| title | Welcome to Cryptoland #1 |
| body |

A few things that I learned along the way to crypto-knowledge. Some things are over-simplified on purpose, some explanations may be incorrect.

A few days ago, I finally managed to watch Banking on Bitcoin, a “documentary that covers Bitcoin’s roots, its future and the technology that makes it tick”. Basically I learned more about the project’s birth, what was the idea(s) behind it, the people involved in…etc. It’s probably a good start to everyone who wants to get started.

Also watching this documentary, I discovered how the regulation around Bitcoin started in the US, led by Ben Lawsky, and how it shaped the blockchain economy in a certain way : A lot of blockchain entrepreneurs were forced to move out of the US and choose Asia for softer regulation and maybe also more adoption.

Ben Lawsky story is interesting as he created the BitLicense as a regulator in 2015, and then left the government to start a consulting firm around that same regulation he created. A lot of people in the crypto-world seems to not have a lot of appreciation for him. Also, he recently joined Ripple, a project described by many as the “cryptocurrency of banks” : It is in fact a private blockchain that will be used among banks, to revolutionize international bank transfers and make them way more quick and cheap. Something crypto-enthusiasts see as conflicting to the philosophy that cryptocurrency and their decentralised system wants to achieve, whether others just see it as a good use of the technology in the banking system, that will not vanish magically anyway.

After reading https://hackernoon.com/neo-versus-ethereum-why-neo-might-be-2018s-strongest-cryptocurrency-79956138bea3, I got a clearer view of what 3rd generations blockchains (Like NEO, Cardano, NEM, Qtum) are trying to accomplish, and what challenges 2nd generation blockchains are facing in order to close the technological gap and stay alive. For example, at the time Ethereum (a 2nd generation blockchain) was created, blockchain technology wasn’t advanced enough to fully address issues like scalability, interoperability (communicating with other blockchains) and sustainability (a system of governance) : They now have to work on top of the foundations and “patch” incrementally to improve the technology. 3rd generations blockchains on the other hand, that were created recently, learned from 2nd generation blockchains and started from scratch, with more future-proof technology. So basically a “race” is developing between Ethereum who has the most adoption for now and a huge team of developers improving the platform by working on the current limitations, and the other hand, projects like Neo and Cardano that are just getting started (so with small adoption for now) but with better technology.

|

|

|

Some things are over-simplified on purpose, some explanations may be incorrect.
\n
\n
A few days ago, I finally managed to watch Banking on Bitcoin, a “documentary that covers Bitcoin’s roots, its future and the technology that makes it tick”. Basically I learned more about the project’s birth, what was the idea(s) behind it, the people involved in…etc. It’s probably a good start to everyone who wants to get started.
\n
Also watching this documentary, I discovered how the regulation around Bitcoin started in the US, led by Ben Lawsky, and how it shaped the blockchain economy in a certain way : A lot of blockchain entrepreneurs were forced to move out of the US and choose Asia for softer regulation and maybe also more adoption.
\n
Ben Lawsky story is interesting as he created the BitLicense as a regulator in 2015, and then left the government to start a consulting firm around that same regulation he created. A lot of people in the crypto-world seems to not have a lot of appreciation for him.
