      "body": "What have the railways ever done for us? It’s a question that has almost certainly never been asked in Darlington and Shildon. \n\nShildon can justifiably claim to be the world’s first railway town as on 27th September 1825 a journey was made from Shildon to Stockton via Darlington. The steam engine Locomotion pulled over thirty wagons containing passengers and coal, sometimes together in the same waggon, for about 5 hours over a distance of around 25 miles. There were some stoppages as aa wagon broke a wheel and had to be detached from the train and the locomotive needed repairs soon afterwards for about 35 minutes. A man fell off one of the wagons and was run over by the next wagon in line. He broke his foot. Coal from some of the wagons was distributed to the poorer people of Darlington at a scheduled stop  \n![IMG_0319.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVL8r3YnVrHBVTyzDRnpqb7eRLcxnSMD92zpAGuuovoZP/IMG_0319.JPG)\nThe Locomotion Museum at Shildon is part of the National Railway Museum at York and the Science Museum in London. It’s clearly visible on the left-hand side of the tracks just before Shildon if you’re travelling to Bishop Auckland from Darlington. The list of stations for this service includes Railway Museum, so there’s little excuse to miss the gigantic aircraft-hangar sized building housing the locomotives, carriages, and waggons of Locomotion. This word is emblazoned under the crescent-shaped roof of the entrance. \n\nOutside the building are various engines and carriages displayed on sidings as though they’re not important enough to be inside. Entrance to Locomotion is free although there is a suggested donation, which I would encourage visitors to pay as it keeps these museums open throughout the year. \n\nInside it’s difficult to know where to start as there are locomotives, carriages, tenders, milk waggons, hoppers, advanced passenger trains, and models of old steam engines lined up on parallel lines. Particularly striking is the positioning of an Advanced Passenger Train (APT) on a track next to an early locomotive, a model of Locomotion, the first locomotive in the world to pull a passenger train. There’s also a beautiful yellow and green full-size model of the Sans Pareil locomotive. The original built by Timothy Hackworth took part in the Rainhill Trials in 1829.\n![IMG_0317.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQma88VsHZ8vp1nPyeLBeVf2sPP7we1uFYcG9RQkbZWMEDY/IMG_0317.JPG)  \nOther highlights of the Locomotion collection include a massive, powder-blue English Electric diesel, a LNER snow-plough, and a Siphon G Waggon first used before WWII for distributing milk. It has the immortal words “Shunt with Care” stencilled on the side. During the war, this waggon served as an ambulance and then served as a parcel carrier and a generator vehicle afterwards. Nearby are carriages in LMS livery, sections of the Royal Train, a hopper for carrying grain, and a national benzole oil tank waggon.   \n![IMG_0282.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTGMZzEix3YKKi1B6WYXDLPFMMjttZ6QQHqwwsnvGcP6C/IMG_0282.JPG)\nThe shop sells railway memorabilia, T-shirts, and models. The cafe has filling food and drinks, plus some of the seating is from an actual train, I think Eurostar which is quite an imaginative idea.  \n\nIn Darlington, the Head of Steam Museum is altogether a more intimate place, but is not an easy place to find, especially if you’re travelling by train like me. I arrived from Newcastle and assumed the main station of the first railway company in the world to use steam trains to haul passengers to their destinations would be signposted, but it wasn’t. I headed out of the station to the taxi rank and still there were no signs. I decided to head into the centre of town and see what I could find. As I was admiring St Cuthbert’s church I spotted a road sign to the Head of Steam museum and headed in that general direction, past the lovely clock tower and the underpass with its happy buskers. Head of Steam is probably 20 minutes away on foot from the modern day station, but it is worth seeking out. \n\nThe Head of Steam Museum is housed in the former North Road station. There is an entrance fee for the museum. This place not only provides a fascinating insight into the history of the railways, but also an indication of the history of Victorian times, showing that rail travel was equally popular with all levels of society. In its heyday in the 19th Century around 80 people worked at the station in various service capacities. There were 7 grades of employee ranging from trainee through to manager. In the 1860s the station had its own police superintendent to maintain order and civility. First-class passengers had a separate entrance to the station and their own refreshment facilities and lavatory. There was a separate waiting room for ladies.  \n\nThe main attraction at the Head of Steam is the locomotive Locomotion. This is not a model or a replica, it is the original locomotive although certain parts have been replaced over the years, such as the boiler, the original of which exploded in 1828 after the driver weighted down the safety valve to increase pressure - never a good idea. The driver paid the ultimate price for this act of silliness. This loco was built at the George Stephenson works in Newcastle in 1825 and saw service until 1850 when it was reduced to pumping duties at a local colliery. In 1857, Locomotion was retired and given to the Stockton and Darlington railway being placed on display at various stations in the area until it reached its current location in 1975. If you look closely, you will see there were no brakes on the locomotive, the idea being that shutting off the steam would slow down this beast of 11 tons 5 hundredweight. \n\nLocomotion is the first in a line of four local locomotives on display allowing the visitor to appreciate how quickly the design and layout of steam trains changed in a short time. The  locomotive next to Locomotion, named Derwent, was built in 1845 and has smooth, sleek lines based on a design of Timothy Hackworth, the man who built Sans Pareil for the Rainhill Trials of 1829. Derwent’s cylinders are almost horizontal and this locomotive has two tenders, one for water and one for coal, enabling heat from the fire to pass through the boiler twice. Derwent worked on the railways until 1869. The next locomotive, 1463 - Tennant class, was built in 1885 in Darlington, and pulled passenger trains between York and Newcastle before being retired for preservation in 1927. Most of the working parts on this locomotive are either hidden out of sight in or are operated from the driver’s cab. The final locomotive is a powerful heavy goods locomotive, 901 - Q7 class, which served from 1919 to 1962 hauling iron ore from the Tyne Dock at South Shields to the steel plant at Consett. \n\nOther items worthy of mention include some huge wooden dog’s heads from the Tubwell Row collection in Darlington, a wall of train numbers, and a collection of railway posters encouraging holidaymakers to use the train to see the sights, the latter reminding me that I had to return to the main station to catch the train to Durham.",

The Queen Elizabeth II Metro Bridge is behind you. Two other bridges are further upstream - The King Edward VII bridge and the Redheugh Bridge. Facing downstream, The Sage Centre is on the right-hand side in Gateshead with the Baltic Flour Mill in the distance on the same side of the Tyne. The Quayside to the left-hand side is on the northern side of the Tyne in Newcastle and the opposite side of the river is Gateshead. The High Level bridge carries both rail and road traffic.\n![IMG_0598.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZoHDRrZcVgRF45zU8J3cUZUkgT6hCnxNNAHxJDiKKBHK/IMG_0598.JPG)\nTyne Bridge is the main symbol of Newcastle, a through arch bridge started in August 1925 and completed in February 1928, home to around 700 pairs of kittiwakes, at least one of which will appear in all your photos. The bridge is 85 feet above the Tyne and the single arch span is 531 feet, though the whole length of the entire bridge is 1,276 feet. The bridge was officially opened by King George V and he and his queen, Mary of Teck, were the first people to be driven across it in their carriage. 20,000 children were given the day off school to witness this spectacle. Today the bridge carries the A167 across the Tyne.\n![IMG_0579.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXDoBSp8V91a4vgZf65dN6f9U8HSgBSd1yaPgVCgjPk5Q/IMG_0579.JPG)\nThe Sage Centre in Gateshead, or Sage Gateshead, designed by Norman Foster and Partners, formed the heart of an ambitious regeneration project of Gateshead’s river frontage and lies alongside the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Tyne Bridge, whose arch is echoed in the Sage’s roof. In different lights, it can look like a chrysalis, a billowing steel cloud, or a grounded, deflating airship. It was completed in 2004 and is home to The Northern Sinfonia and a base for Folkworks, which promotes folk, jazz and blues performances. There are three auditoria and accommodation for the Regional Music School. The largest of the main performance spaces is an acoustically state-of-the-art concert hall seating up to 1,650 people. The second hall can be arranged to suit folk, jazz and chamber performances and seats up to 400. Sage Gateshead is constructed from steel, aluminium, and glass and the surface reflections of the sky endlessly change as you walk by on your way to the Baltic Centre. But first make sure you have a good look at the sweeping majesty of The Millennium Bridge.\n![IMG_0543.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf6jqjfZo3V1PphhiNxXoEQ9s4GHVAXV16h2JpLsn4VPT/IMG_0543.JPG)\nThis bridge was lifted into place as a complete structure by one of the world's largest floating cranes on 20 November 2000. It was opened to the public on 17 September 2001 and dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on 7 May 2002. The bridge cost £22m to build. Six 18-inch  diameter hydraulic rams (three on each side) rotate the bridge back on bearings to allow ships and boats up to 82 feet in height to pass underneath. The bridge takes as little as 4.5 minutes to rotate through the full 40° from closed to open depending on the speed of the prevaling wind. The bridge’s appearance during this manoeuvre has led to it being nicknamed the \"Winking Eye Bridge\" or “Blinking Eye Bridge”. The design is so energy efficient it costs only around £4 each time it opens. The soaring arch and supporting guy ropes almost make it look like a distorted, white harp from certain angles. \n![IMG_0558.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVyrcBDCEz8Gn7CAHf8UcHf1JhctGkv8tXiPBN2u2FJ9s/IMG_0558.JPG)\nThe Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (also known as The Baltic, or Baltic Mill) is a centre for contemporary art on the Gateshead side of the Tyne. The Baltic Flour Mill was built by Rank Hovis to a late-1930s design and completed in 1950. An animal feed mill was added in 1957. The mill was closed in 1981, but along with a number of mills located along the banks of the Tyne, it remained a prominent local landmark. A large mill owned by the CWS and located just upstream of Dunston Staithes is now occupied by a residential development, so you see how easy it is to lose history. Thankfully, this fate didn’t befall the Baltic Mill. Dominic Williams of Ellis Williams Architects won an architectural design competition in the mid-1990s to convert the Baltic Mill into a centre for art. After ten years in the planning and a capital investment of £50m, including £33.4m from the Lottery Fund, the Baltic Mill re-opened, this time as an art centre, at midnight on Saturday 13 July 2002. There are no permanent exhibitions at The Baltic, no permanent collection of Modern Art, so everything is changing. \n\nAnother interesting cultural experience is a little way from The Quayside in Newcastle near the train station on Westgate. The Literary and Philosophical Society was founded in 1793 as a \"conversation club\" by the Reverend William Turner and others – more than fifty years before the London Library – the annual subscription was originally one guinea. The library contained works in French, Spanish, German and Latin and its members debated a wide range of issues, but religion and politics were prohibited. Women were first admitted to the library in 1804. During the 19th Century the Lit & Phil hosted people such as engineer and inventor George Stephenson who showed his miner's lamp here. In 1879, when Joseph Swan demonstrated his electric light bulbs, the Lit and Phil building became the first public building to be so illuminated. The Society received in 1800 the country's first specimens of the wombat and the duck-billed platypus from John Hunter, Governor of New South Wales. Between 1822 and 1825, a new building was created for the Society on Westgate Road where visitors can still visit the library today. People come to study, read newspapers and magazines (remember them?), and also chat around one of the communal tables. People with laptops are catered to and there’s even a long rectangular table at one end where people can study and type away in comfort. There’s tea available. The entrance way is particularly impressive. \n\nPast Presidents of the Lit & Phil include Robert Stephenson the Victorian railway engineer, Charles Parsons inventor of the steam turbine, and GM Trevelyan the writer and historian. Famous members have included Thomas Bewick, James Audubon, Joseph Swan, Neil Tennant, though this is the American philosopher of that name rather than the member of The Pet Shop Boys who was born in nearby North Shields, and J Thomas Looney the man who first proposed the Oxfordian theory regarding the authorship of Shakespeare’s plays namely that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (1550–1604) wrote them all. \n\nAs I hope you know the term Geordie refers to someone born in the Newcastle area, and it’s the local variant of Georgie or George, but it’s derivation is unclear or at least there are two competing ideas. The first is that it started because of Newcastle’s support for either George I in the first Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 or for George II in the second Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Alternatively, it might have started because of the local miner’s preference for the miner’s lamp produced by George Stephenson as opposed to the safety lamp produced by Sir Humphrey Davy.",
