      "body": "Greetings from a minnow!\n\nI would like to take this opportunity to share with you a significant part of my culture, the story of Goddess Durga and how she defeated Mahishasura, a shape-shifting, deceptive and powerful demon.\n\n![C360_2015-10-22-18-31-08-924.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdu45V5EBhapqVguJvP8N94qmU4Tgo8s4Zutfm259mjqR/C360_2015-10-22-18-31-08-924.jpg)\n\nMahishasura was gifted a boon by Lord Brahma, the creator, due to his strong penance. He said:\n\n\"Lord, I was born after my father had a boon from Lord Agni. I wish to get the boon myself to make it more powerful. I wish that I cannot be killed by any man, God or animal. I wish to be the most powerful of all creatures ever created\"\n\nLord Brahma had no choice, and thus he granted his wish. With this power, he set his mind to be the all powerful king of the universe who would rule over even the Gods.  He defeated every mortal on Earth and set his sight on the heavens. With his boon, he defeated Lord Indra, regarded as the King of the Gods. He drove him and all of his followers out of the heavens and announced himself as the king of Gods. Left with no choice, Lord Indra went to Lord Brahma seeking help to defeat this demon. But, there was nothing he could do as he himself gave him the blessing of \"not getting defeated by any man, animal or God\". Indra has lost all hope. Lord Brahma asked him to seek the help of Lord Vishnu, the preserver. Indra, along with all the other Gods reached Lord Vishnu's home and asked for his help. But with Lord Brahma's boon, even he could not kill that evil demon.\n\nWhen all hope was lost, a strong and melodious voice filled the atmosphere. The voice was that of Goddess Mahadevi (meaning the great goddess). She said, \"Children, Lord Brahma’s boon protects Mahishasura from any man and God but not from a woman. Use all your powers and together create a great power. The three Goddesses should come together. I will incarnate there in the form of a warrior Goddess. Gift the warrior with all your weapons. She will solve all your problems.\"\n\nHearing this, the three Shaktis (powers) - Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati smiled. They were all incarnations of the great Goddess. Now their mother wanted to create another power strong enough to destroy Mahishasura. The three of them merged together. When they came together Shiva (the Destroyer), Vishnu and Brahma gave out a blinding white light, which fused with the merged bodies of the three Goddess. The light was so fierce that it could not even be seen by Devas with their eyes.\n\nFrom this light emerged a woman with a thousand hands. The Goddess looked ferocious and beautiful at the same time. Vishwakarma – the architect of the Gods gave Durga his axe and a very powerful armour. Her clothes and Her carrier - the lion - was a gift from Lord of the mountains, Himavant. And thus, Goddess Durga was battle ready.\n\nArmed with the power to defeat all evil in the universe, Goddess Durga set off to defeat Mahishasura on her Lion with a chilling roar. The roar was so loud that it spread across the three worlds and Mahishasura's heart trembled. He ran outside to see what was happening. He saw a beautiful but ferocious woman coming towards him which filled his heart with fear. He threw all of his army at her in order to stop her. But anything which they tried proved to be useless. Half of his army was killed and the ones which were left, had no courage to stand against the Goddess.\n\nMahishasura realising the prowess of Durga, used his shape-shifting ability and changed into the form of a buffalo and attacked Durga. Durga's lion attacked the buffalo and Durga threw her noose around his neck and drew him towards her sword. Mahishasura quickly changed into the form of an elephant. Using his trunk, he pulled up the legs of the lion towards him, trying to throw Durga to the ground. However it made no difference to the Devi. She stuck at Mahishasura with her sword. The sword found its mark and there was a blood flowing at the elephant’s trunk.\n\nMahishasura tried his hands at everything. He tried to change his attack, his brute force, the positioning of his army, his own personal appearance. .he tried changing everything. hoping that something would stop the Warrior Goddess. But he should have known better.\n\nShe was Durga, the invincible. No matter hat shape he took, he was not at par with her power. The battle took place for 9 days. Mahishasura slowly realised that she was not fighting him with her full strength, she wanted to destroy his ego, slowly. As a last resort the demon king Mahishasura took the form of a buffalo and attacked the Goddess.\nShe drew out her sword and slashed at him. Mahisha saw that the wound was very deep. If he had escape any further injuries, he had to change form. Mahisha had half emerged from the form of the buffalo, when the Devi let out another roar and jumped from her lion. She leapt on the Mahisha and pined him down. She used so much force that Mahisha was unable to move or even use his power of changing form. Mahishasura was defeated and peace was restored.\n\nThis battle and the victory is celebrated every year throughout India in the form of \"Durga Puja\". It is particularly celebrated in the state of West Bengal in the city of Kolkata in the honour of celebrating the unfathomable power of Goddess Durga. This festival is celebrated during the span of whole period of Navaratri for a time span of 10 days. From the sixth day of Navaratri till the ninth day the huge pandals (theme based decorations) of the Goddess Durga are open for the visitors. The tenth day of the Navaratri is called as Dashami and on this day the idols of the Goddess Durga are immerged into water and this process is called as Visarjan.\n\nWith this, i leave you all with a few glimpses of the festival from my city.
