I already had a cheap, nasty laptop and an Internet connection, so that's why I didn't have to spend any cash on those. Since I wasn’t very happy with my laptop’s built-in mic, I also frittered away $7 on a cheap and nasty mic. As it happened, I’d already spent $42 on an Internet site package, but that wasn’t completely essential to the process, and I could have just used a free site like Blogger instead.\n\nIt looks like you’ve already got Internet access and a computer, so maybe you’ve got everything you need to start, if the idea appeals to you.\n\nThe Internet has given us incredible opportunities for making money without actually having any money. You can put up a blog for free, write some articles for it and sell other people’s product as an affiliate, taking a cut when you make a sale.\n\nWhat I actually did was a combination of things. In 2011 I left my job and moved somewhere where rents are low, compared to salaries paid in Western Europe; Hungary. I had some savings, but I needed them for things like food.\n\nFirst I offered online lessons in computer programming. I was also teaching English in person, but I had to spend some cash on adverts in the backs of newspapers to get anywhere with that. It turns out that some Hungarians will basically pay a native English speaker to just speak English with them, so important has English become.\n\nI found people to teach programming to by putting ads on my own site, where I’d already written some articles about programming, although my first regular student found me through Guru.com, which is free to use.\n\nPeople paid me through PayPal. After a while I began to record YouTube videos on programming, to try to find more clients for my lessons.  I was only recording my screen and voice, with free screen recording software. I didn't think many people were going to watch my videos, but in the end, they did; eventually by the hundreds of thousands in various places. \n\nI was as surprised as you would be if you recorded some YouTube videos explaining something and people actually watched them.
