EOS tokens have shot up from $7 to as much as $21 in the past few weeks as the market tries to value how popular EOS will be after launching. If software developers go totally mad for it, the price should rise further. If not, it could collapse. My guess is the former. Early versions of the EOS platform pre-launched in what we call Beta testing have been seriously exciting. It’s super fast, can cope with huge volumes of transactions, and is really easy to write code for. For techies out there, it uses the language called C++ for coding, which is really common among developers. Ethereum, by contrast, uses a specific, newly-created language called Solidity. There’s another reason I reckon the price of EOS will rise. Remember how I was saying the value would depend on how many people spend it to use EOS-based apps? Well, EOS’s founders (a software company called Block.one) have given hundreds of millions of dollars from the funds raised during the ICO to venture capital funds investing in app start-ups. One condition: only apps using the Eos infrastructure can apply for funding. EOS VC funding currently totals $1.4 billion. If that doesn’t encourage more people to launch start-ups, I don’t know what will. There are literally thousands of developers working on blockchain based apps that do away with the middlemen of this world. Who knows, one of those on the EOS system could be the app that kills off the need for multi-billion dollar companies like Twitter, or Facebook, or even Barclays? See why a share-the-love kind of guy like me is a fan? For those just looking to turn a profit from speculating on the currency, you have to be aware EOS is extremely volatile, just like all cryptos. As recently as March, it was only $4. I’ve been slowly buying more since it was $1 and made myself some of the biggest returns I’ve ever had. It’s now my biggest crypto position in my portfolio. But there’s no guarantee it won’t collapse. There are many risks to consider. ![93054FE9-5D26-41E7-9627-5E4607C9B7DB.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNUH3M189bJd3Zj7rnKntxrPzAudg3SKwtHTZS8sc8WZ6/93054FE9-5D26-41E7-9627-5E4607C9B7DB.jpeg) The Risks of buying EOS The software might prove to be a disappointment (unlikely as we’ve already seen plenty of it in beta test-runs). It might be overtaken by better innovations elsewhere. Etherium is developing great new technology for its platform to scale up, while IOTA and Cardano offer their own visions of the future and are both hot on the heels of EOS. You can’t completely eliminate the fact that it might face attack from hackers, regulators or even rival projects. If you’re thinking of speculating on EOS, then, those are the questions you must ask yourself. For me, though, I’m all in – as a speculator and an enthusiast. What’s so special about EOS? You see, EOS wants to open its technology and ownership to anyone and everyone who’s interested. It’s a cryptocurrency which is opening up the blockchain system behind it to any software developer wanting to build apps on it. You could think of it like Google allowing anyone and everyone to write apps for Android. Just as Google is now profiting from the ubiquity of Android on billions of people’s phones, so EOS wants to become the platform of choice for the new breed of apps, decentralised ones. Why? Because in order to do anything on the EOS blockchain, you must first own a bit of EOS, and you own it through EOS tokens. I'll give you an example. Imagine Uber: it is extremely popular for a handful of reasons, the rides are cheaper than traditional taxis, the passengers and drivers are incentivised to be polite and amicable, the app is intuitive and easy to use. But if I were to build an Uber on a blockchain like EOS’s, I could easily improve it. First off, because blockchain directly connects both sides of the transaction – driver and passenger – you can remove the company in the middle that’s taking a cut. That saves money for everybody. Fees would be priced in the local currency, but be paid with the “Uber” token. As my app became more popular, the “Uber” token passengers would use for it would rise in value, so stakeholders are incentivised to develop it further and improve the service. The payments could be instant, direct into the driver’s account. No fee to a middleman company, and no minimum requirements on payment amounts since there are no banks taking a cut either. In the same way that the token for this app would rise in value as its popularity grows, so too would the value of EOS, whose blockchain powers the system behind the scenes. My investors, my customers’ drivers, and their passengers have aligned incentives to grow their network. Every time someone uses the token the economy grows, and since EOS is powering all transactions and computation, that too will grow. The EOS Coin Offering (ICO) For me to build this theoretical Uber alternative app, the guys behind EOS (a software company called Block.one) had to first create the infrastructure and tools for me to build it with, which they fund through what’s known as an Initial Coin Offering. An ICO is where a project sells tokens in its currency to raise funds for development. It works like a stock market flotation, and what you do is this: Step one: announce how great your tech is. Drum up interest among investors and programmers Step two: announce you’re going to raise x million dollars by issuing a limited number of tokens. Step three: put the tokens on the market and watch the money roll in That process is fine, but while it may raise the money you want, it usually means that, if your crypto is any good, a group of maybe 20 very rich guys end up getting half of the coins. It’s complicated to explain how, but basically you can pay a fat fee to push to the front of the queue, ahead of ordinary investors. EOS didn’t want that. Quite the opposite; because they want to maximise the popularity of their platform, they wanted as many people as possible to own their tokens. Instead of putting them all on the market at once to be gobbled up by a few wealthy folks in a matter of minutes, the EOS folks have staggered their offering of 1 billion coins over a whole year, selling chunks of 2 million tokens a day, every day. Everyone who applies gets a percentage of that day’s issue according to how much they can afford. Like most cryptocurrencies, the tokens can be split into fractions like the old ha’penny piece, meaning there’s no high minimum entry level. You could buy $1 of EOS if you wanted to. All that has served as a disincentive to rich investors hoping to corner the market, and meant far more ordinary people have got in on the action. Hundreds of thousands of different people now own a piece of EOS. That’s very cool. It makes EOS the John Lewis of cryptos. Or even better; the crypto Co-op, more widely held than over 99% of other cryptos, rivaling the likes of Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin and Ethereum. The thing is, the auction is finally coming to an end on 1 June. On the same day, the infrastructure will go live, so all those apps being developed by people like me (more about my EOS apps in future columns) will also begin launching, using EOS for transactions and data transfers. That means there will be no more supply of EOS (apart from perhaps 1-4% inflation per year if the EOS community agrees to it) but potentially lots of demand. The question is: how much demand, and how much will the market price that demand at?

If software developers go totally mad for it, the price should rise further. If not, it could collapse.\n\nMy guess is the former. Early versions of the EOS platform pre-launched in what we call Beta testing have been seriously exciting. It’s super fast, can cope with huge volumes of transactions, and is really easy to write code for. For techies out there, it uses the language called C++ for coding, which is really common among developers. Ethereum, by contrast, uses a specific, newly-created language called Solidity.\n\nThere’s another reason I reckon the price of EOS will rise.\n\nRemember how I was saying the value would depend on how many people spend it to use EOS-based apps? Well, EOS’s founders (a software company called Block.one) have given hundreds of millions of dollars from the funds raised during the ICO to venture capital funds investing in app start-ups. One condition: only apps using the Eos infrastructure can apply for funding. EOS VC funding currently totals $1.4 billion.\n\nIf that doesn’t encourage more people to launch start-ups, I don’t know what will.\n\nThere are literally thousands of developers working on blockchain based apps that do away with the middlemen of this world. Who knows, one of those on the EOS system could be the app that kills off the need for multi-billion dollar companies like Twitter, or Facebook, or even Barclays?\n\nSee why a share-the-love kind of guy like me is a fan?\n\nFor those just looking to turn a profit from speculating on the currency, you have to be aware EOS is extremely volatile, just like all cryptos. As recently as March, it was only $4. I’ve been slowly buying more since it was $1 and made myself some of the biggest returns I’ve ever had. It’s now my biggest crypto position in my portfolio.\n\nBut there’s no guarantee it won’t collapse. There are many risks to consider.\n\n![93054FE9-5D26-41E7-9627-5E4607C9B7DB.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNUH3M189bJd3Zj7rnKntxrPzAudg3SKwtHTZS8sc8WZ6/93054FE9-5D26-41E7-9627-5E4607C9B7DB.jpeg)\n\nThe Risks of buying EOS\n\nThe software might prove to be a disappointment (unlikely as we’ve already seen plenty of it in beta test-runs).\n\nIt might be overtaken by better innovations elsewhere. Etherium is developing great new technology for its platform to scale up, while IOTA and Cardano offer their own visions of the future and are both hot on the heels of EOS.\n\nYou can’t completely eliminate the fact that it might face attack from hackers, regulators or even rival projects.\n\nIf you’re thinking of speculating on EOS, then, those are the questions you must ask yourself.\n\nFor me, though, I’m all in – as a speculator and an enthusiast.\n\nWhat’s so special about EOS?\n\nYou see, EOS wants to open its technology and ownership to anyone and everyone who’s interested.\n\nIt’s a cryptocurrency which is opening up the blockchain system behind it to any software developer wanting to build apps on it. You could think of it like Google allowing anyone and everyone to write apps for Android. Just as Google is now profiting from the ubiquity of Android on billions of people’s phones, so EOS wants to become the platform of choice for the new breed of apps, decentralised ones.\n\nWhy? Because in order to do anything on the EOS blockchain, you must first own a bit of EOS, and you own it through EOS tokens.\n\nI'll give you an example. Imagine Uber: it is extremely popular for a handful of reasons, the rides are cheaper than traditional taxis, the passengers and drivers are incentivised to be polite and amicable, the app is intuitive and easy to use.\n\nBut if I were to build an Uber on a blockchain like EOS’s, I could easily improve it. First off, because blockchain directly connects both sides of the transaction – driver and passenger – you can remove the company in the middle that’s taking a cut. That saves money for everybody. Fees would be priced in the local currency, but be paid with the “Uber” token.\n\nAs my app became more popular, the “Uber” token passengers would use for it would rise in value, so stakeholders are incentivised to develop it further and improve the service.\n\nThe payments could be instant, direct into the driver’s account. No fee to a middleman company, and no minimum requirements on payment amounts since there are no banks taking a cut either.\n\nIn the same way that the token for this app would rise in value as its popularity grows, so too would the value of EOS, whose blockchain powers the system behind the scenes. My investors, my customers’ drivers, and their passengers have aligned incentives to grow their network. Every time someone uses the token the economy grows, and since EOS is powering all transactions and computation, that too will grow.\n\nThe EOS Coin Offering (ICO)\n\nFor me to build this theoretical Uber alternative app, the guys behind EOS (a software company called Block.one) had to first create the infrastructure and tools for me to build it with, which they fund through what’s known as an Initial Coin Offering. An ICO is where a project sells tokens in its currency to raise funds for development. It works like a stock market flotation, and what you do is this:\n\nStep one: announce how great your tech is. Drum up interest among investors and programmers\n\nStep two: announce you’re going to raise x million dollars by issuing a limited number of tokens.\n\nStep three: put the tokens on the market and watch the money roll in\n\nThat process is fine, but while it may raise the money you want, it usually means that, if your crypto is any good, a group of maybe 20 very rich guys end up getting half of the coins. It’s complicated to explain how, but basically you can pay a fat fee to push to the front of the queue, ahead of ordinary investors.\n\nEOS didn’t want that. Quite the opposite; because they want to maximise the popularity of their platform, they wanted as many people as possible to own their tokens.\n\nInstead of putting them all on the market at once to be gobbled up by a few wealthy folks in a matter of minutes, the EOS folks have staggered their offering of 1 billion coins over a whole year, selling chunks of 2 million tokens a day, every day. Everyone who applies gets a percentage of that day’s issue according to how much they can afford. Like most cryptocurrencies, the tokens can be split into fractions like the old ha’penny piece, meaning there’s no high minimum entry level. You could buy $1 of EOS if you wanted to.\n\nAll that has served as a disincentive to rich investors hoping to corner the market, and meant far more ordinary people have got in on the action.\n\nHundreds of thousands of different people now own a piece of EOS. That’s very cool. It makes EOS the John Lewis of cryptos. Or even better; the crypto Co-op, more widely held than over 99% of other cryptos, rivaling the likes of Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin and Ethereum.\n\nThe thing is, the auction is finally coming to an end on 1 June. On the same day, the infrastructure will go live, so all those apps being developed by people like me (more about my EOS apps in future columns) will also begin launching, using EOS for transactions and data transfers.\n\nThat means there will be no more supply of EOS (apart from perhaps 1-4% inflation per year if the EOS community agrees to it) but potentially lots of demand. The question is: how much demand, and how much will the market price that demand at?",

The 3 day summit will be held at the New York Hilton Midtown. The event will feature over 250 speakers and over 4,000 attendees from a variety of industries. They will include start-ups, investors, financial institutions, enterprise tech leaders, members of academia and policy groups; all building the much needed foundations for blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. This year’s event is expected to shatter previous year’s records in terms of buzz and attendance. Last year the event had around 2,700 attendees, over 125 speakers, 80+ sponsors and participants from over 70 countries around the globe. The 2018 event is sure to double the 2017 numbers given the projections by the event organisers, notable big companies expected at the event include Microsoft, IBM, Proctor and Gamble, Siemens, CME Ventures, Citi, Scotiabank, KPMG, PWC and many more. On top of the event excitement, is the possibility of a repeat crypto-markets rally during the event that was also experienced last year. During the 2017 event, the Crypto-markets experienced a 27% gain in overall market capitalization value. This was a major leap when compared with the 2016 market cap gain of only 2.7% during the event in 2016. From the chart taken from Coinmarketcap, you can see that the Market cap nearly doubled with a week after the Consensus show in 2017. ![5B147328-2825-4F1D-8328-FD8FBD77DF8C.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf64XPm4DdSvcmSWCywEJz7jHzQhZQ47idSWj6uQcGMwD/5B147328-2825-4F1D-8328-FD8FBD77DF8C.png) Many traders believe that Bitcoin reached the $2,000 mark last year because of the event. Consensus 2017 is also believed to have brought BTC to the media spotlight and catalysed a market rally that saw the King of Crypto peaking at $20,000 on December 17th last year. If the last percentage increment in the market cap is to go by, the markets surge in 2017 increased by a factor of 10 in comparison to the surge in 2016. Does this mean that the 2018 event will cause a rally that will cause a 270% increment in the total market capitalization? This would mean that the crypto market would be valued at $1.053 Trillion by the end of the event and by using today’s total market cap of $390 Billion.

For the first time in cryptocurrency history, the BitShares blockchain has recorded a new 24 hour record, according to Blocktivity.info. Within a single 24hr period, BitShares reached 1,513,308 transactions, which averages to roughly 17.5 transactions per second (TPS). Currently, the BitShares blockchain ranks second behind Steem, which holds the record for 2,068,341 transactions within 24 hours (23.9 TPS). So what has contributed to this massive spike in activity? ![FD9DA1C2-6254-4DD4-B308-62F317110A6E.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZSVABGf7fhAz2eqJ9YYnY69MHS6t4yUjZZSy4pFTNeJM/FD9DA1C2-6254-4DD4-B308-62F317110A6E.png) One theory is the legislative crackdown. As the SEC and CFTC hunt down illegitimate exchanges and cryptocurrencies, customers are flocking to established, reputable coins and blockchain technology. They don’t want to have to deal with fines or punitive action- they just want to invest or contribute to the industry. BitShares has proven its salt through numerous partnerships, use cases, and now, it’s trade volume. ![A84E95E4-3F97-400F-A74F-249D74D37154.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPHeW4NhyTCaAZKKVPCCEcjar8LmFpkkSpPYxJYyQVJQS/A84E95E4-3F97-400F-A74F-249D74D37154.jpeg) Other explanations include the rise of investment platforms, wallets, and trading bots that are making trades more efficient than ever. Crypto investments are becoming largely automated, and BitShares is in a unique position to support large volume trades. The Battle of Three Blockchains In a recent Blue Rock Talk livestream, Stan Larimer, Godfather of Bitshares, discusses the ongoing competition between three of the largest blockchains: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BitShares. In contrast, Ethereum is more like a dancer- agile and adaptable. Ethereum has proven to be more lightweight than Bitcoin, and through its programmability, is able to conduct a variety of different applications. Many businesses that tout advanced methodologies are in fact using an Ethereum protocol. In one incident, a crypto kitty game briefly congested the Ethereum blockchain, slowing all transactions to a halt. Once EOS catches up, however, it may give ETH a run for its money. Finally, BitShares is the tennis player- quick and strong, with reliable performance. Ethereum can only handle 25 transactions per second, while BitShares is in a class of its own, handling transactions in the thousands. Already, businesses have adopted BitShares within their services, such as the Billion Hero Campaign.

However, investing in cryptocurrencies is no joke and requires one to do their own research before committing money to any coin. Without much ado let us have a look at 2 altcoins that can reap better returns than Bitcoin. Stellar The altcoin has become a force to reckon with among cryptocurrencies. Its blockchain can process fast transactions. They usually take between two to five seconds to process and this has made it very popular with crypto users. XLM gained 5.6% in the past week and has seen 117% gain in the last one month. Believers of the altcoin see it crossing the $1 mark in 2018. Fuelling that gain will be the growing interest in the altcoin which has seen it land some major partnership with the likes of IBM and ICICI Bank of India. If this comes to fruition, then expect investors to make handsome returns. Cardano Ada is an improvement of the Ethereum platform or at least that is what they are trying to achieve. It’s a third generation dApp blockchain solution that makes it possible to program smart contracts and blockchains. The altcoin is set to see major implementations this year and when this happens expect its price to shoot for the skies. It has been predicted to hit the $8 mark by the end of the year which would represent a nice return given that it’s currently trading at $0.36. The altcoin has experienced a 20.4% gain in the past week and a 141% gain in the last month. In 2017 ADA experienced a 2835% gain and if this figure is to be repeated again this year then expect its investors to make handsome returns on their investment.

Without much ado let us have a look at 2 altcoins that can reap better returns than Bitcoin.\n\nStellar\n\nThe altcoin has become a force to reckon with among cryptocurrencies. Its blockchain can process fast transactions. They usually take between two to five seconds to process and this has made it very popular with crypto users.\n\nXLM gained 5.6% in the past week and has seen 117% gain in the last one month. Believers of the altcoin see it crossing the $1 mark in 2018. Fuelling that gain will be the growing interest in the altcoin which has seen it land some major partnership with the likes of IBM and ICICI Bank of India. If this comes to fruition, then expect investors to make handsome returns.\n\nCardano\n\nAda is an improvement of the Ethereum platform or at least that is what they are trying to achieve. It’s a third generation dApp blockchain solution that makes it possible to program smart contracts and blockchains.\n\nThe altcoin is set to see major implementations this year and when this happens expect its price to shoot for the skies. It has been predicted to hit the $8 mark by the end of the year which would represent a nice return given that it’s currently trading at $0.36.\n\nThe altcoin has experienced a 20.4% gain in the past week and a 141% gain in the last month. In 2017 ADA experienced a 2835% gain and if this figure is to be repeated again this year then expect its investors to make handsome returns on their investment.",

That’s how it should be. For us, as cryptocurrency aficionados or investors it matters a great deal to know for sure what are we getting into. It’s an investment, we should know where our money is. And, within this context, there’s talk that EOS is not a real altcoin but a scam. We should care about that, it just makes sense. EOS faces two main points of contention right now. Dan Larimer (a visionary EOS code writer, he’s also worked for Steem and Bitshares) is representative of EOS challengers and he’s not popular, but he has a point to make. At some point in time none other than Satoshi (of Bitcoin fame) talked to Larimer in very clear terms “If you don’t believe me or don’t get it, I don’t have time to try to convince you, sorry.” They disagree on two main contention points. It’s about ICO vs distribution that starts from pow mine from zero. The second point is that Mr. Larimer started a new coin and he’s not quite done with it. Other observers have said Mr. Larimer’s has a huge vision for the future for his coin and for the world, and that blockchain technology is the means he could use to achieve that. Crypto enthusiasts have followed Mr. Larimer’s career very closely. He’s been behind two very successful products so far (Bitshares and Steemit) before he moved on to create EOS. So, he’s brought credibility to EOS just because his previous track record is so good. Investors think he could revolutionize the world, three times over. Think again. Decentralization This is the cryptocurrency’s hallmark from the beginning. The whole point. Nobody holds all the information about every user, nobody can hold the system hostage. Is this true about EOS? It’s controversial, to say the least. While EOS has been probably undervalued and has the potential to surpass Ethereum this very year the fact remains it relies on partial centralization through dPOS, aka proof-of-stake. True, decentralized coins have infinite nodes competing to do the needed calculations to render each coin valid and useful. EOS does not, it brings the number down from infinite to twenty-one nodes. Statistically, that means centralization and it’s bad news. EOS’ rivals (such as Ethereum) say that EOS is totally centralized. Not hard to see their point when you compare infinity nodes to just twenty-one. So, it’s clear that EOS decentralization is much better with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other cryptocurrencies.

But this is not new. Bitcoin (BTC) has retreated by 1.89% to be trading at $9,246; Ethereum (ETH) is experiencing some sideways movement at $678; Ripple (XRP) has undergone a 4.26% decline and is trading at $0.84; Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and EOS are holding strong at $1,389 and $18.34 respectively, with the latter having declined by 15.74% in 24 hours. But all is not lost for the crypto markets. Scrolling down the list on coinmarketcap.com, one can notice Bitshares doing double digit gains. This coin is currently ranked #35 on coinmarketcap.com. BSC is currently doing 13.26% in 24 hour gains and is currently trading at $0.332 at the moment of writing this. Bitshares prides itself as a platform where users share in a decentralized exchange. The developers also formed Cryptonomex that facilitates software development services to meet the growing demand for custom, high-performance, blockchains and related technology. With their proprietary Graphene based systems, Bitshares provides a toolkit for real-time blockchains. The project has been around since 2014 but seems to be gathering momentum this year.

body![62AF5DAA-25B3-469B-A599-D14243CE3A22.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQme9Ys5YrnfGRQgPdavV5n2Dnu6SmxyqG2sh3fLNyGDvbn/62AF5DAA-25B3-469B-A599-D14243CE3A22.png) DApps are not necessarily laptop or mobile applications, as some might think. Decentralized Applications imply a wider meaning. They can be identified as a tool set that can be scaled and applied to any phenomenon. Cryptocurrency systems like Waves or, for example, a decentralized food delivery system are both DApps. The only difference between them is the Type of DApps to which they are related. Type I These are solely financial DApps that utilize their own cryptocurrency (Waves, Bitcoin, etc.) and operate strictly within the blockchain world. Simply put, these are world-famous cryptocurrencies as we know them. Type II These DApps go beyond the blockchain world, but are used solely for financial purposes. For example, an ICO or a blockchain-based customer loyalty programme are Type II DApps. Type III Currently, there are numerous initiatives developing and implementing these types of DApps. Type III DApps perfectly illustrate the notion that, besides money, you can literally tokenize everything. Blockchain provides astonishing capabilities for customer/business relations, since the system itself is hard to undermine, so any actions that take place within the blockchain are easily traceable. The information is securely distributed between different nodes, making hacking or scam attempts pointless. Type III DApps are destined to change the world as we know it both for customers and businesses. With DApps, any sphere of our lives will become far more secure and comfortable than today, also providing passive incomes. For example, imagine a DApp that connects all insurance companies and their customers in one decentralized system. Suppose that some services in your insurance plan are about to expire, or you just don’t need them anymore (e.g. you sold a car, so have no need for vehicle insurance anymore). The DApp distributes these services to those who really need them, and you get a reward for it in a form of a token. With such a DApp insurance businesses can significantly reduce operational costs and adapt their products more effectively to the needs of the market, while attracting more customers, since there’s a built-in reward system. Another example will be owning a solar or wind facility for your home or business. With an energy distribution DApp you can transfer an energy surplus to those who need it and get a reward in exchange. ![616948F9-E079-463D-A847-42CBC2B92A98.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmd1CS8YozRzTCHcQUSgMuzTG5PGsnyax67rPBjpA1eCpe/616948F9-E079-463D-A847-42CBC2B92A98.png) So, in the next five years we will see significant changes in: Finance and banking Healthcare Taxi and car rental services Energy distribution Real estate Food delivery Cloud storage Music services Governance Education Advertising Human Resources Betting and gambling Labour reward Obviously, this list will expand further, incorporating spheres that seem today untokenizable at first. Currently, the most obvious and rapid changes are taking place in the following spheres: Identity authentication Finances and banking Voting Governance Logistics and Supply Management Identity authentication stands out in this list. Together with smart contract mechanisms, it is one of the backbones for DApp market development. ![AF42F1A1-A6B5-4200-BD39-ED4BD86DADF7.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbegxx3mELkw2r2rqcXR4FKFCnKXeukSRPT4g2xobC5Wb/AF42F1A1-A6B5-4200-BD39-ED4BD86DADF7.png) Identity Authentication We put identity authentication first for a reason. ID authentication, based on blockchain technology, provides a set of diversified, universal and standardised tools for the rest of the blockchain world, whether finances, governance, real estate or advertising. For example: ID authentication for cryptocurrency accounts Protection of your social media accounts Protection of your financial accounts (e.g. a user app for your bank) and financial data while using e-commerce Storage and utilization of other personal data (medical, insurance, etc.) Effectively secured e-signature Simplification of KYC validation Conventional ID authentication solutions are time-consuming, vulnerable to scam attacks and expensive. Currently, your personal data exists in many incarnations, being stored in multiple centralised systems. Every time an entity, whether an online shop or a governmental institution, demands typical information from you (like home address, e-mail, ID number, etc.), you have to transfer this information. It does seem unreasonable, but right now the whole ID authentication process is duplicated each time you want to open a bank account or simply register on a site, consuming your time and the time of the service provider you apply to. Moreover, any of the servers, where your personal data is stored, can be hacked. Each year identity theft scams cost American consumers billions of dollars. A noble attempt of Estonian authorities to digitalise citizenship, elections and all other bureaucratic procedures turned into a train wreck: due to a chip flaw, passwords of 760,000 e-cards were exposed to hackers. On the contrary, blockchain-based identity authentication systems are far more secure, universal and low-cost. Among their benefits are: Private keys generation by a third-party Multi-level authorization Identifying information stored by the user, not by the entity Significantly reduction in KYC process costs and efficiency of identity verification procedures Universal access to customer data for entities (businesses) In the ideal world in which we will hopefully be living in the next 5-10 years, you won’t have to distribute your personal data every time you sign up for something. Any process, whether issuing a driver’s license or opening a bank account, will be swift, taking just a few days (or maybe even hours), since the process of personal data distribution will be universal and there will be no need to store the data on centralised servers and run KYC procedures every time. You just provide a combination of your biometric data, a private key, or e-signature, and that’s it. Obviously, blockchain identity authentication is the driving force for the widespread implementation of all other DApps, meaning they will be a day-to-day reality for any consumer. Smart Contracts The next big thing after identity authentication that directly influences the evolution of DApps, is smart contracts (blockchain ID authentication uses them as well). They are reliable mechanisms that make exchange of digitised information with certain conditions secure, fast and transparent. Smart contracts are evolving together with the blockchain. In the near future Waves will have one of the most effective smart contract mechanisms ever: they’ll be be able to meet any parameters possible, whatever the amount, variations and combinations, opening fascinating perspectives for the creation of any kind of consumer DApps, all of which are supposed to make our everyday lives easier. Voting and Governance Besides the financial sector, identity authentication, powered by smart contract mechanisms, is making its way into voting and governance. So far, digitisation of these spheres has not been progressing well, as many expected. Besides the Estonian ID cards precedent that we already mentioned, there are lots of other unsuccessful examples. Before blockchain technology started to tap into our lives, any attempt to make voting or other bureaucratic procedures more open and accessible was prone to fail, since there was no solution to the inevitable security issues. With blockchain, voting and governance not only will become more transparent and user-friendly, but also super secure. Logistics and Supply Management Shipping and supplies are quite a headache for many customers and companies. Right now large corporations, among which are Walmart, FedEx, Maersk, General Motors, Proctor and Gamble, etc., are teaming up with developers in order to include blockchain solutions into the companies’ structure. Everything is a DApp Blockchain-based services in finance, logistics/supplies, voting and governance, underpinned by powerful identity authentication tools and smart contracts, are making it to the top of the DApps list right now. Yet, these spheres are not the only ones that are being decentralized and tokenized. We do have to admit that, due to the relative novelty of the technology, even the top 5 (finances, voting, governance, ID authentication, logistics and supplies) do not look pretty (we deliberately put gambling and betting systems aside, since they don’t completely fit into the subject of the article). If we exclude the implementation of blockchain solutions by large companies and take a look at DApps that ran an ICO, we’ll see that only few of them have made it big so far, but that’s just the way it is — the strongest survives, meaning the one that has the most consistent product, that meets market requirements and is capable of further evolution. This applies to everything. There are some good examples of DApps in advertising, labour reward, human resources, and internet browsing software. Other services — like car rental and taxis, food delivery, even healthcare — are being decentralized moderately, without obvious success, but it’s just a matter of time before we will see revolutionary examples.
