With a length of more than 2.5 metres, Arthropleura is the largest arthropod – invertebrates with jointed legs, such as scorpions and crabs – ever to have existed on Earth. The new specimen appears to be the biggest found to date.\n\nIn January 2018, Neil Davies at the University of Cambridge and his colleagues stumbled across the fossil by chance on Howick Beach in Northumberland during a geological tour of England and Wales.\n\n“We saw that there was a very large piece of sandstone cliff that had fallen off and it had split down the middle as it fell,” says Davies. “We had a quick peak inside the crack that had formed and saw that there was a really large fossil inside there.”\n\n\nAfter extracting the remains, they determined that the fossil was a segment from the rear of Arthropleura. This section was around 76 centimetres long and 36 centimetres wide. The team then calculated that the creature must originally have been 2.63 metres long and 55 centimetres wide.\n\n“We can estimate they are the largest arthropod to have ever walked on Earth,” says Davies. It was potentially even bigger than the largest eurypterid, or sea scorpion, which lived around the same time as Arthropleura.\n\nThe environment in which the fossil was found was different to what the researchers had expected. “It comes from a sandy delta environment, rather than a coal forest that [Arthropleura] is often illustrated as living in,” says Davies.\n\n\nThey also dated the fossil to the early Carboniferous period, making it much older than the only other two Arthropleura fossils yet found, which were discovered in Germany a century ago.\n\nThis also predates the rise in atmospheric oxygen around 300 million years ago that has often been cited as the reason these millipedes were so large, which suggests a need to rethink how these creatures may have evolved.\n\n“There’s plenty of things out there left to be discovered, even in places where people have looked many times before,” says Davies. “When you find these things, it builds a picture of the alternative kind of Earth that that existed in the past.”\n\nJournal reference: Journal of the Geological Society, DOI: 10.1144/jgs2021-115\n\nSign up to Wild Wild Life, a free monthly newsletter celebrating the diversity and science of animals, plants and Earth’s other weird and wonderful inhabitants",

Indian culture is so deep-rooted and connected to its soil. Indian calendars are different from Gregorian calendar, which ignores human experience in relation to planetary movement. No Hindu can miss out on this festivity as it marks the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra. Chaitra is the month in the lunar calendar. In Sanskrit, the word ‘Ugadi' is a combination of two words: ‘yug,' which means ‘age,' and ‘adi,'which means ‘a new beginning.' As a result, it relates to the beginning of a new age.\n \nSince it symbolises with a new day and a new beginning, Hindus start new work and ventures on this day. The day commences with a ceremonial oil bath with the new turmeric that has been brought from the nearby farms. The tradition on this day is that people uproot the newly grown turmeric or ‘pasupu’ for overall growth and health. The puja is performed after wearing traditional attire, decorating homes with earthen lamps and rangoli.\n \nLegend says that Brahma created the universe on Ugadi. The nine-day-long spring festival of Vasantha Navaratri begins on this day and concludes on Ram Navami day. It is believed that the creator Brahma had started the creation of the Universe on this day.\n \nThe day is observed by drawing colourful patterns on the floor called Muggulu decorated with mango leaf on doors called toranalu can be seen.\n \nAs this festival has an agricultural background to it, the prasadam offered to God on this day is the Ugadi Pachadi which is unique for its nine different types of ingredients added to it. Pandit Sri Mylavarapu Srinivasa Rao of Vijayawada, Kanaka Durgamma temple says,“The prasadam is made out of the nine ingredients that are brought from the new produce from the agri-farms. New jaggery symbolises happiness, neem for its bitterness symbolising sadness, chilli or pepper seeds that are newly grown also known for its hard taste symbolises anger, tamarind juice for its sourness symbolising disgust, salt symbolises fear, unripe mango symbolises surprise. The pacchadi, the festive dish is highly symbolic and reminds people that the coming year, like all of life will consist of a mix of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter experiences. Just as the various substances are intertwined, one is reminded that no event or episode is entirely good or bad. Even in the midst of adversity, there are sweet moments. One is also reminded that the experience of taste is fleeting and ephemeral, as is life, and that one must learn to put pain and pleasure in proper temporal perspective.\n \nAlso the scientific reason behind this festival is that there is certain physical change happening in the Northern Hemisphere of our planet during this period of the year.\n\nNoted spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev says, “The Indian calendar is very significant not just culturally but scientifically because it connects you with the movements of the planet. So ancient texts say that this is the right time to renew bodies, time to renew the soil and all that is physical in its existence. Ugadi is a time to commit ourselves to the self, to build ourselves into wonderful human beings”.\n \nAncient texts say that soil and water are integral to the way we live in. Everything in the air we breathe in order to understand this process of change, ancient texts have said that it's important to know the soil and the water we live in. Sadhguru further says, “The tilt of the globe renders the northern hemisphere to receive the highest amount of the Sun’s energy during the 21-day period that starts from Ugadi. Though it may be uncomfortable for humans in terms of the temperature soaring, this is the time when the earth’s batteries are charged. Ugadi is on the first day of the waxing moon after the first new moon post equinox, suggesting a new beginning.” Andhariki Ugadi Shubakanshalu (Best wishes to all on the occasion of Ugadi).",

Well, unsatisfied by having just one SciFi-esque city, he's already discussing another one.\n\nReports suggest that he's in advanced conversations with the Ugandan government about the establishment of Akon City 2 in the East African country.\n\nThis fascinating development will undoubtedly cost a small fortune and most of it will be coming from the Akoin cryptocurrency project.\n\nAkoin is the premier currency of Akon's dream of upgrading Africa and will be the governance token of all the futuristic cities.\n\nThe Akoin was minted on Stellar blockchain and is currently being used by Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) in Kenya. The token has largely been a success and it will be powering the futuristic cities.\n\nThe first city in Senegal is already under construction and will be open to people in Africa much sooner than the project in Uganda that has construction work stipulated to last until 2036.\n\nThe people\nThere's not been much said about the project but on the surface of it, the Ugandan government reps seem supportive.\n\nIsaac Musumba, Uganda’s Minister of State for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development alluded to supporting the project. In a press conference held last week, he said that\n\nA place suitable in Uganda that has not-less-than one square mile will be made available to him and his team so he can harness resources and investments, attract investors, manage the project, and have a city.\n\nThis is rather interesting coming from the minister, considering Uganda's stance on cryptocurrencies. Various snippets from the government's policies on crypto suggest some level of apathy towards digital assets. Statements like;\n\nThe government of Uganda does not recognize any crypto-currency as legal tender in Uganda.\nThe government of Uganda has not licensed any organization in Uganda to sell crypto-currencies or to facilitate the trade in crypto-currencies and so these organizations are not regulated by the Government or any of its agencies.\nWell, considering it is a project that is scheduled for 2036, it is very possible that there will be a change in perception before the time comes.\n\nAlternatively, there might be concessions made by the government, considering how beneficial the project will be for the country.\n\nHow do we get there?\nOne question that's been thrown around regularly is how the people will be able to afford to even get to this place.\n\nConsidering how sophisticated Akon City promises to be, I doubt that the mostly poor population of people in the region will be able to afford it. According to Akon, this shortcoming should be a motivation, rather than a deterrent, as he stated that;\n\n“I know if I put it there, they’re going to find a way to afford it because it’s going to motivate them. Ultimately when you create an opportunity, people grow with that opportunity, people learn with that opportunity, people are motivated with that opportunity.”\n\nFrom where I'm standing, that sounds a tad bit optimistic and somewhat utopian. I admit it is a good idea and ideally should give us something beautiful but I'm pretty sure it is just going to be occupied by the wealthy political class in the region.\n\nEqualiser\nIn fact, depending on how isolated it is from the \"normal world\", it could turn into Haven for these crooked politicians while they continue to plunder the economy.\n\nI think the best way to ensure that this thing doesn't blow up in our face, is to ensure that it reaches its target and doesn't turn into a cash grab.\n\nThe moment money becomes the centre of attraction, rich politicians will run the show and all you'll create is a microcosm of Africa inside Africa. China controls more than 51% of all Bitcoin mining- which gives them the ability to create what is known as a ‘double spend’. The rest of the digital currency can be spent twice, creating a potential problem because digital information can be reproduced easily by people who know the blockchain network and how to manipulate it. Which is equivalent to being able to counterfeit Bitcoin. So, another phrase here we want to get Stephen’s expertise on… tell us about Blockchain- if you can define that for us. \n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nBlockchain is an entirely different animal than Bitcoin. Although Bitcoin uses blockchain and that part of Bitcoin is great. It’s a distributed ledger- which means it’s like accountants which keep books that keep track of the different transactions. Well, this is like passing books around to a whole bunch of people that keep track of all the back transactions. Except, the difference is this set of books can’t be stolen. It can’t be accessed by anybody, it remains in the hands of the computer. Once the transaction is set in stone- it stays in stone. So, that’s a good aspect of any type of financial or contractual operation that uses blockchain- it’s doing something very, very smart. However, blockchain records the past and that past cannot be rewritten, that’s true. But we are talking about the future. In the future, anytime China really wants- I’m not saying on a minute’s notice- but they can gather 51% of Bitcoin miners. Because they have over 51% just in that country and that’s not talking about Iran and Russia which are also not the best friends of the United States. They can gather easily, in my opinion 51% of miners, to create the so-called double spend. And that’s the end of Bitcoin. \n\nPeter Thiel, yesterday was saying that Bitcoin could be used as a major financial weapon against the dollar. Now, I didn’t quite agree with his reasoning but I certainly agree with the conclusion. It could be and this is serious stuff! And if it happens we have only ourselves to blame. As well as our financial institutions to blame because they’re encouraging this trading in the US. While at the same time, they’re saying ‘let’s clean up the environment’ but it’s okay to trade Bitcoin which makes the environment filthy. \n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nHow does Bitcoin make the environment filthy?\n\n\n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\n\nBecause it  uses so much energy that we could otherwise be devoting or substituting for solar energy, for wind energy and things like that. Basically, whether you believe in climate change or not…I’m saying that all the financial institutions are on board as far as climate change goes except if there’s something like Bitcoin that comes along. This is my own pet peeve, okay. You just have to point out the hypocrisy of these financial institutions which say; ‘we’ve got to do everything in the world for climate change…we’ve got to reward companies that are reducing energy consumption.’ Then all of the sudden they start trading Bitcoin and encourage it. \n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nSo, the reason it uses so much energy- because it involves such heavy computer calculations, right? To verify the transactions… \n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nYes, this is exactly the case, Jeff, there is nothing in this world that is free. Once you are at the level where you are using as much energy as a country the size of Switzerland, you’re using as much energy as solar energy created in 2019. So, it’s like the year 2019 did not even exist in terms of the creation of solar energy because all that energy is being consumed by Bitcoin. It’s nuts- it’s crazy. This country has to wake up to what it’s doing. Why not just hand the keys to China? The one good thing we have in this country right now is that we have the world’s reserve currency. And we might be giving up that- to buy more Bitcoin!\n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nThe more Bitcoin gains popularity- the worse it is for the dollar?\n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nPotentially, yes. And all the more likely that China- if they wanted to really create a massive catastrophe, they could. Bitcoin and the entire crypto market has a valuation greater than Apple. If it were to go up to $150k and I’m not saying it won’t. What I’m talking about now, Jeff, is China’s ability to manipulate Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies anytime they want. China could sit back and say ‘let Bitcoin go to a million dollars.’ I mean, if they have the power to destroy it…do you know how much money is at stake? Trillions and trillions of dollars. \n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nIf China pursues their own digital currency, will that be backed by something like gold?\n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nEventually, I believe it will. Yes, but I believe China is moline and you’re certainly not going to ever get me to say anything good about the Communist Party. But they’re not stupid, they do not want control of the world’s currency. They want enough control so they can make China a great country. Basically for their people and that’s what they’re out for. If you want to follow China and learn about China- it’s best to read about Singapore. China has followed Singapore almost step-by-step. This is what I started writing about China 10 years ago, I realize that. The Chinese people in Singapore, the Chinese people in Taiwan are not any different than the Chinese people in China. \n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nBut Singapore and Taiwan are not communist nations, am I right?\n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nNo, they are not. And China did not necessarily have to become a communist nation either. If you ask me to forecast that- I’m forecasting probably beyond my lifetime. My strong guess is China might become a democratic nation. Singapore and Taiwan are small. China is a country right now of 1.4 billion people. I think the argument they were making to themselves, especially looking at what happened in 2008 and 2009 in this country- there was a lot of talk when Xi Jinping took power that China might consider a path to democracy. But they were doing pretty well with what they were doing- and we looked like we were faltering. \n\nRight now, when you see things like Bitcoin, we’ve got to wake up. Someone has to throw cold water on President Biden and say ‘hey wake up, look at what’s going on!’ Look at Larry Fink, the guy who’s running BlackRock. The people running Vanguard, etc. They are going to try and make more and more money on Bitcoin. It’s like more and more control.\n\nJeff Crouere- WGSO 990AM Host\nTo sum things up, rather than Bitcoin, you recommend that investors focus on gold, correct?\n\nDr. Stephen Leeb, Ph.D.\nIn the first 40 years of the 21st century, owning gold (burying it in your backyard or buying an ETF) outperformed the S&P 500 – with dividends reinvested it outperformed the S&P 500 fivefold. The S&P 500 went up threefold. Case Closed!\n\nI mean, the conditions that characterized the first 20 years of this century I believe are going to characterize the next 20 years in spades- on steroids! Gold outperformed everything else in the last 20 years, although, there were setbacks. Right now, gold has done nothing but go down over the past 12 months, referred to as a correction. This is the time to be buying it…certainly over Bitcoin. Let’s face it, Bitcoin is nothing more than a ticket to disaster. Gold will always be a good investment.
