| body | <h2>What I Learned from Rereading "The Little Schemer"</h2> A few years ago, I tried to work my way through "The Little Schemer," a popular book for beginner Computer Science classes. I read in a review somewhere that the book taught what recursion was all about. I thought I understood recursion--it was just looping over something, repeating a process until you're done, right? But a few weeks ago, when I picked up "The Little Schemer" again, I realized that I had missed the main point. Recursion, in programming, is the process of building complex things from very simple things. For example, in math, you can start with *zero*, *the number one*, and *addition*. And from those three simple things, you can build every whole number. Add one plus one, and you get two. Two plus one gets three. And then you can add subtraction to get all the negative integers. And then throw in division, and you get fractions. With a few starting things, you get a very complex system. So as I worked my way through "The Little Schemer" for the second time, I realized that's what the book is all about. They start with a few simple elements, which are called primitives. They are also known as *data types* and *operations*. And with these, they build an entire programming language. And then I realized that all computer languages are built this way. It's just that when we start learning to code by learning a higher-level language (like Javascript), we learn all the functions that are useful. We learn **how to do things** with the language, but not **about** programming itself. We can miss out on learning *design patterns*, which are (according to Wikipedia) "general, reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems within a given context." And that is what "The Little Schemer" is all about. When we see how to start with simple things, and the ways we make more complex things, we learn the design patterns. So when we approach new programming tasks, we start to recognize where we can use a design pattern; it will be different from language to language, but the ideas are the same. This doesn't mean that everyone should **start** by reading "The Little Schemer." Personally, that definitely did **not** work for me--I was frustrated, and didn't figure it out until after I had worked with Javascript. That's when it all made sense. In other words, sometimes the best way to learn something is to find the way that you enjoy the most, that makes you the least frustrated. For me, adding the theory *after* practicing building things with the language, and *enjoying* it, made the most sense. |

| body | Mindfulness Meditation is everywhere right now, and for good reason. There are tons of benefits to a consistent meditation practice, which have been studied and reported all over the place. So how does this apply to coding? I think one of the biggest challenges to learning how to code, especially for self-taught developers, is maintaining energy and enthusiasm, while battling that feeling of overwhelm, the inner voice that says, "There's so much to learn, and I just don't know if I can do it." Over the past year, I've been developing a consistent mindfulness meditation routine, and even though my goals in meditating didn't (at first) relate to coding, I've found out that my energy and enthusiasm for coding has been growing right along with my meditation skills. I think this is because: 1. meditation can help replace fear and anxiety with a calm confidence, and 2. when those negative emotions are replaced with positive ones, it leads to more energy and engagement. This creates a positive feedback loop. The more energy you have, the more you learn and build things, and this grows your confidence, which creates more motivation to keep meditating. Meditation and coding are also related in the sense that there is **so much** information out there about both of them, it can be daunting to just figure out where to start. So, if you're thinking about beginning to meditate, I'd like to see if I can make it feel simpler and easier to get started. First, *you can do it*. If you can sit in a chair for five minutes, you can start meditating. Second, what is mindfulness meditation? I've read books and blogs and watched videos, and my favorite, and simplest, answer to this question comes from teacher Shinzen Young, who describes mindfulness meditation as any practice that: 1. develops *concentration* (the ability to direct attention to an object and sustain it), 2. develops *clarity* (the ability to detect different parts of an experience), and 3. increases *equanimity* (the feeling of being at peace with exactly how things are in this moment). You can read more about Shinzen's ideas, and find some great exercises here: https://unifiedmindfulness.com/what-is-mindfulness-by-shinzen/ Here's a link to a free program that was developed by Shinzen: https://unifiedmindfulness.com/core (NOTE: The "Unified Mindfulness" program does offer paid courses--I haven't taken the paid courses, and I'm not affiliated with that website. I'm putting these links here because they offer a lot of great, free information and practices. In my opinion, Shinzen Young is one of the best resources on the internet for offering free useful info about meditation. For example, there are hours and hours of Youtube videos of his talks and guided meditations.) Finally, I'd like to list two other resources that have been really helpful to my establishing a regular practice over the past year. 1. **"The Mind Illuminated" by Culadasa (John Yeats, Ph.D).** This is a fantastic book if you want to start with a simple, structured practice. 2. **The free "Insight Timer" app.** (I got it from the Google Play store, I believe it's also available for IPhone.) This is a less structured way to get started, but it gives you tons of options for listening to different kinds of meditations, so you can try different things, and see what you enjoy and is most helpful. If you're thinking about it, I highly recommend giving meditation a try. When I started, my main goal was to reduce anxiety, but I've also become much more focused, engaged and effective at learning and working on coding projects. There are **all kinds** of side benefits to starting to meditate, and if the idea of having more energy and excitement about coding motivates you to try it out, fantastic! |

| body | Mindfulness Meditation is everywhere right now, and for good reason. She talks about learning to code, switching careers, going to meetups and conferences. Basically just jumping in with both feet. | body | This post is such a gut check for me. I've been wanting to learn sign language and code and even found some free online classes that I think would be great. However I haven't committed to them and that seems to be my biggest issue. For one I don't know how to prioritize my time I haven't been in school in quite a bit of time. Also, I know if I don't make some sort of financial investment I won't follow through with it. I need financial investment for accountability. However after reading your post I am a little bit more encouraged and motivated to go through with it. Hopefully... maybe.. thanks for sharing :) |

| body | Awesome! Hope it helps. I think I've used Codeacademy--there are are so many different ones I lose track. I think Codeacademy (and another one called Codeschool) are interactive, so you actually type the code into the lesson. That can be a great way to get started because you don't have to download lots of stuff onto your computer before you even start learning. I think the most important thing, more important than finding the "perfect" learning tool, is to do *something*, anything, to just get started. Because when you accomplish something, your motivation grows. But if you spend too much time thinking about how to start, it can drain all your energy. (I know because I do that a lot myself.) |

| body | I've seen or heard lots of stories about a Universal Basic Income (UBI), most in favor of it, based on ideas of fairness, or the belief that all people should be guaranteed a basic standard of living. These are important arguments, and I agree with many of them. I think of these as "values-based" arguments--the UBI should exist because it is the right thing to do. They are important arguments, but there is another perspective that I haven't heard much about. How would a UBI system work that would ensure equality, and not create greater wealth disparity? In an article posted on NewCo Shift, <a href= "https://shift.newco.co/the-real-reason-this-elephant-chart-is-terrifying-421e34cc4aa6">The real reason this elephant chart is terrifying</a>, Kaila Colbin discusses how incomes have been growing among different populations as global productivity has grown. She uses the graph below. <center>Source: Lakner and Milanovic, 2015</center> These populations roughly fit into three groups: 1. **Everyone to the left of the 70th percentile.** These are the world's lowest income earners, and they have seen their incomes grow (by large percentages compared to what they were making), *but not enough* for most to climb out of poverty. 2. **The one percent, the dot on the far right.** These are the world's richest people; they have gotten much richer. 3. **Everyone in between the two, the big dip.** That represents mostly the middle classes of industrialized nations. They haven't made much progress. So consider this: would a Universal Basic Income change this, or would it only guarantee a low threshold of income to everyone? Would it be like a very low minimum wage--it guarantees something, but does not really combat growing wealth disparity? The debate about a UBI, it seems to me, has focused on this idea: as global productivity grows (largely due to automation, i.e. robots and code) people should be guaranteed a minimum standard of living. But it hasn't asked this question: can a UBI help ensure a more equitable distribution of the wealth gained by increasing automation (and increasing efficiency and productivity in general)? That does raise other very charged issues and big questions, about how economic systems work--how income is paid and to whom and for what--and the philosophies behind them, and how well they can or should continue to work in a rapidly changing global economy. And I think that's the conversation we need to be having. |
