| body | The Road to the Border The horsebox door slammed shut. Just like that, Nico and Neila were gone. I didn’t step outside. Didn’t watch them leave. What would have been the point? It wasn’t anger that sat with me—it was clarity. The hag had played her game well. She had forced my hand with the horses, and now she was circling Jeb and Charlie. That was the line. Losing the horses had been hard, but I could justify it. They’d be fine where they were going. Jeb and Charlie, though? That was different. They weren’t just animals I cared for—they were family and, her intentions were far more deadly. The decision wasn’t made out of pride or stubbornness. It was survival. I had lived this way for 18 years, refining what the military first taught me. Now, I’d use every skill I had to disappear. The first goal was simple: 100 kilometres to the Lithuanian border, through forest and country tracks. I gave myself three days—40km on the first, then 30 per day after that. It was winter. That was both an advantage and a risk. The first stretch was easy enough. Hard-packed snow made for solid footing, and the cold wasn’t biting yet. Jeb trotted ahead, alert but relaxed. Charlie, legs too short to keep pace for long, took his usual place draped over my shoulders like a living scarf. I moved fast, keeping the rhythm I’d drilled into myself over years of walking. Breaks were short—just enough to sip from the thermos, to let the dogs rest without cooling down too much. But by nightfall, the world shifted. A thaw rolled in overnight. The change was sudden, the way winter sometimes plays tricks. Snow turned to slush, ice to sucking mud. Everything wet, everything seeping. My boots, my gloves, my pack. The kind of wet that doesn’t just chill you—it steals heat from the inside out. By morning, the world was a swamp. I pushed on, but every step was a battle. Waterlogged ground clung to my boots. Trees dripped constantly, sending icy trickles down my collar. The damp had weight—it slowed movement, sapped energy. And then, just as suddenly, winter came back. The temperature plunged. Water turned solid mid-step. The slush that had soaked everything now locked into place, freezing stiff fabric, turning boots into ice blocks. My gloves cracked as I flexed my fingers. It was dangerous in a different way now. Slippery, brittle. Any fall could end in a twisted ankle, or worse, hypothermia if I stayed down too long. I kept moving, pacing myself, focusing on balance. That was when I found the house. A crumbling shell, long abandoned. No roof, but four walls still standing. Enough of a break from the wind to set up a fire, dry out what I could. It should have been a quiet night. It wasn’t. The dogs came at dusk. Five of them, lean and moving as a pack. Not wild, but not tame either—village dogs that had learned to fend for themselves. Their movements were measured, confident. They weren’t charging, but they weren’t afraid. Jeb stiffened, a growl rumbling low in his throat. Charlie pressed against my leg, small but aware. The pack spread out, cutting off escape. They weren’t attacking—not yet. They were testing. Weighing their odds. I squared up. Took a step forward. My voice cut through the frozen air, sharp and unwavering. “Fuck off.” For a moment, they hesitated. Five pairs of eyes locked onto mine. A silent decision was made. And then, just like that, they turned and melted into the night. Jeb let out a breathy huff. Charlie leaned harder against my leg. I exhaled too, rolling my shoulders, shaking off the tension. We stayed in that ruin for the night. Not out of fear—just practicality. A fire, some warmth, a moment to recalibrate. By morning, we were moving again. The border was still ahead, the road still long. But we weren’t stopping. Not now. Not ever. By the third day, my body felt like it had been used for football practice. My left hip ached, stiff from the cold and the miles. My phone was dead, leaving me to rely on scribbled notes for navigation. I came across a lumberjack camp—three caravans, heavy-duty machinery, and the hum of generators. As I approached, the stress of the earlier dog confrontation must have still been sitting with Jeb because he suddenly turned on Charlie. No cause. No warning. Maybe exhaustion, maybe lingering tension. But once attacked, Charlie fought back. He was smaller, but he wasn’t going down without a fight. I lunged between them, kicking Charlie away while I grabbed Jeb and tethered him to a tree. Charlie was still snarling, not ready to let it go, but I had to separate them. I needed to charge my phone. In broken Russian, I asked one of the lumberjacks, and he motioned toward the back of his van. As the battery climbed back to life, I knelt beside Charlie and checked the damage. His little body trembled, his breathing shallow, his eyes darting between me and Jeb. His neck was raw where Jeb had latched onto him. The punctures weren’t deep, but the bruising already ran deep under his fur. I worked quickly, my fingers numb as I cleaned and patched him up. Jeb sat, ears flicking, watching. The boss of the lumberjacks handed me a pack of MREs and some frikadellen for the dogs. He also gave me five litres of red diesel in an old antifreeze container, pointing out a good spot where I could camp safely away from their machinery. That night, I built my fire nestled in the V of a fallen tree, stuffing the space that was to be my bed between the branches with twigs and dead leaves still clinging to their stems. It was a good shelter, just big enough for Jeb and me. Charlie would sleep on my chest, wrapped in my heavy leather coat, and Jeb would stay tethered—just in case. The fire burned steady, throwing flickering light against the damp night. I cooked the MRE and ate while Jeb and Charlie shared the last of their dog biscuits, softened with water from the Kelly kettle. Jeb kept his distance, quiet now, as if he knew he’d taken things too far. Charlie barely moved, exhaustion and pain leaving him limp against me. The machines worked through the night, their rumble threading through my sleep, but I barely stirred. Jeb stayed where he was, and Charlie never left my side. By morning, the fire had burned down to embers. I packed up, shifted Charlie onto my shoulders, and released Jeb. He stuck close, subdued now. My navigation had been right. A left turn. One final road. I'd dropped off what was left of the diesel and started the walk. The border was ahead. The Final Stretch The road stretched ahead, a promise of asphalt and civilisation not far beyond. As I walked, I passed a health spa, its pristine buildings standing in stark contrast to the wilderness I had been navigating. The idea of fresh water—or even the unlikely offer of a coffee—crossed my mind, but the locked gates and silence told me I wasn’t welcome. Pressing on, I turned down a track and was met by another pack of dogs. This time, they were different—farm dogs, not strays. They barked noisily from a distance, holding their ground near a barn, but they didn’t advance. They weren’t a threat, just a warning. And then, at last, it was there—the Lithuanian border. Not fifty metres beyond it, the sweet sight of asphalt roads. I walked along the tarmac, exhaustion setting in, but the knowledge that I was finally out of Latvia gave me a second wind. Only thirty kilometres to civilisation. And hopefully, somewhere to stay. Barely five kilometres down the road, I spotted a small factory unit. It wasn’t much, but it was a place to rest, to take a breath and let the reality sink in—we had made it. At the far end of the sheds, a lorry sat idling, the engine’s steady hum breaking the silence. I approached the driver, Charlie still draped over my shoulders, and asked in broken Russian, “Heading to town? Any chance of a lift?” He shook his head. “Riga,” he replied. The last place I wanted to be. Disappointed, I turned back toward Jeb and my gear. But then, the driver called me back, gesturing toward another man. A brief exchange in Lithuanian, a nod in my direction. “This guy,” the driver said, “he’ll take you to town.” <center>Posted using [SteemMobile](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steempro.mobile)</center> |

"body": "The Road to the Border\n\nThe horsebox door slammed shut. Just like that, Nico and Neila were gone.\nI didn’t step outside. Didn’t watch them leave.\nWhat would have been the point?\n\nIt wasn’t anger that sat with me—it was clarity. The hag had played her game well. She had forced my hand with the horses, and now she was circling Jeb and Charlie.\n\nThat was the line.\n\nLosing the horses had been hard, but I could justify it. They’d be fine where they were going. Jeb and Charlie, though? That was different. They weren’t just animals I cared for—they were family and, her intentions were far more deadly.\n\nThe decision wasn’t made out of pride or stubbornness. It was survival. I had lived this way for 18 years, refining what the military first taught me. Now, I’d use every skill I had to disappear.\n\nThe first goal was simple: 100 kilometres to the Lithuanian border, through forest and country tracks. I gave myself three days—40km on the first, then 30 per day after that.\n\nIt was winter. That was both an advantage and a risk.\n\nThe first stretch was easy enough. Hard-packed snow made for solid footing, and the cold wasn’t biting yet. Jeb trotted ahead, alert but relaxed. Charlie, legs too short to keep pace for long, took his usual place draped over my shoulders like a living scarf.\n\nI moved fast, keeping the rhythm I’d drilled into myself over years of walking. Breaks were short—just enough to sip from the thermos, to let the dogs rest without cooling down too much.\n\nBut by nightfall, the world shifted.\n\nA thaw rolled in overnight. The change was sudden, the way winter sometimes plays tricks. Snow turned to slush, ice to sucking mud. Everything wet, everything seeping. My boots, my gloves, my pack. The kind of wet that doesn’t just chill you—it steals heat from the inside out.\n\nBy morning, the world was a swamp. I pushed on, but every step was a battle. Waterlogged ground clung to my boots. Trees dripped constantly, sending icy trickles down my collar. The damp had weight—it slowed movement, sapped energy.\n\nAnd then, just as suddenly, winter came back.\n\nThe temperature plunged. Water turned solid mid-step. The slush that had soaked everything now locked into place, freezing stiff fabric, turning boots into ice blocks. My gloves cracked as I flexed my fingers.\n\nIt was dangerous in a different way now. Slippery, brittle. Any fall could end in a twisted ankle, or worse, hypothermia if I stayed down too long. I kept moving, pacing myself, focusing on balance.\n\nThat was when I found the house.\n\nA crumbling shell, long abandoned. No roof, but four walls still standing. Enough of a break from the wind to set up a fire, dry out what I could.\n\nIt should have been a quiet night. It wasn’t.\n\nThe dogs came at dusk.\n\nFive of them, lean and moving as a pack. Not wild, but not tame either—village dogs that had learned to fend for themselves. Their movements were measured, confident. They weren’t charging, but they weren’t afraid.\n\nJeb stiffened, a growl rumbling low in his throat. Charlie pressed against my leg, small but aware.\n\nThe pack spread out, cutting off escape. They weren’t attacking—not yet. They were testing. Weighing their odds.\n\nI squared up. Took a step forward. My voice cut through the frozen air, sharp and unwavering.\n\n“Fuck off.”\n\nFor a moment, they hesitated. Five pairs of eyes locked onto mine. A silent decision was made.\n\nAnd then, just like that, they turned and melted into the night.\n\nJeb let out a breathy huff. Charlie leaned harder against my leg. I exhaled too, rolling my shoulders, shaking off the tension.\n\nWe stayed in that ruin for the night. Not out of fear—just practicality. A fire, some warmth, a moment to recalibrate.\n\nBy morning, we were moving again. The border was still ahead, the road still long. But we weren’t stopping. Not now.\n\nNot ever.\n\n\nBy the third day, my body felt like it had been used for football practice. My left hip ached, stiff from the cold and the miles. My phone was dead, leaving me to rely on scribbled notes for navigation.\n\nI came across a lumberjack camp—three caravans, heavy-duty machinery, and the hum of generators. As I approached, the stress of the earlier dog confrontation must have still been sitting with Jeb because he suddenly turned on Charlie. No cause. No warning. Maybe exhaustion, maybe lingering tension. But once attacked, Charlie fought back. He was smaller, but he wasn’t going down without a fight.\n\nI lunged between them, kicking Charlie away while I grabbed Jeb and tethered him to a tree. Charlie was still snarling, not ready to let it go, but I had to separate them.\n\nI needed to charge my phone. I worked quickly, my fingers numb as I cleaned and patched him up. | body | On January 6th, I walked out of Latvia with Jeb and Charlie,my two canine companions, leaving everything behind except what I could carry. Less than €50 in my pocket, a Kelly kettle, a bag of dog food, two bowls, half a kilo of coffee, and the clothes on my back. I wasn’t running from hardship—I’d known that all my life. I wasn’t running from the winter, though it made every step harder. I was running because I had no other choice. The old c*nt had taken Nico and Neila, my Konik horses, from me, and I had no doubt she’d follow through with her threat to kill Jeb and Charlie. I wasn’t going to wait around to watch it happen. I walked. Through the forests, through the cold, through the silence of a world that didn’t care whether I made it or not. Nights were spent under trees, wrapped in whatever heat I could muster, my two dogs pressed close for warmth. I stopped in villages to buy just enough food to keep us going, then kept moving. The real test came when the weather turned. One night, the sudden thaw soaked everything, only for winter to return the next day. Wet gear in sub-zero temperatures is a slow death, so I pushed on until I reached the first proper town in Lithuania and checked into a hotel. It was there I discovered my passport was missing—probably lost somewhere in the forests behind me. I saw it as just another challenge, something to be solved, not feared. I checked the UK government website and applied for an emergency passport. That meant an unwanted diversion—300km in the wrong direction to Vilnius—but there was no way forward without it. Getting through the Suwałki Gap into Poland would have been impossible without papers. Even if I’d made it through, I’d never have gotten on a ferry without identification. The detour was unavoidable. A Journey of Helpers, Not Detractors At no point in this journey did I feel lost or alone, because two people, Janet and Dave, were with me every step of the way. They supported me mentally, checking in to make sure I was still moving forward. And when I needed help that required money—paying for the passport, a hotel to recover in, food to keep going—they never questioned it. They just helped. Jeb and Charlie weren’t just companions on this journey. They were the reason for it. I could survive anything—I’d done it for years—but their survival was paramount. Every decision, every step, every sacrifice revolved around them. Losing Nico and Neila had been out of my hands, but I wasn’t going to let that happen again. In Vilnius, I found a hotel unlike any other—a bohemian place that welcomed us as if we belonged there. A taxi driver, without hesitation, let Jeb and Charlie ride with me. The people I met weren’t obstacles; they were helpers, proving that kindness still existed. Picking Up Speed With the passport in hand, everything changed. Borders were no longer a looming threat, and the journey gained momentum. A €30 train ticket took us to Warsaw—dogs included. From there, I booked a ticket to the ferry port in Holland, unaware that the hardest part of the trip was still ahead. The Polish leg of the journey started well. Then, halfway through, everything turned to shit. I needed to change carriages, and that’s when the ticket inspector lost it. Screaming at me that two dogs weren’t allowed, that I had to get rid of one—as if they were luggage. I refused. The threats started: if I didn’t comply, I’d be thrown off the train in the middle of nowhere, in the dark, in the cold. For the rest of the journey to the German border, I sat with the weight of those threats pressing down, knowing that in an instant, everything could fall apart. Germany: A Shift in the Journey Crossing into Germany, the hostility vanished. The train to Berlin was packed with early shift workers, but no one paid us much attention. Some acknowledged us with a nod; others were glued to their phones. The danger was gone. A series of short hops across Berlin led to the final train towards the ferry. This time, I could finally rest—Charlie curled up on my lap, Jeb lying between my legs. It wasn’t comfortable, but it was rest. Holland...another world Sometime in the early hours, I was woken by the guard. Fear crept back in—was I about to be thrown off again? “Is your dog dangerous?” he asked, pointing at Jeb. I explained that the muzzle was for show, to reassure other passengers, but that Jeb was friendly. The response floored me. “You should take it off so he can be comfortable and enjoy his journey. It's illegal to muzzle dogs.” Then, for the next ten minutes, the guard and his assistant played with Jeb, scratching his ears, giving him attention. Just like that, the weight of the last 24 hours lifted. The Final Stretch At the ferry terminal, there were a few issues—mostly caused by other passengers being idiots—but the relief of reaching this final stage was immense. Janet and Dave had arranged my ferry ticket, removing one last obstacle. I walked the long gangway onto the Stena ferry and, for the first time in weeks, luxury. I slept. Docking in the UK, I passed border control without issue and was immediately overwhelmed by how welcoming the staff were. No hostility, no cold bureaucracy—just kindness. I walked into town and found the Salvation Army. For the first time in a long time, I felt rescued. The Final Gut Punch The next days were overwhelming. Kindness poured in from complete strangers: Nina, Max, Debbie, Mark, Sarah and Clive, Alison, Bob and his wife, Ruth and Jim, Amy, Jade, Wendy. I was home. Safe. Jeb and Charlie were safe. The Salvation Army and the Royal British Legion were incredible—beyond incredible. But then came the gut punch. The benefits officer. I didn’t demand help, but I needed it. I had nothing. The only thing keeping me going at that point was the generosity of strangers. The officer discarded me. I wasn’t expecting special treatment, but I also wasn’t expecting to be treated like I didn’t exist. I wasn’t a person to him—I was a case number that didn’t fit into any of his neat little boxes. And then the final blow came from somewhere else: “The only way you’ll get support is if you give up Jeb and Charlie.” I fell apart. Eighteen years of resilience and self-reliance—gone, in an instant. That was the moment I wanted to throw everything away. Not just the benefits system. Not just the bureaucracy. Everything. My rejection of the kindness if the British Legion was a knee-jerk reaction to someone else's demand. Suddenly I didn’t want charity from anyone if the price was giving up the two beings who meant everything. For the first time since arriving back to my land of birth, I felt like walking away. Away from the safety I’d found. Away from this place that had started to feel like home. Anger. Hatred. I was beyond ballistic but all that came out was tears and despair. And Yet… I’m still here. Not because of the system. Not because of government support. But because of the kindness of strangers—the people who saw me as human when the bureaucracy didn’t. I don’t know what comes next. But one thing is certain: I didn’t walk across Europe to lose my dogs now. Footnote: I’m certain that, in Latvia, there are two toxic people lurking in the shadows reading this, revelling in the worst parts of this journey, proud of what they did to me. So to them, I say this—fuck you, fuck the air you breathe, and fuck the ground you walk on. Wherever this path leads me, it’s far from you and the filth you wallow in. <center>Posted using [SteemMobile](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steempro.mobile)</center> |

So to them, I say this—fuck you, fuck the air you breathe, and fuck the ground you walk on. Wherever this path leads me, it’s far from you and the filth you wallow in.\n\n<center>Posted using [SteemMobile](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steempro.mobile)</center>",

| body | Just looking back over my posts and came across this brief chat. I'm still on the road, still loving the simple life, still enjoying it and with no intention of returning to the 'real' world :-) Have had a lot happen in the last two years and, just getting ready to share it here. As for ambition, you tell me it's ok to have it, well, I think I do, it's just different from what most people have. |

| body | It's been (quite)a while since my last post and, no,I've not joined the ranks of people that lose interest or, simply give up, no, I've been going through an eventful few months. Firstly needing to deal with caring for one of my two bull calves who, sadly died. Then finding out that the land that I was living on didn't belong to the person that had given me permission! (That happened when the owner turned up to heck the land, prior to putting it on the market). Then, moving to a new home, which involved dismantling my vardo then rebuilding at the other end (I'm in the process off puling it apart again, during winter! So that I can rebuild... I like my challenges to be tough LOL. Not long after Xmas I had two mini strokes, a diagnosis of a cancer after a large tumour was found behind my eye and have been diagnosed with high blood pressure (which I question, as I've never suffered from that, ever!) However, you now find me sitting in my temporary shelter, the porch of a friend's house, no heating but good shelter from the wind, and, free electricity!!! The vardo is half dismantled (I gave up today because of the wind and rain), I need to raise funds for materials for the rebuild (more on that in another post), and pushing forward with the training of bil my bull who will become my horse and pull our home round as I start my adventures (or, have I already started?) So, please forgive me for disappearing for so long, I'm back and, with a purpose!!! Posted using [Partiko Android](https://partiko.app/referral/kepi) |

| body | I’ve been away a while. But, in my defence, I’ve been busy! Three weeks ago, I went out and collected two bull calves, not the calves that I had arranged to collect, but that’s another story. All the same, I came back with two young lads, one three days old, the other seven days old. Now, a lot of people would say that they were too young to be taken from their mothers, but the fact is that they already had, and they were destined to become meat. And, on the third day, when the youngest wouldn’t move, despite, Ellie, my oldest dog trying her best to get him to respond and panicking when he wouldn’t, I would have agreed. However, after an afternoon of constant attention, he rallied and, I am still the happy owner of two active and friendly young lads. Why have I bought two bulls? No, they aren’t going to become my BBQ, I am raising and training them so that they will be able to pull my vardo (gypsy wagon) and we can tour. I hadn’t gotten around to naming them, but someone suggested that they should be Bill and Ted because they were going to have an excellent adventure. I guess that considering their alternative, yes, it was going to be pretty awesome for them. My plan is to video the entire process, from arrival to the day when we finally pull away from the woodland glade that is presently my home. Unfortunately, batteries and the calves have had a different idea. By the time I got around to replacing the batteries in my camera, the calves had already taken it on themselves to come to me when called and walk by my side. So, we will be playing catch up when I finally get to posting my videos. A brief back story for those that have just joined. I embraced my coming homelessness (when a friend pulled the plug on the rebuild that I was looking after for him), and I decided that I would travel, the old fashioned way, with my self built gypsy caravan and my (then) two dogs. My goats had gone to a friends home, where I was assured that they would have a good life and, my biggest problem was deciding on an ox (or oxen) or a horse as the power to pull my home. Having taken my goats back, because the quality of care that they were receiving was far below what was promised, the fact that I now have three dogs after meeting a free spirit on the track to the local village and, having decided on oxen, I am now living in a small woodland glade and considering the final rebuild of my home (it’s on version four at the moment, set up as my winter home.) So, interesting times are ahead as I cut the final ties to ‘normal life’ and become a truly free spirit. Already I am enjoying the benefits of being able to sit on the steps of my vardo, first thing in the morning, enjoying a coffee and listening to the sounds of nature. The next stage, when I will be on the road can’t come soon enough (although I will have to wait a few years, unless I can raise the funds to get an animal that I can hitch up now, and head off, training the animals as we move.) So, how do I survive living with a very limited income? (I currently have to make do with around 100 euro month, I need to make 200 to be comfortable – as in have food on the plate every day.) I love it! I can’t see myself ever returning to civilisation. Sure, there are challenges and I’ve been through some tough times, but I’m still here, and more importantly so are my animals. The animals always come first. I have the benefit of understanding why I’m not eating today, or tomorrow, or at least making do with very little, my animal colleagues don’thave that pleasure, so, it is my responsibility to make sure that their needs are met. More on that in the next post! Posted using [Partiko Android](https://partiko.app/referral/kepi) |

| body | Preparing for my next additions to my menagerie. Two bull calves. Not only am I saving them from slaughter, but, i'll have a challenging time with training them to work as a team. The ultimate goal is to have two, one and a half ton beasts that will pull my vardo around Europe. It won't be an immediate result, because, although they should respond well to training, they will be too young to work, well, at least for the first couple of years. In the meantime, we will be pulling a small cart, to help with water collection and just to ride around. I'll be making regular posts with pics and videos, so, keep an eye out and, if you have any comments or questions, please feel free... | body | This morning I had a lie in. Until the dogs decided that it was time to get up. The usual routine is that I make some magical move that instantly energises the mutts. Charlie attacks either me or Jeb, or, both of us. Ellie wanders up the bed then climbs on top of me, trying to crush the air out of my chest, then rolls onto her side and growls, thumping me until I give her a back rub. At some stage Charlie will do something that deserves being snapped at. By now, I am fully awake but pinned to the bed, Ellie on my chest, Jeb crushing the family jewels and Charlie bouncing up and down me, from head to foot. When I admit defeat, that's when the excitement really starts. Ellie begins barking at nothing in particular, Charlie jumps off the bed, only to realise that he isn't tethered, so jumps back up so that he can jump off again and Jeb. Well, Jeb starts singing. When I am trying to put on my socks and boots, Charlie wants to help, Ellie is still barking and Jeb thinks that singing directly into my ear will speed things up. By the time I get up off the bed, ready to go out, it's pandemonium. Jeb is now screaming his latest song while bouncing around the bed, Charlie is begging me to pick him up and throw him on the bed and Ellie is now in threatening growl mode, tail wagging furiously. It's worse in inclement weather, when I need to put on an overcoat, but these days it's warm enough not to worry. I slide the bolt on the door and three dogs try to exit at the same time. Unless I tell Jeb to sit and stay. Then, three dogs try to exti at the same time! Once we are out, Jeb is off, Charlie is having a pee, or trying to chase Jeb and Ellie is checking the goats. Jeb comes back, Charlie still wants to chase and Ellie needs to decide if she is coming for a walk or staying with her charges. That's the usual start to the day. Today was the first day of milking. Audrey was no problem, the kids had been separated for the night and she was well stocked with milk. Job done and she is out to pasture. Little'un on the other hand, constant crying to the kids, putting her foot in the pail of milk, kicking over the pail of milk, putting both feet in the pail of milk. Needless to say, today's milking did not go well. Maybe tomorrow will be a new day, after all, no point in crying over spilt milk! |

| body | I accepted and welcomed my impending homelessness with open arms and a smile. After the job of a lifetime had turned out to be nothing but bullshit and near slavery, the offer from a ‘friend’ gave me somewhere to stay, a ruined house and somewhere to pitch my tent. When my friend let me down, I knew that I was going to be homeless, something that I realised I was gradually heading to, so I wasn’t unduly shocked. I calculated that I needed to raise $7 a day for my animals and myself to survive. I find myself, eighteen months later, trying to live on less than half of that. It’s a struggle. I have set up a Patreon channel where I share posts and videos of my, less than ordinary life, that is where my income comes from, a handful of people subscribe, but, nowhere near as many as I need. I set the subscription baseline at $1 a month, less than 3.3 cents a day. With nearly 600 followers on my facebook page I thought that I could achieve $210 a month. I was wrong. I make craft items and leatherwork. I don’t set prices, I let people pay what they want, or can afford, still very few takers. This week I visited ‘rabbit town’ (yes, it’s a town with rabbits living in it!), a friend was taking me to see some bull calves (I am looking to buy two calves to pull my home as I travel around Europe). Talking to the owner, he mentioned that he was going to another farm on Sunday to buy some more, and yes, if I wanted to come along and find two for myself he was happy to take me along. I have the money saved for mydraft animals, but, with Spring having arrived, thenumber available is shrinking rapidly, and their price increaseswith their size. The thing is, I am short the cost of transport, insurance, vet fees, feed and equipment, a total of 380 euros. This is probably the last time that I will be able to afford animals this year and that will put my plans back a minimum of a year. Frustrating, but, I’ve put items for sale, I’ve asked for help and some friends have been kind enough to send some funds, I’m still two hundred and fifty euros short and, two bullcalves arefacing slaughter. I’m not expecting handouts… well I suppose that I am, but it’s frustrating that to live a moneyless life, I need money to get started. Last night, as I lay awake (no, I’m not sleepless or despairing.) I had this idea that if I could get people to subscribe to my Patreon channel for one month, and then cancel, (remember the $1 a month I mentioned earlier?) well, this would go a way to solving my challenge, and, I will have stories to tell about the bulls, their training and our travels ( I will be writing anyway, I’ll just have more to tell.) I can’t do it myself, I’m looking after the animals, I’m in the process of rebuilding my home on wheels, I am off grid so don’t have access to the internet 24/7 So, I am being extremely cheeky… I am going to set a challenge… Can you find one person to subscribe to my Patreon channel for one day? $1 will be debitted from their card or bank account. They can cancel the next day… it’s easy and simple. And, I will be one dollar closer to saving two bull calves, the goal of travelling Europe the old fashioned way and sharing my stories as I go! And, here I am. Patreon.com/vardolife Posted using [Partiko Android](https://partiko.app/referral/kepi) |

| body | I accepted and welcomed my impending homelessness with open arms and a smile.
