bodyHello folks, This is @jasladin here today. I guess school work got me hibernating in Steemit, but hey! I am back and this is my first steemstem post. Biology has always been interesting, challenging, confusing, especially with the tongue biting names. Though I remember jumping through the window in my senior high 1, during biology class, not because the names were too big to pronounce or memorize, it was not, because I was not good at neat drawing, since the teacher said, my drawing should not be artistic but rather simple and neat, no, not that, not even because the class was a give away time to meet my science boys (*smiles* memories), but because I had to pee and the teacher won't allow it. 😁 Hope you were not thinking I was a bad student. <br> Today I want to share with you on something simple, yet facilitating. Have you ever wondered where bones are from? Let's take a flash back to biology and bones. I will be sharing with you based on bony and cartilaginous fish. <div class="pull-left"> <center>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaox9a9ZCpSLttKYcsnZqPRKQhzZuSf8hbx8xNwpKaRfn/Guiyu_BW.jpg<a href="https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Guiyu_BW.jpg">bony fishe [License: CC-BY-SA 3.0, Author: ArthurWeasley, Source: Wikicommons]</a></center></div> [Bonyfishes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteichthyes) are fishes that belongs to the class called **OSTEICHTHYES** I know the pronouncing it can be tongue biting, so this is how you pronounce it *ahs tee IHK thees* This means bony fish. Examples of bony fishes are Fishes, You know, tuna and whatnot, trout, catfish, perch, guppies, salmon and most other familiar fishes. The bony fishes as the name implies have skeleton of bones instead of cartilage. Bony fishes first appeared more than 400 years ago, although bony fishes are now more abundant in fresh water and salt water, I believe they probably appeared first in fresh water. <div class="pull-right"> <center>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdgp9NmymvU8tHSP2RaTz8gkpsaDuJ8GJjNsBUgGwLde3/742px-Breathing_in_fish.jpg<a href="https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Breathing_in_fish.jpg">The inner chamber of a bony fish [License: CC-BY-SA 4.0, Author: Cruithne9, Source: Wikicommons]</a></center></div> The early bony fishes were small and had gills to absorb oxygen from the air. In the ancestors of most modern bony fishes, lungs evolved into the swim bladder, which is a gas filled sac used to regulate buoyancy. The gills of bony fishes are housed in a common chamber on each side of the head. Each chamber is covered by a hard plate called operculum, which is pronounced as *oh PUR kyoo luhm* as seen in the diagram above. Unlike the shark, the lobes of the bony fishes are symmetrical. We should all be loosely aware that we descended from fish in one way or another, so it's reasonable to suggest we came from the bony ones. https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmb66DyR8uC5rQvegWkVJmBySM3XzDVT4Zb87yhXtCSCkj/PicsArt_02-25-12.35.38.jpg #### <center>But why did bones form instead of cartilage which clearly is a working model even to this day?</center> <br> #### <center>Cartilage</center> Let's go with the shark. <div class="pull-left"> <center>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmT21nLGUhTc2CBLvctZm6qWHjJkYieQveyCuMSh1GFNpa/Whiteshark-TGoss5b.jpg<a href="https://www.pri.org/stories/2014-06-11/search-super-predator-snacks-great-white-sharks ">The great white shark as an example of cartilaginous fish[License: Public Domain]</a></center></div> They belong to the **CHONDRICHTHYES** class, pronounced as *Kahn DRIHK thees*. The skeleton here are composed of of flexible substance called **cartilage**. When you get the chance to touch a cartilaginous fish such as shark, rays, you'll get to feel the rough sand paper-like skin. This is as a result of the many scales that are embedded in the skin. Now aside from the current day where humans are rendering them extinct within a century or so in order to enjoy some tasteless soup, sharks have thrived for millions of years, unchanged and unevolved that whole time. https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmb66DyR8uC5rQvegWkVJmBySM3XzDVT4Zb87yhXtCSCkj/PicsArt_02-25-12.35.38.jpg *Or so we thought* 🤔 <br> The problem is, cartilage doesn't preserve as well as bone, so it's a lot harder to keep a good track record of their history. Cartilage is more of a kind of rubbery tissue that in bony creatures, gets replaced with bones once the 'frame' is set (aside from like, our noses and whatever). ##### <center>But sharks never evolved it into bone. why?</center> For a long time, researchers just kind of assumed sharks were a primitive remnant, a 'living fossil' as they like to say. They simply managed to survive with old material. But recently, this has been entirely overturned. After 60 years of coming up blank, one archaeological site in Western Australia, the Gogo Formation brought up some ancient shark fossils that were very interesting indeed. Not only was it a unique find in an ocean of fossils that were rich in fauna but up to this point lacking in sharks, but they found that the 380 million year old cartilage was very much like modern day shark's cartilage. On top of this, the matrix holding the cartilage together had bone cells visible within its structure - something absent in modern day sharks. <div class="pull-center"> <center>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRyszMSMi38bJFMhEhuq5H765BXH2PgbLy57T69zc5xr8/shark-674867_1280.jpg<a href="https://pixabay.com/en/shark-animal-hazard-teeth-fish-674867/">cartilaginous fish [License: public domain Source: pixabay]</a></center></div> In essence, this discovery made us realise that sharks had at some point developed bones, and had since lost them in favour of cartilage, making them a lot more up-to-date evolutionarily than we're always taught in school. It seems likely that sharks would have done this to gain an advantage in the speed and flexibility departments, enhancing their hunting abilities. A rubbery, lightweight skeleton would be far better than a hefty, stiff one in the case of big ocean dwelling hunters. But the part that got me interested most here is that there were cells within the cartilage structure that resembled bone cells. Is this to say they evolved together? #### <center>Bones</center> <div class="pull-right"> <center>https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf82Gc2APTxHwfhdQbzXks7HF1erZ6SsHiNbrYbDBg7XJ/pexels-photo-302239.jpeg<a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/bones-dinosaur-history-london-302239/">Evolution of bones[License: Public Domain]</a></center></div> Bones have only been around about half a billion years, and has served very useful not just as a structural tool, but a defensive one. Unique to vertebrates, studies suggest bone wasn't even a possible option for the longest time, and the reason is likely to do with oxygen. Today, our atmosphere is about 20% oxygen, but back in the day, this number was closer to 0.1%. Then, a so far mysterious period called The Great Oxygenation Event occurred about 2.5 billion years ago, and oxygen started to rise significantly. boom, just like that. I guess a little more complicated. This changed the chemistry of the oceans, rocks and beyond. For example, Dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) was a mineral dominating rocks before the oxygen rise, but these rocks were largely replaced by limestone, a rock rich in both Aragonite and Calcite (CaCO3 - two different crystal forms of the same mineral). This was an important advancement for the formation of bone (I bet you thought I was going off on some unrelated tangent), because Calcium Carbonate crystals can form quickly and with little energy compared to that of Dolomite. To add to this, the continental erosion of I suppose billions of tonnes of Calcium would have washed away and filled the seas with the much needed ingredients. This new technology was now abundant and animals were (in perspective) quick to take advantage in a kind of skeleton revolution. This has been confirmed in the fossil records, with soft bodied creatures in the days of Dolomite and skeleton animals during the later Limestone days. After that, evolution continued to do its work and, well, here we are! War between the bones and cartilages, who wins? In the family tree of life, both bony and cartilage fish evolved from a common ancestor called Placoderms, an armour plated fish that represents one of the earliest jawed fish dating back to about 420 million years ago - well into the oxygenation bony era. #### <center>let's look at China</center> In 2013, a fossil was found in Qujing, China called Entelognathus. This animal is interesting in that it seems somewhat hybridised. the neck, body and tail are reminiscent of the Placodermi, but the head and its bone patterns looked like modern day fish. This gave some insight as to howskeletons formed; It all began with the head. The timeline was once thought to be something along the lines of the placodermi evolving a primitive bony structure, animals then losing this and then re-evolving modern-day bones. Meanwhile, sharks and other cartilaginous fish didn't bother and just lived with their rubbery bones. Our new understanding shows that the Placodermi skeleton simply evolved into modern day skeletons face first, this also adds to the argument that sharks are actually more evolved in this regard than we, having since done away with bones in favour of cartilage at some later date which, if you remember above, was probably around 380 million years or so ago compared to bones at 420 mya. #### <center>Well there it is, and now to rap it all up.</center> Bone evolved when the chemical properties of the earth were changed by some currently unexplained event allowing bones to form, and modern bones formed face first in an old fish. Cartilaginous skeletons actually came after the bony structures, split from us on the evolutionary tree to sharks, and we continued with the old model. I'd like to point out once again that much of this information is buried in questions, controversy and mystery that we are, as a species slowly picking apart and becoming increasingly objective towards Well *the more we learn, the more questions arise* I guess that's why we keep evolving in knowledge. And so many questions keep coming to mind. When exactly did bones come to exist? Did bones evolve once, or multiple times? What molecular mechanisms made our soft tissue become hard? And so on. I am pretty sure the answers are fourth coming as technology advances, and I hope to be alive to witness the era. <br> ### <center>References</center> * http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/11/how-did-animals-get-their-skeletons * https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK10056/ * https://theconversation.com/no-bones-about-it-sharks-evolved-cartilage-for-a-reason-42258 <br> Thanks for reading. ![images (3).jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVYg1mbxpDAZi6mm9TLgoV1sCTLmn9emo5oG7YjbH8Rja/images%20(3).jpeg) 😘

God knows I wasn't happy at all as I was already pouring curses on whoever the caller might be. My night was terrible and I slept so late due to the numerous thoughts that flowed through my head. I felt I needed someone whose hands I'll pour my innumerable fears and thoughts but my bad; I needed time to edit and rehearse on the words I should say. I loved being formal and coded. I stretched my beautiful body carefully, not like I'm a braggart but tons of people I've told me I have a "killer body", they even advised me to go into modeling already. They didn't just know. They didn't know modelling was for the rich. Throwing up my legs, I raised my body and unplugged my fully charged phone. When I saw the caller, my heart sank into my stomach and it began rumbling probably due to the heavy load it carried. It was Mr Dickson though I prefered calling him Mr Dee, the name Dickson was like a profane word. I hated F-words and dick-bla-bla was one, too heavy for my mouth. Sometimes I even wondered why his parents had to give him such name. I answered the phone "Good morning Sir, how was your night"? I asked like I really cared. Jessica, my course mate would always say, "na condition dey make crayfish bend" and whatever business I had with Mr Dee was prompted by a serious monetary condition. "My dear, it's well. Good morning baby" Damn, Yuck, I'm 21 for crying out loud and I'm not a baby. I felt like screaming that to him. That name coming from him was just too irritating and I felt like puking whenever it came but shebi it's this condition. "Thank God Sir. How's your wife and kids"? His voice became cold as he answered "Fine" that was the only thing that gave me joy. The way he acted like I shouldn't just talk about his wife and kids. But I knew he had them so if he liked he could keep a cold voice or even freeze. "Uhmm, my wife won't be around today, so will you come to my house to get the money? It's ready. Hope your Landlord has calmed down o and hope you ate yesterday"? Too many questions at once for just one person! "Yes sir, I talked to my Landlord yesterday and he gave me till next week to get the money ready. Alright sir, I'll just come to the house. But where will aunty go?" "she'll go to church, Bible study every Tuesdays. But it's not like it matters if she was around o, I don't just want her to start thinking otherwise. You know women na. She mayn't know that nothing is going on between us" Mmekab nkob.. Who said you didn't love it that she wouldn't be around when you've been trying some stupid innocent looking moves with me all because I begged for money. I felt I could tell him those lines but I didn't want to lose that opportunity. I laid back on my bed. My low quality bed that sank whenever I sat or laid down on it. We talked for a little more time and I exhaled sharply when he ended his call finally. I snuggled myself into my own arms feeling too exhausted to get up and prepare for my 10am lectures. ***** My name is Emily and I don't think straight all the time. I'm the only child of my parents. Having lost my father to the cold hands of death when I was 17 years old life has not been the same. It's just annoying whenever I remember that my dad was just very rich and famous but he died intestate, leaving his wealth to my cruel Uncle: Jack. Since then it's been hell upon several others for us. I worked for 3 years after writing my WAEC and was able to provide for my mom, myself and save some money for school. I study Mass communication in Akwa ibom state university and I'm a 200l student. It gives me joy to know I've gotten this far. I had become so bankrupt lately. And my rents had to be renewed. Mr Dee, was a family friend, a rich politician in his early 40s, And I was advised by many to talk to him about my problems. The day I did, he really commended me for believing in him and not going astray to find help. He gave me some thousands of Naira which I won't mention for fear of robbery and he promised to help me with the rent. I thought he was just cool and caring until he retired to running his fragile hands on my thighs or helping to remove things from my bra that he pushed in before rendering any help. I just wished he could help me finally with the rent and then I'd cut off every relationship with him. It was not even actually a relationship but I just wanted to stop seeing him with my eyes. I hated him with zeal for more. I was just ashamed, I couldn't tell my mom neither could I tell my boyfriend. And meeting him today was a terrible one. I wished many times that I had my own money. On my bed, I peeked out through the window, the early morning overcast was just beautiful to behold and I didn't have enough reasons to doubt that there was A God in heaven. I was thinking of some beautiful plans to help me avoid any irritating act with the Dickson of a man. I came up with an idea. A good one. I smiled. ****** I went to Uyo road by 6:35pm, 35mins later than I should have been. Feeling scared and excited and scared at the same time. I knocked on the door and got in with Angelina my cousin. I explained that I'd gone to the park from my mother's house to pick up my cousin. Good enough, she had a very big school bag on her back to justify my lie. She looked very polite and cool. We sat on the couch and we were given something to drink and some crackers. We'd not even been talking for long when my cousin's phone started ringing. It was actually an alarm. She snoozed it and told me it was my mother that called. I looked scared but told her to answer the call. She didn't do it after all. It rang again and again and again until Mr Dee asked her to answer it. Just then, she played the audio I had recorded, mimicking my mom's voice. It was loud enough to be heard by the man, my helper. My mom cursed and shouted, queried and asked and my cousin answered her from time to time. She asked to speak with me. She queried me for taking so long, she threatened me with curses and tears were dropping from my eyes already. I told her I was on my way. And she supposedly, stopped talking. I pressed the power button and cleaned off the tears from my face. Uncle Dee didn't want to implicate himself you know. He asked why my mom was so aggressive. "of course, I'm her only child and she's trying to protect me" "Take this, I wish I could do better" I collected and smiled. It was heavy, I could imagine that it was a huge sum though I didn't know how much. I dropped it carefully into my handbag and got up. "I really need to go Sir " "Yes, you have to. Can I drop you at home and beg your mother"? "No, no Sir, she'd kill me " "OK OK, just go" "call me when you get home" "thank you very much sir. I will. Thank you Sir. Good bye Sir" "Hug me first jare" "oow, " I ambled to where he sat as he got up and squeezed me into a tight embrace. His cologne was cool yet I still felt nauseous. I waved goodbye after he freed me and hurried home. We got home and I could not wait to see the amount. I dipped my hand Into my bag and got pricked by the open safety pin I'd thrown the previous day. "Jeeeeez" I screamed and flung the bag. And boom, the money fell on the ground. On top of it was written #230,000. "Jeeeeeez.... Jeeeeeez" Thanks for reading Thanks for reading.

body![image](https://img.esteem.ws/g9vv2jyt8l.jpg) **GLAUCOMA** Light is a gift, yet we walk around every day and some end up in darkness. What is the benefit of light without sight? Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms. Glaucoma can be described as a medical condition in which normal fluid pressure inside the eyes known as intraocular pressure, slowly rises when the aqueous humour which normally flows in and out of the eye cannot drain it properly. Instead the fluid collects and causes pressure damage to the optic nerve leading to blindness. Statistics has shown that glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness worldwide and the 1st leading cause of irreversible blindness. It has also shown that 77 million people worldwide are affected. **There are 3 main types** *1 **Congenital glaucoma**: It is due to developmental abnormalities and is seen in babies and young children. *2 **Open angle glaucoma** This is the most common. It is as a result of obstruction of the drainage of the fluid. *3 **Secondary glaucoma** It is secondary to other medical conditions like diabetes, eye surgery, cataracts, e.t.c. It is often asymptomatic until the late stage (blindness). It can be detected on eye examination. During the posterior segment examination of the eye, the optic cup disc ratio is checked. Normal cup disc ratio is between 0.1 – 0.3 Suspected case of glaucoma is between 0.4 – 0.6 Actual case of glaucoma is from 0.7 above There are other confirmatory tests that can be done to confirm the diagnosis of glaucoma and which include: itemIntraocular pressure estimation Pachymetry Central visual field assessment e.t.c. The treatment is aimed at reducing the intraocular pressure and preventing blindness. **The treatment methods available are**: * Medical treatment * Surgical treatment * Laser use **Medical treatment**: This involves the use of the following drugs – Beta blockers, Alpha agonists, Prostaglandins analogs, Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, Osmotic agents, e.t.c. ![image](https://img.esteem.ws/r4kwahtnsy.jpg) As the saying goes >A stitch in time saves nine”, Early detection and treatment is the best method of treatment for glaucoma. GO DO AN EYE EXAMINATIO TODAY AND KNOW YOUR STATUS TO PREVENT BLINDNESS.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms. \n\n\tGlaucoma can be described as a medical condition in which normal fluid pressure inside the eyes known as intraocular pressure, slowly rises when the aqueous humour which normally flows in and out of the eye cannot drain it properly.
