The debates were pretty dank, and involved a lot of posturing as people attempt to make themselves look more valuable while making others look less valuable. \n\nBy the time it was over, a white board was covered with equity percentages that had been erased and re-written dozens of times, moving a percentage point here or a point there into each founder's pools. To be fair, we had already done this over a year ago, but a new co-founder wanted to join, and insisted we re-capitalize our whole structure in the process. \n\nWhat we didn't exactly use was a tested methodology for ascribing value to each person. We all know what we bring to the table, but you don't simply get 20% of the company for having the idea, or 10% of the company for making the business plan. Today I was thinking about our numbers, and came across a table that helps you assign values for different founder attributes, and I liked it so much I linked it at the top. There are plenty of other equity calculators, but I just filled out this basic table, and found to my amazement that we had reached almost the exact same numbers on our own after hours of debates. That makes me happy, because nobody was terribly under or over-valued, we just couldn't budge on the last few percent.\n\n\nDespite how close we were, yesterday negotiations ended without us finding a compromise. Only a few % points separated the parties, but somehow those points were a hill to die on. Nobody wants to be undervalued. Nobody wants someone else to be overvalued. I'm strangely ambivalent about the outcome, after one party who had previously accepted an offer of 18% equity, proclaimed he wanted 20%, and would not budge from there. Both sides probably expected the other to give in, but in this game of chicken, the cars crashed.\n\nThis is all probably boring as hell, or interesting to anyone who has tried to found a company with friends, or with strangers. You always agree...until you don't. The agreement may actually be the most dangerous part, like a gambler who gets addicted from an early win but can't recognize they have been losing ever since. \n\n\nAside from setting up a share split that makes everyone feel respected and well compensated, start-ups desperately need to have a decision making process built on the idea of disagreement, not agreement. Having a 51% partner who can veto everyone else may sound insane to many people, but to others it can avoid squabbling. In our scenario, we were going from a 51% situation, to one where any two out of three co-founders could outvote the other. Beyond that, you can have a Board of Directors, who can even outvote the founders if a resolution is needed. All those structures exist because literally everyone argues, everyone will disagree on something, and even best friends may need to ask the board to vote, or flip a coin to determine which call to make. \n\n\nI've learned all this crap the hard way, by starting companies and seeing new and innovative ways for them to struggle and fail. \n\nThe most alluring thing about a start-up is taking your \"best\" idea, and trying to find a way to make it into a business. But as I look at previous \"best ideas,\" part of me wishes I had chosen a crappier idea early on, so that when I inevitably failed, it didn't hurt so much. In everything else, you start small and then get bigger/stronger/more confident over time. \n\nYou don't try and paint the Mona Lisa FIRST. \n\nYou don't try and bench 225 before making sure you can bench at least 100.\n\nYou don't warp to the end boss of a game on the first try and expect to have the skills needed to win.\n\n\nExcept for a few lucky bastards, the first attempt at everything is more like a test to see what you are capable of, with the expected result being a valuable failure that can inform future endeavours.  This is the same with business and start-ups, where some assholes get lucky, but the rest learn just how much they don't know, precisely as it bites them in the ass. \n\nThere are a LOT of entrepreneurs in the crypto space, and I worry about how many of them got lucky on the first investment and now expect that success to be commonplace. I've heard people who scoff at regular investments that only have a 20-50% return, because a crypto investment could yield multi-thousand percent gains in a year. These individuals will surely try to start their own companies, run hasty ICOs, and then learn all the valuable business lessons the hard way, but with tons of money at stake. \n\nSorry for the ramble. It was raw, unfiltered, painted a scary picture of all the difficulties that remain before VR hits mass adoption, and it subsequently got shared more than any other post I have made on the topic.\n\nAnd it got me in trouble.\n\nLife in a start-up is a constant game of reacting to the biggest new development, pivoting products, business plans, narratives, and anything else that may help you succeed. Some will work, others won't.\n\nExample: Through contacts that we have cultivated for years, our team gained access to a pre-release version of the hottest new headset. We were possibly the only American team to get one, but couldn't brag about that fact because it could inspire jealousy in others who felt they deserved it more. \n\nAccess to this new VR headset, and close ties with the product team, meant that we could just barely get content to push for the device's launch, so we pivoted all our art and engineering resources to make a launch title. It has very little to do with our main business narrative, but an opportunity was seen, and seized upon. The game ended up pretty cool given how much time we spent on it, but so far it has earned less money than posting here 3 or 4 times, so I can't call it a success.\n\n\nBeing able to pivot is just about the only way to survive in VR (and AR) these days. You make bets, often extremely fast. Sometimes they pay off, and sometimes they do not. \n\nEvery guess, good or bad, becomes your track record, and is used to judge all future decisions. If our pivot to the game had yielded hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, it would have seemed like a genius move. With the crappy sales so far, it looks like a blunder. As the guy who was pushing for the game, my rep is tied to its success, so I look pretty dank right now.\n\nAnd of all things, now is the time we are doing a major share reorganization as we make room to pull on new co-founders. By being in a slump, I'm getting hammered on the judgment calls that have not paid off, and every failure is used as a justification to claw back more of my shares and erode my control. If I go into too much more detail on that power struggle I will be typing in all caps soon, so I'll finish here with some advice.\n\nKeep a record of your successes. Other people will remember them less than your failures, and when it suits them, they will list the bad and ignore the good. Know your value, and don't let a bad judgment call haunt you. The most generic fortune cookie advice for every founder is to \"Fail Fast,\" learn from the failure, and do better the next time. If you learn something from every failure, and do better the next time, people can't use them as weapons against you. \n\nOr if they try, you'll have your list of successes and everything you learned from your failures, as a weapon to fight back.",

      "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gHffjn8xcTw/WjqRXgwvgfI/AAAAAAAAUSo/W2iIoHFnHaUkZx_ymZaAJcI1LN-3KMWugCLcBGAs/s1600/ML%2BOne-1.JPG\" width=\"1600\" height=\"828\"/></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I just watched my second Blockchain lecture this month, discussing StormX, where last week the founders of RChain talked about their new kind of math that evolved into a programming language for smart contracts.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>As I sit and listen to founders of multi-million dollar ICOs, and reflect on daily life as a VR and AR founder, one thing is painfully clear.</p>\n<p>It may be too early for VR, and it is certainly too early for AR.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>These technologies stand poised to change the world, change computing, and bring us into the next generation of human-machine interfaces. I don't want to preach too hard, but the tech I work on or near will soon be revolutionizing education, training, data visualization, medical procedures, entertainment, games and more.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>And yet every day I ask myself...did I get in too damn early?</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Rewind to the end of 2013, a time when the only way to get a VR headset was to have backed the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, no AR headsets were on the market at all, and the tech of today was barely being spun up in R&amp;D labs at Valve, Microsoft, Sony etc.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br>\nAnd yet by luck of having just moved to Seattle, and luck of playing board games with some people who were working at a startup north of Bellevue, I got to participate in a weekend Hackathon making software for a set of AR glasses called CastAR. They had just raised a million dollars of their own on Kickstarter, and I hacked so hard that they gave me my first real job in immersive tech, back in 2014.</p>\n<p>https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/000/216/807/large/ryan-smith-4clip22.jpg?1411426101</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>It was early. Way way too early, for a company to try and build a top-to-bottom hardware and software stack with their own drivers, their own content marketplace, plug-ins, SDK and all the rest. Their Kickstarter imagined a world where the glasses would ship to the first backers in 2014, and by 2015 everyone would have access to a cheap AR headset with games, OS and all the rest. (I'll write another post about the fate of CastAR)</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>So CastAR was too early for AR in 2013, but by early 2016, Microsoft released the first HoloLens for $3000.</p>\n<p>But even that was too early. With bleeding edge tracking and rendering technology on an embedded processor, Microsoft also went so far as to make an entire version of Windows to support it, and ported most of their apps over as well. Don't get me wrong, the HoloLens is amazing, and two years later is still seems futuristic, but it is 2018, and even now it is still too freaking early.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Next in line is Magic Leap, the insanely well funded startup making glasses that nobody is allowed to talk about. They seem to have several years more runway before they have to launch a product...which is fine, because it is too early.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>So when will it not be too early? Sadly, when <strong>Apple</strong> finally joins in. <br>\n<br>\n</p>\n<p>Yeah, it's sad but true. My friends often joke that in 2020, Apple will take over the world by \"inventing\" AR. As someone who was working on it in 2014, I laugh along, but the barrier between \"too early,\" and \"perfectly timed\" is a billion dollar question. It's not just when the technology works, and there is some good content, and there is minimal friction. It's when all those things and more align perfectly, and the average person simply has to have it.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>VR is still in a dangerous place because Mark Zuckerberg bought a VR startup called Oculus for $3 billion dollars in 2014. The headsets launched two years later with the bare minimum of content, and the several hundred thousand early adopters love the crap out of them...but the other 7 billion people on the planet don't care. VR is still waiting on the perfect headset and the perfect content to make it the \"obviously I need this,\" product, and I have my fingers crossed that 2018 will see more people start to buy them. <br>\n</p>\n<p>But as someone who has founded two VR companies, and has been asked by investors dozens of times \"is this tech just too early?\" I am finally relenting and accepting that yeah, maybe I should have been mining bitcoin this whole time.</p>\n<p>To bookend my little diatribe here, I am not enough of an expert to know if Blockchain is too early. Those who have made millions from almost nothing are surely feeling awesome, but hearing about a company with like 6 employees that pulled in $32 million from an ICO gives me a lot of reason to question things. To their credit, folks who <em><strong>\"got in too early\"</strong></em> on bitcoin are rich as sin, while those who <em><strong>\"got out too early\"</strong></em> are angry and surly and probably trying to invent a time machine.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I picked my poison, and as a result am one of the leading experts in a field where the experts are all either flat broke, or work at Facebook. The folks who chose crypto certainly make me look like an idiot by comparison, but maybe this AR VR stuff will pay off some day!</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "This is true. The only thing I had a go on recently was the Google cardboard which was such a tease it just gave me an idea about VR. It was fun but glitchy and unrealistic. I would love to try the Hollowlens! I've been waiting to grab the more expensive AAA titles like Star Trek: Bridge Crew, Fallout 4 VR, and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rickality, but decided not to miss this sale.\n\nOther top titles I'd recommend are:\n\nArizona Sunshine - 40% off\nFruit Ninja VR - 40% off\nCall of the Starseed Ep 1 and 2, 60% off and 20% off respectively.\nRaw Data tends to be a must have shooter as well, but at only 20% off it's still one of the most expensive titles out there.\n\nThese work for Vive and Rift. \n\n\nCheers!",

I find myself writing in stream of consciousness, then reading it again before hitting \"Post\" \"Submit\" or \"Send\" and immediately realizing I went too far. \n\nSo...I don't send them. I bottle them up, censor myself, play nice, and convince the world I am not a huge opinionated asshole. \n\nMy email drafts folder is full of shit that would burn bridges, salt the earth, and end my professional career forever. I'm not sure if the change over time is that I am more careful of what I say out loud on digital platforms, or if I am just more of an asshole than I used to be, and must therefore censor myself more. It's a mystery.",
