocoins rose from $11bn to its current height of over $300bn. Banks including Barclays, Citi Bank, Deutsche Bankand BNP Paribas have said they are investigating ways they might be able to work with Bitcoin. Meanwhile the technology behind Bitcoin – blockchain – has sparked a revolution in the fintech industry (and beyond) which is only just getting started. Whatever your opinion on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency – and educated commenters have described them as everything from the future of money to an outright scam – it seems they are here to stay. Will it succeed in doing what many early adopters and evangelists claim it is destined to – replace government-controlled, centralised money with a distributed and decentralized alternative, controlled by nothing besides market forces? Well, 2018 may yield some clues but we are unlikely to know the answer for some time yet. The Chinese government went one further, by banning them outright.\n\n2017 –Bitcoin reaches $10,000 and continues to grow\n\nA gradual increase in the places where Bitcoin could be spent contributed to its continued growth in popularity, during a period where it’s value remained below previous peaks. Meanwhile the technology behind Bitcoin – blockchain – has sparked a revolution in the fintech industry (and beyond) which is only just getting started.\n\nWhatever your opinion on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency – and educated commenters have described them as everything from the future of money to an outright scam – it seems they are here to stay. Will it succeed in doing what many early adopters and evangelists claim it is destined to – replace government-controlled, centralised money with a distributed and decentralized alternative, controlled by nothing besides market forces? Well, 2018 may yield some clues but we are unlikely to know the answer for some time yet.\n\nI write books, deliver keynote presentations and provide expert advice on big data, analytics, metrics and improving business performance. UUNIO wants its service to threaten the likes of YouTube, where it claims some content creators are barely given $500 even if they amass a million views. It is also railing against internet giants such as Facebook, which makes billions of dollars a year on the back of personal data and advertising – wealth which is never shared with its users. Copyright infringement is also an issue, with fledgling entertainers all too often finding their work has been ripped off by other accounts. But perhaps most interesting is UUNIO’s plan to challenge other blockchain platforms which pay people to post online – and Steemit is one of the networks firmly in the company’s sights. According to UUNIO, Steemit’s upvoting system is flawed because the power carried by a single vote is determined by the money held in a user’s account. The company says this has left smaller content creators struggling to earn decent compensation unless their work is recognized by a “whale” – someone with significant Steem Power. To compound the problem, Steemit only pays out rewards for the first seven days that a post is live, meaning creators of evergreen viral content could potentially miss out on years of earnings. UUNIO’s answer is to give equal voting power to all – eliminating the risk of self-voting and ensuring that a few users cannot control the fates of many thousands more. The company claims a large chunk of its community would need to work together to abuse the system – meaning there is less chance of manipulation. Its platform would also do away with the concept of a compensation period, with UUNIO raising the fanciful idea that creators could use the annual earnings on timeless content for a pension. In time, the startup hopes to build “a new world where a lot of creators can get fully rewarded” – furnished with a marketplace where content can be bought and sold without commission. A suite of decentralized apps UUNIO would be supported by a suite of other decentralized apps (dApps) which aim to shake up online reviews, the world of news, and investing in ICOs. A cryptocurrency wallet called CLET would be used for depositing and withdrawing UUNIO tokens, as well as doubling up as an exchange. Upon launch in August, the company also hopes it will become a “comprehensive ICO platform” where investors can participate in initial coin offerings – or simply transfer coins to friends. Another dApp called UUNIREVIEW aims to tackle the dishonesty seen in some online testimonials, with the company promising “honest reviews without interference from sponsorships.” Users would receive rewards whenever they write a review – irrespective of whether it’s good or bad – and the startup hopes this transparency would give consumers the “sincere and useful information they need” to make purchasing decisions. This would be complemented by UUNIPRESS, which would go head to head with media outlets that create “exaggerated articles just to obtain more traffic.” The company hopes this platform would be home to reliable news articles, with writers rewarded in tokens for “accurate and insightful” content. Two tokens have been created by the platform. While the UUNIO token is an intermediary currency between its ecosystem and exchanges, UNIFUL tokens would be used for purchasing content, making donations and ad spending. The company’s token sale will run until June 30. |
