      "body": "Ok, so this has happened to me. An unexpected sexual harassment experience:\n\n\n\nI graduated with an accounting degree from a local university in January this year. With a friend’s recommendation, I worked in a CPA firm as an intern for two months. After that, I got an offer from a tax firm and worked as a graduate accountant there for three months. When the tax season ended, my contract ended as well. I went through a period of time looking for a new accounting job. I tried applying online through Seek; sending emails to HR and managers as well as contacting agents. After all that, I still struggled to find a job so I decided to hand in my resume in person.\n\n\n\nI walked into a few firms and handed in my resumes. I then later got a text inviting me for an interview the following day. A week after the interview, I received a text message offering me an unpaid three months of work experience.\n\n\n\nIn the first two months, I learnt how to complete tax returns as well as learning bookkeeping skills. I appreciate the skills I have learnt at this firm but I don’t deserve the sexual harassment.\n\n\n\nI found the boss to be quite strange at the very beginning by the way he talked to me and looked at me. But I didn’t want to let this get in the way of the potential work experience I could gain. I chose to believe that was just his character and I needed somewhere to start my career.\n\n\n\nThere is a nice young man working there as well and was mentoring me most of the time. Yes, it was only a small firm with only three of us. I would only meet the boss during lunch breaks for about 1 to 2 hours everyday.\n\n\n\nI appreciate the experience because as international students, even though I have graduated from university and been granted a visa with working rights, I am not qualified to apply for most of the graduate programs as many are open to Australian permanent residents and citizens only. It was sad to see that every time when I walked into a career fair, I would see a large notice at the firms stall with the visa criteria on it. I walked away disappointed each time as my visa was not allowed for most of the opportunities.\n\n\n\nIt seems though graduate programs are almost the only way to get paid and professional training after graduation. When looking for jobs outside of graduate programs, most of the employers expected graduates to have working experience. However, international students are not able to participate in most of the graduate programs because of the visa limitation, where do you expect us to get the experience?\n\n\n\nBack to the topic, the employer at the firm I was working with did not touch me and this is why I kept working for him. All his strange behaviour was purely verbal and vague. He would tell me random things such as a way to be successful is to have a rich boyfriend. It was very hard to distinguish between whether he was serious or joking. I was tolerating this and he even once tried to add me on Facebook. I did not respond to his friend request as I wanted to keep this relationship professional. A few days later, I received his message on messenger: ‘is that you, is that you lol?’.\n\n\n\nTwo days ago, after work he texted me and asked if I want another boyfriend like ‘one is committed and one is not committed’.\n\n\n\nEnough is enough. He knew I was happily in a relationship already and I couldn’t keep doing this anymore.\n\n\n\nI then remembered one of my friends had posted about half a year ago on her wechat account that she had worked at this firm in the past. I didn’t talk to her when I just started my training because we are not very close. But now when I messaged her to ask about her experiences and she said it was too hard to explain over messaging so she then gave me a call.\n\n\n\nShe told me that she worked there about 2 to 3 months before, also for work experience. Back then, there were two girls working there together and she said the boss had harassed both of them by accidentally touching them. She was angry with his behaviour and informed him to stop. Eventually, she couldn’t tolerant it anymore and resigned during her lunch break. The boss was shocked. The other girl heard that she had quit, so then she left the day after. \n\n\n\nIf I didn’t text my friend, I would still be unsure if he is just very inappropriate or causing sexual harassment.\n\n\n\nI’m an international student and came to Australia over three years ago. My family is overseas and I am still unsure about Australian culture. Sometimes, when things happen in my life, I feel alone and don’t know where to seek help.\n\n\n\nAn UK pool of data shows one in five women have been sexually harassed in the workplace and it can happen to males too.\n\n\n\nYou can see I’m not mentioning which firm this is or revealing identities of any characters. I’m not going to do anything until I know what is the appropriate way to deal with a situation like this.\n\n\n\nAt the moment there are so many other things that I need to focus my time on but at the same time I don’t want to keep silent. I want to make the public aware that this still happens in the workplace and I hope we can reduce and hopefully end it in the future.\n\n\n\nIf I don’t say anything, sexual harassment will just keep going on. I’m not the only one and I believe I won’t be the last one.\n\n\n\nAfter chatting with a few friends and colleagues, no one really knows the action I can take and think that there is not much that can be done. I hope this is not the case.\n\n\n\nTo be honest, I don’t understand why he would take things so far, because by doing so, he has actually lost a great accountant that could have been a great asset to his firm.\n\n\n\nI need lots of love and caring during these times, not just from my close friends but also from the public.\n\n\n\nI know by now it seems that ‘there is not much that can be done about this’ but I believe it won’t be like this forever as society becomes more aware of this occurring in a workplace.",
