One option that’s caught a lot of attention is kratom, a natural remedy from Southeast Asia that is reported to help users relax both mentally and physically.

But are the health benefits worth it if the plant harms the planet? Sustainable practices ensure you can enjoy kratom without a guilty conscience. So what’s the impact of harvesting and cultivating this plant compared to other natural remedies? Read on to find out.

How Sustainable is Kratom?

One big plus for kratom is that it’s mostly wildly harvested, which means farmers don’t need to clear huge areas for cultivation. The result? Preservation of rainforests. These rainforests help absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, so keeping them intact is definitely a win for everyone.

Another plus is that wild kratom doesn’t rely on pesticides and fertilizers, which can:

Pollute water

Hurt wildlife

Degrade soil quality

Kratom trees get by just fine as part of a self-sustaining ecosystem. They source all they need from the soil and benefit from the natural predator-prey balance that keeps pests in check.

Another thing to note? Many kratom farmers use sustainable harvesting practices; instead of chopping down whole trees, they simply pick the leaves. This approach:

Keeps the forest canopy intact

Protects soil from erosion

Helps retain moisture in the ecosystem

Considering these factors, the next time you use kratom extracts or any other kratom product, you can rest easy knowing you aren’t doing much harm to the environment.

Turmeric

Turmeric, the vibrant yellow spice that’s slowly becoming a favorite in kitchens and wellness circles, promises several health benefits. It can help:

Relieve pain

Improve heart health

Promote healthy digestion by reducing bloating and gas

But how does its cultivation affect the planet?

Traditional turmeric farming usually involves methods like using cow dung and solar drying, which are pretty gentle on the environment. But nowadays, many farmers are shifting towards even greener practices. They’re abandoning synthetic stuff for organic methods, like green manure and organic compost, which naturally enrich the soil and keep things sustainable.

To top it off, precision farming tools, from drones to soil sensors, are starting to pop up in turmeric fields. These gadgets help farmers make smarter calls on things like watering, fertilizing, and keeping pests in check—all based on solid data.

However, a big problem often arises with turmeric’s packaging. Most turmeric products are packaged in plastic bottles and bags, which may end up smothering plant life and harming wildlife. Thankfully, more sustainable packaging options – like compostable or recyclable materials – are gaining popularity, helping reduce the environmental impact of the golden spice’s products.

Echinacea

Echinacea, that go-to herb for fighting colds, is a favorite in many natural medicine cabinets. Farmers typically harvest it at the end of its flowering season, right when its medicinal properties are at their peak. They use the roots, flowers, and leaves, so they often uproot the whole plant during harvest, an approach that can really wear out the soil, making it less fertile for future crops.

Compared to kratom, which often grows wild without much help, the purple coneflower needs a lot more hands-on care and resources. But there are ways to shrink the environmental footprint of growing it like organic farming, permaculture, and biodynamic farming – which are eco-friendlier options.

Kava

Kava acts on the brain's receptors and produces relaxing effects similar to those from hypnosis therapy.

Compared to intensive agricultural practices, kava cultivation typically requires minimal chemical inputs. Farmers often stick to organic methods, using compost and mulch to keep the soil healthy, and this means they can cut back on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Many kava farmers also practice agroforestry where they grow kava alongside other crops. This method improves biodiversity, keeps the soil in great shape, and reduces the risk of pests and diseases. The result? A more resilient farming system that works with nature, not against it.

Final Words

When done responsibly, cultivating and harvesting kratom can have a minimal impact on the environment. But sustainability extends beyond farming practices; you have the power to make a difference too. Small actions in your daily life – like choosing sustainable products, reducing waste, and supporting ethical brands – can slowly add up to a big impact.

|

| body | .jpg) image source: https://unsplash.com/photos/FVh_yqLR9eA Often, you see cancer patients or other people dealing with chronic illnesses promoting the benefits of cannabis. But, in many respects, it’s heavily underutilized for pain management. Cannabis still has a negative reputation in many circles, and not enough people know it is actually considered an analgesic medication. This means it can be as effective as opioids without the severe side effects, making it a convenient and sometimes safer alternative for patients with chronic pain. When a patient finds relief in CBD or medical marijuana, they are experiencing the effects of cannabinoids. These are the chemical compounds found within the fibers of cannabis. With most marijuana strains, our bodies react to either high doses of the psychoactive cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or anxiety-reducing cannabidiol (CBD). We know the “what,” but the science behind the ‘how’ continues to develop. What Are Cannabinoids? Cannabinoids are the natural compounds that are found in the cannabis sativa plant, with over 100 compounds produced in a single plant. The most commonly known cannabinoid, Delta 9-THC, is the most psychoactive ingredient found in cannabis strains. Cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBN, CBG, and CBC interact with the body’s cannabinoid receptors, known as CB1 or CB2, present on the surface of our cells. When cannabinoids interact with these receptors, they inhibit the release of neurotransmitters and reduce neural inflammation. In other words, they have the power to connect or disconnect the communication pathways to the brain. This means that ingesting cannabis could slow the brain's reactivity to pain, or alter the brain to ignore feelings of nausea or other uncomfortable symptoms. The effects of cannabinoids vary. Memory, cognition, and situational responses all have the potential to be altered, but not all cannabinoids affect the body the same way. In fact, each compound is differentiated by its level of psychoactivity. The potency of THC has stronger effects on cognition because of its high levels of psychoactivity whereas CBD provides much less brain stimulation. When interacting together in marijuana strains, the two compounds tend to balance out the psychoactivity levels for a calmer, relaxing experience. Oxidation can affect the potency of cannabinoids. When marijuana is exposed to air for long periods of time, the oxidation process naturally lessens the strength of the present THC. What Do Cannabinoids Look Like? Cannabinoids are present in any cannabis-derived products. In our modern age, this spans a long list, including: 1. Cannabis plants or leaves 2. Marijuana-based edibles like gummies or capsules 3. Oil tinctures 4. Bath products: THC-infused lotions, bath bombs, bath soaks, etc 5. Body products: Oils, oro-mucosal sprays, CBD-infused facial masks While the CBD-infused bath bomb may bring you the peaceful self-care moment you deserve, not every product that contains cannabinoids will provide a buzz. Even certain pantry spices – cinnamon, black pepper, oregano – can activate your cannabinoid receptors for anxiety-relieving benefits. People looking for high-quality strength relief for anxiety or physical pain will reap the most benefits from the high levels of CBD found in medical-grade cannabis. Cannabinoids For Pain Relief Medicinal marijuana been trusted for thousands of years for its pain-relieving effects. This can be a big advantage of patients with non-cancer and cancer-related chronic pain. Moments of therapeutic relief from cannabinoids include: 1. Antiemetic relief: Effective against chemo-induced or non-chemo-induced nausea and vomiting. 2. Pain Management: Patients who use cannabis or cannabinoids are more likely to experience clinically significant improvements in pain relief. 3. Muscle Spasticity Relief: Adults who experience extremely stiff or achy muscles because of multiple sclerosis have reported improved symptoms with short-term use of orally ingested cannabinoids. Patients dealing with chronic illnesses will often turn to cannabis in order to combat symptoms of illness or side effects of treatment or both. In one study, two-thirds of the patients with chronic pain reported health benefits from using medical cannabis, including improved pain management and sleep. There is evidence that cannabinoids do provide therapeutic benefits to a percentage of medical marijuana users. A New Medical Avenue Of course, cannabis is not a cure for chronic illness, but its promise as a home pain remedy is certainly worth exploring. Experimenting with moderate use of medical marijuana will not hinder treatment or forever impair a person’s ability to function. It can provide just as much therapeutic pain relief for medicinal patients as it can for sore muscles or a serious migraine. If you are dealing with chronic or non-chronic pain and are seeking relief, talk to a referring doctor about your symptoms and your eligibility for a medical marijuana card. Once you obtain a medical card, you’ll be able to access an entire world of cannabis strains that provide relief. Dispensary employees can point you in the direction of products worth trying, especially if you have preferences about consumption. Our knowledge of cannabis and its benefits continues to evolve, so consider a trip to the dispensary next time you are looking to ease your unique pain. |

Many think it only happens to veterans, but this anxiety disorder can occur from exposure to any dramatic incident. It makes day-to-day life difficult by causing insomnia, stress, depression, and more.

If you have PTSD, you might think you'll never get your old life back, but that's not true.

Fortunately, effective treatments are available for those battling PTSD, including psychotherapy, synthetic drugs, and the newly-accepted cannabis. Below, we will explore these three options and dig deeper into medical marijuana to see how it can help your PTSD.

Psychotherapy

Different types of psychotherapy can be used to treat PTSD patients, such as:

Cognitive Therapy

Helps you identify destructive thinking patterns and eliminate them.

Exposure Therapy

Helps you face traumatic incidents and eliminate flashbacks.

While these methods are helpful, they are more effective when paired with medications.

Synthetic Medications

Direct drugs like anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications can help alleviate severe anxiety and depression in PTSD patients. Medications like Zoloft and Prozac may be prescribed to help with the symptoms. However, they have dangerous side effects such as agitation, exhaustion, insomnia, sexual problems, etc.

Natural Medication ⏤ Cannabis

Another option for alleviating the signs of PTSD is cannabis, also known as marijuana. This plant has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Now, you can get a medical marijuana card online and use it to access cannabis legally. It's available in pre-rolled cones and joints for smoking. You can also get raw buds or dried leaves and make edibles.

Components of Cannabis

Different compounds of the cannabis plant work together to improve your PTSD. Let's look at the most notable ones.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are active ingredients of the cannabis plant that interact with your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is responsible for regulating different functions in your body, such as pain, sleep, and mood.

THC and CBD are two of the most common cannabinoids with promising medicinal properties. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid associated with the high people feel when smoking marijuana. Meanwhile, CBD is non-psychoactive yet effective for PTSD. The effectiveness of cannabinoids against PTSD was evaluated in a one-year study as participants reported a significant decrease in their symptoms.

Terpenes

Terpenes are organic components of cannabis that also exist in other plants. They act as a repellent against harmful insects while creating characteristic aromas. The smell of pines, citrus fruits, and other plants comes from terpenes.

They are also abundant in cannabis. Research shows that they have calming effects and numerous other health benefits. Studies exploring terpenes in cannabis suggest that terpenes in certain strains of cannabis can improve sleep in PTSD patients.

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are polyphenols that give plants their vibrant colors. Cannabis plants have a rich supply of flavonoids with anti-anxiety potential. Studies show that administering flavonoids to chronically-stressed animal models and those with PTSD produced antidepressant-like effects. With further clinical trials, the efficacy of flavonoids against PTSD in humans can be proven too.

How Does Cannabis Help With PTSD?

Cannabis can make living easier for PTSD patients by:

Improving Sleep

PTSD patients suffer from various sleeping disorders, such as insomnia. Studies suggest that CBD can improve sleep quality, resulting in a restful night of sleep. Those who use CBD oil before bed report that they can fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Reducing Stress

Stress and anxiety are the main signs of PTSD. Studies have examined the effects of cannabis on the fear response of PTSD patients. They show that THC regulates threat processing in this group, helping them react accordingly and experience less stress.

Alleviating Depression Signs

PTSD patients battle with depression daily. Research suggests that cannabinoids can help them win this fight by affecting the serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin regulation can lead to the feeling of happiness and alleviate the signs of depression.

These are just some of the ways cannabis can benefit PTSD patients. With more human research and clinical trials, we can expect to see cannabinoid-based medications soon.

Other Medicinal Benefits of Cannabis

Cannabis has shown promise for other conditions as well. Here are some of them:

Blood Pressure

Using cannabis is proving to be one of the natural ways to lower your blood pressure. One study evaluated the resting blood pressure of human subjects as well as their blood pressure after stress tests. It showed that CBD managed to decrease both.

Pain and Inflammation

Multiple studies have pointed to CBD’s potential to reduce inflammation and pain in those suffering from inflammatory conditions. Many athletes now use this property of CBD to recover from strenuous workout sessions.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

New studies show that cannabinoids may be able to treat and even prevent gastrointestinal issues like irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Epilepsy

CBD’s anti-seizure properties are well known. Studies show that this cannabinoid can reduce the symptoms and frequency of seizures. Even the FDA has approved a CBD-based drug for epilepsy called Epidiolex.

Cancer

Cannabis has been shown to benefit cancer patients in multiple ways. Not only can it reduce chemotherapy-induced nausea, but new studies suggest it can also prevent cancer cell growth and tumor formation.

Put Your Health First

Each patient responds differently to treatments. You may recover with psychotherapy or need medications. While not all questions about cannabis are answered yet, current evidence suggests that it’s a safe option to try. That is because cannabis is an all-natural product, unlike synthetic drugs with dangerous side effects. However, if you're dealing with PTSD, it’s best to consult your doctor before taking anything. So put your health first to get better.

|
