| body | ##
Do we use only 10% of our brain?
#####
This allegedly scientific falsehood refuses to die. We tell you why it is a hoax

https://images.clarin.com/2015/11/25/SJxvCPxVx_930x525.jpg

Source

According to neurologists, we use almost **100% of the brain** at all times, but many people still think that we do not use more than a tenth. As if the rest were permanently off, when magnetic resonance imaging and CT scans have been demonstrating just the opposite for decades. It would be extraordinary if our gray mass worked so little, because we would be faced with the first tangible proof that an organ can maintain its functions when **90% of its cells are useless**. And what about brain tumors or strokes? It would be a misfortune more than remarkable that they were always primed with that modest tenth we use. The audacity of the supporters of this assumption of undetermined origin goes so far as to attribute to **Albert Einstein** a false appointment in which the famous physicist would have defended its veracity. But where does the persistent force of this myth come from? Maybe our narcissism: we like to think that we only use 10% of our brain capacity. If we do so much with so little, how far would we go if we took advantage of the rest? The evidence against this idea is overwhelming. Our great brain demands a head of good size, and that is why we are born before we are prepared to survive alone. If we continue to develop in the uterus, the head will grow until it does not pass through the cervix at birth. And it does not make sense from the **evolutionary point of view to develop an organ that we are going to waste almost completely**. If the claim refers to **10% of brain regions**, it is easy to refute. The scanners have proven that an action as simple as closing and opening a fist requires the participation of much more than a tenth of the brain. If you want to say that refers to the neurons, the absurd is total: they are too valuable and complex for the body to leave nine out of ten unemployed. The brain remains busy even when we do nothing. It already has enough to control unconscious functions such as **breathing and the beating of the heart**. And image technologies have taught us that their activity is intense even in the depths of sleep, in which a large number of brain areas are involved. |

We are increasingly aware of the importance of our body language, and we are aware that many times an expression or gesture is more effective and transmits our message much more strongly than any word we say. For some years, scientists have gone a step further and are studying how concrete changes in our postures trigger physiological responses in our brain capable of modifying our emotions and feelings. That is to say: in the same way that when we feel sad and depressed we walk shrunken, we "close" as if we wanted to be invisible, and when we are happy or feel confident we walk more rights and we "open up" ... can we do the opposite way ? If we adopt a more upright posture, will we feel better, more positive and confident? According to a paper published in the journal Psychological Science, the answer is yes. The participants in the study had to adopt a certain posture for two minutes. Some of the positions corresponded with "high power": more upright, more open, with a tendency to occupy more space; and others with "low power": more shrunken, more closed, with a tendency to occupy less space. After that, the researchers asked them if they felt powerful, gave them the opportunity to participate in gambling, and took samples of their saliva. The results revealed that, indeed, people who had to adopt "high power" positions felt more powerful at the end of the experiment and more willing to take risks in bets. These feelings corresponded with psychological reactions: a greater secretion of testosterone (hormone typical of positions of dominance) and lower levels of cortisol (hormone that we produce in situations of stress). That is to say: to feel better, with more confidence in ourselves and to be more tolerant to stress, it is enough to change our postural habits. Very simple, right? And, although science is just beginning to unravel these mechanisms, some oriental disciplines such as yoga, which works the body postures to bring about changes in the mind, have been based on them for centuries. Other studies in this line advise us to smile frequently: that simple gesture is able to make us feel in a better mood. ## Body language shapes our identity Social psychologist Amy Cuddy, one of the authors of the work and passionate about non-verbal communication, exposes these and other ideal in a popular TED talk. In it, it reveals fascinating facts, such as the fact that blind people from birth who are first in races or sports competitions acquire the body posture typical of the winners (expanded body and arms raised in a "V" shape). A finding that indicates that body language has an instinctive component, since these people, being blind, can not have copied the expressions of their peers. |

Interestingly, the plot of this action movie has a cosmic equivalent. As determined by a team of astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, some old stars of the Milky Way that are currently spinning at high speed are authentic "time bombs" that could explode as supernovas when they brake. "We have not yet found any of these" time bombs "in the Milky Way, but our study suggests that until now we have been looking for the wrong signals," explains Rosanne Di Stefano, co-author of the research. Specifically, Di Stefano and his colleagues study a type of supernova called "Ia", which occurs when a compact white dwarf is destabilized. As they explain in the latest issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters, when a white dwarf gains mass accelerates its turn and if it moves at sufficient speed can cross the barrier of 1.4 solar masses becomes a massive Chandrasekhar type star . However, if you stop stealing matter, the white dwarf gradually decreases its speed and, in the end, the spin is not enough to counteract gravity, leading to a type Ia supernova. There are two possibilities that would lead to a white dwarf exploding as type Ia supernova. Either accumulate gas from a donor star, or collide with another white dwarf. Astronomers opt for the first scenario. It is estimated that in the galaxy there are three type Ia supernovae every thousand years. If a supermassive white dwarf takes millions of years to slow down and explode, the calculations suggest that there should be dozens of systems ready to explode a few thousand light years from Earth. Now, the challenge for astronomers is to find them. To do this, as Di Stefano has pointed out, one must find small amounts of hydrogen and helium near the explosion of the supernova, measurements that until now were not made. |

Organized in hexagons and forming sheets, carbon atoms give rise to graphene, a material that everyone has heard about for its "incredible" mechanical and electrical properties. But, if this were not enough, carbon is the element on which life is based. The chemical properties of carbon allow this element to join with a large number of different atoms to form huge and complex molecules. In fact, the chemistry of carbon is so varied that it is capable of forming more chemical compounds than the rest of the elements of the periodic table together. That is why it is not surprising that there is organic chemistry, a branch of this science that is dedicated to studying only the compounds that form carbon. On the other hand, living beings are very complex machines with bodies that need to perform a large number of tasks just for the mere fact of existing: our cells are converting sugars into energy in a constant way, deciphering and producing genetic material, transmitting information from a side by side, absorbing and processing nutrients, keeping vital systems functioning ... In short, the body performs a lot of different processes at the same time, so it needs a wide variety of different chemical compounds that are compatible with each other, for to be able to carry them out. That is, as far as we know, carbon is the only element that is capable of supplying a complex organism with the chemical diversity it needs to exist. That's why astrobiologists (scientists who study how life could develop elsewhere in the universe) believe that it is more likely to find intelligent life on other planets if it is based on carbon. That is, they do not simply "because they are closed minded and do not admit other possibilities": carbon is one of the most abundant elements in the universe and is present in the planets to a greater or lesser extent, so it is reasonable to assume that Intelligent life will tend to evolve from it. And, of course, when you have in your hands the possibility of carrying out an experiment whose development costs millions, you will direct your research towards the most reasonable possibility.
|

These are some of the applications of the biotechnology projects of the Genoma Foundation that are already present in the **shopping cart**. "Since the human being dominates the world, has tried to domesticate plants and animals for their benefit and, with it, has starred in such a process of genetic improvement that the **food we know today have nothing to do with the primitives**," says its director , Fernando Garcés, who emphasizes that the Genome Foundation focuses its research on those aspects of food that arouse greater interest among the producers themselves. Thus, for example, the sole study, called Pleurogene, has allowed to sequence its genetic map and select the "liveliest and strongest" fingerlings to reduce malformations and control the cultivation of the species in captivity. As a result, Spain could soon lead the production of this fish in the world. Among the following candidates to be studied are hake, octopus, cuttlefish or cuttlefish. For its part, olive oil and table olives are the protagonists of the Oligen project, launched this year, which studies how to make the fruit fall more easily or that the tree can grow in the form of a hedge to improve mechanized harvesting. . Another project of the foundation is **GrapeGen**, a study on table grapes that has identified the genes and proteins associated with vine quality traits. **The study of 600 grape varieties has concluded that** "crossing very few varieties we can obtain new ones that if they manage to be crispy, without seeds or with antioxidants will allow modifying the market and forcing other companies to pay royalties". On the other hand, the Genome Foundation has also announced that next year it will convene a contest to develop research on how to obtain energy from algae or enzymes. |

It is a quasar from a time when our universe was only 7% of its current age. A quasar is a galaxy that orbits a supermassive black hole that actively feeds on material. The light and radio emissions we see are caused by the material around the black hole, called the accretion disk. This disk contains dust and gas rotating at incredible speeds -like the water that goes down a drain-, generating an immense friction when attracted by the massive gravitational force of the central black hole. As they consume matter, it expels powerful jets of plasma at almost the speed of light. These jets are extremely bright in the radio frequency spectrum. It was precisely this signal emanating from the recently discovered quasar, called PSO J352.4034-15.3373 (P352-15 for short), which was collected by the Very Long Baseline Array radio telescope. "There is a shortage of powerful radio transmitters known from the early universe and this is the most brilliant radio quasar at that time by a factor of 10," said astrophysicist Eduardo Bañados, leader of the study to The Astrophysical Journal that collects the job. The observations of the aforementioned radio telescope showed that the quasar was divided into three different components, for which two possible interpretations have been exposed. The first is that the black hole is at one end, and the other two components are parts of a single jet. The second theory is that the black hole is in the middle, with a jet on each side. According to the optical telescopes, which show the quasar in visible light, the position of the black hole is aligned with one of the final components, which makes the first interpretation the most likely. This means that, by studying and analyzing the two parts of the jet, astrophysicists can measure how fast it is expanding. On the other hand, if the black hole turns out to be in the center, it would represent that the jets are much smaller, which would show a much younger object, or one that is embedded in dense material that is slowing down the jets. It will be necessary to conduct more investigations to determine which of the two scenarios is the real one. Meanwhile, P352-15 remains an object of great value to scientists. ##
The potential of this quasar
It is not as old as J1342 + 0928, a quasar of when the universe barely had 5% of its current age, but the light of quasars can be used to study the intergalactic medium. This is because the hydrogen that crosses its long journey to Earth changes the spectrum of light; recently, a quasar was used in this way to find the baryonic matter that was missing in the space between the galaxies. "We are seeing P352-15 as it was when the universe was less than 1 billion years old - this is almost the end of a period when the first stars and galaxies were re-ionizing the neutral hydrogen atoms that impregnated intergalactic space. This quasar and its great distance make it a unique tool to study the conditions and processes that prevailed in the first galaxies in the universe, "explains astrophysicist Chris Carilli of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Thus, the quasar, whose material moves at almost the speed of light, could help astronomers to better understand the time when the first stars of the universe formed and began to group. "The jet of this quasar could serve as an important calibration tool to help future projects penetrate the dark ages and perhaps reveal how the first galaxies were born," said Bañados. |

Specifically, up to **60%** of tourists suffer diarrhea of greater or lesser intensity. The so-called traveler's diarrhea is related to the consumption of food and drinks contaminated with pathogens that, although their danger is not serious, do adversely affect digestive health and alter the intestinal flora. Traveler's diarrhea may be caused by viruses, parasites and bacteria, the latter being the most frequent cause. Some of these bacteria are Escherichia coli, **Campylobacter jejuni and Cyclospora cayetanensis**. These bacteria live in the stool and intestine of humans and other warm-blooded animals. When the hygiene conditions of food and water are not optimal, consumer products can become contaminated with these bacteria. Although most of these will not cause a serious condition, it is possible that they **cause diarrhea**, vomiting, abdominal pain and even fever. ####
Six out of ten tourists suffer from the so-called traveler's diarrhea.
To prevent the intestinal flora from being disturbed by the presence of these bacteria, there is a natural component to which we can resort: xyloglucan, a molecule extracted from the tropical tamarind tree that forms a mucoprotective biobarrera in the intestine. This is the basis on which **Xilaplus**, from Laboratorios Ferrer, has been developed, which controls and reduces symptoms related to diarrheal episodes. In this way, we will prevent the digestive system, which itself has its own bacterial flora, from altering its natural function. ## Precautionary measures Although **we have effective components to treat traveler's diarrhea**, it is best to try not to contract it following basic prevention measures: eat in reliable restaurants, avoid street foods and beverages, consume only cooked foods that are still hot, fruits that can be peeled and drinks without ice served in sealed bottles, in addition to avoiding raw vegetables. On the other hand, the destination of the trip is the greatest risk factor related to this infection. **The Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, South and Central America, and the underdeveloped countries of the African continent, followed by Southern and Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Israel, the Caribbean and South Africa**, are the places with more risk of contracting some of the agents that cause these characteristic intestinal disorders. |

| body | ##
Spiders use electricity to fly
#####
They detect atmospheric electricity and use it to rise, thanks to long silk threads, although there is not the slightest breeze.

https://www.anipedia.net/imagenes/arana-avispa.jpg

Source

Although only 0.1% of spider species are dangerous to humans, most of them are afraid of them. Now, a team of scientists from the University of Bristol (England) has discovered a fascinating quality of small arachnids. And is that the aerodynamic capabilities of spiders have intrigued scientists for hundreds of years. Charles Darwin himself reflected on how hundreds of creatures managed to perch on the Beagle on a calm day at sea and then take off from the ship at high speeds on a windless day. "Darwin's observation, however, did not provide more evidence for support," the authors comment. Scientists have attributed this flying behavior of these wingless arthropods to "balloon flight," where spiders can travel thousands of kilometers releasing traces of silk that propel them up and out in the wind. However, when there is no wind, cloudy days or even rain, how do the spiders take off when they have such low levels of aerodynamic drag? Researchers have discovered that spiders are expert navigators of air electricity. The electric fields that they detect thanks to a few hairs in their legs, provide them elevation: they raise the abdomen, 'they put on tiptoe' and release a silk thread in order to let themselves be carried away by the atmospheric electricity, even without the slightest breeze. "When you think of organisms transported by the air, spiders do not usually come to mind," explained researchers Erica Morley and Daniel Robert of the University of Bristol, in the study published in the journal Current Biology. "However, these wingless arthropods have been found 4 kilometers in the sky, dispersing for hundreds of kilometers." They travel through the gradient of atmospheric potential, an electrical circuit between the Earth and the ionosphere, the part of the upper atmosphere of the Earth ionized by solar radiation. Thunderstorms act as a giant battery for this gradient of atmospheric potential, charging and maintaining electric fields in the atmosphere. In 2013, a different group of researchers presented a theory that electric fields could be at least part of the spider's expansion strategy, and Morley and Roberts were interested in seeing if spiders really responded to electric fields and their spheres. fluctuations. They caught spiders of the genus Erigone (present in America, Eurasia, Africa and Oceania), some spiders of a very small size and arranged them for several controlled experiments. In one of them they created a light breeze; in another they eliminated it, but they added an electric potential similar to that which exists in the atmosphere. In this way, turning on and off the artificial electric field they discovered that the spiders swelled when the field was on, and the electrostatic forces of the field alone were enough to drive their movement; It is the same force that lifts your hair if you rub a balloon over your head. When the researchers turned off the electric field, the spiders came down. In this way, insects can detect both the gradient of atmospheric potential and the electric fields surrounding the matter. This is due to sensory hairs (tricobothria) that move in response to the electric field, which researchers believe is what spiders use to detect the gradient of atmospheric potential. Although science has taught us a lot, this type of studies shows how much remains to be learned about the tricks that spiders have with their eight tiny legs. |

| title | Choosing a doctor can lengthen your life |
| body | ##
Choosing a doctor can lengthen your life
#####
Continuity in care is associated with greater patient satisfaction, improvements in health, greater effectiveness of medications and less use of the hospital.

https://sumedico.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/CheuqueoMedico.jpg

Source

The great advances **medicine has made since the 19th century** derive from research and better knowledge of the problems of physiopathology, its prevention and treatment. However, research and improvements focus on treating physical factors, while **the human aspects of medical care** have been forgotten. A new study has returned to this aspect of medicine the importance it deserves. A recent publication of the medical journal **'BMJ Open'** points out the relationship between the continuity of care and medical treatment and patient mortality, stating that the risk of mortality under any circumstance is reduced the longer the regular medical care. These conclusions would directly contradict the statements made by an editorial in the ***'New England Journal of Medicine'***, where it was stated that non-personal care should be **'the default option'** in medicine. The continuity of care, as defined by the team responsible for the work, is the repeated contact between a patient and his doctor. Starting from this point, the team led by D.J. Pereira Gray has compiled the information from several studies and previous scientific works to answer the question 'Are the highest levels of continuity in medical care, in any situation, with any group of patients, associated with a change in mortality? ' With a total of **726 studies and publications** in which medical care or mortality was treated, the team made a selection of 43 that should be reviewed for research. After discarding those in which continuity was not measured, in which the treatment was not done by a single doctor or group of doctors and in which mortality was not analyzed at any time; the research was reduced to 22 studies that fell within the desired parameters. The team proposed measures to counteract the risk of bias during the process and used the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, designed to ensure the quality of a non-randomized scientific study. ##
Conclusions of the research
Of the 22 results, **18 (81.8% of the total)** showed a clear direct relationship between the greater continuity of care and the lower mortality after these, indicating in 16 of them that the mortality from any cause was reduced. Three other studies showed no relationship between care and mortality, although the time scales in which they were developed were too short or the methods used insufficient to analyze the effects of the doctor-patient relationship. Finally, a single study showed contradictory results according to the type of continuity measures employed, which, despite being the only study that contradicts the others, is not conclusive. The research reveals that continuity in medical care can be great advantages for patients in the long term. The relationship between doctor and patient over time will generate greater involvement by both parties that will ensure compliance and control of the treatment that is being followed. In addition, this monitoring will increase patient satisfaction, and this will generate a positive attitude that will affect their health status. Although the great advances of **medicine come from the hands of technology**, human treatment remains a key piece and a matter of life and death. |
