| title | My Dip in the Ganges |
| body | I twisted through Varanasi’s suffocating maze, side-stepping skinny cows and men on motorcycles, their mouths blood-red from the local chew. Silhouettes in shop windows. Music blasting from phones. The bells of the temple clanging. A woman wrapped in pink silk, walked under the aura of a street lamp. A man covered in ash, blew smoke from his nostrils. A monkey chewed on a cable above. Six men bombed through carrying a corpse on a bamboo ladder, the corpse wrapped in a sheet and covered in flowers. More people were following, banging drums and chanting. I followed the train of people down a tight passageway, spilling out onto the concrete steps leading to the river’s edge. Groups of women lit candles upon lotus leaves, setting them adrift on the river’s glassy, oily surface. People were everywhere, but my eyes fell on the columns of smoke rising from stacks of wood. Corpses were burning in the center. A charred corpse, lifted in pieces, placed half-cremated into the river. The corpses were scented with spices but there was a smell lurking. Further down the embankment, my friend Christian sat on a low wall with his camera ready. He had secured a boatman to take him out once I got into the river. He gave me a nod, before climbing into the wooden skiff. I was in a state of terror. But I had no choice. It was the end of our movie. I took comfort in the locals bathing in the water, dumping cupfuls of river over themselves, gesturing with emotion. In my underwear now, I walked down the steps and into the river. Floating on my back, wavelets tapping my temples, pooling in my ears, under a pink dome of sky, the reflection of the ancient city shimmering on the water all around me. It’s here that language leaves you. A poignant happiness? A blissful melancholy? A sense that there is something going on outside our perception, and that a lot of it is benevolent? It was this that I kept in mind back home, staying at my sister’s house. I dropped down to 125 lbs. I was wasting away with giardia; my stool a drip the color of the river. |

| title | Skeleton Key |
| body | Towards the end of elementary, an older boy gave me the master key to the school. Weeks later, he would take the key back, but, for a little bit, just before summer began, I had the master key to Queen Elizabeth Elementary. I did nothing with it initially. Too scared, and, I had enough fear going on with the upcoming transition to high school. I was half-hoping the key wouldn’t work. But I rode my skateboard to school one night after dinner and I tried the key on a side door. To my terror, the door actually opened. I took a deep breath before propping my skate against a wall and going inside. I put the key into the door of a classroom. It opened and I stood inside the dim, colorful room. A grid of twilight beaming in through the caged windows. A loud bang whipped my head around, and I booked it out of there. But it was just my skateboard. It had fallen over. I wanted to go home, back to mom, back to the Nintendo. But I tried more rooms, the key, it was working on every door. The computer room, where I looked for the Sim City disk. The library, where I ran my hand across the Waldo books. My Teacher is an Alien. The sex-ed book that got the point across while struggling tonally. The art room, and those watercolor “cakes,” like colorful hockey pucks, the gym. the equipment room. California kickball bases. European handballs. The smell of sweat and rubber. I grabbed a b-ball, fired a shot, but the booming echo when my airball hit the hardwood — i was lit with fear. I ran to the door and peered down the hallway, waiting for an adult. But nothing. no one was around. So I spent another hour in there, exploring the forbidden rooms. The vice principal’s office. The nurse’s office. The teacher’s lounge (which didn’t feel like a lounge after all). Not touching anything, just floating around, getting stronger with each room I crossed off. God, This monolithic building. I’d spent seven years in it. and, here it was, at the very end, confessing its secrets. we would part in good faith. I skated home in the dark. Wiser. Dad had broken himself by then, irreparably it would turn out, and I was going to have to face my fears without him, to take an active role in these kinds of transitions. But maybe there’d be some advantages in having to do that. |

| body | Mom’s dad Wells came by one night. I watched him through the kitchen window, parking his car. Always a new sedan of some kind, never German. “Too ostentatious,” he’d say. “Pop,” as the grandkids called him, was well into his 70s at this point. He was dressed in a crisp suit and had just come from the club in Shaughnessy. It was after nine o’clock at night. He would often come by unannounced, which seemed at odds with his sense of decorum. What to say about that sense of decorum? “I’m doing well, Pop. Thank you for asking.” Always the “thank you for asking.” And never would you say the dreaded “what.” Or you leave a table without asking to be excused. Statements such as, “Have a nice day, Pop,” or, “Take care, Pop,” were frowned upon. Pop felt they were commands. Much better to depart with a statement of feeling: “It was lovely to see you, Pop,” or, “I always have so much fun here, Pop.” And we always did. Just as we always ate our soup inside-out, as outside-in had “too much of the shoveling about it.” But that night he stopped by, in his suit, he was without that decorum. He was grinning and joking, standing in the hallway running me through Johnny Carson bits. Most of it going over my head — I hadn’t seen any Carson — but I so desperately wanted him to keep going. I loved this new, carefree side of him — he was like my buddy now — so I pretended like I knew the names he was bringing up and I laughed along with him despite not understanding anything. I wish I could remember more of what we talked about. In retrospect, it seems as if he was trying to connect with me in a new way. Like he knew I liked movies and was trying to meet me half way. I watched him leave through the window. Moving through the street lamp’s cone of misty light. A tall man with a slow grace and a new car. I wanted to be like that. Later that night Mom told me about his diagnosis. |

| title | Three Wineries |
| body | The first winery: I should’ve known I’d meet you. The limitless vineyard. The turtle-shaped cloud. Everything had a strange significance or the cabernet was playing tricks. You came in bubbly, balletic, hair flowing from beneath your hat, a shade of blond I’d never seen. I stayed close to get introduced. I don’t remember what was said, just your friends whisking you away and how everything would now be different. The second winery was is an old mansion. I watched you through doorways, gliding behind balusters. I saw your reflection in a window through a break in the curtains. You seemed to remain in a room after you’d left. I caught your eye, but bungled the smile. Was I smirking? You looked away. That guy, just now, wasn't me. I grasped for the Zin, the peppery notes confusing me further. The third winery: the Pinot was standoffish, and I imagined so were you. I sat down in a chair, aloof and alone and swept out to sea. Then came the chardonnay — a buttery, pineapple, second chance. You were out on the lawn. I could bring you a glass. I made my move. We passed the squirrelly ball of conversation. If I could just get you laughing, everything would start. |

| body | Grade six. I had a girlfriend. But it was following the same tragic pattern; an initial flirtation followed by a brokering of the relationship between her friend and I, after which I’d become paralyzed with shyness, unable to even say “hello” to my new girlfriend. She’d eventually get bored and that same friend would then return to deliver the bad news. And my current relationship had hit the boredom phase, judging by my girlfriend’s decision to switch desks to the opposite side of the room from where mine was. So when the teacher rolled in the TV set, announcing we’d spend the rest of the day watching a tape of a musical — the kids gathering on the carpet in front of the TV — I took a spot right in front of my girlfriend, hoping proximity would help my cause. Soon, however, my afternoon sugar crash kicked in. I felt my eyes getting heavy in the dim classroom. But I snapped awake when I felt my girlfriend tickling the space above my hip. I froze in shock, which seemed to be a challenge to her, as she then slipped her hand underneath my shirt, touching my bare skin. I was so still. Something told me I needed to be. That if I were to flinch or react, in any way, it would risk cutting short her exploration of me. Which she was boldly in the midst of doing, rolling from knuckles to fingertips, circling my hip to the small of my back, grazing under the elastic of my boxers before tickly-scratching up and down my spine. My response? Muscles tensing, palms sweating, squeezing my eyes shut, optical spots dancing on the darkness of my inner eyelids like lily pads on a pond, TV light through my eyelashes like moonlight through trees. When the bell rang and the lights flicked on, I discovered that it was a boy behind me who’d been doing all that funny business on my back — my girlfriend had switched seats like she’d switched desks. Her friend would soon circle back with the bad news, but none of this mattered. The wick had been lit. |

But it was following the same tragic pattern; an initial flirtation followed by a brokering of the relationship between her friend and I, after which I’d become paralyzed with shyness, unable to even say “hello” to my new girlfriend. She’d eventually get bored and that same friend would then return to deliver the bad news.\n\nAnd my current relationship had hit the boredom phase, judging by my girlfriend’s decision to switch desks to the opposite side of the room from where mine was.\n\nSo when the teacher rolled in the TV set, announcing we’d spend the rest of the day watching a tape of a musical — the kids gathering on the carpet in front of the TV — I took a spot right in front of my girlfriend, hoping proximity would help my cause.\n\nSoon, however, my afternoon sugar crash kicked in. I felt my eyes getting heavy in the dim classroom.\n\nBut I snapped awake when I felt my girlfriend tickling the space above my hip. I froze in shock, which seemed to be a challenge to her, as she then slipped her hand underneath my shirt, touching my bare skin.\n\nI was so still. Something told me I needed to be. That if I were to flinch or react, in any way, it would risk cutting short her exploration of me.\n\nWhich she was boldly in the midst of doing, rolling from knuckles to fingertips, circling my hip to the small of my back, grazing under the elastic of my boxers before tickly-scratching up and down my spine.\n\nMy response? | body | What set me off was that little mango-pyramid. It was lying there on the kitchen floor. A polyhedron of terror. ⠀ The morning had started out great. I got up early, meditated, showered. I put steel cut oats in the instant pot. I was at my desk writing and it was still dark out. ⠀ I had our window open to the street. There were these birds that sounded like typewriters. One launched into the air and landed on the top of a tree, lifting its wings up and down like a conductor. ⠀ I posted my story, refilled my coffee and took it outside, sitting on the steps in front of our building. The sun was now rising, and I waited to feel that sense of well-being one gets after sharing one’s work. ⠀ But those good vibes never came. ⠀ Instead I became preoccupied with the sidewalk. They’d filled in the ruptured sidewalk with tar, and it was done in such a way that it looked like a black knife was embedded in the cement. ⠀ When I bent down to inspect the black knife of tar, I caught a glimpse of my eye-wrinkles reflected in the lenses of my sunglasses. A ginger man then jogged by with five-finger shoes. I thought I better go inside and eat breakfast. ⠀ But first I double-checked my post, and I was glad I did; it was a disaster. I’d gone over the allotted character limit so my ending was cut off. My line breaks weren’t acknowledged because I forgot to copy and paste the invisible symbol. I quickly deleted the post, shortened it, and then reposted it using the invisible symbol. ⠀ And we’ve arrived at the aforementioned mango-pyramid. ⠀ I had gone into the kitchen to slice mango for the oats, and the pyramidal piece fell onto the tiled floor. For the life of me, I couldn’t pick it up. It kept sliding through my fingers. Its shadow elongated by the sun cutting in sideways. ⠀ I looked at my hand. It seemed limited. I thought of the claw crane in that rigged arcade game, the mango-pyramid like the toy falling through its weak grasp. ⠀ But I caught a break. The shot glass of toothpicks on the counter. I snatched one and stabbed the mango, sliding it slowly into the orange flesh. |

| body | He hit the gas coming out of the s-curve winding around the canyon, his diesel engine rattling, the sky an overcast of glare and gray trees throwing jagged shadows on the narrow road. ⠀ He would do these drives now. Early afternoon, less traffic. Often quite stoned. Why not? He was getting that script he wrote—that one about Monty Clift and his car accident—made. By HBO no less. He was on cloud nine. ⠀ ⠀ The most wonderful thing that could have happened to him, happened. The Universe, like this road, had unraveled before him like he was its guest of honor, swinging his car along the ridge and underneath into the cool tunnel. ⠀ His phone was buzzing in the glove box but he didn’t hear it. It was his manager. Bad news. A reshuffling of executives with a de-emphasis on biopics. But Lovick just drove on, blissfully unaware, as the tunnel’s aperture opened and he flew back out into the glare. ⠀ Then, a hallucination of sound — a face-wash of glass and metal and terror but it lasted only a second before everything returned to normal. “One toke over the line,” he thought. But, when he checked his rearview, he saw his car crunched against a telephone pole. The terrible tableau scrolled down his back windshield, as his car ascended the road. ⠀ He shook it off, pushing skyward, nothing would kill his buzz. The sun had broken apart the overcast and rays of light filtered through the trees that flanked the road. Trees outlined in orange, their branches clutching above like an archway. He drove past a lake with toy sailboats reflected in the water like butterflies. ⠀ He found himself pulling up to a flat-roofed house tucked into a hill. He walked around the forested yard, where the house opened up, revealing Monty Clift inside, sitting in a chair reading. He watched Monty—his old muse—with a look not unmingled with desperation. ⠀ A jolt of pain shot up Lovick’s spine knocking his vision out-of-focus. The sparkle of Monty’s eyes became swirling ovals multiplying before snapping back into focus as ambulance lights, which Lovick saw in a shard of mirror as he lay pinned under the steering column. |

| body | I drank honey vodka from a coffee cup and waited for you to emerge. It had been a long day. So literal. So many talking-heads. At one point I’d muttered to myself, “You’re an asshole, Lovick, that’s your problem.” But here you were like my savior and we began our night walk. We plunged down the purplish streets flowing oceanward. We passed the goofy-looking palm tree with the Sideshow Bob hairdo and the cactus garden with its box of free cactus clippings, the street lights pinging off a row of electric scooters. I caught our reflection in a passing car and then again in a convex mirror on a pole near a driveway. The distant stop sign was a backlit hexagon and powerlines with hot edges drooped between buildings. Dark figures clinked wine glasses on a balcony. I saw a shadow glide across your skin. We watched a winged creature fly into a street lamp and electrocute itself in a fiery cloudburst before finding ourselves underneath eucalyptus trees with their scent of mint and tarragon. We crossed the PCH and onto the great beach that feathered off into darkness in both directions. My body seemed to extend, the ocean air pulling me upward and the sand cushioning my footsteps. A line of seagulls swooped skyward before doubling over itself in the halation of the moon dappling silver upon the blue waves. I wanted to tell you something. Something about how endearing I find your voice. The timbre of it, vulnerable somehow, but fearless, like staccato brushstrokes upon the canvas my life. Or just tell you something simple about your eyes. But I couldn’t get any of this out. Something insane had appeared in the sky. It was a jellyfish of light with an epic tail and a blazing eye. We thought for sure it was an alien. A woman appeared next to us who was crying at the sight, followed by more people with mouths agape. I was surprised by my negative reaction: great, now there are literally aliens. But a guy showed up and said it was a rocket. “Elon-fucking-Musk is punking us all. You read his tweet? ‘Nuclear Alien UFO from Korea.’ ” I was grateful for Musk’s sense of humor. |

| body | I didn’t think I could get any lonelier after that summer, but when high school started this kid John had it out for me pretty much immediately. He was small but had big friends. He came at me in PE punching my arms. But I didn’t fight back. His punches didn’t hurt and I never knew what to do in those situations. Once I saw John on the ferry. He was sitting at a table in the cafeteria folding the back page of a Mad magazine in thirds. Someone asked if they could take the chair opposite him, revealing John’s tiny legs. He saw me, and looked scared without his friends. He seemed much younger than 13 with his mad mag, like the real John was much smaller and peeking out at me from behind his pupils. I looked for John once I paid for my snack just to talk but he was gone. We could of split a ciggie on the deck and tossed it in the ocean, so foggy and frothy out there it all looked covered in ash anyway. That week back at school I was walking home and John and his friends appeared from an alley. John shouted that I’d taken his hat on the ferry, which was a lie. They ran after me and my heart beat so fast I couldn’t run as quick as I normally could. They chased me into an overgrown yard and kicked me on the ground taking turns. I heard myself sobbing underneath their blows. I tried to restrain the largest boy, clutching his forearms, but then John hit me in the back with his skateboard and they booked it out of there. I was winded so bad I never thought I would breathe again, laying there in the tall grass, the dying sun just a red stripe and me shivering now too after everything. I took a few days off from school. When I returned I saw John in PE. He looked relieved to see me alive, then his face seemed to recede into that younger version of himself. Like he wanted to talk to me but didn’t have the words and was scared. I know this because I’m John. I’m the turd. I’m the liar. I told the story from the other kid’s perspective in order to rid myself of the damn thing. The sound of my skateboard hitting his spine. I still hear it, and it’s not unlike a gunshot. |
