      "body": "## The bad news...\n\n...is that much of what your parents and teachers told you about marijuana, despite being irresponsibly oversimplified, blown out of proportion, and taken out of context; is absolutely true, practically speaking.\n\nDespite recent good press for marijuana, the fact is that chronic abuse has some pretty serious negative health consequences, and even occasional use can be dangerous, especially for young people. This includes a significant reduction in gray matter in the cerebral cortex, along with increased neural connections in that region. While increased neural connections may sound like a positive thing, the researchers believe it's a defense mechanism. They also found less volume in the orbitofrontal cortex, which is involved in decision making and emotional response.\n\nMore alarming, the earlier the onset of use, the more this increased connectivity affected the user. They also noted that it began to take place early on, meaning that even light use will still lead to structural changes in the brain in young people. This goes along with a thirty year study on IQ, which concluded that marijuana smoking permanently lowered IQ, and more so in those who abused marijuana as teenagers. Moreover, this was a longitudinal study, meaning that it eliminates the possibility of lower IQ individuals simply being more likely to pick up pot smoking. On the contrary, plenty of high IQ people smoke pot, it seems.\n\nThe study concluded that teenagers who abused marijuana would see an average eight point reduction in IQ. Consider for a moment that an IQ of ninety points is considered average, whereas an IQ just ten points lower is barely above borderline mentally disabled. Thus, while eight points doesn't sound like that much, it's actually highly significant. Alternately, it could mean the difference between simply being above average and being a bonafide genius.\n\nOther studies on the relationship between marijuana and mental health found that the age of onset also had a lot to do with a person's risk of developing psychosis as a result of marijuana abuse. With all of this, the conclusion should be clear to any honest, rational person; that marijuana negatively affects the brain, especially in young people.\n\nBut wait!\n\n## The good news...\n\n...is that marijuana isn't \"real\" cannabis. That is, the strains of marijuana used recreationally do not occur naturally, and naturally occurring marijuana isn't capable of getting a person high. This is because of the ratio of CBD to THC found in different types of cannabis. THC, the component responsible for the psychoactive effects, is naturally very low in wild marijuana, as well as related domestic strains like hemp.\n\nAdditionally, CBD is quite high in these strains, which actually counteracts what little THC is present, completely neutralizing any chance of getting high. Alternately, cultivated marijuana has been genetically modified to have extremely high THC levels, along with extremely low CBD content, with seemingly disastrous results for human health. Even more surprising, the naturally occurring high CBD strains seem to be more medicinally useful. These high CBD strains have been shown to even treat anxiety, whereas high THC strains are actually a cause of anxiety. Additionally, the \"medical miracles\" you hear about all involve high CBD strains, including treating seizures in children.\n\nThis isn't to say that THC is bad, mind you. In fact, the positive results of CBD are fully realized only with the addition of some THC, which seems to work synergistically with CBD. There are also benefits of THC itself, such as the shrinkage of tumors, and these benefits are apparently not lessened by the presence of CBD. In other words, you don't have to get high to realize the full health benefits of marijuana.\n\nEarly studies on high CBD strains also indicate that there's no brain damage associated with them, with no reduction in gray matter or increased neural connections. The CBD appears to protect the brain from the THC, neutralizing any potentially negative effects of the THC itself.\n\n## A Caveat\n\nThis is not intended in any way as an attack on marijuana, or a criticism of the choices made by mature adults regarding their own health. Considering we live in a society that accepts recreational alcohol use as normal, we should really take a step back and put marijuana in context. If a mature adult chooses to use it recreationally, then it's hard to argue that it's anymore harmful than alcohol in that scenario.\n\nAdditionally, high THC marijuana-that is, marijuana capable of getting a person high-is very useful for treating symptoms associated with disease. And even a superficial analysis obviates that high THC cannabis, as harmful as it is, is far less harmful than the pharmaceutical alternatives that treat those same symptoms. For example, marijuana has been shown to be extremely effective for relieving pain, enabling patients to forgo opioids. Even in patients who can't go without the opioids completely, adding marijuana enables them to reduce their opioid intake, increasing their quality of life and decreasing their chances of developing a serious addiction.\n\nThis is all moot, however, as it's not our job as a society to dictate to seriously ill people what they can and can't have to make them feel better. Likewise, it's not our job to define serious illness. A person's health and course of treatment for disease is their own affair, and their's alone. Only they know how they feel, and if they're willing to accept the side effects then far be it from us to stop them.\n\nOnly a cruel and tyrannical society would withhold marijuana from the sick, especially when it comes to the terminally ill, who won't be around long enough to be affected. For them, long term side effects are about as meaningful as high cholesterol. And only a corrupt society would offer them ineffective pharmaceuticals in its place, most of which have nasty and immediate side effects that outweigh any benefits, only adding to their suffering in the name of profit.\n\nIn conclusion, while I wholeheartedly support universal legalization, it's extremely important that we are also honest with ourselves when it comes to recreational pot. The media at the moment would almost have us believe that getting high is a good thing! But, as they say, there's no free lunch. So while the occasional toke might not be that bad for adults, it's certainly not a sustainable lifestyle.",

Not only does this cut out the middleman's profit, it also cuts out many of his expenses, such as retail space and sales staff, as well as shipping. In the old days, a product would have to go from a manufacturer to a distributor, then from the distributor to the retailer, where the customer would finally get his hands on it.\n\nAfter all the expenses of moving through that network, a product that cost about twenty dollars to actually produce would end up costing the customer around one hundred dollars. In a manufacturer direct model, the customer could have had that same product, without sacrificing anything, for about fifty dollars or less.\n\nAnother innovation allowing for manufacturer direct sales is computerized inventory control and shipping methods, combined with platform like Amazon and Ebay, which give even small manufacturers the same exposure they would get by offering their products through large retailers like Walmart. It's now extremely easy for a manufacturer to set up their own point of sale website, or use a platform like Amazon, and ship products directly to customers. The automated systems allow the manufacturer to easily control inventory on any scale. This is slowed somewhat by international shipping rates and language barriers, but manufacturers abroad are catching on quickly. If you don't mind waiting a little for your package, you can find screaming good prices from Chinese suppliers on sites like Ebay, Amazon, and Alibaba.\n\nBut what about people who want to see things in person before they buy them? One of the biggest barriers to internet sales is the need to try on clothing. First of all, the cost of shipping will continue to fall with increased volume, allowing customers to regularly return products while still saving money, even after shipping costs are considered. A customer could order two or three sizes or models, keep the one that fits, and return the others. Computers will also offer more accurate sizing, making it less likely that the customer would order the wrong size in the first place. Apps that scan the customer's measurements will help them find clothes that fit. These apps will likely even be able to show you a rendering of what the clothes would look like on you, as well as help you shop for used clothes by comparing your measurements to the seller's.\n\nAnother innovation that will reduce the need to try things on is technology allowing for mass produced custom made goods. You will scan yourself with your smart phone, tablet, laptop, smart TV, etc. (any device with a camera), and an AI will come up with custom patterns. A robotic laser will then cut out the patterns, assisted by a program that will pool all of the orders and lay out the patterns to get maximum use from the bolt of material. The pieces will then be gathered together and taken to the sewers, who will sew them together without any difficulty. This means everything from your underwear to your suits will be custom made for you, and without much additional cost over traditional manufacturing. In fact, the perfect scalability associated with this type of manufacturing may even offset the cost completely.\n\nAnother consideration is that we will see a steady decline in cheaply made goods from underdeveloped countries like China. These countries are building a strong middle class, which will mean a modernization of their economies, including moving from manufacturing to services. What manufacturing does survive will be geared towards quality and innovation. The throw away nature of developed western nations, especially America, has always been unsustainable, as well as economically reckless. In the future, products will cost more and be of higher quality, meaning American consumers will put more thought into their purchases. This will also create a thriving market for used goods, as higher quality products are more likely to outlast their owner's need for them. Another consequence of gentrification is that manufacturing will move back into developed countries, reducing the need for international shipping in manufacturer direct business models.\n\nHowever, retail spaces where customers can get their hands on products will still exist, but with a radically different business model. These stores will be equipped with dozens of cameras that will record customer behavior, which will provide invaluable market research. Manufacturers will pay a fee to the store to have their products stocked there, which will allow the retailer to compete with manufacture direct prices, as they will make their money not from the markup on products, but from the sale of the market research data. It will let manufacturers know in real time how their products are doing. They will also be able to study the potential effect of changes made to a product, such as new colors and sizes. In this way, retail will morph into market research laboratories. The ideal platform for this is shopping malls, as they will allow behavior to be analyzed on macro and micro levels, as well as bring customers to non-retail businesses like restaurants.\n\nAnother area where retail will survive is grocery stores, but the model will be much different. Instead of having a retail floor, all the stock will be kept in the back and not be pulled until a customer orders it. Basically, the customer will submit their shopping list online, and products will be pulled directly to fill that customer's order. This means products go directly from stockroom to grocery sack, minimizing the manual labor required to get the product into the customer's hands. The products will also be rung up as they're pulled from stock, eliminating the registers and greatly simplifying the entire inventory control process. After purchasing the products online, customers will simply pull up to a loading dock and collect their bags, or even have them delivered to their house via autonomous vehicle. Depending on the customer's location and routines, it may prove more cost effective to have their groceries delivered than to pick them up in person.\n\nHow long all of this will take to come to fruition is uncertain, but what we can say for sure is that the retail landscape will see dramatic change in the coming years.",

And, well, I just couldn't resist!\n\nIf you're not familiar with the Voynich Manuscript, it's a mysterious medieval codex that has been carbon dated to the early fifteenth century. It's named after Wilfrid Voynich, a book dealer who purchased it in the 1900's and made its existence widely known, though it can be traced back to the early seventeenth century with reasonable certainty.\n\nBut here's the exciting part: It's encrypted, and until now the cipher has proven unbreakable, despite many highly accomplished cryptography experts and, recently, computers who have all taken a crack at it with no success. This led many to conclude that it was just gibberish-a hoax-being of the opinion that a medieval cryptographer could never outfox modern computers. But they were apparently wrong!\n\nAs it turns out, the manuscript is in Hebrew, which shouldn't come as any surprise. You have probably heard of the Bible code, but what you may not know is that Jewish scholars have been searching for codes in the Torah as long as anyone can remember. As a result, Jewish scholars made natural cryptographers.\n\nThe existence of an apparently real cipher, as well as the carbon dating and history of ownership, make it unlikely that the book is a hoax. Why would someone go to that much trouble to create a real, high quality cipher if they were just looking to make a quick buck? Not to mention the fact that the book absolutely dates back to a time when a forger couldn't have anticipated scientific advances like carbon dating. The vellum and ink has been analyzed on many levels, and if it's a forgery then it's author had to have been psychic-or a time traveler...\n\nThe codex is equally bizarre in its illustrations, which show many nonexistent plants and strange creatures, as well as astrological charts. Some think it's a medieval herbal, while others think it deals with alchemy. The bizarre nature of the illustrations have convinced many that it's a hoax, written with the intent of convincing a medieval buyer that the book contains secret knowledge of exotic plants and healing arts from a far away land. Again, though, why would the hoaxer go to the trouble of creating a real cipher.\n\nUnfortunately, they still don't know what it actually says. But the computer indicates it's written in Hebrew, with a very high degree of certainty. They have also been able to identify many coherent Hebrew words, and the opening sentence may say something along the lines of, “She made recommendations to the priest, man of the house and me and people.”\n\nCurrently, a team of Hebrew experts is applying the algorithm to the rest of the text. Hopefully that will crack the case, and we'll finally know what the darned thing is all about. Now if they could just figure out what's buried on Oak Island...",
