bodyHad a GSD that I trained personally and while he wasn't professional level protector, there is no way someone would think to enter our house. Yet he was great with the kids and they came along after we had him. Was a little worried about his reaction to a baby in the house, but from the first day we brought my oldest home he bonded with her. Currently we have a true pet that while large I don't think would protect me for anything. Maybe my Daughters...maybe. But we got him at 7 years old and as a Goldendoodle he just isn't wired the same as our Shephard was. Plus he was raised to be calm as he was owned by 80+ year olds. But he is a great dog and I can walk him without a leash and never think twice about it. BTW, Wanted to let you know that @viking-ventures featured you in their [entry post](https://steemit.com/pifc/@viking-ventures/my-entry-for-the-pay-it-forward-curation-contest-week-20-7c087b678f8aest) to the [Pay It Forward Curation Contest](https://steemit.com/payitforward/@pifc/week-20-pay-it-forward-curation-contest-71556c5823d6cest) and that is how I found you.

I understand on the higher end the pricing is mostly set up because the market will support that pricing. So if you are extremely wealthy and you do not want to be part the selection process or your time is to valuable to do more looking then go with that. Most likely you will just be throwing away money. My expert advice is that you should not spend more than $25,000 dollars for a great protection dog! I say GREAT not what many people are calling Level 3 or Executive protection dog. This is a dog that will work off leash, bite and release upon command, deal with multiple attackers, protect an object or person, (Like your child playing in the yard.) be great around children and other animals, bite with a hidden sleeve in real world scenarios, basically everything that is listed a highly trained Level 3 or Executive protection dog can do. ![47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf7CP3GRGEKrSD1AYeG6f8Siqcm9kAXqqJUFaT6CoYnfK/47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg) Many of my friends and connections that train dogs at this level will not like the fact I am putting a cap of $25,000 on getting a great protection dog. In fact they will say: “David are you out of your mind?” Let me assure you I am not. Let’s break down exactly how you can get a great protection dog for $25,000 or LESS! Finding the right puppy. When looking for a puppy you will need to do your research on the right breed for you and your family. For this example I will use a German Shepherd Dog or GSD. These are my favorite breed for many reasons but you can use this for any working or protection breed. Once you have done your research and made your choice now start looking for breeders that supply green dogs to police departments or the military. Note: These breeders will have kennel raised dogs that are not geared toward family use. That is ok because you are getting a puppy from them not a Green Dog. This way you know the puppy is coming from a long line of working dogs bred for protection work. Be aware that when you approach these breeders they might not want to sell you one of their puppies or want to sell you a puppy that they have deemed to be a pet quality dog. You do not want a pet quality puppy. Build a list of 5 -10 of these breeders and ask them what they expect from you. A good breeder will have a bunch of questions for you and expectations. You must show that you are committed to not only properly training the dog but also educating yourself and your family on the correct way to handle and care for the dog. ![41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdw6aqCux9VHZJhSRmLpfU7tMPutqckD2yNkdKHTMhWgG/41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg) Pricing on these puppies should range between $2,000 - $5,000 I have found great puppies for $1,000-$1,500 because of my network and connections. Note: It really does not matter if you get AKC papers or the puppy is AKC registered or not. AKC registry is just for registering a pure breed dog and most of these will be show type dogs anyway. Many times these puppies will come from European working dog lines and the parents will have foreign papers. *I tend to prefer the Czech line for hard core protection work but do not recommend this blood line for newbies or beginners. With that said you can get one that their great grandparents or grandparents were brought over and the line has been bred with German or the old Eastern Block blood lines.* This is normally done to thin out the sentry type hardness in this blood line. A sentry type protection dog is one that will show aggression and bite anyone that is not their handler. You want a dog that will love and protect the whole family. A puppy should not be afraid of you when you visit and should naturally come to investigate who you are with their tail up or wagging. You should take the puppy and turn him or her over on their back and hold them there a few seconds. You will notice most of these puppies that are bred for protection will put up a fight and try to turn over or escape. This is what you want. Do not get a puppy that submits only after a few seconds. At the same time most breeders will get upset if you try to do this for more than 30 seconds. They do not want their puppies to feel dominated by a stranger at such a young age. So be mindful of this. Sometimes if the breeder is supplying Green dogs they will also have training expertise. You can work out a lower puppy price if you agree to have them train the puppy for you. I highly recommend if you do this you work out the whole schedule and pricing with a time line and get it in writing. For your puppy to become a family protection dog you must have it bond with you and your family before this higher level training starts. Normally after the 6 month old mark. Some trainers will start older and old school Schutzhund trainers start at 11 months. I recommend you start teaching your puppy in a family setting, the basics of good manners, potty training, socialization, and normal commands during this bonding period. Which should be during the first 6-8 months. You can even join a local sporting dog club like Schutzhund, French ring, World ring, etc depending what group is near you. ![k9withdaughter.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSVwfF5VCmrAncF4cAUafxniJjBL8pvhb46zkav1pr1Ac/k9withdaughter.JPG) These groups / clubs will help you learn how to handle your puppy while helping you teach the basics. __PRO TIP: If you have children in your family then when you get your puppy have them bond with the youngest child first. (If the child is older than 5 years old. If younger wait till you have taught the puppy manners and basic commands.)__ This can easily be done by getting a 6-8 ft leash and putting it on the puppy and securing the leash around the waist of the child. So that where ever the child goes the puppy will go as well. Even let the puppy sleep in the child’s room on the floor not the bed. The child should be the person that feeds the puppy as well. Then rotate every month or so to the next child. All the time having the whole family work together training and teaching him or her. This will also help you and the family learn to be calm around the puppy. You and the family can and should play often with your puppy. But you and the family should not shout or yell at the puppy. Even when the puppy makes a mess or chews something. If that happens it is your fault because you or the designated family member was not watching the puppy. Research and learn how to train and raise a puppy in the house. ![423485_433894649982102_680246966_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeDkgXQBngzDUvBrDxSc6ZYNzi9zVJx3oEZUth74VaYmw/423485_433894649982102_680246966_n.jpg) ### Selecting the right young adult ### By young adult I mean a bigger puppy to young adult. This is one that is 8 months to 1.5 years old Here the pricing can be very similar to just a little bit more. Stay away from the bargain priced young adults for the most part because these are dogs mostly designated as family dogs and for some reason the breeder has decided would not make the cut to becoming a Green dog. So you should look to spend around $3,000 - $7,000 depending on how much bite work the dog has had with the level of training. Now remember if you are getting a young dog from a Green dog trainer this dog has spent his or her puppyhood most likely in a Kennel environment. So you will have to do extra work in teaching manners and potty training. You could also start looking at breeders that train both working dogs for police and family protection dogs. If they say they train both then you have to ask if the family protection dogs are fostered with real families or brought into and raised their family home environment. Again some breeder trainers will either give you a discount when you have them train the dog or even require you to have them train the dog. Work with them to figure out how you and your family can first bond with the young adult then start training. If you are nearby this trainer it is not as much of an issue. The cost of training more advanced protection work should average out around $50 - $100 dollars an hour. Handler and helper included. Note: You should never, never I mean never be the helper for your dog. The helper is the person that has the bite sleeve on or bite suit on and gets bitten. ![39588_151832494854987_2070875_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNSR3MrRFGFDRLEmvnRErZ4njpaMER6B7teqnPxBFCTSG/39588_151832494854987_2070875_n.jpg) It is ok to work out a deal where you learn to become the helper for other dogs the trainer is working with but your dog should not be present. This can save you a lot of money, possibly cutting your cost in half. Working with the right trainer There are benefits to using a local trainer. If you end up working with a trainer that is local you will be able to learn as your dog learns and it is a win, win situation for both. Having a local trainer makes it easier for the whole family to join in. Depending where you live there might not be a good enough local trainer near you. The benefits of sending your dog to boarding school with a trainer is you will have a fully trained dog faster. ![41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdw6aqCux9VHZJhSRmLpfU7tMPutqckD2yNkdKHTMhWgG/41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg) If you have a local sporting dog club near you this can help lower your overall cost. This would be a Schutzhund or French Ring type club. The cost of membership and training in these clubs can save you thousands of dollars. You can then choose to stop hear once your dog becomes titled but I do not recommend this. The big difference in just having a sport trained dog and a real world protection dog is big. Sport dogs look at the sport as a game. They are conditioned to bite the sleeve and the suit not the person. So you will have to still work with a trainer to teach the dog to bite and protect in real world scenarios. This means working with hidden sleeves and special thinner bite suits that go under normal clothing. Real world scenarios are not just your home, yard or neighborhood. It should include parking lots, garages, café’s, strip malls, woods, parks, all kinds of everyday places. You could spend $2,000 to $5,000 for this transition training. Compared to the $8,000 to $15,000 it would cost starting from scratch. Educating yourself on how to handle a protection dog The best way to do this is join one of these clubs and make it a family activity. This has a number of added benefits for children as well. I am a firm believer in: research read and do then repeat. When you do this you and your family will truly have a great protection dog that is also part of the family. One that will give his or her life for your family. ![47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf7CP3GRGEKrSD1AYeG6f8Siqcm9kAXqqJUFaT6CoYnfK/47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg) Let’s look at the costs involved and ad up everything. I will average this all out you could end up paying more or less depending on actual costs. Puppy: $2,500 Basic training $500 Sport Club Membership and classes per year: $500 Local and national on average. If you go this route and spend 3 years in the club this comes out to be $1,500 not counting event fees for titling. Protection dog trainer Locally after your dog has been titled $100 hr, 1 hr a week 50 weeks a year: $5,000 Now if you go this route and start when the dog is 8 months old and train for 1 year you will need a min of 2 hrs a week. This could be broken up into 4, 30 minute sessions. $10,000 for the year. Then you can do just retraining every couple of months for an hour. ![29257_430634160070_3161422_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmekF722rAdNgRreckuPsiCsGWjRD5gPncb7nMRwSYwZHP/29257_430634160070_3161422_n.jpg) If you send your dog away to be trained on site, aka boarding school, you can have a fully trained dog in 4 to 8 months. This should run around $4,000 - $8,000. You will have to retrain, house training after. So with puppy and sport club training the going the real world protection training route you are looking at around $8,500. Puppy with basic and real world training at around $13,000 Locally Puppy with basic and boarding school real world training of $15,000 for training around $18,000. Young adult would be very similar with the difference paid for by a thousand or two dollars. So I hope from these numbers give you an idea of how much it will cost you to have a great fully trained protection dog grow with your family. Another good thing is that these costs are not due all at once and are paid over time. 1-3 years. You and your family will also learn how to handle the dog and find a new family activity to enjoy. Let me know what you think and you are welcome to check this article and more on the training site I am building. https://k9workingdogsworld.com/how-much-spend-on-protection-dog/

Note: It really does not matter if you get AKC papers or the puppy is AKC registered or not. AKC registry is just for registering a pure breed dog and most of these will be show type dogs anyway. Many times these puppies will come from European working dog lines and the parents will have foreign papers. \n\n*I tend to prefer the Czech line for hard core protection work but do not recommend this blood line for newbies or beginners. With that said you can get one that their great grandparents or grandparents were brought over and the line has been bred with German or the old Eastern Block blood lines.* \n\n \nThis is normally done to thin out the sentry type hardness in this blood line. A sentry type protection dog is one that will show aggression and bite anyone that is not their handler. You want a dog that will love and protect the whole family.\n\n\nA puppy should not be afraid of you when you visit and should naturally come to investigate who you are with their tail up or wagging. You should take the puppy and turn him or her over on their back and hold them there a few seconds. You will notice most of these puppies that are bred for protection will put up a fight and try to turn over or escape. This is what you want. \n\nDo not get a puppy that submits only after a few seconds. At the same time most breeders will get upset if you try to do this for more than 30 seconds. They do not want their puppies to feel dominated by a stranger at such a young age. So be mindful of this.\n\n\nSometimes if the breeder is supplying Green dogs they will also have training expertise. You can work out a lower puppy price if you agree to have them train the puppy for you.\n\n\nI highly recommend if you do this you work out the whole schedule and pricing with a time line and get it in writing. \nFor your puppy to become a family protection dog you must have it bond with you and your family before this higher level training starts. Normally after the 6 month old mark. Some trainers will start older and old school Schutzhund trainers start at 11 months. \n\n \nI recommend you start teaching your puppy in a family setting, the basics of good manners, potty training, socialization, and normal commands during this bonding period. Which should be during the first 6-8 months. You can even join a local sporting dog club like Schutzhund, French ring, World ring, etc depending what group is near you. \n\n![k9withdaughter.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSVwfF5VCmrAncF4cAUafxniJjBL8pvhb46zkav1pr1Ac/k9withdaughter.JPG)\n\nThese groups / clubs will help you learn how to handle your puppy while helping you teach the basics.\n\n__PRO TIP: If you have children in your family then when you get your puppy have them bond with the youngest child first. (If the child is older than 5 years old. If younger wait till you have taught the puppy manners and basic commands.)__ \n\nThis can easily be done by getting a 6-8 ft leash and putting it on the puppy and securing the leash around the waist of the child. So that where ever the child goes the puppy will go as well. Even let the puppy sleep in the child’s room on the floor not the bed. The child should be the person that feeds the puppy as well. \nThen rotate every month or so to the next child. All the time having the whole family work together training and teaching him or her. This will also help you and the family learn to be calm around the puppy. \n\n \nYou and the family can and should play often with your puppy. But you and the family should not shout or yell at the puppy. Even when the puppy makes a mess or chews something. If that happens it is your fault because you or the designated family member was not watching the puppy.\nResearch and learn how to train and raise a puppy in the house.\n\n![423485_433894649982102_680246966_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeDkgXQBngzDUvBrDxSc6ZYNzi9zVJx3oEZUth74VaYmw/423485_433894649982102_680246966_n.jpg)\n\n\n### Selecting the right young adult ###\n\nBy young adult I mean a bigger puppy to young adult. This is one that is 8 months to 1.5 years old\nHere the pricing can be very similar to just a little bit more. Stay away from the bargain priced young adults for the most part because these are dogs mostly designated as family dogs and for some reason the breeder has decided would not make the cut to becoming a Green dog.\n\nSo you should look to spend around $3,000 - $7,000 depending on how much bite work the dog has had with the level of training.\n\nNow remember if you are getting a young dog from a Green dog trainer this dog has spent his or her puppyhood most likely in a Kennel environment. So you will have to do extra work in teaching manners and potty training. \n\n \nYou could also start looking at breeders that train both working dogs for police and family protection dogs. If they say they train both then you have to ask if the family protection dogs are fostered with real families or brought into and raised their family home environment.\n\n\nAgain some breeder trainers will either give you a discount when you have them train the dog or even require you to have them train the dog. \n\n\nWork with them to figure out how you and your family can first bond with the young adult then start training. If you are nearby this trainer it is not as much of an issue.\n\n\nThe cost of training more advanced protection work should average out around $50 - $100 dollars an hour. Handler and helper included. Note: You should never, never I mean never be the helper for your dog. The helper is the person that has the bite sleeve on or bite suit on and gets bitten. \n\n![39588_151832494854987_2070875_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNSR3MrRFGFDRLEmvnRErZ4njpaMER6B7teqnPxBFCTSG/39588_151832494854987_2070875_n.jpg)\n\nIt is ok to work out a deal where you learn to become the helper for other dogs the trainer is working with but your dog should not be present. This can save you a lot of money, possibly cutting your cost in half.\nWorking with the right trainer \n\n\nThere are benefits to using a local trainer.\n\n\nIf you end up working with a trainer that is local you will be able to learn as your dog learns and it is a win, win situation for both. Having a local trainer makes it easier for the whole family to join in. Depending where you live there might not be a good enough local trainer near you. \n\n\nThe benefits of sending your dog to boarding school with a trainer is you will have a fully trained dog faster.\n\n![41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdw6aqCux9VHZJhSRmLpfU7tMPutqckD2yNkdKHTMhWgG/41331_462317720070_488133_n.jpg)\n\n\nIf you have a local sporting dog club near you this can help lower your overall cost. This would be a Schutzhund or French Ring type club. The cost of membership and training in these clubs can save you thousands of dollars. You can then choose to stop hear once your dog becomes titled but I do not recommend this.\n\n \nThe big difference in just having a sport trained dog and a real world protection dog is big. Sport dogs look at the sport as a game. They are conditioned to bite the sleeve and the suit not the person. So you will have to still work with a trainer to teach the dog to bite and protect in real world scenarios. This means working with hidden sleeves and special thinner bite suits that go under normal clothing.\n\n\nReal world scenarios are not just your home, yard or neighborhood. It should include parking lots, garages, café’s, strip malls, woods, parks, all kinds of everyday places. \n\n\nYou could spend $2,000 to $5,000 for this transition training. Compared to the $8,000 to $15,000 it would cost starting from scratch. \n\n\nEducating yourself on how to handle a protection dog\n\n\nThe best way to do this is join one of these clubs and make it a family activity. This has a number of added benefits for children as well. I am a firm believer in: research read and do then repeat. When you do this you and your family will truly have a great protection dog that is also part of the family. One that will give his or her life for your family.\n\n![47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmf7CP3GRGEKrSD1AYeG6f8Siqcm9kAXqqJUFaT6CoYnfK/47207_462329875070_6387241_n.jpg)\n \nLet’s look at the costs involved and ad up everything. I will average this all out you could end up paying more or less depending on actual costs.\n\n\nPuppy: $2,500\n\nBasic training $500\n\nSport Club Membership and classes per year: $500 Local and national on average.\n\nIf you go this route and spend 3 years in the club this comes out to be $1,500 not counting event fees for titling. \n\nProtection dog trainer Locally after your dog has been titled $100 hr, 1 hr a week 50 weeks a year: $5,000 \nNow if you go this route and start when the dog is 8 months old and train for 1 year you will need a min of 2 hrs a week. This could be broken up into 4, 30 minute sessions. $10,000 for the year. Then you can do just retraining every couple of months for an hour. \n\n![29257_430634160070_3161422_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmekF722rAdNgRreckuPsiCsGWjRD5gPncb7nMRwSYwZHP/29257_430634160070_3161422_n.jpg)\n\nIf you send your dog away to be trained on site, aka boarding school, you can have a fully trained dog in 4 to 8 months. This should run around $4,000 - $8,000. You will have to retrain, house training after.\n\n\nSo with puppy and sport club training the going the real world protection training route you are looking at around $8,500.\n\nPuppy with basic and real world training at around $13,000 Locally\n\nPuppy with basic and boarding school real world training of $15,000 for training around $18,000.\n\nYoung adult would be very similar with the difference paid for by a thousand or two dollars.\n\nSo I hope from these numbers give you an idea of how much it will cost you to have a great fully trained protection dog grow with your family. Another good thing is that these costs are not due all at once and are paid over time. 1-3 years. \n\n\nYou and your family will also learn how to handle the dog and find a new family activity to enjoy.\n\nLet me know what you think and you are welcome to check this article and more on the training site I am building.\n\nhttps://k9workingdogsworld.com/how-much-spend-on-protection-dog/",

body![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSD18nFcjd8XSLBsucV1a6pg7Vc8SSBokG9UmL7gQ1ZZT/image.png) My dog Drako # Not your average list for best protection dogs for families with children. # *A friend of mine asked me this question the other day. They have 2 children and are trying not to be the typical helicopter parents but still, want to protect their children.* __This is not your average list for best protection dogs families with children. It has a mix of intelligent protection breeds with some most people have not thought of. Not everyone wants that typical German Shepherd or Mastiff. Some do not have the time needed to train all the time. Others will enjoy training and finding a great activity for the whole family. There’s a little of both worlds here in this list.__ I will start with a quick list of some breeds and then go into detail about each one. As a reminder, every dog has its own individual character. As with any dog you choose you must remember it is an animal and can never be controlled 100% of the time. Good training for any dog is a must as is constantly reinforcing that training over and over. Only work with a trainer that uses positive reinforcement at this level. ### Harder trainers and the use of stronger corrections are only to be used by professional k9 trainers working with very strong drive so-called Alpha dogs. Like police or military dogs, Not family dogs. ### __These dogs are great with children and can be trained and handled by a novice owner with practice.__ ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYLe8Y6HEAjNnCWZH6MGuTvHXZoS3AZA7LCuPgvabvFTP/image.png) __German Shepherd__ ![Dobermanwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXBfc1F91tJtAHy92xs2PeEi4o89ePNCMVBh4f6sDC4Pa/Dobermanwiki2.jpg) __Doberman Pinscher__ ![standardpoodlewiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaZpxL6yg6TMUuEZyjhBEEQiVTJXncUsB5RV1EQEs9bPw/standardpoodlewiki2.jpg) __Giant / Standard Poodle__ ![GiantSchnauzerwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZcfkdjfrKj1ydqpcoNprLPaUVKuNRcaSEwRCFctgM9uv/GiantSchnauzerwiki2.jpg) __Giant Schnauzer__ ![puppyamericanbulldogwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaXNJxdsHugeprv19r1X8DUvtCWaLEUcMMp3osrk735sP/puppyamericanbulldogwiki2.jpg) __American Bulldog__ ![Dogoargentinowiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZECRpcUdJjQgg8nGuWbzzc9YCuFycdz5ihdbd57Kw6xh/Dogoargentinowiki2.jpg) __Dogo Argentino__ ![Eurasierwikipedia2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmW4Ppa3nDBkG4XqhxySt9rfbrZSvY5RuXXcZQb8izcPN5/Eurasierwikipedia2.jpg) __Eurasier__ What qualities to look for in a protection dog for the family __Loving Affectionate Nature__ All good protection dogs can be fearless and brave in a dangerous situation, but the best dogs are the ones that act like little puppies wagging and licking like crazy or lazy lap dogs when they are with their family. You want a dog that protects when it’s time to protect and loves when it is time to love. __Courage__ Your dog must be brave or what we call the confidence and drive needed to face danger and protect you and your family. 90% of the time a strong stance, growling, and barking will deter most threats. But when the time is needed to bite and protect the courage needs to be there. __Loyalty__ Most of us think dogs as pack animals. There are many dogs that seem overly friendly with strangers. You want to find a dog that will bond with you and your family. He or she will be either aloft or Nonchalant with strangers and let people pet him or her. This is the dog that will prefer to be by your side than anyone else’s. __Intelligence__ Good protection dogs must be trained and obedient, while able to respond to at the these basic of commands, such as sit, lay down, stay and heel. In addition, intelligence will help your dog be able to distinguish between threatening and merely stimuli that are out of the norm. This also will cut your training time down considerably and allow you to do more advanced protection training. __Territorial Instincts__ Dogs that strongly identify with their home as their pack’s territory and naturally want to protect it from intruders are obviously better suited for protection work than those who do not care if anyone comes or goes. #### Here are my 7 choices for best protection dogs for first time owners with children. These are listed as a guide and should not be taken as the end all be all. It is a list of breeds that I have had experience with and feel would make the best choices for newbies that will put in the effort to learn more and become a responsible protection dog owner. #### You will see the majority are considered very or extremely intelligent. Now I did list two mastiff breeds in this list. Mastiffs are not known to be very intelligent breeds. They are among the oldest type of dog breeds. I will talk more about these 2 breeds and why they made the list under each one. *It is also very important to slowly introduce and socialize any dog with its new family and never leave a dog with a baby unattended.* Young adults are great to bring into a family who has been somewhat trained and have been properly socialized by a professional trainer. If you get a puppy I recommend you get them and let them bond with the family for at least six months before sending them away to more formal training. You also should join a local club for the type of sports dog training you prefer. These are perfect for the novice first-time protection dog owner to hone their skills and have a great support group to help. I do not train my dogs for any of these one types of sport dog types such as Schutzhund or French Ring etc. I use a combination of these techniques geared more toward the real world and everyday modern living. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP7xguiT1FD2TcUzAHPmQ8ZYPa7MijaV6nHdx4AhtoQpL/image.png) __German Shepherd__ or GSD I must let you know I am extremely biased when it comes to owning and working a GSD. They are hands down my favorite breed. These dogs have been around since the late 1800s and you would have to have been living under a rock if you have never heard of them. (Or in the UK where they are called: the Alsatian. It’s a WWII thing.) I prefer a GSD from European bloodlines over American or Canadian bloodlines. The latter being bread more for show and looking pretty than protecting the family or temperament. More so the old Eastern Block countries Like East Germany and the Czech Republic are my first choice. But I must note most of the Czech bloodlines are not for beginners! Work with a reputable breeder to find the right bloodline for your level and your family. GSDs have long been valued for its intelligence, focus, loyalty and, tenacity. They can be easily trained and are willing to please their owner. They also work well in most family settings. Because of their intelligence protection, training and exercise are great for this breed. It keeps their brain stimulated and active, helping to prevent bad behaviors. ![adult-beautiful-canine-531036.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcYjx6eNvgZiVeMJNU1rxECcyWdBeooUdkj4EDSqduUre/adult-beautiful-canine-531036.jpg) __Doberman Pinscher__ My high school buddy had some of most beautiful and smart Dobies, I have ever seen. I love these dogs, not as much as the GSD but they do run a close second. I do not know a person alive that will not stop in fear when they first see a Doberman in front of them. Like the GSD they are very intelligent and make great family protection dogs. Their short coats minimize the shedding hassles unlike those of other breeds. Although the Doberman has a reputation as a sinister even devil-like and sharp dog, many families consider them one of the most loyal and loving of companions. Now “loyal” isn’t just a power word for “only likes his one owner.” It’s the real deal, a tremendous bond between dog and family, which lies at the core of the Doberman’s enduring popularity. A good Doberman for protecting the family and in general is a friendly and stable dog unless someone is threatening his or her family. ![michael-nunes-377066-unsplash.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP3bUyd7rSGGHSEDUWRgsJM3XzWQbFgDK9eX8q64VoBpA/michael-nunes-377066-unsplash.jpg) __Giant / Standard Poodle__ Many people do not think or know a Standard Poodle makes a great protection dog. They are one if not the most intelligent dog breeds out there. They have a strong bite and the weight behind it to stop most aggressors in their tracks. Plus you don’t have to worry too much about things like homeowner insurance issues, city breed bans etc. Now throw in the fact that they are the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds and these dogs can fit in 99% of family lifestyles. Try to stay away from the pure show lines they tend to be too nervous. They also need a lot of exercise and attention. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaoyz4iP6rLiAWovba9dp9h75jAFhznJMxD7WKpqcvDPo/image.png) (Source:){https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schnauzer} __Giant Schnauzer__ What a strong intelligent German breed with personality. There are very few limits to the abilities or capabilities of a Giant Schnauzer. You might have seen them trained for tracking, obedience, agility, herding and even carting, are among the dog sports them competing in. They can be a little stubborn. Originally they were used to drive cattle to market, these dogs will often excel as a police and protection dog. This is truly a gentle and loving family companion dog, the Giant Schnauzer’s favorite thing to do is being with the family he or she loves. It is very important to the success of living with a Giant Schnauzer include proper socialization, training, and getting plenty of physical and mental stimulation. These dogs will need all of these to become well-rounded and well mannered. ![Americanbulldogwikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP7ma8tDmReuHu44Kj4vWYrdy512nc2TA6dKxtkLdAp7r/Americanbulldogwikipedia.jpg) (Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bulldog] __American Bulldog__ Here is the first mastiff breed on the list. The American Bulldog makes for a great family dog that has that tough dog appearance few people will want to mess with. This is an active and strong working dog that is best suited to life on a farm or land with acreage, where he or she can assist with herding livestock and patrolling the property. With work, they can be well trained for bully breeds. As full out trained protection dogs they are not the best but for a family, their natural abilities and temperament will be all that is needed. They have no problem coming to the rescue of their family and biting a threat. At the same time, it is rare they will charge and bite someone just passing by. ![dogoargintinowikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdCAsrQrvgutQAC3UDyTC2Ef4uL3wQ2kQZhTgBjQ5Sksg/dogoargintinowikipedia.jpg) (Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bulldog] __Dogo Argentino__ This is a truly special breed and though the second mastiff breed on this list it is one of the best family dogs I have ever seen. Often confused for a tall pit-bull the Dogo was bread to be a family hunting dog. They can be trained for protection with work but again the natural temperament of this breed makes for a perfect match for those that want a good protection without all the hours and hours of training. I have seen a few Dogos trained in Schutzhund and they did quite well. They will bond with the whole family but become lifelong guardians of children and are even better than the Boxer breed. ![Eurasierwikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeV4tJoCFfWpsAguQyiLabN8Jc3hML24QoK9zMnBKUrgc/Eurasierwikipedia.jpg) (Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasier] __Eurasier__ This is not a dog for real protection work. Eurasiers are even-tempered, calm, dogs. They are however alert and watchful. They tend to be reserved towards strangers without being aggressive or timid. I have included this breed here for the true novice dog owner who does not want to learn more about protection dog training nor has the time. Eurasiers do form a strong bond with their families when their needs for constant close contact with its family are met. The Eurasier is a combination of Samoyed, the Keeshond, and Chow Chow. Eurasiers were bred as companion dogs; as such they do perfectly in an indoor family setting. Training should always be done through family members, not by dog trainers or handlers. Both the males and females can be quiet and calm indoors. While outdoors they become lively and enjoy running around. One thing, Eurasiers will rarely bark but when they do, they usually have a good reason.

They have 2 children and are trying not to be the typical helicopter parents but still, want to protect their children.*\n\n__This is not your average list for best protection dogs families with children. It has a mix of intelligent protection breeds with some most people have not thought of. Not everyone wants that typical German Shepherd or Mastiff. Some do not have the time needed to train all the time. Others will enjoy training and finding a great activity for the whole family. There’s a little of both worlds here in this list.__\n\n \n\nI will start with a quick list of some breeds and then go into detail about each one. As a reminder, every dog has its own individual character. As with any dog you choose you must remember it is an animal and can never be controlled 100% of the time. Good training for any dog is a must as is constantly reinforcing that training over and over. Only work with a trainer that uses positive reinforcement at this level.\n\n### Harder trainers and the use of stronger corrections are only to be used by professional k9 trainers working with very strong drive so-called Alpha dogs. Like police or military dogs, Not family dogs. ###\n\n__These dogs are great with children and can be trained and handled by a novice owner with practice.__\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYLe8Y6HEAjNnCWZH6MGuTvHXZoS3AZA7LCuPgvabvFTP/image.png)\n\n__German Shepherd__\n\n\n\n![Dobermanwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXBfc1F91tJtAHy92xs2PeEi4o89ePNCMVBh4f6sDC4Pa/Dobermanwiki2.jpg)\n\n\n__Doberman Pinscher__\n\n\n![standardpoodlewiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaZpxL6yg6TMUuEZyjhBEEQiVTJXncUsB5RV1EQEs9bPw/standardpoodlewiki2.jpg)\n\n__Giant / Standard Poodle__\n\n\n![GiantSchnauzerwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZcfkdjfrKj1ydqpcoNprLPaUVKuNRcaSEwRCFctgM9uv/GiantSchnauzerwiki2.jpg)\n\n__Giant Schnauzer__\n\n\n![puppyamericanbulldogwiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaXNJxdsHugeprv19r1X8DUvtCWaLEUcMMp3osrk735sP/puppyamericanbulldogwiki2.jpg)\n__American Bulldog__\n\n![Dogoargentinowiki2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZECRpcUdJjQgg8nGuWbzzc9YCuFycdz5ihdbd57Kw6xh/Dogoargentinowiki2.jpg)\n__Dogo Argentino__\n\n![Eurasierwikipedia2.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmW4Ppa3nDBkG4XqhxySt9rfbrZSvY5RuXXcZQb8izcPN5/Eurasierwikipedia2.jpg)\n__Eurasier__\n\nWhat qualities to look for in a protection dog for the family\n \n\n__Loving Affectionate Nature__\n\nAll good protection dogs can be fearless and brave in a dangerous situation, but the best dogs are the ones that act like little puppies wagging and licking like crazy or lazy lap dogs when they are with their family. You want a dog that protects when it’s time to protect and loves when it is time to love.\n\n \n\n__Courage__\n\nYour dog must be brave or what we call the confidence and drive needed to face danger and protect you and your family. 90% of the time a strong stance, growling, and barking will deter most threats. But when the time is needed to bite and protect the courage needs to be there.\n\n \n\n__Loyalty__ \n\nMost of us think dogs as pack animals. There are many dogs that seem overly friendly with strangers. You want to find a dog that will bond with you and your family. He or she will be either aloft or Nonchalant with strangers and let people pet him or her. This is the dog that will prefer to be by your side than anyone else’s.\n\n \n\n__Intelligence__\n\nGood protection dogs must be trained and obedient, while able to respond to at the these basic of commands, such as sit, lay down, stay and heel. In addition, intelligence will help your dog be able to distinguish between threatening and merely stimuli that are out of the norm. This also will cut your training time down considerably and allow you to do more advanced protection training.\n\n \n\n__Territorial Instincts__ \n\nDogs that strongly identify with their home as their pack’s territory and naturally want to protect it from intruders are obviously better suited for protection work than those who do not care if anyone comes or goes.\n\n \n\n#### Here are my 7 choices for best protection dogs for first time owners with children. These are listed as a guide and should not be taken as the end all be all. It is a list of breeds that I have had experience with and feel would make the best choices for newbies that will put in the effort to learn more and become a responsible protection dog owner. ####\n\nYou will see the majority are considered very or extremely intelligent. Now I did list two mastiff breeds in this list. Mastiffs are not known to be very intelligent breeds. They are among the oldest type of dog breeds. I will talk more about these 2 breeds and why they made the list under each one.\n\n*It is also very important to slowly introduce and socialize any dog with its new family and never leave a dog with a baby unattended.*\n\nYoung adults are great to bring into a family who has been somewhat trained and have been properly socialized by a professional trainer. If you get a puppy I recommend you get them and let them bond with the family for at least six months before sending them away to more formal training. You also should join a local club for the type of sports dog training you prefer. These are perfect for the novice first-time protection dog owner to hone their skills and have a great support group to help.\n\nI do not train my dogs for any of these one types of sport dog types such as Schutzhund or French Ring etc. I use a combination of these techniques geared more toward the real world and everyday modern living. \n\n \n\n \n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP7xguiT1FD2TcUzAHPmQ8ZYPa7MijaV6nHdx4AhtoQpL/image.png)\n__German Shepherd__ or GSD\n\nI must let you know I am extremely biased when it comes to owning and working a GSD. Work with a reputable breeder to find the right bloodline for your level and your family.\n\nGSDs have long been valued for its intelligence, focus, loyalty and, tenacity. They can be easily trained and are willing to please their owner. They also work well in most family settings. Because of their intelligence protection, training and exercise are great for this breed. It keeps their brain stimulated and active, helping to prevent bad behaviors.\n\n \n\n \n![adult-beautiful-canine-531036.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcYjx6eNvgZiVeMJNU1rxECcyWdBeooUdkj4EDSqduUre/adult-beautiful-canine-531036.jpg)\n__Doberman Pinscher__\n\nMy high school buddy had some of most beautiful and smart Dobies, I have ever seen. I love these dogs, not as much as the GSD but they do run a close second. I do not know a person alive that will not stop in fear when they first see a Doberman in front of them. Like the GSD they are very intelligent and make great family protection dogs. Their short coats minimize the shedding hassles unlike those of other breeds.\n\nAlthough the Doberman has a reputation as a sinister even devil-like and sharp dog, many families consider them one of the most loyal and loving of companions. Now “loyal” isn’t just a power word for “only likes his one owner.” It’s the real deal, a tremendous bond between dog and family, which lies at the core of the Doberman’s enduring popularity. A good Doberman for protecting the family and in general is a friendly and stable dog unless someone is threatening his or her family.\n\n \n![michael-nunes-377066-unsplash.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP3bUyd7rSGGHSEDUWRgsJM3XzWQbFgDK9eX8q64VoBpA/michael-nunes-377066-unsplash.jpg)\n\n__Giant / Standard Poodle__\n\nMany people do not think or know a Standard Poodle makes a great protection dog. They are one if not the most intelligent dog breeds out there. They have a strong bite and the weight behind it to stop most aggressors in their tracks. Plus you don’t have to worry too much about things like homeowner insurance issues, city breed bans etc.\n\nNow throw in the fact that they are the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds and these dogs can fit in 99% of family lifestyles. Try to stay away from the pure show lines they tend to be too nervous. They also need a lot of exercise and attention.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaoyz4iP6rLiAWovba9dp9h75jAFhznJMxD7WKpqcvDPo/image.png)\n(Source:){https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schnauzer}\n\n__Giant Schnauzer__\n\nWhat a strong intelligent German breed with personality. There are very few limits to the abilities or capabilities of a Giant Schnauzer. You might have seen them trained for tracking, obedience, agility, herding and even carting, are among the dog sports them competing in. They can be a little stubborn.\n\nOriginally they were used to drive cattle to market, these dogs will often excel as a police and protection dog. This is truly a gentle and loving family companion dog, the Giant Schnauzer’s favorite thing to do is being with the family he or she loves.\n\nIt is very important to the success of living with a Giant Schnauzer include proper socialization, training, and getting plenty of physical and mental stimulation. These dogs will need all of these to become well-rounded and well mannered.\n\n ![Americanbulldogwikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmP7ma8tDmReuHu44Kj4vWYrdy512nc2TA6dKxtkLdAp7r/Americanbulldogwikipedia.jpg)\n(Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bulldog]\n\n\n__American Bulldog__\n\nHere is the first mastiff breed on the list. The American Bulldog makes for a great family dog that has that tough dog appearance few people will want to mess with. This is an active and strong working dog that is best suited to life on a farm or land with acreage, where he or she can assist with herding livestock and patrolling the property.\n\nWith work, they can be well trained for bully breeds. As full out trained protection dogs they are not the best but for a family, their natural abilities and temperament will be all that is needed. They have no problem coming to the rescue of their family and biting a threat. At the same time, it is rare they will charge and bite someone just passing by.\n\n\n![dogoargintinowikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdCAsrQrvgutQAC3UDyTC2Ef4uL3wQ2kQZhTgBjQ5Sksg/dogoargintinowikipedia.jpg)\n(Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bulldog]\n\n__Dogo Argentino__\n\nThis is a truly special breed and though the second mastiff breed on this list it is one of the best family dogs I have ever seen. Often confused for a tall pit-bull the Dogo was bread to be a family hunting dog.\n\nThey can be trained for protection with work but again the natural temperament of this breed makes for a perfect match for those that want a good protection without all the hours and hours of training. I have seen a few Dogos trained in Schutzhund and they did quite well.\n\nThey will bond with the whole family but become lifelong guardians of children and are even better than the Boxer breed.\n\n\n![Eurasierwikipedia.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeV4tJoCFfWpsAguQyiLabN8Jc3hML24QoK9zMnBKUrgc/Eurasierwikipedia.jpg)\n(Source:)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasier]\n\n__Eurasier__\n\nThis is not a dog for real protection work. Eurasiers are even-tempered, calm, dogs. They are however alert and watchful. They tend to be reserved towards strangers without being aggressive or timid.\n\nI have included this breed here for the true novice dog owner who does not want to learn more about protection dog training nor has the time. Eurasiers do form a strong bond with their families when their needs for constant close contact with its family are met. The Eurasier is a combination of Samoyed, the Keeshond, and Chow Chow.\n\nEurasiers were bred as companion dogs; as such they do perfectly in an indoor family setting.
