Over the course of our lives, we repeatedly enter into relationships that don’t always work out. Sometimes they fail amicably, sometimes painfully. But, after a period of healing, whether complete or incomplete, we find ourselves taking romantic risks again, entering a new relationship that could result in us being hurt further down the road.\n\nRisk Versus Trust\n\nEach time we engage with another person, striking up a conversation with them on the bus or in a coffee shop, each time we ask someone on a date or agree to go on a date if they ask us, each time we agree to a more “serious” and committed relationship, each time we decide to move in with somebody, each time we get engaged, each time we say, “I do” at the altar – each one of those times we are taking a risk. Each time we are risking painful failure and rejection in the near or far future.\n\nSo why and how do we keep doing this over and over? The “why” is because we’re human beings with an innate need for love and companionship. The “how” is because we take a leap of faith in deciding to trust the other person in the relationship.\n\nman-offeringThat trust comes from within us, not from the other person, though it is certainly affected by their behaviour, by the “vibe” we get from them. But a leap of faith is a leap – there is no bridge to cross – and the courage to leap comes from within us, not from the other.\n\nThink of standing on the verge of a cliff, looking down at a deep abyss – who knows how deep? – and wondering whether you can jump across to the other side. You use your best judgment, of course.\n\nYou know yourself – how strong your legs are, how far you can jump, how frightened you are of heights. And you know about the other, outside factors you can’t control, like how slippery or slanted the far side of the pit is, or how bright the light is so you can see where you will be landing.\n\nOn the Edge of a Potential Relationship\n\nNow alter the idea. You’re standing on the metaphorical edge of an abyss – a potential relationship. You take account of all the things you know about yourself – how brave you are, whether you’ve been hurt in previous relationships, and how badly, how lonely you are, how much you are attracted to this other person. And you get the best sense of them you can, of whether they seem attracted to you and whether they are a kind, gentle, loving person rather than a jerk out to play with your feelings.\n\nYou combine all this information, which is never quite enough to know for sure, and you take that leap of faith. You decide to trust this other person and you make your move – you ask them out on a date, or say yes to their request for a date, you agree to move in with them, or marry them, or whatever.\n\nI’ve spent so much time going through this to illustrate what a tricky thing trust is.\n\nTrust is a decision you make about the relationship, or a decision the other person makes about you. To answer this reader’s question, “Why can’t she trust me?” is not a simple exercise.\n\n\n \nSince trust is a complex thing, with many different ingredients, most of which are out of your control, there is no easy answer. She has to decide to trust you. There is no way for you to control her decision. Most of the decision to make that trusting leap of faith comes from her own mind and heart, based on what has happened to her in previous relationships. If she’s been burned repeatedly, or had her heart badly broken, she has to recover from that herself and decide to trust romance yet again.\n\nYou can assure her and reassure her that your intentions are true and honest, but that only goes so far. She may have believed very strongly in those other relationships, the ones that failed so painfully.\n\nThe (small) Part Under Your Control\n\nThe only part of this situation that is under your control is a small part – how you come across as a potential partner. Don’t lie to her. Be honest about what you think and feel. Also be honest about what you want from your relationship, but don’t be pushy and overwhelming. Be considerate of her feelings. If you act honestly and honorably, you give yourself the very best chance of coming across as trustworthy. And that’s about all you can do.\n\nThe rest is up to her. Though it may drive you crazy, you have to be patient and wait for her to decide she can trust you. Only she can make that leap across the abyss, even if you are standing on the other side, waiting with open arms, assuring her it is safe. There’s still an element of risk, and only she can decide if it’s worth it.\n\nno-trustSo, like so many other aspects of love and relationships, the best thing for you to do if she can’t trust you is to focus on yourself and give her time to change.\n\nBy focusing on yourself, I mean taking care about how you treat her – honestly and honourably. Communicate clearly about what you want. Let her know you are hopeful that the relationship can move forward.\n\nA Time to Back Off\n\nBut once you’ve let her know what you want, back off and let her have time to think. Don’t let yourself get demanding or pushy, no matter how impatient you are – you are likely to come across as controlling or smothering, and this will just drive her away for sure. Don’t argue with her and try to browbeat her into trusting you. Your relationship – if it progresses – will be much stronger if it is built on a foundation of genuine trust rather than if you pushed her into it too early.\n\nAs a final note, you need to decide for yourself how long you are willing to wait for her to trust you. This is a two-way street. But decide for yourself and keep the decision private for now. Check in with yourself honestly about how you feel. Don’t issue an ultimatum to her, threatening to leave if she doesn’t change her mind.\n\nGive her the dignity of making her own decision, and give yourself that dignity, too. In the end, if she can’t ever decide to trust you, it’s time for you to trust yourself and go find somebody else.",

You don’t know if what you’re saying will actually be the nail in the metaphorical coffin.\n\nSo, what are the ten things you should never say to your ex?\n\n1.”I Miss You”\nChances are your ex was the one who ended it with you, and now you want him or her back in your life. But as of right now, let’s face it:  your ex doesn’t miss you. They’re happy that you two have moved on.\n\n\nBy telling your ex that you miss them, you’re letting them know that you want to get back together. While you may think this is a nice gesture that will melt your ex’s heart, it’s psychologically proven that saying “I miss you” to your ex will only push them further away.\n\n2“I Still Love You”\nOr anything along the lines of this is off limits. Again, just like “I miss you,” you’re showing too much interest right now.\n\n\nWhat you need to be doing is pushing your ex further away — not saying that you still love them or asking if they still love you. This lack of interest that you should be portraying to your ex is key to making them forget about the bad aspects of your relationship (and, as a result, they’ll begin to miss you).\n\n3“Can We At Least Be Friends?”\nThink about this for a minute.  Right now, do you think this is a good idea? You don’t want to be friends with your ex right now. You want to be back in a romantic relationship with him or her.\n\nEven if, right now, your ex does agree to hang out with you “as friends,” all you’ll be thinking is how much you want them back. This just isn’t a good idea.\n\n\n4“I’m Lonely and Depressed, Haven’t Eaten in Days!”\nPlaying the sympathy card is definitely not going to do you any good. You need to show your ex that you’re a “high value” individual — that you won’t have any trouble finding a new boyfriend or girlfriend if necessary.\n\nBy saying you’re lonely and depressed (or anything along the lines of that) you’re indicating the complete opposite, and showing your ex that you’re lost without them. You need to stop communicating with your ex for now and get yourself back on track before you do anything else.\n\n\n5“I Never Should Have Dated You”\nA lot of people will lash out in anger at their ex for making them feel abandoned. Again, this won’t help you win back their love or repair your relationship.\n\nIf you do feel angry at your ex (for whatever reason), take it out on something else. Go exercise (a great way to relieve anger) or engage in another activity until the feeling subsides.\n\n\n6“I’m Dating Someone New and They’re Better Than You”\nTrying to elicit a jealous response from your ex in this manner will only make them resent you.\n\nYes, while a little bit of jealousy can actually be a useful tool and help you get your ex back, you have to do so “under the radar.”\n\nIf your ex believes you’re going out of your way to make them jealous, it will almost certainly make them angry and make the situation even worse.\n\n7“I’m Deleting You From Facebook and From My Life”\nBy saying this, you’re telling your ex that the very thought of them is causing so much disturbance that you want to just eliminate them from your life. While isolating yourself from your ex after the breakup is very important, you shouldn’t be making it obvious that you’re doing so.\n\nRemember: you need to show your ex that you don’t need them and that you’re not fazed by the breakup. If you’re truly unfazed by the breakup, then why would you bother deleting your ex from Facebook?\n\nIf you really can’t stand seeing your ex’s status updates on Facebook, simply hide their updates from your news feed.\n\n8“I Hated How You Treated Me”\nAs I mentioned earlier, anger and confrontation is a recipe for disaster at this point. If you truly do feel as though your ex treated you poorly, then there’s no reason to get back together with him or her.\n\nAnd if you’re just saying this in an attempt to elicit an emotional response, it’s not a good idea. Avoid making your ex angry or causing resentment whenever possible.\n\n9“You Broke My Heart”\nAgain, letting your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend know that they had this effect on you is like giving them the keys to your life. If you say this to your ex, you’re essentially throwing away any chance of being seen by your ex as a “high value” person who has ample alternative romantic options available.\n\n10“Never Talk to Me Ever Again!”\nAgain, if you say this to your ex and they have no interest in re-kindling your romance, you run the risk of actually having that happen.\n\nAfter your break up, you shouldn’t be talking to your ex at all for a certain period of time, but this isn’t the way to initiate a period of radio silence.\n\nInstead, try to be polite and cordial by saying something like, ”You’re right, some time apart might be a good idea. I think we should avoid talking to one another for a little while.”\n\nBy no means is the list above a comprehensive run-down on all the things you shouldn’t be saying to your ex. It’s simply ten of the most common things that people say to an ex that end up damaging their chances of ever repairing things.\n\nSo, if you want to mend your broken relationship and fix things with your ex, avoid uttering the above sayings.  In the long run, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of heartaches.",

And let me tell you now: it did not end well.\n\nBarbu’s girlfriend fled the room when she realized what was happening, but Barbu chased her down and beat her, pulling her down the corridor by her hair. He then returned to the room where his girlfriend’s client had locked himself in and kicked down the door. The client became the new target of Barbu’s wrath as Barbu beat him to a pulp.\n\n\nPerhaps the most bizarre part? Between the beatings, Barbu took smoking breaks and even paused to kiss the receptionist’s hand, though he refused to let her leave the premises.\n\n\nAltogether, Barbu spent about an hour terrorizing the massage parlor, at times turning his rage toward random employees and charging toward them with his knife. One security guard attempted to disable him but was foiled when Barbu bit him on the bicep.\n\nEventually, the female owner of the parlor managed to disarm him by pushing his thumb back so that he dropped the knife. Without his weapon to protect him, the employees piled on top of him so he was unable to move and cause further harm.\n\nBarbu has now been jailed for 32 months on account of causing actual bodily harm, possessing a bladed article, common assault and criminal damage. He also faced automatic deportation to Romania, though he allegedly prefers this and wants to serve his sentence in his home country.\n\nOh, and since the incident, which happened a year ago, he’s managed to get married to a different woman and have a kid.
