Known for championing immigrant rights in the city, Lee went head-to-head with President Donald Trump over immigration and the administration's opposition to the Sanctuary City movement.\n\nLee said his family's background as immigrants from China inspired his desire to fight Trump's anti-immigration stance. In his 2017 State of the City speech in January, Lee spoke about defying Trump, saying that San Francisco would be \"a sanctuary city now, tomorrow, forever,\" to a standing ovation. Lee was the 43rd Mayor of San Francisco and has served the city since 2011. \n\n\n\"I felt there were barriers in the city when it came to immigrant communities. The rally to date marks a 5,758.2 percent increase.\n\n**What is litecoin?**\n\nLitecoin is a cryptocurrency founded by Charlie Lee. It's the fourth-largest digital currency by market capitalization or value behind bitcoin cash, Ethereum and bitcoin. Its market cap stands at around $17.4 billion, compared to $293.8 billion for bitcoin.\nLike bitcoin, it runs on a blockchain, which is a public ledger of transactions that can't be tampered with.\n\n**What's driving the rally?**\n\nA number of reasons are behind the rise. One has been the rise of interest in cryptocurrencies and the increasing number of users trading.\nLee tweeted an image of data from Coinmarketcap.com on Tuesday showing that litecoin was the most heavily-traded cryptocurrency on GDAX, one of the most popular exchanges.\n\nLitecoin has also benefited due to bitcoin's slow transaction speed.\n\"Litecoin traditonally gets a boost when bitcoin slows,\" Charles Hayter, CEO of CryptoCompare, told CNBC by email.\nAnother reason for litecoin's rise could be down to investors trying to diversify into other cryptocurrencies.
