body

We sat down with Liberty AIM founder Christopher Johnston and asked all the difficult questions so you don’t have to.

Part 1 of 2. It’s that good.

Christopher Johnston is the CEO and founder of Liberty Browser and AIM. Since 2012, he’s been anticipating the future of digital data and it has just caught up with his ideas. In a time where mighty data harvesters like Facebook are coming under attack for exposing consumer data, Liberty is here to safeguard your privacy.

Chris, every proposed solution comes from an identified problem. How did the idea of Liberty AIM come about and what issues did you want to solve?

Liberty Browser was born out of a desire back in 2011 to stop Facebook and Google from harvesting my data. I wanted to re-balance the internet in favour of the user not the corporation.

Back in 2011, the Internet was already an asymmetric place with too much power concentrated in few hands. I believed that I could use some of the technologies and architecture I had invented, namely: Cast Iron, a payment methodology I founded back in 2000 — essentially the fundamentals that Google and Apple Pay are based on today.

The main issue with privacy is that to have it, you need security. And to have REAL security, you generally get inconvenience.

Security generally comes with multiple steps which the user needs to learn. Our planned workaround was using the SIM in the device and a user PIN: we wanted to contain user sessions so that the user had privacy between browsing sessions and throughout their entire device. The problem with SIMs however is that they are owned by the Mobile Operator and they don’t like you to interact with them for security reasons.

The reality was that we were ahead of our time, so we started writing patents around our ideas, we tried to guess the future. We wrote a family of patents first. We then applied them in multiple countries across the world. The first patent was granted in April 2015 in the UK. Since then, we’ve had grants in China, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union. In the middle of 2015, technology started to catch up with our vision and we realised we could turn our patents into products.

The present version of Liberty is the tip of the iceberg of what we want to do. It’s that good.
\n
Christopher Johnston is the CEO and founder of Liberty Browser and AIM. Since 2012, he’s been anticipating the future of digital data and it has just caught up with his ideas. In a time where mighty data harvesters like Facebook are coming under attack for exposing consumer data, Liberty is here to safeguard your privacy.
\n

\n
Chris, every proposed solution comes from an identified problem. How did the idea of Liberty AIM come about and what issues did you want to solve?
\n
Liberty Browser was born out of a desire back in 2011 to stop Facebook and Google from harvesting my data. I wanted to re-balance the internet in favour of the user not the corporation.
\n
Back in 2011, the Internet was already an asymmetric place with too much power concentrated in few hands. I believed that I could use some of the technologies and architecture I had invented, namely: Cast Iron, a payment methodology I founded back in 2000 — essentially the fundamentals that Google and Apple Pay are based on today.
\n
The main issue with privacy is that to have it, you need security. And to have REAL security, you generally get inconvenience.
\n
Security generally comes with multiple steps which the user needs to learn. Our planned workaround was using the SIM in the device and a user PIN: we wanted to contain user sessions so that the user had privacy between browsing sessions and throughout their entire device. The problem with SIMs however is that they are owned by the Mobile Operator and they don’t like you to interact with them for security reasons.
\n
The reality was that we were ahead of our time, so we started writing patents around our ideas, we tried to guess the future. We wrote a family of patents first. We then applied them in multiple countries across the world. The first patent was granted in April 2015 in the UK. Since then, we’ve had grants in China, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union. In the middle of 2015, technology started to catch up with our vision and we realised we could turn our patents into products.
\n
The present version of Liberty is the tip of the iceberg of what we want to do. Our ideas are always about how we make users the boss.
\n
What would you say to the folks who “don’t mind” Facebook using their data to ‘better target ads’ to them?
\n
To all you people who don’t care about this stuff, download Liberty and we will pay you to not care, we will also safeguard your privacy, so that when you decide you do care, we can give you the control to switch it off.
\n
Ultimately, Facebook has revolutionised the world. The problem is this: Facebook has the right to serve you ads, that’s how they make their money. They use the data you give them to do it. But do they really have the right to track you across your entire digital life?
\n
Most of all: it is not fair. Why should they make money out of your actions while you don’t get a dime? bodyThe internet is an unbalanced place. It is built on an asymmetric model where corporations hold the power over the consumer when in reality it is the user who holds all the cards. Today’s digital economy is run by commerce, service revenues, and especially advertising. Online ads are cultivated by consumer information or better yet, unethically collected data that fails to create actually targeted ads. This is because providers aggregate all kinds of information, resulting in consumer annoyance when faced by these bothersome ads. ![glenn-carstens-peters-203007-unsplash.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXgph8penPh4FKpqu7FGpBi4PrGYA9K82wUfyau7BnzsC/glenn-carstens-peters-203007-unsplash.jpg) The problem is that a person is not just the sum of a few clicks here and there. Just like in the real world, consumers are a collection of different types of personas. Think about it this way, it is unlikely that you are the same person throughout all social media platforms. On Facebook, a more casual persona may be adapted to connect with family and friends, while on LinkedIn a more professional approach may be utilized. This results in halfway user profiles where data collectors can only hope to target the person that they think is being represented. [Online data sharing is asymmetrical](https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/high-tech/our-insights/how-blockchains-could-change-the-world) consumers create daily information that is needed for an enriched advertising experience, but they are left out of the monetization process. Undermining user power and trust. *Blockchain as a trust tool* When hearing blockchain, many instantly think about Bitcoin. It is to no surprise since it was its primary application. But beyond digital currency, this digital ledger has the ability to surpass the online trust problem that we are facing today. Transactions on the blockchain are [more trustworthy](https://www.trtworld.com/opinion/can-blockchain-provide-the-building-blocks-to-our-future--14628) and have less risk, due to immutable records. Once something has been recorded it cannot be undone, this ultimately takes the edge off of having to give your complete trust to someone. Blockchain gives [power to the user](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jan/30/blockchain-buzzword-hype-open-source-ledger-bitcoin), allowing them to create digital property without having to worry about an outside institution. With this technology, consumers can be at the center of their personal data. They can decide who to transact and what information to provide. *A browser that favors the user, not the corporation* Giants like Google and Facebook, make money by selling your private data to advertisers and publishers. User data is a multi-billion dollar industry built on your harvested data and gives you nothing in return. This market is said to amass 200 billion dollars by 2020. While many consumers have found various ways to resist data harvesting - deleting cookies and using ad blockers - these actions can ultimately have adverse effects. Since cookies are used to authenticate and store website information, they are necessary for an enriched digital experienced. And while [ad blockers may make your browser experience less annoying](https://steemit.com/ico/@libertyaim/information-wants-to-be-free-but-it-s-also-expensive) it starves internet publishers by killing their ad revenue, resulting in paywalls. [Liberty AIM](https://libertyaim.io/), founded by Christopher Johnston back in 2012 was an idea ahead of its time. It wasn’t until recently that this blockchain based data exchange platform came to fruition. Our goal? To put consumers at the heart of the internet through user privacy, participation, and control. The Liberty Browser is currently in beta mode with 50,000 registered users and over 500,000 downloads. The Liberty browser is innovation built on trust, returning the power of personal data to the ones that create it, you. AIM builds trust by defending consumer data while growing their economy. Through the use of the Liberty Browser, users have the option to anonymously share their data with advertisers and in return are paid by tokens. These AIM tokens can be used to buy items and are vital for advertisers to access the anonymous data. If the user wants to stop providing their information, they can simply ‘opt-out’ anytime they want. The internet is unbalanced, AIM is working towards a democratized internet that is in favor of the user while also providing for the publishers and the advertisers. AIM an internet that works for everyone. Visit the [Liberty AIM website](https://libertyaim.io/) to learn how YOU can reclaim your digital sovereignty. For more updates, follow us on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/libertyaimico) and join the conversation on [Telegram](https://t.me/aimico).

And while [ad blockers may make your browser experience less annoying](https://steemit.com/ico/@libertyaim/information-wants-to-be-free-but-it-s-also-expensive) it starves internet publishers by killing their ad revenue, resulting in paywalls.\n\n[Liberty AIM](https://libertyaim.io/), founded by Christopher Johnston back in 2012 was an idea ahead of its time. It wasn’t until recently that this blockchain based data exchange platform came to fruition. Our goal? To put consumers at the heart of the internet through user privacy, participation, and control. The Liberty Browser is currently in beta mode with 50,000 registered users and over 500,000 downloads.\n\nThe Liberty browser is innovation built on trust, returning the power of personal data to the ones that create it, you. \n\nThe internet is unbalanced, AIM is working towards a democratized internet that is in favor of the user while also providing for the publishers and the advertisers. AIM an internet that works for everyone.\n\nVisit the [Liberty AIM website](https://libertyaim.io/) to learn how YOU can reclaim your digital sovereignty.\nFor more updates, follow us on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/libertyaimico) and join the conversation on [Telegram](https://t.me/aimico).",

body*People block bad ads* You find an interesting link to an article and as you try and enter the website you’re confronted by the ‘close this ad in X seconds’. You wait the allotted time and as you begin to scroll down, a pop-up ad with ‘subscribe today for…’ appears. While closing that you also notice that seemingly from out of nowhere someone starts talking and the ad banner at the bottom won’t go away. Frustrating right? By now you have forgotten why you even clicked the link in the first place and leave. People block ads not because they want to but because they’re forced to. Who wants to be constantly attacked while trying to search for information or entertainment? It’s annoying for the consumer and problematic for the publisher. Viewers are slowly becoming desensitized to the content clutter that has become the online advertising industry. In a place where quantity reigns over quality, internet users are being constantly bombarded by so many ads that it is often difficult to register them all. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they have resolved to blocking ads as a form of defense. ![christin-hume-505823-unsplash.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRE6QJEZgyWENDby9YRS8hHq9tVW6njasbBKGppbPttdb/christin-hume-505823-unsplash.jpg) A 2006 article in CBS News stated that [consumers back in the 70s](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cutting-through-advertising-clutter/) were exposed to 500 ads a day, and that (at the time of publication) it had risen to as many as 5,000. It’s an incredulous idea to even think that in just 24 hours someone can be targeted with 5,000 (or more) advertisements. But that is the reality that we are living in. It is estimated that [around 30% of internet users](https://www.emarketer.com/Article/Ad-Blocker-Use-Grows-Publishers-Face-New-Challenges/1016076) in the United States will block ads in 2018 through the use of an ad blocker. That’s almost half a rise from 2014. While ad blockers may be a quick fix against ‘bad ads’ they’re not without consequence. In some way or another, publishers need that ad revenue to create content and develop their business. *Saving ads by killing (some of) them* The [Coalition for Better Ads](https://www.betterads.org/) a self-regulating advertising organization knows that advertisements nowadays are killing the advertising industry by ruining the ad experience for consumers. While advertising may pay for content to be free and available to those who have access, consumers are also being bombarded by third-party content that corrupts their online experience. Advertising content that is often produced with their unwilling data. The Coalition for Better Ads is working towards improving consumer’s online advertising experience by researching their involvement and implementing new global standards for a better online experience. A step in the right direction that uses consumer insights to produce better advertisement and doesn’t diminish ad revenue. *Internet toll roads* As a safeguard against ad blockers, many websites have opted to use paywalls to fund their content. Making paywalls the toll roads of the internet. Traditionally, online content has been characterized by its free access which in turn was made possible by paid advertising. But due to the rise of ad blockers advertising revenue is lessening. As a defense, publishers are installing [paywalls](https://www.techopedia.com/definition/23653/paywall) to fund their websites. Like a highway toll, these paywalls restrict content access to the user, to pass by the consumer has to pay. [The New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/) and [The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/) have been proud advocates for the [metered paywall](https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/to-our-readers) for the past few years . This type of ‘soft’ wall allows viewers to view a number of articles for free before they are required to pay a subscription to continue reading the content. In the age of ad blockers it’s a defense mechanism, and they’re right to do so, if they make great content. But how can a reader be assured of that? At the end of 2017, [The New York Times reduced their free article quota](https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/1/16724620/new-york-times-cuts-five-free-articles-paywall) by half to increase the number of subscriptions for ‘high-quality journalism’. And as recent as last month, [Wired.com](https://www.wired.com/) decided to implement a four and a half free article paywall. To this, Nick Thompson the editor-in-chief at Wired had to say ‘[paywalls are an essential part of the future of journalism](http://www.niemanlab.org/2018/02/learning-from-the-new-yorker-wireds-new-paywall-aims-to-build-a-more-stable-financial-future/)…having a direct monetary relationship with your readers is one way to ensure that you have a stable financial future’. The upside of a paywall is that it makes consumers aware of the content that they are paying for and in turn it compels the publisher to produce content worth paying for. In a future of paywalls, content has to be based on quality and not quantity, it has to induce the reader to become a subscriber and not a mere viewer of the few gratuitous publications. Unlike ad blockers which only solve the short-term effects (constant pop-up ads), the [Liberty browser](http://libertyaim.io/) works with the consumer and publisher for an equal and fair exchange. Consumer data is shared voluntarily by the user resulting in a real production of data from which advertisers can create meaningful targeted ads. Liberty aims to give the user the freedom of privacy, participation, and control over their online data. It may seem like the age of free internet access may be coming to an end as ad blockers continue to be used and websites counteract with paywalls. Here lies the dilemma: advertisers need user data to create targeted ads, but users are tired of giving that information away without their permission. For everyone to win (advertisers, publishers, but most importantly YOU) online data has to be willingly shared by those who generate it. And if publishers are finding new ways to gain money, shouldn’t consumers also profit? User data is valuable and they know it, so why not gain from it? body*Just how invisible are you on the internet?* How many times have you searched aimlessly for a product to then have it pop-up in every website you visit? Numerously, by the way that the internet and digital advertising are working today. Companies are profiting from the actions that consumers take on the internet by tracking their behavior through the use of third-party cookies. This makes the advertising experience irrelevant to the consumer. To combat this, people have started using ‘private browsing’ more and more, but just how ‘invisible’ are you? The basis of [private browsing](https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemathews/2017/01/27/what-is-private-browsing-and-why-should-you-use-it/#557904ea25b1) is that it can be used as a ‘safeguard’ while searching the internet. By using this extension, your digital footprint won’t be recorded in the browsers search history. This means that you don’t have to manually delete your search history and in some cases worry about sites gathering information on your browsing habits. However, you are still left vulnerable to external networking monitoring and data hacking if you are using an unreliable Wi-Fi connection. ![95cdfeef.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSh1fd34gYB8iXz1XbmN37VEBzGqJ4tEH4kdhBWSJVFWP/95cdfeef.jpg) *Cookies have their benefits* Although there are browsers that offer ad blocking capabilities for a faster and ‘safer’ internet experience, they are forgetting that not all shared information is malicious. While ads may seem tedious at times, they are the revenue of content creators. Ad blocking software not only has a negative impact on the creator’s income, but it also affects the overall content. The [Financial Times](https://www.theguardian.com/media-network/2016/sep/02/publishers-ad-block-users-hide-content) has addressed this problem in the past. Through a social experiment targeted to a random selection of registered users, the [FT.com](http://ft.com/) website was changed for those who had downloaded ad blocking software. A third of the content was missing from their articles, in an ingenious way, this was connected to what they earned from ad revenue. Liberty AIM recognizes that the main problem is not ads and how big companies are sourcing our data, but that they are doing so without our complete approval. Internet users today, have reluctantly accepted the fact of having their data harvested and shared with third parties. This means that even if you searched for a product halfheartedly, you are likely to see it advertised back to you in every website you visit later on. But what if it did not have to be that way, what if you could participate of an enriching internet experience that is truly targeted to you? That is what our Liberty browser intends to do. *The best of both worlds* With the use of the Liberty browser the power of information sharing goes back to the consumer, enabling them to control with who and when to share their data. This not only provides the consumer active participation but it also returns control over their personal data. The user has the ability to anonymously share their information and in return they are rewarded with tokens. This gives the consumer the opportunity to earn and benefit from the sharing of their data. The more a user shares their data, the more tokens they receive. This assures user privacy without needing to use an ad blocking service that will ultimately stifle the creative content of a publisher, all while the user can still enjoy a personalised digital experience. Liberty AIM acknowledges that consumer data is a helpful element for an enriching digital experience, the problem lies with how the data is obtained. That’s why the Liberty browser offers an ‘opt-in’ service that allows the consumer to share their data with companies, creating a truly well-targeted advertising experience. Visit the [Liberty AIM website](https://libertyaim.io/) to learn how you can regain control over your data. Join the conversation on [Telegram](https://t.me/aimico). "body": "*Just how invisible are you on the internet?*\n\nHow many times have you searched aimlessly for a product to then have it pop-up in every website you visit? Numerously, by the way that the internet and digital advertising are working today. Companies are profiting from the actions that consumers take on the internet by tracking their behavior through the use of third-party cookies. This makes the advertising experience irrelevant to the consumer. To combat this, people have started using ‘private browsing’ more and more, but just how ‘invisible’ are you?\n\nThe basis of [private browsing](https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemathews/2017/01/27/what-is-private-browsing-and-why-should-you-use-it/#557904ea25b1) is that it can be used as a ‘safeguard’ while searching the internet. By using this extension, your digital footprint won’t be recorded in the browsers search history. This means that you don’t have to manually delete your search history and in some cases worry about sites gathering information on your browsing habits. However, you are still left vulnerable to external networking monitoring and data hacking if you are using an unreliable Wi-Fi connection.\n\n![95cdfeef.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSh1fd34gYB8iXz1XbmN37VEBzGqJ4tEH4kdhBWSJVFWP/95cdfeef.jpg)\n\n*Cookies have their benefits*\n\nAlthough there are browsers that offer ad blocking capabilities for a faster and ‘safer’ internet experience, they are forgetting that not all shared information is malicious. A third of the content was missing from their articles, in an ingenious way, this was connected to what they earned from ad revenue.\n\nLiberty AIM recognizes that the main problem is not ads and how big companies are sourcing our data, but that they are doing so without our complete approval. That is what our Liberty browser intends to do.\n\n*The best of both worlds*\n\nWith the use of the Liberty browser the power of information sharing goes back to the consumer, enabling them to control with who and when to share their data. This not only provides the consumer active participation but it also returns control over their personal data. The user has the ability to anonymously share their information and in return they are rewarded with tokens. This gives the consumer the opportunity to earn and benefit from the sharing of their data. The more a user shares their data, the more tokens they receive. This assures user privacy without needing to use an ad blocking service that will ultimately stifle the creative content of a publisher, all while the user can still enjoy a personalised digital experience.\n\nLiberty AIM acknowledges that consumer data is a helpful element for an enriching digital experience, the problem lies with how the data is obtained. That’s why the Liberty browser offers an ‘opt-in’ service that allows the consumer to share their data with companies, creating a truly well-targeted advertising experience.\n\nVisit the [Liberty AIM website](https://libertyaim.io/) to learn how you can regain control over your data.\nJoin the conversation on [Telegram](https://t.me/aimico).\nFor more updates, follow us on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/libertyaimico)!",
