| body | Agreed! I sit back and am shocked by how people think merely creating laws will somehow make everyone safer, if that worked in the least bit I'd be all aboard! Sadly I know if some day someone decides to break into my home and try to hurt me or my family, that person IS a criminal, at which point I KNOW they are not obeying laws and thus I must protect myself. I just hope that my blog can open the door to reasoning with each other, all too often I feel we just think the other side is "stupid" and we never actually have an intellectual conversation and get anything handled. We walk in with walls up and leave hating the other side. We all want things to change but we're all set in our ways. Now don't think for a second I'm willing to give my guns up, but I'm more than willing to discuss ways we can make places safer in the real world. Hopefully someday this happens on a larger scale. |

| body | The one important thing to remember is that these tragic events are used by cynical propagandists for their own ends. Anyone claiming that we can be safe is lying to us. We can certainly FEEL safe - that's relatively easy- but we won't BE safe. After the untold billions we've spent on airport security, people feel safe, but whenever someone actually tests the system they find that it's easy to bypass the security measures. We aren't safe. It's also crystal clear that the very idea of safety through government failed in Florida. They had a swell govt-funded program with salaries and benefits for everyone - armed officer(s) on the school campus. The explicit purpose, presumably, was to protect the students. They collected the salaries and benefits but they didn't protect the students. It's a tragedy that dozens of school kids were injured and murdered all in one event, in a spectacular fashion in that school in Florida. It's also a tragedy that dozens of school kids are murdered every week in our cities. Granted, they aren't as easy for the media to capture and package, and they aren't nice suburban kids, so it's harder to identify and sympathize with that cruelty and horror. The world is what it is, and no amount of media hysteria and political maneuvering is going to change it. I agree with you completely - it's sad and it's frightening, and we have to face it with courage and charity. Rules don't change things like this. |

| title | GUN CONTROL: WE’RE NOT THAT FAR APART |
| body | **AS I WATCH THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF TODAY’S NATIONAL SCHOOL WALKOUT I CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER, DOES ANYONE REALIZE WE’RE ALL FIGHTING FOR THE SAME THING IN VERY DIFFERENT WAYS?** Children across the country walked out of their classes at for 17 minutes at 10 am today, some urged by parents, teachers and entire school districts. Both as a moment of silence for those lost in the recent shooting and as a call for gun control. I can’t blame children for being upset, **who wants to worry about being slaughtered in school**? How many felt pressured into it? Whether for or against gun control we’ve allowed ourselves to become lost in the media and our emotions. We find ourselves fighting on social media, both sides often **filled with rage** and never willing to back down, yet we seemingly never realize at the end of the day **we’re all fighting for the same thing**: safety. Safety for our families, children, and community as a whole. We get bogged down trying to argue for or against guns and don’t stop to realize the people we’re arguing against just want to feel safe in a different way than ourselves. Unfortunately, that “safety” we call for often becomes nothing more than a veil we hide behind, telling ourselves that if we control the devices used by evil people, we’ll somehow stop evil. Every sane American wants our schools to be safe. **None of us want to be murdered nor see children slaughtered**. We must first stop coming from a place of emotion, it clouds our judgment and prevents us from making rational decisions. We must use logic and stop pointing the finger at one another. Those that call for gun control, as well as those who support their second amendment rights publicly, are likely NOT the people who will be responsible for the next mass murder. Most fighting for gun control **don’t want to strip away your freedoms**; they simply believe taking guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally unstable will protect them, **and they’re right**. If we could snap our fingers and make that happen, they **would** be safer. Those that fight against gun control **don’t want to murder you and your family**; they want guns to **protect their family**. We walk amongst millions of Americans on a daily basis that own firearms, there’s a good chance **you’ve walked by a gun owner every single day of your life** yet none of them have shot you. Those people don’t have ill intentions; they are the majority. We can’t focus on the actions of the minority and say that because they do something terrible everyone else will, **that just doesn’t make sense**. Understand that some men rape helpless women, that does not mean all men are rapists. Quite the contrary, most would happily stand up for a rape victim. Every person on this planet makes choices; **those choices are what define who we are**, we can choose to be good, or we choose to be evil. We need to understand evil will never be eliminated **no matter what laws we create**, guns we ban, or guards we place in schools. Take a moment to swallow a very tough pill and accept the fact that **people will continue to kill** others no matter what we do. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time; history is fraught with examples of slaughter, slavery, and torture. Far before the invention of firearms people have been murdered with arrows, canons, bombs, swords, knives, stones, hands and more. Not everyone is dealt a fair hand; I’m not advocating for the actions of murderers, I stand firmly against them. I’m merely pointing out **each of us has an effect on others**, and I’d be willing to bet if everyone magically treated one another with decency and respected the number of murders would decrease. That may seem like a fantasy land, but we can ALL do our part. We’ll never be able to account for the number of crimes not committed, **that doesn’t mean crimes aren’t avoided**. Think back on the events that have taken place in your own life, at 32 years old, and I can **vividly** remember the day 9/11 happened. Men used box cutters to hijack and kill thousands of innocent Americans. We as a people united as Americans and stood up against terrorism, not the tools the cowards used to kill us. In the years since I’ve seen bombs, arson, chemicals, knives, guns, cars, trucks, anthrax and much more used to kill. These horror stories surround us on a daily basis; it’s a tragedy yet we never blame the tool used to commit the crime unless that tool is a gun. I’ve often wondered why that is; it seems it is the one thing romanticized by the media. I’m not saying you shouldn’t take your stand against something you’re against, **merely that we remain consistent across the board**. When people are murdered by a [rented Home Depot truck](https://www.cnn.com/2017/10/31/us/new-york-shots-fired/index.html) we’re not up in arms against trucks, when a [student brought a bomb to school](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/teen-drawn-isis-brought-homemade-bomb-utah-school-police-say-n854351) last week nobody called for “bomb control”. For some reason we remain logical in those situations and realize those are evil people breaking laws attempting to kill people and **we blame them** for the crime as we should. We don’t need more laws; we need fewer criminals. We need our current laws enforced; we need our governmental agencies to stop making mistakes allowing our existing laws to be circumvented. According to the New York Times and many other sources the last two mass murders have been perpetrated by individuals the government **knew should not be in possession of guns** (w[Texas Church Massacre](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/06/us/texas-shooting-church.html), [Florida School Shooting](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/23/us/fbi-tip-nikolas-cruz.html)) yet nothing was done. **Let’s open a dialogue between people**, let’s think things through. Let’s not make laws with no merit, never forget the criminals we seek to protect ourselves from do not obey the laws in which we endeavor to create. Murder always has and will always remain illegal, yet our prisons are full of murderers. We’ve had a “war on drugs” since 1971, yet drugs are prevalent. This comes back to choices, we choose our actions and need to accept responsibility for them. **We raise our children and the values we instill in them often shape the person they become**. It doesn’t seem long ago that I was in high school yet things were different, we weren’t submerged in social media, staring at phones or ingesting Tide Pods. Sure, there were plenty of problems but as time goes on people are losing touch with reality more and more. **Our phones and social platforms have become our lives**, and we’re losing our connection with other human beings. Get outside, take your children for a walk, donate your time, help someone in need, do a good deed. You have the power to positively influence someone’s life, the power to save someone’s life and ultimately the power to take someone’s life. **Choose to be a better person** in whatever respect that may be, we as a people do have the power to help one another, sadly we often don’t. Smile at a stranger, offer assistance, you never know the **profound impact** you may have on someone’s life by merely acknowledging their existence. Teach your children right and wrong with conviction, teach them to accept others and to be kind. Talk to them, listen to them, understand their issues, don’t turn a blind eye. Show your children the love and respect they deserve, so they learn to do the same for others. **We’re all in this together**. Let’s work together to find common ground, there are things we can do to stop these issues, but we must first come together as Americans and realize we all just want to feel safe. **We’re not that far apart**. |

I am absolutely confident you have a case for False Imprisonment. Because your girlfriend was ARRESTED (not Detained, which are often confused) on fraudulent grounds due to negligence. I suggest you contact an attorney in the area, and request a free consultation. Because of your previous experience, may I suggest looking into a contingency attorney. It may be appropriate for your needs based on the information above. I am so sorry about Brittany's terrible experience and I am happy it is now in the rear view mirror! |

| title | GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT |
| body | 2:40 pm Monday, January 24th, 2018 I received a call from my girlfriend Brittany White, however, it wasn’t her on the other end of the phone. It was a trooper with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) informing me that she had been placed under arrest and I had 10 minutes to take possession of her car, or it would be impounded. I was in disbelief, if you know Brittany you struggle to imagine what she could have possibly done to be arrested, she’s a hard-working young woman with two jobs and is attending college for her second degree. The trooper would not tell me the cause of the arrest, only that she could call me from jail. I ran out the door, jumped in the truck and rushed across town. She had been pulled over on the Northbound Mill street onramp of I-580, I parked where the troopers instructed me, and get out. The female officer asks if I am Emory Peterson and asks for my driver’s license to which I oblige. She instructs me to wait in Brittany’s car and walks back to her cruiser while her male partner keeps an eye on Brittany who’s handcuffed in the back of the car. Again, they refuse to tell me anything, nor allow me to talk to her, at this point, I am completely baffled. Eventually, she returns telling me I’m ready to go, and Brittany would call me from the jail. I then drive her car to the closest parking lot at the Grand Sierra Resort, run back up to my truck and drive home, completely lost. Over the next 2 hours my mind races, what she could have possibly done to end up in this situation? She had just recently purchased the car she was driving, maybe there was a mix up at the DMV, or the prior owner had left something illegal in the car? She had been sick for a week; maybe she had accidentally taken too much DayQuil and been considered under the influence? Nothing adds up and I just wait, staring at the phone until it finally rings. I immediately hear the pain and fear in her voice; she’s crying profusely and pleading for help. She tells me she was pulled over for a minor traffic violation and arrested on a felony drug warrant out of Nye County. She doesn’t even know where Nye County is, she has no idea what they are talking about and has been treated like a criminal the entire time. She’s repeatedly explained she knows nothing about it; they refuse to listen and act like she’s a drug smuggler finally brought to justice. Each time they ask her more details she becomes even more confused, not understanding the charges, she quite literally is in pure shock and disbelief. She tells me she feels like it’s a bad dream, she’s shaking and cold in a jail-issued t-shirt, they took her sweatshirt and she doesn’t understand because other inmates have theirs. The guards become more and more upset with her, some of which start saying rather nasty things to her. She’s told she has a $5,000 bail and doesn’t know what to do, who to call and has told them over and over it must be a mistake while pleading with them to please believe her. I tell her I’ll be there in 15 minutes and will do whatever it takes to get her out of there. Having no prior experience bailing someone from jail I called a bail bond company, I’m told the cost is 15% of the bail ($750 in our case), and that is the fee by law. The money would not be returned regardless of the outcome of the case. Fortunately, through hard work and saving, we have the liquidity to pay the bail in cash which means we’ll theoretically receive it all back once things are settled. I arrive at the Washoe County Sheriff’s office minutes later with $5,000 cash in hand. I speak to the cashier and do my best to explain what I’ve heard and how ridiculous it all sounds. Neither Brittany nor myself even knew where Nye county was, and surely we’d have known about any felony warrants for her arrest? I explained to them I fully understood that nearly everyone claims to be innocent and must have story after story. I begged them to listen to me, have someone take another look, please don’t assume she’s guilty. I try to reason with them and explain that in 2018 we surely must be able to have the issuing county e-mail a photo or fingerprints over and it’ll become immediately evident that she’s either a ‘drug lord’ or someone has made a major mistake. They make a few calls to their superiors I’m told it’s an ‘original charge’, no one has been arrested for it, so they don’t have a photo or fingerprints, but she matches all of the ‘descriptors.’ I ask what that means, and I’m told its name, birthdate, social security number, address, phone number and more. They’re positive this warrant is for her, there is no mistake. I tell them I’m here to post bail for her regardless, and ask for a supervisor or someone with more information. I need answers, and if I need to have an attorney present I’d be happy to have one there in minutes. Eventually, a supervisor does indeed come up and is a rather pleasant man. He has a print out of the original warrant from Nye county and explains the charges to me, “The warrant was originally filed June 26, 2011, for NRS 453.401, a category C felony for conspiracy to steal prescription medications in Pahrump, NV”. I ask them to check and be sure it wasn’t another person with the same name; as a quick Google search had proven there was another Brittany White in that area. He tells me everything matches and there is little he can do. Brittany was born in 1984, lived in Las Vegas from 1987 until 2005 and has since been a Reno resident. I tell him she’s never been to Pahrump, and start asking logical questions. How has she apparently been a fugitive from justice for six and a half years? Passing background checks for work with children, attending college, always having her current address on her driver’s license and having received a ticket for talking on her cell phone while driving just two years ago yet not one time being informed, nor arrested for these supposed felony charges? I continue to ask how in the world nobody has sent her a letter, called or even shown up to her residence or place of work to arrest her for said charges. It sounds unbelievable and they need to start taking a deeper look because I’m near 100% certainty she’s falsely imprisoned. My quick research uncovered Nye County has been involved in corruption, embezzlement, sex tapes, murdering dogs, FBI investigations and more, countless mistakes have been made, and they’ve all but lost their credibility as a policing agency. He says he is well aware, they’ve had issues before and agrees to attempt to secure more information from them. He even goes so far as to say the bail set by Nye County is absurd for the charges. He heads back to his office, and I proceed to pay the $5,000 bail, but feel like I’m almost playing into a trap. They scrutinize every bill and I wonder if the assumption made is that the drug dealing boyfriend arrived with large amounts of cash just after her arrest and is par for the course. She calls me every 45 minutes and gives me updates while crying, still scared beyond means, her charge carries mandatory minimum sentencing of 1 year in prison in the state of Nevada. She is absolutely terrified for her freedom, her life, and her career. Her character is being destroyed, she recognizes many of the guards from her serving job and feels they will forever judge her. Her arrest led to her “no-call, no-showing” to pick up a foster child, which may terminate her employment, especially when relating to a felony drug charge. Any logical company would immediately cut ties regardless of the outcome for fear of backlash, employing a possible felon around at-risk children and teens. I tell her I’m doing everything I can to get her out of there as soon as possible, I will not rest until she’s free, and I love her dearly. She asked me to call her work and try to explain the situation to them, although she expected it to end her career. Her supervisor was far more accepting of the situation than I could have ever expected, she believed in Brittany, thank god. It’s now after 7 pm, and I’m told it would be 4-6 hours until she is released, I ask that they do what they can to speed things up. She had repeatedly told me she was freezing and that no one cared, and they were beginning to treat her worse and worse as time went on seemingly due to her lack of admitting she was guilty. One female member of the Sheriff’s office commented that “she was surprised she had figured out how to stay out of jail this long.” You can imagine my internal outrage at this point. If this could happen to her, it could happen to anyone, and the consequences are life-changing, to say the least. I immediately decided I would cancel all of my upcoming appointments and focus on documenting this incident from start to finish; I would show the world (or whoever was willing to listen) that these things do happen to real people. Imagine how differently this could have gone, if it had happened to me or many others the initial stop could have been not only life changing, but life ending. I legally carry a concealed weapon on a daily basis, had I been stopped for felony drug charges I would have been removed from the car at gunpoint, one slight mistake in judgment by the arresting officers or accidental move on my part could have proved fatal. They wouldn’t be able to “un-shoot” me later if it was determined to be a misunderstanding. According to CBS News, “A full 57% of Americans don’t have enough cash to cover a $500 unexpected expense”. Think about that for a second, not only could this end in a fatal shooting or even being roughed up by police (I’d like to point out her arrest experience was professional, and by the book, I tip my hat to the arresting officers of the NHP). More than half of our country wouldn’t have nearly enough money on hand to even pay the required 15% of her bail money to get her out of jail which is just the FEE; you never get that money back. If 57% can’t afford a $500 bill, what percentage can afford a $750 bill? What percentage of those under the age of 35 like ourselves can? Imagine having to tell a family member: “I love you, and I believe you, but there is nothing I can do to get you out of jail, we don’t have enough money, you’re going to have to stay in there until your court date.” I want that to sink in, that is absolutely the reality for the vast majority of Americans. This equates to “guilty until proven innocent” when you don’t have the financial ability to fight a false charge. Again, I am so thankful we are fortunate enough to cover the entire $5,000 without adversely affecting our lives. We are not rich, we merely live within our means and take saving seriously. Had we not been able to pay the bail or come up with the $750 the most likely scenario would have been her being held up to 72 hours for an arraignment. Without any further evidence, she could have then been extradited to Nye County to stand trial on February 5th, 2018. Imagine being stuck in jail for 14 days and transferred six and a half hours away to a city you’ve never been to in shackles. Outrageous. Around 9 pm I headed back up to the jail with full camera and lighting gear in hand, I knew nobody would appreciate me showing up looking like a reporter pointing a camera in their face, but for me, it was the principle of the situation. I knew she had been falsely imprisoned, her reputation, career, and freedom were on the line, and I was going to document it in its entirety. She was finally released just before 10 pm, roughly 8 hours after being pulled over and 6 hours in jail. I was able to embrace her while she cried, shaking and terrified, I captured those moments on video. We were promptly told she needed to leave the property or she would be re-arrested (interesting way to approach releasing someone from jail). We proceeded up to the edge of the property, set up the lights and camera and I immediately interviewed her to document what she had just been through. You can imagine how hard it was to listen to, but it needed to happen for the sake of any other falsely accused victim in the future. We headed home; she decided she was too terrified to pick up her car that night, she didn’t want to be pulled over and somehow in this sick dream be taken back into custody. She hadn’t had anything to eat since breakfast, she was still sick and had been too afraid to ask for any cold/flu medication while in jail because we both thought it might be used against her in court as some sort of evidence that she indeed was somehow caught up in drugs. She had been starving but, hadn’t eaten the “yellow colored bread and cheese sandwiches” they left out. She’d never seen bread look so bad. We got her some dinner and a much-deserved glass of wine to settle her nerves and off to bed. TUESDAY MORNING I woke up early with one goal, I needed the best lawyer in town regardless of cost and to meet with him/her immediately. She had work and had already missed two shifts. With what we could only assume would be a long drawn out legal battle for her freedom we needed to meet someone quickly. Neither of us has a criminal defense attorney, as we’re not criminals, so I called and spoke with the front desk of a few prominent local attorneys. None of which service Nye county and I quickly understood why. At $200-$500 per hour imagine the legal costs associated with such a trial. You want quality representation but quickly can’t afford travel costs alone. One legal office expected the legal bill to become north of $30,000. Remember most of America can’t afford bail themselves out of jail, let alone begin to defend their freedom. I received a call back from Robert Fahrendorf, a highly recommended local criminal defense attorney and he graciously listened to me explain the situation to him. We spoke at length, and he told me that from a financial standpoint it made the most sense to hire an attorney in Nye county. There was, of course, the option of a court-appointed public defender. But when you’re talking about the freedom of a family member being in jeopardy in conjunction with a small county with a well-known history of corruption, do you honestly want to take the risk of ending up with lackluster representation or the remote possibility of collusion? I had to seriously question how far the Nye County prosecution may be willing to go to not admit a mistake had been made, was there a chance that a local defense attorney or public defender would ultimately be involved in ensuring there was a conviction? I want to make it clear that this is by no means an accusation of anything of the sort, merely something that crosses your mind when thrust into such a life-changing event. Do you trust your loved one’s freedom to an attorney you’ve never met in a city neither of you has ever been to over a charge that carries mandatory prison sentencing? Personally, that was not a decision I was willing to make. I felt the need to take matters into my own hands. I’ve always been a logical, well-thought and well-spoken individual and I knew I could figure this out. This of course came with risk, as I’ve never studied law in any capacity and my highest level of formal education is a G.E.D., I tested out of high school to pursue my businesses at 16. It did, however, come with major advantages starting with my hourly rate. At $0/hr Brittany could certainly afford my services, and I’d be able to document the entire process with nothing happening behind closed doors. I would fight harder than anyone to ensure she remained free; I had something more to lose than just a case, my partner. I set out to gather as much information as I could, I filled out paperwork required to get my hands on every aspect of the initial warrant, her arrest, body camera footage from the arresting officers and more. I knew that when we ended up in court, we would need all available evidence. Somewhere a mistake had been made, and I had to find it at whatever cost. I started with calls to the Nye County Recorder’s office to obtain the initial arrest warrant from 2011; I was told I needed to call the Nye County Sheriff’s office. The Sheriff’s office then explained they do not keep warrants and it may be with the District Attorney’s office. I then called Nye County District Attorney’s office and was greeted by a woman named Vanessa, and for the third time was told they didn’t keep them, the Justice Court would have it. At that point I broke, I asked her to please give me any advice she could, I was hitting dead end after dead end. As I started to explain the situation I could hear her begin to interrupt me, I knew she was legally bound to not offer any legal advice, but for some reason, she continued to listen. She gave me the benefit of the doubt that this could be the one-in-a-million case of someone being falsely arrested. She then told me she was an administrator with the District Attorney’s office and typically wouldn’t be answering the phone, I don’t know what it was that I said, or if someone was looking out for us that day but she restored my faith in humanity at that very moment. She offered me her e-mail address and told me to forward her as much information as I could, she would personally pull the file and have a detective/prosecutor take a look at it to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. I was beyond thankful and immediately sent over images of everything we had from her stint in jail along with a copy of her driver’s license along with an explanation of the situation with a heartfelt thank you for her time, it meant the world to me. Minutes after sending the e-mail I realized this could be our only chance to prove Brittany was not the criminal she was being made out to be, before standing trial; I scrambled to think of ways to prove she wasn’t in Pahrump in the months before the 2011 warrant. I still didn’t know when the apparent crime had been committed; it could have been weeks or months before the issuance of the warrant. I needed overwhelming evidence indicating she was not there, and I needed it fast. If we missed this opportunity, we would be stuck in a legal battle that could forever change the course of our lives. I started by going as far back as I could with her online bank statements, thankfully Wells Fargo allowed us to go back as far as January 2011, I saved all 2011 statements and forwarded them on to her again explaining I would do whatever it took to prove she was not involved. Next, I asked Brittany to contact her employers, schools, sports teams and anything else we could gather from that time. We needed proof of every shift worked; class attended, or place she had been. We needed to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt she was not in Pahrump, easier said than done when you’re talking about proving you weren’t somewhere six and a half years ago never having expected you’d need an alibi to maintain your freedom. I’d also like to thank her employer for actually sending someone into the attic to take copies of her 2011 hours worked almost immediately. 4 hours later I received a call from Brittany while she was at work, crying but with a different tone, I realized I had heard her cry more in the last day than in our entire relationship. She went on to tell me someone named Vanessa from Nye county just called and told her they had poured over the file and with the information provided, and it was quickly apparent she was indeed innocent! The deputy who originally filed the warrant had selected the wrong Brittany White in the system and started the process that became this mess. She told Brittany that all charges were being dropped, she would not need to show up to court and by Friday we would be sent corresponding paperwork. They were able to identify the correct Brittany White who has an extensive criminal history is currently in prison on another charge. You cannot imagine the joy I felt, the overwhelming sense of accomplishment that somehow by the stroke of god I had cleared her name in under 24 hours from her initial arrest. Something I had been told repeatedly could take months and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Seeing her smile again was incredible, knowing her life would return to normal. I genuinely cannot thank Vanessa enough, what she did is beyond words. Taking the time to listen to me, just a random man on the phone, proved to be a life-changing event for us. We’re often too caught up in the routine of our job, and I have to imagine in her line of work she’s lied to non-stop by criminals. Without her, we would be drowning in legal fees and in fear for Brittany’s freedom for weeks/months to come. This woman deserves a medal, singlehandedly unraveling major mistakes that had cost a young woman her freedom in mere hours. I don’t think life will ever be the same for Brittany; this has been a very traumatic event, just last night she commented that as she passed two police cars on the way home, she became terrified. I hadn’t considered the ongoing consequences of the situation but realized after what she went through, the way she was treated and labeled a criminal I believe she’ll forever be scared that this could happen again. She’s a strong supporter of all service members and always has been, but to think this won’t affect her day to day life would be foolish. This just goes to show how a mistake by someone in a place of authority can ultimately wreak havoc on someone’s life. We may never know what the outcome would have been had I not been able to bail her out, collect evidence, do research and eventually connect with Vanessa. I can, however, say it would have been very costly, stressful and we’d have missed much more time at work at a minimum. We even began canceling the upcoming vacation we had planned for six months as the initial court date was right in the middle of our week out of town, our first week-long vacation in almost three years of being together. Had we been unable to post bail, find legal quality legal representation or a myriad of other things gone right this story may have ended with a hard working innocent young woman being convicted of a felony and spend a minimum of a year in prison. Her life forever changed, relationships lost, career ruined and much, much more. Simply unimaginable. How we can prevent this from ever happening again? There needs to be a system of checks and balances when warrants are issued. Mistakes like this cannot happen, the citizens deserve better, and people need to be held accountable. When you’re in a position of authority, specifically life-changing authority, you must be held to a higher standard. You absolutely cannot make a mistake like this, you hold the keys to someone’s future, and you must take that responsibility seriously every single time, without fail. We get but one life to live and your failure can destroy all that we have. This work should be double, even triple checked to ensure accuracy. At the time the warrant was signed by the acting District Attorney Brian T. Kunzi through his deputy, Tierra Jones. Tierra Jones has since been appointed to the Eighth Judicial District Court here in Nevada. Take that in for a moment, the individual who filed the warrant that lead to the false felony arrest of my girlfriend is now a judge presiding over criminal cases in our state. This just goes to show that mistakes can be made at any level. This begs the question, was this her only mistake? Additionally, former District Attorney Brian T. Kunzi, did you not actually review the information provided to you for this warrant? Did you just sign on the dotted line without verifying the information provided and change her future? I understand those that made mistakes may have done so inadvertently, that doesn’t however change the harsh reality that they’ve had a massive impact on people’s lives. It’s unfortunate the current members of Nye County are stuck cleaning up this mess, thus far they’ve been extremely helpful. I will continue to update this article as it develops and eventually share the video documentary with the world. In closing, she is home safe trying to return to a normal life. Be sure to hold those you love close; you never know when life can change in an instant. I ask that you share this article with your friends and family, mistakes are made that ultimately change lives in an adverse way and we as a people need to be aware of that. We must to fight for the justice of those that are falsely accused. Thank you for taking the time to read our story. Emory Peterson and Brittany White We’ve received the paperwork dropping all charges, thank god, the nightmare is over. We now must begin to put the pieces back together, have her arrest expunged and her good name restored. |

I tell her I’ll be there in 15 minutes and will do whatever it takes to get her out of there.\n\nHaving no prior experience bailing someone from jail I called a bail bond company, I’m told the cost is 15% of the bail ($750 in our case), and that is the fee by law. The money would not be returned regardless of the outcome of the case. Fortunately, through hard work and saving, we have the liquidity to pay the bail in cash which means we’ll theoretically receive it all back once things are settled.\n\nI arrive at the Washoe County Sheriff’s office minutes later with $5,000 cash in hand. I need answers, and if I need to have an attorney present I’d be happy to have one there in minutes.\n\nEventually, a supervisor does indeed come up and is a rather pleasant man. He tells me everything matches and there is little he can do.\n\nBrittany was born in 1984, lived in Las Vegas from 1987 until 2005 and has since been a Reno resident. They scrutinize every bill and I wonder if the assumption made is that the drug dealing boyfriend arrived with large amounts of cash just after her arrest and is par for the course.\n\n\n\nShe calls me every 45 minutes and gives me updates while crying, still scared beyond means, her charge carries mandatory minimum sentencing of 1 year in prison in the state of Nevada. Her supervisor was far more accepting of the situation than I could have ever expected, she believed in Brittany, thank god.\n\nIt’s now after 7 pm, and I’m told it would be 4-6 hours until she is released, I ask that they do what they can to speed things up. She had repeatedly told me she was freezing and that no one cared, and they were beginning to treat her worse and worse as time went on seemingly due to her lack of admitting she was guilty. One female member of the Sheriff’s office commented that “she was surprised she had figured out how to stay out of jail this long.” You can imagine my internal outrage at this point.\n\nIf this could happen to her, it could happen to anyone, and the consequences are life-changing, to say the least. Imagine having to tell a family member:\n\n“I love you, and I believe you, but there is nothing I can do to get you out of jail, we don’t have enough money, you’re going to have to stay in there until your court date.”\n\nI want that to sink in, that is absolutely the reality for the vast majority of Americans. This equates to “guilty until proven innocent” when you don’t have the financial ability to fight a false charge. Again, I am so thankful we are fortunate enough to cover the entire $5,000 without adversely affecting our lives. We are not rich, we merely live within our means and take saving seriously.\n\nHad we not been able to pay the bail or come up with the $750 the most likely scenario would have been her being held up to 72 hours for an arraignment. Without any further evidence, she could have then been extradited to Nye County to stand trial on February 5th, 2018. Imagine being stuck in jail for 14 days and transferred six and a half hours away to a city you’ve never been to in shackles. Outrageous.\n\nAround 9 pm I headed back up to the jail with full camera and lighting gear in hand, I knew nobody would appreciate me showing up looking like a reporter pointing a camera in their face, but for me, it was the principle of the situation. You can imagine how hard it was to listen to, but it needed to happen for the sake of any other falsely accused victim in the future.\n\nWe headed home; she decided she was too terrified to pick up her car that night, she didn’t want to be pulled over and somehow in this sick dream be taken back into custody. We got her some dinner and a much-deserved glass of wine to settle her nerves and off to bed.\n\nTUESDAY MORNING\nI woke up early with one goal, I needed the best lawyer in town regardless of cost and to meet with him/her immediately. Remember most of America can’t afford bail themselves out of jail, let alone begin to defend their freedom.\n\nI received a call back from Robert Fahrendorf, a highly recommended local criminal defense attorney and he graciously listened to me explain the situation to him. Personally, that was not a decision I was willing to make.\n\nI felt the need to take matters into my own hands. Somewhere a mistake had been made, and I had to find it at whatever cost.\n\nI started with calls to the Nye County Recorder’s office to obtain the initial arrest warrant from 2011; I was told I needed to call the Nye County Sheriff’s office. I was beyond thankful and immediately sent over images of everything we had from her stint in jail along with a copy of her driver’s license along with an explanation of the situation with a heartfelt thank you for her time, it meant the world to me.\n\nMinutes after sending the e-mail I realized this could be our only chance to prove Brittany was not the criminal she was being made out to be, before standing trial; I scrambled to think of ways to prove she wasn’t in Pahrump in the months before the 2011 warrant. I started by going as far back as I could with her online bank statements, thankfully Wells Fargo allowed us to go back as far as January 2011, I saved all 2011 statements and forwarded them on to her again explaining I would do whatever it took to prove she was not involved.\n\n \n\nNext, I asked Brittany to contact her employers, schools, sports teams and anything else we could gather from that time. I’d also like to thank her employer for actually sending someone into the attic to take copies of her 2011 hours worked almost immediately.\n\n \n\n\n4 hours later I received a call from Brittany while she was at work, crying but with a different tone, I realized I had heard her cry more in the last day than in our entire relationship. Without her, we would be drowning in legal fees and in fear for Brittany’s freedom for weeks/months to come.\n\nThis woman deserves a medal, singlehandedly unraveling major mistakes that had cost a young woman her freedom in mere hours.\n\nI don’t think life will ever be the same for Brittany; this has been a very traumatic event, just last night she commented that as she passed two police cars on the way home, she became terrified. We even began canceling the upcoming vacation we had planned for six months as the initial court date was right in the middle of our week out of town, our first week-long vacation in almost three years of being together.\n\nHad we been unable to post bail, find legal quality legal representation or a myriad of other things gone right this story may have ended with a hard working innocent young woman being convicted of a felony and spend a minimum of a year in prison. Her life forever changed, relationships lost, career ruined and much, much more. Simply unimaginable.\n\nHow we can prevent this from ever happening again? There needs to be a system of checks and balances when warrants are issued. Mistakes like this cannot happen, the citizens deserve better, and people need to be held accountable. When you’re in a position of authority, specifically life-changing authority, you must be held to a higher standard. You absolutely cannot make a mistake like this, you hold the keys to someone’s future, and you must take that responsibility seriously every single time, without fail. We get but one life to live and your failure can destroy all that we have. This work should be double, even triple checked to ensure accuracy.\n\nAt the time the warrant was signed by the acting District Attorney Brian T. It’s unfortunate the current members of Nye County are stuck cleaning up this mess, thus far they’ve been extremely helpful.\n\nI will continue to update this article as it develops and eventually share the video documentary with the world.\n\n\nIn closing, she is home safe trying to return to a normal life. Be sure to hold those you love close; you never know when life can change in an instant. I ask that you share this article with your friends and family, mistakes are made that ultimately change lives in an adverse way and we as a people need to be aware of that. We must to fight for the justice of those that are falsely accused.\n\nThank you for taking the time to read our story.\n\nEmory Peterson and Brittany White\n\n\n\nWe’ve received the paperwork dropping all charges, thank god, the nightmare is over.\n\nWe now must begin to put the pieces back together, have her arrest expunged and her good name restored.\n\n",

| title | Why buying an electric car still doesn’t make sense (for most of us) |
| body | <center></center> I’ll be the first to admit; I’d love a shiny new Tesla Model S charging in my garage in an attempt to save myself the agony of filling up my large truck. For many this is the case, we drive larger less efficient vehicles for many reasons. After a while, the allure of a new vehicle wears off and the lack of fuel efficiency and overall cost of ownership have many looking to alternatives. I currently drive a large diesel Ram 3500 Mega Cab Dually and average a whopping 13mpg (ouch!). We tow a large RV often being a dually a set of (6) tires on my aftermarket 22” wheels is north of $3,000. Add to that I’m lucky to get 30,000 miles out of them and it’s one costly vehicle to drive every day. Your vehicle is likely less painful to drive, but you know you can do better. For most the decision is to purchase a second far more fuel-efficient vehicle to do the bulk of your driving, saving your existing gas hog for family outings or weekend trips (my current plan). Others ditch the inefficient vehicle altogether. Both options are great, however, if your goal is to save money driving the initial cost of purchasing an all-electric vehicle are still quite cost prohibitive. There are more all-electric vehicles available now than ever before, and the list keeps growing. It seems feasible that one day ALL cars will be electric but for now they are still in their fledgling stages and far more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts. The tax incentives for new electric vehicles help to offset those differences but don’t entirely bridge the gap, and those incentives could soon end. We’re going to make some assumptions here. You’re reading an article about saving money on gas and may be motivated by the environment, or you're an average American who isn’t in a position to pay cash for a new or even a used car. You likely have credit card debt, maybe school loans and more. Regardless of your exact situation, the vast majority of our country can only purchase a new vehicle using credit with increasingly extended periods of repayment. The day you own your car outright and reduce your debt is the day your life will become freer, and this article is a path to that end. With any decent job and reasonable credit score you can head to your local dealership and likely drive away a shiny new electric car today. It’ll be cheap to charge and you won’t be stuck buying gas but you will be stuck with a rather sizable car payment and a quickly depreciating asset. Regardless of the make or model you purchase (Tesla, Chevrolet, Toyota and more) your new car is immediately worth significantly less than you bought it for and will only continue to decline rapidly. Electric vehicles will continue to depreciate faster than their gas-powered counterparts in the coming years because the technology is changing so quickly your new car is outdated almost overnight. New vehicles are released every year, and with more manufacturers getting involved the competition is fierce. As the range between charges increase and the prices come down year after year you’ll still be stuck with that monthly payment on a now relic of automobile technology. If history repeats itself, you’ll trade it in and upgrade, likely carry over the negative equity in the car into the new loan and the cycle repeats itself. Odds are you may never actually ‘own’ a car you’ve bought, and eventually, the debt becomes so high you’re stuck with a vehicle you cannot afford. Quite common believe it or not. <h1>Is an electric car the solution to driving cheap?</h1> While a new all-electric car may average near 100MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and be inexpensive to charge, that’s just one piece of the puzzle. What really matters is the cost per mile to own. Everything else becomes sales pitches and numbers on a screen. Let’s make this easy to understand, and you’ll see why we’ve decided to go hybrid, rather than electric only. First off, it doesn’t really matter which car you’re considering, the initial purchase of an all-electric vehicle on the low end is an MSRP of $30,000+, most starting near $35,000. That said few of us genuinely purchase the bare bones car, and those options add up fast, so do all of the other fees when buying new. You’ll almost certainly have some form of the following; tax, title, dealer doc fees, delivery, extended warranty and more. Your $35,000 new car often leaves you signing a loan for over $40,000-$50,000 (or more!). We’re not even considering higher-end options like a Tesla Model S or X, both of which can quickly become $150,000 vehicles. Now let’s be VERY optimistic with our calculations here and assume you purchase a new all-electric vehicle and after taxes, fees, registration, warranty and more and end up paying only $30,000 out the door after the federal tax incentive (which may or may not exist shortly). Let’s also assume that vehicle gets an EPA estimated 100MPGe (some get better, some get worse, but we're trying to keep things simple). Let’s also not factor in tire wear, because regardless of the compact fuel-efficient vehicle you purchase they will all wear tires at relatively the same rate. Yes, there can be a difference in cost based on size and style of the tire but again in the same category of vehicles such as this, the difference is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Tires go on sale all the time, and many last longer than the theoretical time and mileage we’re going to examine. Let’s also assume you keep the car for five years and drive 60,000 miles, ‘average’ by all accounts. At the end of 5 years, you’ll have spent $2,406 on electricity (using Tesla’s math on the model S which should be relatively accurate). Add the $30,000 original purchase, plus the rather expensive annual registration fees on a new car. Let’s average those at $250/year (your cost may vary). Total spent - $33,656. Keep in mind you likely still owe far more for the car than it’s worth, and you’ve been paying interest on the money you borrowed the entire time. At this point, what is the car worth? Optimistically say $15,000, remember your car is now five years old and all-electric technology is vastly superior. Your car now has 60,000 miles and is nearing the end of its warranty (manufacturer dependent). New all-electric vehicles cost less than they did five years ago, they go further between charges, and they cost less to maintain as the technology has matured. Keep in mind all of the figures above are not set in stone, but they ARE optimistic. So, how’d your electric car do? Let’s again assume you sell your car for $15,000 after the five years (or more likely trade it in for substantially less destroying any chance of so-called ‘efficiency’). Well, to go 60,000 miles in 5 years it ended up costing you $33,656 - $15,000 (after selling your car) = $18,656. Now we divide that by the 60,000 miles you drove and come to a cost of 31 cents per mile. Not bad, but, watch how much better it could be. <h1>What’s the alternative?</h1> As a long time mechanic, I’ve bought and sold many vehicles, 79 to date and I’m 31. I’ve purchased all used, and it has saved me countless thousands of dollars. I escape the radical depreciation of a new vehicle, and sales tax (8% of $30,000 adds up!) right off the bat. I’m also able to understand the reliability of a vehicle much more after seeing their flaws come to light in the real world. The new car buyer learns as they go, which can become quite expensive. We can all assume a brand is reliable, but time tells the true story for any specific model, every manufacturer has their flops. As of late, I’ve been researching a replacement vehicle for the wife’s 2006 Subaru Outback, which has been a great car. It’s approaching 200,000 miles and while it likely has another 200,000 left but she wants to save money at the pump and not worry about the future maintenance of the higher mileage car. To be fair, the car has been extremely reliable and never left her stranded. We’ve only had to replace the parts you’d have to replace on any car: brakes, tires, belts, oil changes, fluids, and air filters. Nothing has broken, it’s never stopped and again will likely continue for years. That said, she averages 25mpg and has driven 45,000 miles in a year and a half! Being that she has a reliable vehicle we had a fantastic opportunity, the ability to take our time searching for the right vehicle. Often consumers wait until their car is on its last leg and are forced to make a quick decision resulting in an overpriced, under-researched vehicle. After looking for months, we decided on a 2008 Toyota Prius that we purchased from the original owner with 113,000 miles. It appears almost new, exceptionally well maintained and very clean. I did quite a bit of research into the Prius reliability and was shocked to find out they are seemingly bulletproof. They’re commonly used as Taxi’s because of their reliability and low cost of ownership; they’re based on proven technology and often come with features only found in higher end/more expensive/newer cars. Ours came with a touch screen, navigation, hands-free calling, keyless entry and even a push start without having to insert the key. These were of course just bonus items that didn’t ‘make the sale’. Aside from heated seats, the car has all the bells and whistles of a brand-new hybrid in its class. It’s comfortable, has quite a bit of storage and is all around an enjoyable vehicle. The seller was asking $7,000, and after a test drive and some negotiation, we were able to drive it home for $6,400. We paid cash, but ultimately most would be able to secure financing for such a little amount with ease. If you go that route, I’d highly suggest securing financing before shopping. Good deals on good cars don't last; you won’t have time to apply for a loan, someone else will show up with cash before you’ve made a deal. We decided we would put new tires on it immediately. They weren’t a requirement, but with a current deal at Costco and the $600 savings from the asking price (which we would have been willing to pay for such an immaculate car), it was an easy decision. The tires came with an 80,000-mile warranty and were only $356 out the door! The previous owner had the car detailed and all maintenance work completed. No leaks, squeaks or anything needing attention, even came with a brand-new set of tire chains for winter driving. So, let’s break down our expected cost of ownership on this car for the same five years, 60,000 miles. The registration was $91, a savings of $159 per year over the new car. The Prius averages 46mpg, and in 60,000 miles we’ll use an estimated 1,305 gallons of gas. Using an average gas price of $3.00 per gallon (currently can be had for $2.79 here but it does fluctuate), this equates to $3,915 in gas over the five years/60,000 miles. We’ll even add oil changes to the cost, which the Prius only requires every 5,000 miles and we do ourselves in about 5 minutes at a cost of $14 or less, totaling $168 in our example. Total spent - $10,938. Now keep in mind, we’ve also paid $0 in interest, $0 monthly payments and the vehicle will likely still be worth $4,000 or more. The depreciation has slowed to a near halt and the market for inexpensive cars is great, countless people can afford a $4,000 car and pay cash, while not as many can afford the $15,000 car from the prior example. But let’s go even less optimistic for this car, let’s say the hybrid battery fails while we own it (the most realistic failure in this car, but still unlikely). We can get a replacement for $1,000 and install it in a couple of hours in the garage with basic tools. So, after this unexpected failure, where do we stand at the end of 5 years? Total spent - $11,938 - $4,000 sales price = $7,938. Now we divide that by the 60,000 miles you drove and come to a cost of 13.2 cents per mile! A 57.5% savings versus the all-electric car. If we don’t have to replace the battery in the car, which we likely won’t, it will drop the cost to 11.5 cents per mile or a savings of 63%. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the significant savings in insurance premiums on an older car (the vehicle is less expensive for the insurance company to replace if crashed), and we were very optimistic with the numbers regarding the new all-electric car. We also did not factor in the cost of borrowing the money for the new car (at a low 3.11% APR you’d be looking at $2,432 in interest over the five years raising your cost even further to 35 cents per mile). The real world can be much harsher than these numbers. As you can see, even with the most optimistic results the cost of driving that new all-electric car is 2.5 times higher than a used Prius. Or, with more realistic numbers it’s more than three times the cost. That’s a HUGE difference. The cost difference over five years is $13,234, more than enough to pay my mortgage for an entire year or buy two more Priuses. Maybe you’re not a homeowner and driving a used Prius for the next five years could be your way out of debt or your path to home ownership? That my friends is why we’ll be driving a used Toyota Prius rather than buying a new all-electric (or any new car for that matter), vehicle and saddling ourselves with a monthly payment on a depreciating asset. Who knows, maybe in 5 years we’ll sell our old Prius and buy your used all-electric car with the money we’ve saved. |

"title": "Why buying an electric car still doesn’t make sense (for most of us)",
"body": "<center></center>\n \nI’ll be the first to admit; I’d love a shiny new Tesla Model S charging in my garage in an attempt to save myself the agony of filling up my large truck. Add to that I’m lucky to get 30,000 miles out of them and it’s one costly vehicle to drive every day.\n \nYour vehicle is likely less painful to drive, but you know you can do better. For most the decision is to purchase a second far more fuel-efficient vehicle to do the bulk of your driving, saving your existing gas hog for family outings or weekend trips (my current plan). Others ditch the inefficient vehicle altogether. Both options are great, however, if your goal is to save money driving the initial cost of purchasing an all-electric vehicle are still quite cost prohibitive.\n \nThere are more all-electric vehicles available now than ever before, and the list keeps growing. It seems feasible that one day ALL cars will be electric but for now they are still in their fledgling stages and far more expensive than their gas-powered counterparts. The tax incentives for new electric vehicles help to offset those differences but don’t entirely bridge the gap, and those incentives could soon end.\n \nWe’re going to make some assumptions here. \n \nWith any decent job and reasonable credit score you can head to your local dealership and likely drive away a shiny new electric car today. Quite common believe it or not.\n \n \n<h1>Is an electric car the solution to driving cheap?</h1>\n \nWhile a new all-electric car may average near 100MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and be inexpensive to charge, that’s just one piece of the puzzle. What really matters is the cost per mile to own. Everything else becomes sales pitches and numbers on a screen. Let’s make this easy to understand, and you’ll see why we’ve decided to go hybrid, rather than electric only.\n \nFirst off, it doesn’t really matter which car you’re considering, the initial purchase of an all-electric vehicle on the low end is an MSRP of $30,000+, most starting near $35,000. We’re not even considering higher-end options like a Tesla Model S or X, both of which can quickly become $150,000 vehicles.\n \nNow let’s be VERY optimistic with our calculations here and assume you purchase a new all-electric vehicle and after taxes, fees, registration, warranty and more and end up paying only $30,000 out the door after the federal tax incentive (which may or may not exist shortly). Tires go on sale all the time, and many last longer than the theoretical time and mileage we’re going to examine.\n \nLet’s also assume you keep the car for five years and drive 60,000 miles, ‘average’ by all accounts. At the end of 5 years, you’ll have spent $2,406 on electricity (using Tesla’s math on the model S which should be relatively accurate). Add the $30,000 original purchase, plus the rather expensive annual registration fees on a new car. Let’s average those at $250/year (your cost may vary).\n \nTotal spent - $33,656. New all-electric vehicles cost less than they did five years ago, they go further between charges, and they cost less to maintain as the technology has matured.\n \nKeep in mind all of the figures above are not set in stone, but they ARE optimistic. Not bad, but, watch how much better it could be.\n \n<h1>What’s the alternative?</h1>\n \nAs a long time mechanic, I’ve bought and sold many vehicles, 79 to date and I’m 31. We can all assume a brand is reliable, but time tells the true story for any specific model, every manufacturer has their flops.\n \nAs of late, I’ve been researching a replacement vehicle for the wife’s 2006 Subaru Outback, which has been a great car. That said, she averages 25mpg and has driven 45,000 miles in a year and a half!\n \nBeing that she has a reliable vehicle we had a fantastic opportunity, the ability to take our time searching for the right vehicle. The sheep will likely freak out and sell fast before they 'loose everything' thus perpetuating the correction, then the big money comes in, buys up a LOT and cashes out on the upward trend their money should start to influence. |

| title | New Tax Reform Bill - Effects on general public and general feelings |
| body | I'd like to hear everyones opinion on the newly passed tax bill. It appears a vast majority of America will be enjoying a rather sizable discount on their Federal returns, yet it seems on social media/news the liberal side is labeling this is a major loss and it will 'destroy America' etc. We've already seen multiple businesses handing out considerable bonuses, new employee hiring and even pledges of $15/hr internal minimum wages. As a small business owner I'm very excited to see a general lower cost of doing business and can't help but think the same will be said for the vast majority of businesses across the country. Am I missing something? I realize there are multiple opinions on this and I'd like to hear how everyone sees this affecting their lives in a real sense. |

| body | I really could see it going both ways, everyone is attempting to get on board with cryptocurrency these days so it may be a way to ride the wave. That said beyond purchasing I don't see the general public being willing to do any actual 'work' to earn money if history proves itself to be true. Hopefully it takes off, I think we'd all appreciate that in one form or another. |
